Prevent Excel From Adjusting Formulas When Inserting New Columns Of Raw Data

Nov 12, 2013

I have a sheet with 2 tabs. On the first tab is my data and the 2nd tab is the formula.

This is my formula;

=IF(ISERROR(VLOOKUP(A3,Data!$A:$AD,23,0)),"",(VLOOKUP(A3,Data!$A:$AD,23,0)))

When I insert a new column at 'A' the formula changes (as below)

=IF(ISERROR(VLOOKUP(A3,Data!$B:$AE,23,0)),"",(VLOOKUP(A3,Data!$B:$AE,23,0)))

How do i stop the reference changing from 'Data!$A:$AD' to 'Data!$B:$AE' when inserting the column?

Inserting Columns Without Changing Formulas?

Feb 7, 2014

I have a very simple inventory spreadsheet that I used to keep track of certain products. The issue is that I often have to insert new columns and when I do, the formulas get convoluted. Is there a trick to making them follow the structure of the formula before?

My formula is =SUM(GT4:GU4) and appears in the Running Total column. When I insert two columns - a white column where an order will be inserted, as well as a running total column. When I perform the insert, the formula for the inserted columns, as well as the set of columns immediately to the right require corrections:

Inserted columns: =SUM(GT4:GW4) [Should be GV4:GW4]
Columns to the right: =SUM(GV4:GY4) [Should be GX4:GY4]

I know how to manipulate the formulas correctly, I would like to keep a clean file for my predecessor.

Complex Formulas Not Automatically Adjusting When Adding / Removing Rows?

Jul 11, 2014

I have this spreadsheet that I am creating schedules for my employees since our scheduling software at work is horrible to work with. It calculates total hours for each employee at the far right of the rows, and calculates total hours for each day in the columns. The formulas that calculate the hours for each day is set up to automatically deduct 30 minutes from a shift, for lunch, if they're scheduled for more than 5 hours (the gray shaded employee rows are for managers and that only deducts 30 mins if they're shift exceeds 8 hours).

I'm familiar enough to put somewhat complex formulas together, but I don't understand it enough to always make them work correctly. What I'm wanting to be able to do is add or subtract entire rows (add new employees or remove old), and have my formulas for calculating the total hours to still work. Right now if I delete a row the cell with the formula in it says #REF!. I can fix this by going through the formula and manually deleting everything in that contains those other cells, but the formula is huge, and it's pretty tedious going through the whole thing when it feels like there should be a simpler way of doing it.

TLDR: I want to be able to add/remove a row and have my cells currently on row 36 update the formula correctly.

Prevent Custom Function Running When Inserting/Adding Rows

Apr 8, 2008

I have a piece of code that hides unneeded rows, it does work but it is very slow.
This is in the worksheet part of the project. My problem is as it runs it "jumps" in to a function I have in a module that counts continuous rows. I would like to know why it is doing this and what I need to do to stop it? I have another piece of code that is structered exactly the same that hides unneeded columns and I do not have any problems with that. I know both pieces of code are dealing with rows and I think this is part of the problem but I can not see any reason why the first bit would call the second bit?

Dim C
With Worksheets("CEN OAS"). Range("D5:D378")
.EntireRow.Hidden = False
End With
For Each C In Worksheets("CEN OAS").Range("D5:D378")
If C.Value = "" Then
C.EntireRow.Hidden = True
End If
Next C

Inserting Columns With Numbers Relative To Previous Data

Jan 19, 2012

the following issue:

I have a spreadsheet of questionnaire responses which range from 1-7

For example:

Respondent Q1

1 4
2 3
3 7
4 6

So each row is a new respondent and each column is their response from the scale.

What I need to do is code the responses into a different form. I need them to be represented as follows:

Respondent Answer1 Answer2 Answer3 Answer4 Answer 5 Answer 6 Answer 7

1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0
2 0 0 1 0 0 0 0

So that each number then represents the place on the scale from which it was chosen.

I tried recording a macro but I think this requires something a lot more complex.

Prevent Duplicate Data Entry Via Userform Based On Exact Match In 2 Columns

Jul 16, 2012

I have a userform with several textboxes and 2 comboboxes. The data that I need protected from duplication is based in the comboboxes. If I ignore the other fields and presume the following it may be easier to understand:

The comboboxes are populated by the data stored in sheet1 and when the userform is complete, the OK button populates all the data into sheet2

Combobox1 contains names eg, John, Julie, Bob etc
Combobox2 contains colours eg, Red, Blue, Green etc

I want the userform to allow the data to be entered into sheet2 only if it is not an exact duplicate of the choices in BOTH of the comboboxes

For Example
John Red
Julie Red
Bob Blue
John Blue

These are all ok, however, to try and enter John Red again would bring up a message box indicating a duplicate entry and prevent the data from being entered.

When I have tried setting the equation to pull from the drop down list in cel A1 for example:

Inserting Rows While Copying Formulas

Jun 18, 2008

I have a spread sheet that I have locked with the expection of certain cells. I also have left the ability to insert and delete rows. The cells that are locked have functions in them run in sequance.

Is there a way that when the new row is inserted its copies the formula from the row above automatically but also adjust for the new row and adjusts the rows below it automatically?

For example if I insert a new row between rows 2 and 3 below.
(orginal layout)
a1 (unlocked) b1 (locked)(function is =sum(a1:b1)
a2 (unlocked) b2 (locked)(function is =sum(a2:b2)
a3 (unlocked) b3 (locked)(function is =sum(a3:b3)
a4 (unlocked) b4 (locked)(function is =sum(a4:b4)

(layout after inserting row)
a1 (unlocked) b1 (locked)(function is =sum(a1:b1)
a2 (unlocked) b2 (locked)(function is =sum(a2:b2)
a3 (unlocked) b3 (unlocked) *inserted row*
a4 (unlocked) b4 (locked)(function is =sum(a4:b4)
a5 (unlocked) b5 (locked)(function is =sum(a5:b5)

this is what i want the end product to be.
(layout if formulas are copied and adjusted after inserting row)
a1 (unlocked) b1 (locked)(function is =sum(a1:b1)
a2 (unlocked) b2 (locked)(function is =sum(a2:b2)
a3 (unlocked) b3 (locked)(function is =sum(a3:b3) *inserted row*
a4 (unlocked) b4 (locked)(function is =sum(a4:b4)

Inserting Named Ranges Into Formulas

I am wanting to build a macro to calculate the average of a range of cells. For y = 0 To 171

.Range("a16").Offset(12 * y, 12 * x)
Workbooks("Mega Spectrums.xls").Sheets("NP - FT01").Range("a5").Offset(y, x).Select

Macro For Copying Formulas + Inserting Rows

Apr 25, 2009

I was tired of making my list smaller to upload it here, so I uploaded the complete thing on megaupload :P Here is the link:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1W6PBADE

On the bottom of the list is a button; "Add New Anime". When you click on that you get a UserForm where you can enter; Title, Type, Total Episodes, D/L Eps and Watched Episodes. When you press ''Add Anime" the entered values are entered at the bottom of the list, underneath the corresponding list names on the top.

Now there are 4 list names left (Left, Status, Status 2, and Progress (%)) I still have to make a option to enter Status 2 as well in the UserForm.

Now the question:

In columns F (Left), H (Status) and I (Progress (%)) are formulas. How can I copy those formulas automatically when I add something new with the UserForm? And can it automatically insert a new row, since I have to move the buttons down with every new title.

Formulas To Pull Data In Various Columns Within Row 2 Of Another Worksheet

Nov 10, 2011

I need some VBA code that puts in formulas to pull data in various columns within row 2 of another worksheet.

The formulas need to be entered below some other data, which is populated from another prior macro.

The below code works well but as the prior macro can populate a different number of rows on different days, the Row count then also changes and doesn't always refer to row 2 of 'HLDRT before' tab.

ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = _
"=IF('HLDRT before'!R[-22]C[-18] = ""A17"",RIGHT('HLDRT before'!R-20C[14],3)&'HLDRT before'!R-20C[9]&'HLDRT before'!R-20]C[-13],"""")"

Is there a way I can tell the above code to always use row 2 from the 'HLDRT before' sheet, while keeping the column number lookups the same?

I think there is a way to do it by removing the [] signs but I can't get it to work. I also then need the macro to copy these down so I'm not sure if using $ will cause problems?

Autofill Data Validation Lists And Formulas Into New Columns In Tables?

Jan 9, 2014

The Table is expanded only into columns. Which means, there will be no new rows...only columns will be added.

If we enter text into the header cell in a new column, the whole new column gets formatted, but the list and formulas do not auto fill into new columns.

Of course an easy way is to copy and paste a column...but is there a way to auto fill lists and formulas into columns of the table? Similar to how the rows get autofilled?

Adjusting Charts To Reflect Data Properly

Feb 2, 2009

I've compiled data into a spreadsheet which indicates the number of homes sold over the course of 3 years (from 1/1/05 to now) along with their price per square foot, sale price, year built, bed/bath count, and other pertinent factors regarding each property.

I've extrapolated graphs from these in the past which indicated the trends in each category over time (i.e.: Average quarterly price per square foot over time, and so forth).

The data range I'm working with now, however, is from an area of my region so small, that the number of units sold over the past few years is sporadic. Whereas it's normally 100 to 1000 units that comprise my data, now it's only 15 units.

This has created gaps in my line graphs where the price per square foot will dramatically drop down to zero over the periods in time where no sale was recorded. So the line graph ends up looking like a zig-zaggy range of peaks reflecting the price per square foot of a sale, and valleys representing "$0.00" for periods of time where nothing has sold.

To have a Price per square foot of $0.00 is incorrect since in reality nothing was sold.

I would like to be able to eliminate the portions of the graph that have the "$0.00" so that the line graph can "jump" from one sale to the next when the quarterly data indicates 0 units sold.

I'd like to do this without having to eliminate those areas in my spreadsheets. Is there any "catch-all" tool that might do this or is that just crazy talk?
