Conditional Format Using ISBLANK Function - Not Disappearing When Cell Has Data

Jun 19, 2013

I am making some conditional formats for a document. One that I am trying to achieve is have a group of cells have a background color, but once the data has been added, the color go away.

This is what my conditional format looks like: =ISBLANK($A$1:$H$22) and chose the Green fill background. So, my understanding is, the cells should have a green background if they are blank, but go back to a standard format, once cells have data put in them.

Check Cell For Data. Tried ISREF, ISBLANK, ISNUMBER, ISTEXT.

Mar 24, 2009

I have 4 cols, x rows. I need Column C to check Column B for a numerical value, and if true, return the value in B, and if not true, then return value from A. Column B are functions formatted as general. The reference made by Sheet2!B is numbers formatted as text as to retain leading zeros. Here is what I have so far
=IF(ISBLANK($B10),$A10,$B10)

Isblank Function Erroneous Results

Sep 1, 2009

Using data of unknown origin in Excel I found Isblank was giving a FALSE result on some apparently blank cells while giving a TRUE result on others.

Even if I used TRIM and CLEAN functions on the offending data and pasted the resulting values back the the original locations, the Isblank result was still FALSE. Also, the font colour was not set to white or transparent.

However, if I selected the cell with the 'invisible' data, clicked in the Formula Bar and pressed Enter without entering any new data, the problem disappeared for that cell. The problem also disappeared if I selected the problem 'blank' cell and pressed delete.

Can anyone explain this 'invisible data' and tell me how I can detect it using a function or formula?

ISBLANK Function For Multiple Cells?

Nov 3, 2009

I am currently using the function:

=IF(OR(ISBLANK(C8), ISBLANK (D8), ISBLANK (E8), ISBLANK (F8), ISBLANK (G8), ISBLANK (H8), ISBLANK (I8), ISBLANK (J8), ISBLANK (K8), ISBLANK (L8), ISBLANK (M8), ISBLANK (N8), ISBLANK (O8), ISBLANK (P8), ISBLANK (Q8), ISBLANK (R8)), "", IF(SUM(C8:R8)=0,"Yes", "No"))

and it is returning a #value error sign.

I want it to check if C8:R8 is blank, and if so, put nothing. But if not, use the formula: IF(SUM(C8:R8)=0,"Yes", "No"))

Conditional Format With OR Function

Apr 12, 2013

I want to apply conditional formatting in a cell based on the contents of another cell. I can do it if I just want it based off 1 condition (=b151="sample") but would like to if it met 1 of a couple possibilities.

For example, cell H151 I would like to fill green if cell B151 contained the text "sample" or "example". B151 has a list box with about 10 possibilities but I only want a few of those to turn H151 green.

Macro Fill Down Function Is Changing Format In Conditional Formatting

Dec 18, 2013

When I hit the macro code you see below I get both columns D and E, starting from row 18, to get 'filled down' to the specified spot. Every second row has a conditional format (when a value is entered in column A) to change the row to the color grey, and every row between it has a conditional format (when any value is entered in column A as well) to have the row changed to the color red. The issue here is that the Macro code messes up the conditional formatting and uses the conditional formatting of those two cells, which are being dragged down, for those entire filled-down columns! This is what I am starting off with test1.xlsm and this is what I end up with using the macro code below (or doing it manually)

test2.xlsm

Is there a way for the Macro code to bypass this issue?

Disappearing Data Validation Lists

Sep 22, 2008

I have a very large spreadsheet that I work with on a daily basis. The main portion of the spreadsheet is broken down into weekly sections (for example, columns GF thru GM contain data sections for one week, which then repeats with the next set of columns, etc.). Below these weekly sections are detail and summary sections for all the data entered above. In the main weekly portion, each week contains a size drop-down list which calls to size information in the detail portion below. Recently, the data validation lists have started disappearing. By disappearing, I mean that the data validation for the cell no longer exists on a large portion of the list cells. I have tried recreating all of the data validations, saving the file, and re-opening it, and when I do, they've disappeared again. I have no idea what to do at this point. The functionality of the spreadsheet is crippled without the sizing drop-down lists (for various lookup reasons).

Conditional Format Comparing Data Between Rows

Nov 11, 2009

(Core starting issue solved but other threads were created to continue with trouble spots.)

I'm terrified to use VBA just yet, so right now I'm determined to highlight values in my spreadsheet just using conditional formatting.

I have 5 plus 1 columns of data. For example,

A B C D E....F
3 2 4 5 7....2
4 6 1 3 4....1
4 7 4 5 8....4
2 1 5 3 9....1

I successfully applied a MIN formula to compare between columns on each
row and display in F the MIN value. Notice each cell going down F has the
minimum value in analyzing across each row.

Now, I *also* want to apply a formula on the whole F column to compare these resultant MIN values
and give me the MINIMUM value between those as well, so now I'm comparing across
rows. Got it? Now then.....I want the ENTIRE row that has this MIN value in F to be highlighted, because that will be the best choice for the application of what I'm doing. Did you understand this paragraph. It might have been confusing, but I think I said everything correctly, so read it carefully.

I've tried all sorts of "Formula is", "Cell value is", dollar sign this, dollar sign that, no dollar sign this, <, >, =, highlighted ALL the block of data, highlighting JUST the column across the rows of which will be compared, only highlighted one cell, but nothing has worked.

Is my problem that you can't have 2 formulas in one cell? So then I thought I should ADD another condition, but nothing works.

Let me throw in one more element that I did not state. If anywhere down the F column there is a 0, I don't want that to be my minimum. I want it to evaluate and give me the minimum value greater than 0.

Please read everything I wrote carefully. It might be confusing, but I hope someone has an answer, because it sure has frustrated me.

Now, I'm thinking that VBA programming may give me answers, but I am so terrified of macros, I don't know how to begin that. I have this impression based on the many sites I've looked at on the internet that many people do macros and it's quite easy, but it's funny to me that I am so scared. There's something about me freaking out that I won't have a period or a quote in the right place and I'll stress my day away over it.

Conditional Format Chart Data Series Points

May 16, 2008

Background: I have a Chart sheet with a combination bar/line chart on it. Data is coming from a "datasheet". There is a combo box on the chart sheet that allows you to choose a specific office whose data you want to view. Pick an office from the dropdown and the chart changes. The data is a count of closed cases by month. The data sheet shows 22 Offices with their monthly data, along with entries for each month of the Upper Control Point, Lower Control Point and Mean based on the nationwide data for that month.

The chart itself uses bars to show the office's case count per month, and I've incorporated 3 additional data series to plot the UCP, LCP and Mean as lines for each month.

I'd like to change the color of the bars to be Blue, Green or Red depending on where they fall in the 3 lines. I sort of have it working, but I'm stuck.

The code below grabs the value of each series point and compares it to the 3 control points and does change the colors. I've figured out how to use the If, next to change from one series point to the next, but cannot figure out how to loop through each of the control points. As it stands now, it looks only at the first month's control point and uses that for each successive month.

I hope this is clear and I've tried to keep it as short as possible while still providing enough information.

Conditional Format Based On Cell Value - VBA

Jan 17, 2014

With the click of a toolbar button, I've got my vba inserting a new tab, renaming it, inserting headers and now working on the code to insert all the formulas needed in 12 columns to copy down as far as there is data.

The 4th column D is the hardest. Currently, I'm using manual "Conditional Formatting" to colorize the cells in Col D but need the VBA to place that "Conditional Formatting" code into the sheet so that when the sheet is created, it will hold the conditional formatting feature.

Specifically, the formulas I'm using in the Conditional format wizard are:

Formula: =$B2$D2 then turn the cell red Applies to: =$D$2:D

Copy down (in other words, the colorizing should work all the way down Column D as long as there is data in Col D.

Conditional Format Cell Based On Value Of Another

Feb 19, 2007

I'm afraid as its a multiple conditional format and thus needs coding. At the moment I'm using the following

Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
' Conditional Formatting for more than 3 conditions
Dim rng As Range
' Target is a range::therefore,it can be more than one cell
' For example,,someone could delete the contents of a range,
' or someone could enter an array..
Set rng = Intersect(Target, Range("E27:E34,G27:G34,I27:I34,K27:K34,M27:M34,O27:O34,Q27:Q34,S27:S34,U27:U34,W27:W34,Y27:Y34,AA27:AA34"))

If rng Is Nothing Then
Exit Sub
Else.....................

This works very nicely, so that for example if I type the number 10 into cell M33, that cells fill colour becomes black (and the text turns white). Alas I would now also like to extend the fill and text colour to the cell one to the left too. To take this example I would type 10 into cell M33 and cells L33 and M33 would both be filled black and their text would be white. I'm not sure if this requires a change to the code, or if its possible to just have a formula or something which copies the fomatting of one cell into another

Substitue Function And Data Format

Sep 9, 2006

Var1 is a number, for example (3.2354896), displayed on the worksheet as 3.2
Var2 is a number, for example (3.958846), displayed on the worksheet as 4.0
Var3 is text, for example (lunch program)
BullPoint = "greater satisfaction with Var3 (Var2 vs. Var1)"
Range ("A1") = Application.Substitute(WorksheetFunction.Substitute(WorksheetFunction.Substitute(BullPoint, "Var1", Var1), "Var2", Var2), "Var3", Var3)

The result of this is now:
greater satisfaction with lunch program (3.958846 vs. 3.2354896)

What we want to see is:
greater satisfaction with lunch program (4.0 vs. 3.2)
without losing the ".0" for the 4.0, which happens if we adjust the original data, using ActiveWorkbook.PrecisionAsDisplayed. Our preference is not to use this command, as it changes source data.

Conditional Format Cells In Jan - Dec Columns Based On Next Column Data?

Wondering if it is possible to conditional format cells in "Jan"-"Dec" columns based on "Next" column data?

What I need is (lets say fill colour to differ) in one cell per row, based on latest input and "next" data.

Month Avg
Date
Jan
Feb
Mar
Apr
May
Jun
Jul

[code]......

So for example:

row2: May is latest input so need fill in cell +2("next" column data) from may. In this case July

row3: Feb is latest imput and "next" also 2. Result should be Apr

row8:May is latest input, "next" is 6. Res should be Nov.

Finally, only one cell per row to be highlighted so need to overwrite colour fill when new data input in a cell already colour filled.
