Determine If Named Range Is Empty / Null
Dec 1, 2008This will probably turn out to be a really quick one: I've got some named ranges I'm working with that in of themselves use Offset to automatically expand a list.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to define some variables as byte, but I want 0 to be a valid value rather than null. When there is no data, that is when I would like for the variable to be null.
Is there a way to accomplish this? In addition, I use the same variables in a loop, which are reset at the beginning of the loop. Is there a way to reset a variable without giving it a value (like 0)?
I wrote some code that toggles bewtweeen the word "Yes" and the function clearcontents.
What it does not do, is if you click on cell A1 and change it's contents and you click on the same cell again it does nothing. You need to click on another cell say A2 before you can go and change A1 again.
My code is as follows:
Private Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal Target As Range)
If Target.Cells.Count > 1 Then Exit Sub
If Not Intersect(Target, Range("Documents")) Is Nothing Then
On Error Resume Next
Application.EnableEvents = False
If IsEmpty(Target) Then
Target.Value = "Yes"
Else
Target.ClearContents
End If
Application.EnableEvents = True
On Error Goto 0
End If
End Sub
I'm working with some data exported from a database. Unfortunately, when data is exported to excel, cells that should be completely blank (i.e. ISBLANK formula would return TRUE) actually contain empty strings.
What is the fastest way to replace the empty string with a true null?
How exactly does Excell treats uninitialized variables ? I have created a function which takes in one of the cell values as a parameter.. However, it seems that when I don't reference an empty cell, the code does not work. Let the function be ABC, and the let the cell be A1
When I use
=ABC(....,A1,....) , it works
However, when I use
=ABC(....,,....) I am getting an eror
Now , I tried using the IsEmpty function , and it seems tht when i use ,, or ,"", then the variable is not caught.. however, the variable is caught when i use an empty cell such as ,A1,
FYI, I am using the vba's formula method to assign this function to a cell. So when I use
"," & ActiveCell.Offset(to reach A1).Value & "," , I see blank ,, when A1 is empty
I am building a template ("Table") that will import data from 4 other spreadsheets and then format the data once its all in the template. I need to delete all rows where a name didn't import. The names are landing in column B (starting with B22), so I set up my code using an active cell loop macro to examine each cell to see if it was empty, and then to delete the row if it were. I've tried 4-5 iterations of code but nothing is working correctly.
Apparently when the fields are copied over from the other spreadsheets, some empty cells actually have something in them such that they are not completely blank. What syntax I can use so that I capture every instance of a blank/empty cell and delete that corresponding row? Some of the code I've tried is below.

Right now I am writing a macro with a defult action if an arry is empty. Unfortunatly the way I wanted to do it will not work becuse it can't recognize the difference between one entry in the array and no entries:
If LBound(array) = UBound(array) Then
if the active cell is formatted as number and I write
x = Cells(Row, Column).Value
and the cell is empty or blank, x will be set to 0.
How can I determine that the cell is blank and not actually 0 ?
I have an excel document with hundreds of columns. Each column should not be empty; they must have at least one value. Right now I'm applying a filter and going through each column one by one to make sure that it is not empty. How can I perform this check without having to go through each column one by one?
View 6 Replies View RelatedLet's say you have a named range, Rng1, which consists of cells A1 & A2. In vba how would you report back what, if any, named range the following cells resides:

here are multiple named ranges so using intersect is not feasible. Essentially, through code, I will be given a range and I need to determine if that range if part of a named range.
In the following range:
Code:
.Range("C13", .Range("C13").End(xlDown))
For column G, I want to put "N/A" into blank cells.
Like this:
Column CColumn GFIC0021FIC0012FIC0063FIC003N/AFIC0341
I need a formula that will return "true" only if ALL cells in the specified range are not Null (<>""). I'd like to assign a value (% complete) only after all tasks under a phase have been given a completion date.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make my named ranges remember the values of the last active cells used within another named range. The purpose of this is to make my charts dynamically change dependant on two criteria selected. My spreadsheet currently updates itself as and when I change the active cell within a single named range, dynamically changing the chart data by using Lookup based on the active cells value. However I want to get away from having several charts showing, I would like to have a single chart which dynamically changes based on a second selection. So the first selection is for a department (Facility) which changes the chart data relevant to that department, the second selection is to dynamically change the chart shown for the pre selected department.

Using the following code when updating just one criteria with several charts
VB:
Private Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal Target As Range)
If Not Application.Intersect(ActiveCell, [MeasureType]) Is Nothing Then
[valMeasurePicked] = ActiveCell.Value [code].....
which works fine but I'm not sure how to add a second selection criteria because my code uses Activecell. I thought that the VBA needed to set the last used value of a range as a variable and therefore allow the second criteria to be selected but am not sure how to put it into practice.
The problem that I am having today is defining a range object that cannot include null cells. If it does include Null cells then the filterwill fail. the cells that I need to define are all in a cohesive unit. the other thing to know is that the cells that are not null will never be mixed in with cells that are null. so for instance you might have a range of cells from one to 100, the first 50 might be full. the last 50 would all be null. in that situation I would need to loop through those cells to define a range object that would just see the first 50 cells ....
View 6 Replies View Related1 workbook, 2 worksheets (or tabs). On tab 1, I want a formula/alert that tells the user if any duplicate values exist in Column A of tab 2
Tab 2, Column A, has Unique ID's (6 digit numeric values)
The user manually inputs the ID's on new rows in Column A
Row 1 is reserved and in use for something else
Row 2 is my header, so cell A2 says "ID"
Row 3-623 currently contain unique ID's
When the user inputs a new ID into cell A624, then they return to Tab 1, I want my formula/alert on Tab 1 to tell the user that they have duplicates in Column A of tab 2. I know the Conditional Formatting, but if the user copies in 100 new values, they won't necessarily see the highlighted cells. My tab 1 is my "checks and balances" and the last place the user is suppposed to look to ensure that they haven't created any duplicate ID's. If the user sees a warning message that says duplicates exist, then I'll tell them that they need to look at column A (for cells that have been conditionally highlighted).
One issue that I'm running into with the conditional highlighting is that I want cells A3:A1048576 to already have the conditional formatting - this way when the user inserts a value into Cell A624, then A625, etc they conditional formatting is already there. Right now with data in cells A3:A623, cells A624:A1048576 are all highlighted with the Red/Bold Red Font (which is okay I guess), but ideally it would be nice to not count 2+ empty cells as duplicates and I'll have to have my formula on Tab 1 not include the blank cells.
I DO NOT want to use the Remove Duplicates feature of Excel 2010. If I remove them I could be removing data in columns B, C, D, etc that belong to the Unique ID. I just need the user to be told in Tab 1 that they DO have duplicates and I'll train the user how to research this and fix it.
The reason I want to look for duplicates in the entire Column A is because the list of Unique ID's will grow over time.
I have a long range of cells (U3:AX3), all of which are empty save one. Is there a way to search through the range of cells, and return the contents of the one cell that contains text?
I would do this with a series of nested IF statements if there weren't more than 30 of them!
if I can use a named criteria as well as a named range. In essence what I am looking to do is count certain cells that meet the criteria in a certain named named range,

I would like to combine List1 and List2 into a 3rd named range called List3. I was wondering if this were possible without using any additional cells/columns (i.e. I don't want to use Column C like in the example shown in the link above).
Here's the formula from the example:
Code:

I've played around with it, but could not come with any that worked.

I have a certain range in a worksheet (D6:D27). I need to find the first blank row, or the last row with data +1. I would like a worksheet function of some sort that might be used like this

The result would be row 10 (the first blank row).
I have been searching for the past hour and just can not get anything to work right. I have tried many different suggestions, but I still draw a blank.
Column A contains a giant list of pathogens, with each often appearing in several ways (with/without species name, various misspellings, etc.) Column B contains truncated versions of maybe 20 or so pathogens that I'm interested in. What I want in column C is for an "X" or something to appear every time the code finds a pathogen of interest (that is, from column B) in the corresponding row of column A. For example:.............

I need method, using a button, that looks at a cell--say EO2, for example--, looks back on a master worksheet at a specified row and range for a match, then looks at the information from a specified range below the matching cell (The information in this column will either be blank or have an "X" in the cell), and then those rows that do not have an "X" will be hidden in the corresponding rows in the working worksheet. Therefore, if at any time the value in "EO2" ever changes, then it will automatically find a new match and repopulate and hide information as before. About 130 columns will have its own button so that a "query" can be made that depends on the information in a particular cell in that column.
The master worksheet now has matrix of 287 rows and 58 columns. Each row is for an operating procedure and each column shows a job code. An "X" in a coordinate cell for a column/row shows whether that job code is responsible for knowing that operating procedure. So, on the working sheet, an employee's primary job code is given underneath his or her name. When the button is pushed, all the operating procedures not required for a given person will be hidden and only the required ones will remain visible--grouped, if you will. Qualification dates will be easier to see now that the information is consolidated. Whenever someone transfers to a new position, a new code will be inputed on the working sheet. When the button is pushed, a new grouping will result. Any operating instructions that overlap will still have qualification dates, so that information will not need to be transcribed.
