Excel 2003 :: VBA Macro - How To Prevent Cell Border Changes To Unprotected Cells
Aug 3, 2012
I have unprotected cells in excel where I need to change the content (number) and cell color, but I don't want the cell borders to change. I'm a beginner with vba. I've tried protect sheet and workbook options, but looks like I need a vba code and don't know where to start.
Using excel 2003, Workbook has several sheets, all sheets are protected workbook is not. I have my cells containing formulas locked, I have unlocked the other cells that require input of various data. When the user goes to type in a "unlocked" cell, (to over write the now obsolete data) it will not allow the user to delete the data, the curser remains a cross and the formula bar or the cell itself will now allow any changes.
I have double checked that the cells are unlocked. I can enter data after the last entry in the unlocked row and or column, but I want to be able to "cut or delete the data that is no longer need and begin entering data from the beginning cell of choice. I want to copy this "old" data to an archive sheet, but it will now allow me to select it.
Example: I have 6 columns starting, (a to f) the formulas are in columns e and f and start at row 4 These columns are locked and hidden. Columns a,b,c and d are unlocked for user input. All data is started from A5 which I want it to start from each time the old data is deleted and new data entered. If I place my curser on any of the cells in the e and f rows, the cursor remains a cross which is what I expect it to do, but columns a to d are doing the same thing, they are acting as if they are locked OR atleast those cells in the a to d areas which have existing data, as I can enter below.
I am trying to assign a border and fill to cells, of identical colors, using VBA. Simple enough, yes? I am using the same RGB value for both the fill and the border, but in Excel 2003, they are assigned two different colors: the fill is the correct shade, but the border is not, which makes absolutely no sense to me. I could understand if both colors were slightly off from the shade I'm getting in 2007, but to have one be correct and the other not? I can manually assign the border to be the proper color, but this doesn't help.
I have selected a range of multiple rows and columns. I can change the alignment, cell color, where border lines appear, and the color of border lines.
However, I can not change the border line style. No matter what style I select, when drawn on the sheet it apppear as a thin solid line. I've tried all the dashed/dotted line options, but they appear to have no effect.
Ultimately, I want to color alternating rows of cells, and (since coloring hides grid lines) I want to add border lines the same color and style as the hidden grid lines.
i have a macro that opens 10 other workbooks and copies cells onto a "master" workbook. Until recently, everything worked fine. Suddendly, while it opens the 9 books and copies as it is expected, but when it opens the 10th wb, the macro breaks at a very simple copy/paste.
The weirdest thing is that after it breaks, I cannot select any cells neither in the opened wb nor in the master wb. This continues even after I press the "reset" button in the vba. So, I am only able to select objects (text boxes etc) in my wb and not any cells.
Also, the "arrow" icon on the design toolbar is not active. And I've tried pressing and de-pressing the F8 key, but I still cannot select any cells.
I have option explicit in the beginning of my macro. And i'm using excel 2003.
Is there a way to disable the Convert button on the File menu and also to limit the Save As file types? I have a workbook that I maintain in Office 2003 that gets filled out by customers and returned. When a user with a newer version of Excel converts the file, it doesn't function properly when I go open it. I believe the conversion issue has to do with Active X Controls, but I'm using them to do some things that won't work with Forms Controls, so replacing them would be a last resort. Also, upgrading Office isn't an option at this point.
Spreadsheet 1 has 10 columns of data (A-J). I want to copy a variable number of rows from spreadsheet 1 to spreadsheet 2.
When I paste into spreadsheet 2, I'd like to automatically insert blank cells in three places, taking the total number of columns to 13. I'd like columns C, F and I to be blank, and the last column with data to be M.
I will perform this task regularly, and add the copied cells to the bottom of spreadsheet 2, so I'd only like to insert blank cells within the range that I'm copying, not the entire spreadsheet.
I will then populate the blank cells with a VLOOKUP function. Do I need another macro to automatically add the formula to the cells, or is there a way to include this in the cell-inserting macro?
I have a dropdownmanu in sheet1 with different countries taken from Column A in Sheet3. I need a macro to run when i select a country example Denmark. It will fill out transmittal code and also country code in named cells for it in sheet1. Info taken from Sheet3
Transmittal code is in below testsheet in Sheet1 cell E12.
Country code is in Sheet1 cell.
But this have to be possible to change. Also the range for the country have to be possible to change.
This vba code i need to run as soon as i select a country in the dropdown manu.
But one thing i would like to solve also is. When i select a country it will create a dropdownlist in I13 taken from the info in column, i have in Sheet3 column F. So if i select example Denmark, it will show a dropdown menu in sheet1 I13, with the ledger codes 10 and 6x. I have tried to make this work but cant make it work good.
I use excel 2003. Please have a look and upload the testsheet back.
I have three workbooks that contain various types of information. I have an Overtime workbook that lists employees and calculates the straight time and overtime worked for the day. This is the main log that information will be pulled from.
I need writing a macro that will copy over information to an Absent Log workbook and a Production Model workbook.
The Absent Log workbook:
This workbook contains worksheets from each month. I need excel to do a lookup of the name in the Overtime workbook and copy the information from the "OT" column but if that column is empty I need it to pull the information from the "Personal DT" column.
The Production Model workbook:
I need this workbook to automatically pull the total straight hours and overtime hours to the production model for the correct day. This will also pull from multiple sheets.
I am going to be writing this in Excel 2010 but it will be primarily used in Excel 2003.
I have a workbook that has 30 tabs in it. Each tab is a report card for students. What I'd like to do is create another tab with a button on it that when I hit the button it will search through each tabs range of D12:D40, D48:D76, D84:D112, D120:D136, J12:J40, J48:J76, J84:J112, and J120:J136. And if any of these cells has an MS in them then this new sheet I have created will list each students name which is in cell E5 and list what they recieved the MS for. This will be in the same row number but in column B. So if cell D12 has an MS in it then this report will list the students name and what's in cell B12.
I'm trying to change a cell in a 2007 workbook but I'm getting this message:
"the cell or chart that you are trying to change is protected and therefore read only. To modify a protected cell or chart first remove the protection using the unprotect sheet command (review tab, changes group) you may be prompted for a password."
However, the unprotect button on the changes group tab is greyed out (the protect button is available though). The workbook isn't password protected and I'm not being asked for a password. What am I missing?
At the moment I do it all manually, and it takes forever. I am sure there must be a simple way of doing it. I am using Excel 2003, but could work in a newer version if required.
I'm stuck using Excel 2003 to auto-populate a cell.
I have a range of dates in five consecutive columns called:
Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3, Phase 4 and Phase 5
I enter the date that 'Phase 1' starts under the first header. Once Phase 2 starts I enter a date under 'Phase 2', and so on to Phase 5.
Each phase is consecutive to the next so will always be filled in from 1 to 5.
I want to create an additional column called 'Status' that shows the Column Title of the last phase with a date in it. For example, if Phase 1 to 3 had dates but 4 & 5 were blank, "Phase 3" would be displayed in the 'Status' column.
I've tried nesting some ISBLANK functions without any luck.
I would like to accomplish 2 things in my Excel 2010 spreadsheet by click a cell which already has a number and formatting in it.
1. How do I change the color of the cell, the color of the number in it, and the border around it. (Make it look like I just pressed a button by clicking it.)
2. At the same time have the text in different cell and the number in the selected cell appear in another different cell. (Text in a different cell = A , and the number in the selected cell = 23, the value in the resulting cell be "A 23") Everything I would like to happen at the same time by clicking the selected cell. I would also like this to be done several times by clicking different cells and not changing the previously selected cells.
I'm trying to double-click a cell to edit the contents, and I am off a few pixels, it treats the double-click as a double-click on the cell border, not the cell contents, and the focus jumps to another cell in the direction of the border instead of going into edit mode. The effect is as if I had pressed Ctrl and the arrow in the direction of the border I clicked on.
The only way I've found to disable this is to turn off the option "Enable fill handle and cell drag-and-drop", but unchecking that also disables actually useful things, like dragging the corner of a formula call to copy it down, etc.
Is there a good way to disable this cell jumping when I accidentally double-click a cell border?
I have a button, and I need a Macro that will cause it to clear all unprotected cells. I think I can figure out how to get it to clear an individual cell, and I suppose I could enter every cell I want cleared individually...but that might take awhile.
Is there a way to set up a Macro that will delete the contents of every unprotected cell? I guess I haven't tried it yet - if I protect the cells, will it not delete those? Also, there is a small image - I don't want that deleted either.
I have a spreadsheet that has I have protected. On this sheet I have a button labeled Reset Form. When you click the button it it goes to each Unprotected Cell and deltes the contents. I created this by starting the macro and then tabbing to each and every cell and deleteing the contents I then ended the macro...
Is there a code that I can use for to clear all unprotected cells as opposed to creating the macro manually?
I need to know if it is possible for a macro to run if a specific worksheet is unprotected?
For example, if someone takes off the protection to my costings sheet either through VBA or finding out the password, i want Excel to run a certain macro if possible?
I am trying to conditionally format the top middle and bottom thirds of a range of data. Problem is, that the range needs to be flexible as sometimes there may be a maximum of 36 cells with data, but sometimes there may be less (so there are blank cells in the range that need not be counted). The methods I have tried always include the blank cells, and so it is not equally formatting the thirds (as it includes the blanks cells as part of the bottom data)....
Here are the 2 methods Ive tried so far using excel 2003) Top 34%: =IF(INT(COUNT($D$3:$D$38)*34%)>0,LARGE($D$3:$D$38,INT(COUNT($D$3:$D $38)*34%)),MAX( $D$3:$D$38))0,LARGE($D$3:$D$38,INT(COUNT($D$3:$D $38)*67%)),MAX( $D$3:$D$38))0,LARGE($D$3:$D$38,INT(COUNT($D$3:$D $38)*100%)),MAX( $D$3:$D$38))
I have created an Excel template for others to use. They can enter data in certain unprotected cells and the data is linked to other places in the workbook. If they Cut and Paste something in the unprotected cells, the formulas get a REF#. There is no problem if they Copy and Paste. How can I prevent the REF# error without resorting to VBA?
The Special GoTo function doesn't have a listing for highlighting (going to) only protected or (preferribly) unprotected cells. Is there an easy way to do this?
I Need to protect some cells from being Changed or deleted, if i protect the whole sheet there are some cells that need to be changed using the formatting bar I.e borders, colours, font- colour, Merged cells.
the protection setting allows you to leave individual cells unprotected however you still cannot change the border for example.
Excel 2007 or 2003 Is there code to be able choose the formating of a cell when right clicked if the cell is Unprotected. But, the sheet is Protect and the Workbook is Protected. Without Unprotecting anything 1st.
The reason being is sometimes the user may need to change the type of font from Arial, or Gdt or Y14.5M.
I am trying to use the simplest code possible (being a novice) to execute a macro which makes a copy of Cell A1:A4 and paste its values to Cells B1:B4 if cell B5=1 (or whatever). The Macro with copy and paste works (I recorded it and in my testing it was ok). And also the function, that contains If-Then status of cell B5, works and calls correctly the Macro.
Yet when the macro is called by the function (=CopyMyCells(B5)), the Macro (MacroCopy) runs - I tested this with a Msgbox - but stops just in doing what I need, i.e. in doing the copy-paste process. Here the code which is placed in a module of the proper Worksheet (Excel 2003, on WinXPSp3):
