Excel 2010 :: Freezes Or Hangs In The Middle Of Work?
May 24, 2013
I have an issue with the excel freeze in our organisation.
Our organisation works on Citrix and the office applications have been upgraded to 2010 very recently. We have both 2003 excel users and 2010 excel users. There is a user who has a problem working on excel 2010 the excel freezes.Excel 2010 works fine for some time and all at a sudden hangs, once its hung it freezes all the other applications.
The same file runs properly on the other 2010 systems. The Excel file which hangs are also not of huge in size.
I am unable to get to the rootcause of the issue why the excel freezes or hangs in the middle of the work getting to the root cause of the issue and an answer for the excel hanging.
Background: The user makes a selection from a drop down box on the main sheet (sheet5, G12). The drop-down box is linked to *Sheet31.Pax_Nav*. If the drop-down box's linked cell value is less than 5, then do nothing (manual input required). If it is greater than 5, then the vlookup matches that number to a person in the database and returns their weight. The code will pull the required person's weight but then Excel will hang and freeze.
Private Sub Worksheet_Calculate() On Error Resume Next If Sheet31.Range("Pax_Nav") > 5 Then Sheet5.Range("G12").Value = Application.WorksheetFunction.VLookup(Sheet31.Range("Pax_Nav").Value, Sheet31.Range("H17:L48"), 5, False) Else End If End Sub
I've managed to use some code I found to add a new row below the selected row, and duplicate all the forumlas of the source row. It worked fine dozens of times yesterday, but today it's decided not to work. It gets as far as creating the new row(s), but then just hangs & excel crashes before duplicating the formulas. I've even tried reverting to an earlier version, which also worked fine, but this crashes also!
Sub Add_New_Row() ' Unlock Worksheet Worksheets("Sheet1").Unprotect Password:="*****" Dim x As Long ActiveCell.EntireRow.Select 'So you do not have to preselect entire row If vRows = 0 Then vRows = Application.InputBox(prompt:= _ "How many rows do you want to add?", Title:="Add Rows", _ Default:=1, Type:=1) 'Default for 1 row, type 1 is number If vRows = False Then Exit Sub End If 'if you just want to add cells and not entire rows 'then delete ".EntireRow" in the following line Dim sht As Worksheet, shts() As String, i As Integer Redim shts(1 To Worksheets.Application. ActiveWorkbook. _ Windows(1).SelectedSheets.Count)..................................
My objective is to pull specific values from an external file corresponding to the correct name and year of my choosing. The first way I thought would be best is to use an INDEX/MATCH function. The problem is the external files change names so I would need a method to easily change the source file name from one cell. I then stumbled across the INDIRECT function, but the INDIRECT function will only work when the source file is also opened. I then came across Harlan Grove's pull function which allows you to import data from closed excel files.
So, this is what my formula looks like: =INDEX(pull("'"&G12&"");MATCH(C15;pull("'"&G14&"");0);MATCH(D15;pull("'"&G16&"");0))
Cells G12,G14, and G16 contain the file paths for the ranges. C15 is name and D15 is year.
The problem I have though is that when I try to execute the function, Excel gets stuck. if the code cannot handle large amounts of data. I tested the code with a simple SUM function for a small range from an external file and it worked just fine.
I have an intensive VB program I've written that the user kicks off by clicking a button. I update a particular cell near the button with progress numbers so they can see what's going on. (This calculation can take up to 10 minutes.)
Sometimes, though, the UI stops updating. I know the calculation is still running because it completes eventually.
I am guessing Excel is getting too many updates to its screen (i.e. that cell) to keep up with the calculation going on in another thread, so it just gives up on the updating.
Is there a way to force Excel to keep updating the screen? I'm willing to give up the 0.01% slowdown in exchange for continuing to see progress. I see no need for the VB calculation thread to hog out the screen updater.
Here in our department we made a pretty elaborate macro that takes a report and sorts them out to 17 different sheets in a one workbook. This Macro pulls a file from a specific location on our server and then opens the CSV sorts it out color codes all the important information and saves it back onto the server under you specific initials.
They are four PC's along with our Managers laptop that run this Macro daily.
About 3 weeks ago my Managers laptop stops running the Macro completely and hangs in the middle of the whole thing. Eventually crashing Excel.
We try to remove the modules and re-import them back into the personal macro workbork but this does not work. The Macro's did not change and still fully function on the other four desktops to this day.
I uninstall Office on my Managers laptop and reinstall. Import the Modules again and still hangs up in very same spot it did 3 weeks ago.
I've tried to lower the macro security to the lowest level also and I've still had no luck with this laptop. I don't understand. The Macro's function perfectly on other PC's but will not function on this laptop.
how to use the offset function to create a dynamic range in Excel 2010. An in-house Excel form I work with spans columns A thru P and has three sections. In Section 2 the user fills in employees who are requesting to work overtime. Section 2 starts row 12 and ends row 61. It's sometimes necessary to add rows to this section. How do I make this section/range dynamic using the offset function?
I have a bar graph in excel 2010 and the vertical access is stuck in the middle of the graph. When I right click on the axis and select "format axis" I have an option to set where the horizontal axis crosses but never the vertical.
I am working in Excel 2010 (Windows 8) and am having real problems trying to find a function/formula that will work with both numbers and text. I am trying to identify if the contents of Col A cells and Col C cells on each row are duplicated within a worksheet, and if they are, to add a 'J'.
(Column A is a list of numerical company codes and Column C is a list of adviser codes using the letter A-G. If a company ID code has more than one of the same adviser codes referenced to it, it is termed 'Joint', hence the 'J').
The formula I've used is: =IF(A2:C2, FREQUENCY>1, "J")
First I made some contents and drew a border from Home > Font > all Borders on an Excel 2010 file. So it became like below image (capture1). After that I wanted to print it so went to File > Print to see its preview. But the problem is that the lines between tue and wed and also between mon and tue are not shown neither in preview nor when printing. The height of row 7 until 17 is 24 (that is 32 pixel) but heights of the rest of the rows are normal (20 pixel).
My company recently upgraded everyone to Microsoft 2010 from 2007 version. I have no substantial VBA skill and left with a VBA code which is supposed to extract a list of outlook emails sitting in a shared mailbox into Excel.
I was using that VBA code in Outlook 2007 and it worked fine but shows the following error when run in Outlook 2010: 'Run-time error '-2147221233 (8004010f)': The attempted operation failed. An object could not be found. Here is part of the code:
[Code] .....
It worked after one of the members suggested to "click on any line of this code and press F8 repeatedly until the yellow focus moves to the error line, don't press F8 anymore. Now in immediate window, copy paste each of below lines, press enter after each line. Let us know where the error occur." However, it stop working the next day.
I have csv file with tab delimited fields (see attached blacklist.csv). 3rd and 4th fields are in format dd/mm/yyyy hh24:mi:ss, some fields can be zero. I need to split data to columns and display datetime fields in format dd.mm.yyyy hh:mm:ss.
OK... open csv in Excel, select column A, press button "Split in columns", select tab as delimiter, choose date format (DMY) for 3rd and 4th field and press OK. Test is splitted into columns, now select columns C and D and select desired format "dd.mm.yyyy hh:mm:ss". Then I select columns A:E and set column widths to fit data in columns. This all is OK and without problems (see attached file Handmade.xlsx).
But now... Now I record all previous step into macro. There is macro text: [Code] ....
Now I copy macro text into clipboard and open blacklist.csv again. Insert button to list and bind it to new macro. Paste text of macro from clipboard. (See attached file blacklist_beforeClick.xlsm). Now click button Btn and voila... some dates remain in previous format, some dates seems to be in desired format, but day and month are swapped. Why are there differences when comparing data made by hand and data made by macro??? compare.jpg This is the same behavior in more computers, some use Czech version of Excel 2010, some use English version.
I've created a spreadsheet at work that has two summary tabs which contain hyperlinks to around 30 separate sheet tabs.
On each sheet tab there is a list of unique values in column A (and other information relating to each value in columns B to D which are repeated for more than one unique value). In column E, users enter a test script name against each unique value they wish to 'reserve', and the macro picks out the unique test script names and via the COUNTIF formula counts the frequency of each test script name for each of the different values in column B.
My problem is that the macro seems to work fine if the workbook is not shared, but errors if the workbook is saved as shared. The error is 'Run time error 1004 - Unable to select the MergeCells property of the Range class'.
Here is the macro code:
Sub Get_Policies_Per_Script(updCol As Long, ShtName As String) Dim rowctr As Long Dim tgtrow As Long
Const ppsformula As String = "=COUNTIFS($A$3:$A$65000,I$24,$E$3:$E$65000,$G"
If updCol = 5 Then 'test name column has been modified
I am currently using a pop up calendar in Excel 2010 that with CTL+SHIFT+B that a calendar pops up, you select your date, and then the calendar closes. What I now need is to write a code or formula or something that when I click in any cell in column F lets say that the calendar opens automatically in that cell and then still close automatically after the date selection is made.
I have a problem with a nested loop in my macro as Excel hangs every time i run my script. I suspect it is because my sheets have too many elements.
I am doing a software localization, and I need to translate records in column A (english) to column X (slovenian) in the same row. With each new version of the software, the number of rows changes.
I already manually did one translation (44000 rows), and now i need to do a new version translation, so I want to use my old translation (because many if not most of the elements are the same) and insert values into the new excel file.
In the new file in sheet1 I have a full column A with english words and an empty C column with slovenian words that I need to fill.
Into sheet2 I copied the old english in column A and slovenian translation in column B.
On sheet 3 i created a button that when clicked, goes though each row in sheet1.columnA, compares it to sheet2.colimnA, and if there is a match, copies the value from sheet2.columnB into sheet1.columnC. So, this should fill most of the translations I need to do, and the rest I will do manually
I am quite new to VBA so this is what I came up with:
[Code]....
The number of rows is around 44000 in each sheet. How I could optimize or even completely avoid the nested loop, because each time i click the button I need to wait for almost an hour and then Excel hangs.
Using Excel 2010, I set up a simple workbook with a spreadsheet on one page and the ranges for data validation on another. I successfully linked the fields in the "Category" and "Tender" columns with the data on the second sheet, making nice drop down menus. Everything works fine on my computer. However, when we open the workbook on a different station, the drop down menus disappear. If you highlight any of the "Category" or "Tender" fields, the little drop down prompt is missing; they behave like regular, un-formatted fields. It appears that the data validation became un-linked.
We tried opening versions with certain fields locked (Mainly the Total, Breakdown, and Summary areas, but the fields with data validation were still editable), and also completely unlocked documents. Every time, the drop down lists were lost when opened on different stations.
I've attached the completely unlocked version : 00_FLEX TRAVEL EXPENSE REPORT_v3.xlsx
Forget to check a box or something? This seems way harder for me to figure out that it should be!
Consider this procedure to execute a MS Word mailmerge from within Excel:
Code: Option Explicit Dim objword As Object Dim odoc As Object Dim odoc2 As Object Dim wdsendtonewdocument As Object Dim mypath As String
Sub merge()
[Code] ........
The application hangs on the line in red. The file name (worksheets("Frontpage").Range("B15")) exists. It hangs with periodic dialogues "Microsoft Office is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action."
I end up having to go into task manager to close the word application before I can regain Excel control again.
However, we can't find the correct workaround to the issue.
In Excel 2002, the behavior was for the macro to work great on small numbers of rows, but to just stop on large numbers of rows. After it stopped, the user would manually run the macro throughout the spreadsheet, by holding down Ctrl + N.
In Excel 2007, the behavior of the program is different, and Excel actually freezes up.
We've narrowed down the problem to be possibly "memory related."
However, we don't know the correct workaround for this.
For example, in the posting below (the referenced link) they suggest using "variant arrays" to address memory limitations type of issues ... but I'm not sure of how to implement those.
I've just inherited a load of Excel files I need to continue using, but my predecessor has done something that disables the middle-click scroll ability.
I can still scroll up and down by turning the wheel, but I want to be able to click it and scroll in all directions at speed - I didn't realise how much I used this until I couldn't. Can't see anything in the VBA sheet properties, and they are all .xlsx files. Nothing leaps out of the settings either. If I create a new file or a file of mine within the same session, they work fine.
I have and issue within my For/Next loop. I'm simply gathering name and address data from columns in the workbook and printing them out (one at a time) onto a preprinted form letter. I use offsetts to move around the data row and get the appropriate items(address1, address2, city, etc). The first time through, it prints out. I'm then raising the row offset by 1 to get the second name and address data. I'm using a static starting point on the data sheet but the second time through, I get a Runtime error 1004 at the point where it is supposed to select that starting point. Oddly, entering Debug I have done something which allows it to continue. It gets the second batch of data and prints properly. I have not been able to duplicate how that happened.
I have a multipage form that I'm using to create a wizard that accepts data from the active workbook via a refedit box, however, when I try to execute the entire form freezes at runtime. The editor will bring up the workbook but the entire workbook freezes.
I cannot click any of the buttons on the form, exit the form, input the range into the refedit box, or even click on any cells in the worksheet. Everything was working perfectly fine until I started adding command buttons to other pages of the multipage form, but no code has been added.
I don't even have code to link the pages together, all I did was add command buttons and change the names on them. I'm having a hard time believing this is what's causing excel to freeze up, but I haven't done anything else. I've checked my loops and they are fine.
I've also gone back to another copy and deleted everything on the other pages and left only page 1, but this is still failing.
I am having trouble with my workbook. When I am changing the value in the main cell ("Moses!B5") the whole program freezes. The code is as follows and was developed to ensure the values in my cells did not change as the main cell value changed:
Private Sub Worksheet_Calculate() For Each c In Range("A1:AF14") If c.Value = 1 Then c.Value = 1 Next End Sub
I think the problem is that all of my sheets are calculating and I only want the one which contains the cell which matches my main cell ("Moses!B5"). Is there a way to trigger calculation only for the sheet which contains a date cell matching my main cell?
I have been working on an excel spreadsheet and have come acrss this problem once before too. When I try to open this file it hangs and does not respond. the file size is not too big (490KB). When I disable macros i can open the same file but when the macro are enabled, it hangs. have been trying to look for a solution but just dont know what to do.
I am trying to send bulk emails from my excel 2010 - however I am getting a POP UP. find the screen shot in the enclosed word document So every time a new mail is sent from excel we need to press the button allow Is there a way where I can turn off this warning.
I have a little issue with a list-box. When i open my workbook and i click on the List Box the list box freezes, excel doesn't let me select it until i go to design mode, select the list box then close out of design mode. This sort of "fixes" the issue but i would rather not do so this way.
