Fitting Data (Text Vs Number) To Columns
Aug 17, 2009
I have a very big list in one column with the customers name and its account number. I am looking for a way to extract just the number from the cell.
I am aware of the 'fit data to columns' option but some of the customer names have an inconsistant number of spaces to assign a delimiter.

I'm struggling with getting my Excel worksheet to fit nicely on the pg for printing to .pdf. I could tinker with column widths manually to work this out for a printed report. But I need to print a couple hundred reports with varying column widths, so I need a vba solution.
The context is that I'm using vba to process two sets of interlinked data on a worksheet. I only want to print one set of data, and keep the second set out of the print view. To do this, I'm keeping the first set of data in columns 1 to 10 and the second set of data in columsn 21 to 30. I set the print range to only include columns 1 to 10.
This works fine for keeping the second set of data off the printed pg. The problem is that there is always a gap between the end of column 10 and the maximum width of the printed pg. Given the formatting of the report, this doesn't look very good.
I know that page setup offers the "fit to" option. This would work if I wanted to fit everything on the worksheet on the pg, but I don't. I just want to fit columns 1 to 10 to the pg. Is there a way to do this, allowing for varying widths in columns 1 to 10? Is there a way to do it via vba?

What If we had to replace any number..
Lets say, if we had to seperate NUMBER TEXT NUMBER in different combinations....
B2 contains values like these then
TOM CRUISE 12
TOM 5879 CRUISE
TOM CRUISE 123456789
123456789 TOM CRUISE
123 TOM CRUISE 456
[ = SUBSTITUTE(B2,"1234567890","") ]
I am at my wit's end pondering over it?
How to make the SUBSTITUTE function work for each individual digit?

I am trying to split names across columns. The problem is that some names
spilt into 3 columns (first, middle, last), and others split across 5 or 6
(extra names, etc.)
Is there a way to specify split, using SPACE as a delimiter, but only split
on the first TWO spaces, then leave the rest alone?

I have a 2000 row sheet with an address field that contains the apartment number and the address. The text is displayed as unit number, then hyphen and the building/street number for example '101-1234 15th Street'. I'm looking to cut the building number from the cell and paste it into a seperate column. Ideally removing the hyphen completely, so that I have two columns 'unit number' and 'building/street address'.

I have a text file that I need to open in MS Excel 2007. The file contains the following data. (Each column is delimited by the "|" character.)
Part #|Inventory ID
1743|213,221
1864|10,40
1948|1170,1180
5265|100,104,107,10004
Ultimately, I need three columns but the data needs to look the same as it did before I opened the file.
When I open the file for the first time, I use “Text to Columns” to delimit the fields by the "|" character. The problem is that the Inventory IDs in the middle column get a bit whacky.
Here's what I'm left with:
Part # Inventory ID
1743 213,221
1864 10,40
1948 11,701,180
5265 10,010,410,710,004
The comma is retained appropriately when there are two 2- or 3-digit Inventory IDs.
When a row has multiple, longer Inventory IDs or Inventory IDs that vary in length, the comma is moved to every 3rd decimal place.
I tried putting quotation marks around the data before I opened the text file for the first time but that didn’t do anything. I tried Custom Formatting to retain the comma position (0000,0000) but this only worked when I had two 4 digit IDs. I also changed the number type to Text and General. Once the comma was changed, I couldn’t figure out how to get it back.
How to best retain the format of my Inventory IDs.

What I have is a column of data(text) which contains amongst all the text three strings of text in ever cell in the column which I require copying into three adjoining cells
The data I require is :-
(a) The persons name which is always after the word Requester e.g. Requester Steve Robinson
(b) Their office location which is directly after the persons name and is in brackets e.g. (Newcastle User)
(c) The Approving persons name which is preceded by Approved by e.g. Approved by Christine Hunting
See examples 1 & 2 below
Example 1
CR0/CRZ3651 Requestor Steve Robinson (Newcastle User) Tel: 01234 798157 Approved by Christine Hunting
Please install and configure 2 Ultra 2s (typhoon and lancaster) for use as ARTE workstations. These workstations require Solaris 2.5.1 plus the same patches as before
Example 2
CR0/CRZ3118 Requestor Doug Cunningham (Newport User) Tel: 0114 9881480 Approved by John Smithers
Please provide support to set up Cisco 2691 Router and PIX-506E Firewall to enable external connection of a remote terminal for project work.
As you will appreciate the text in the cells is of non standard lenght and the three pieces of information can be located virtually any where in the text

Using the text to columns option on a comma separated file in csv format leads to the right preview in the text to columns wizard.
The column titled "ATTIC: Zone ..." shows the desired format in the preview window. Please look at the screenshot 1.jpg.
After pushing the finish button to obtain the result the number format gets suddenly changed and differs from the preview.
Again check for the "ATTIC: Zone ..." column as reference: 2.jpg
Is there a menu where one can look up, or specify how to format data to force the right comma placement? What settings might be wrong?

I need a formula that will look into a range of data and tell me whan the last time a value exceeded 0 (working backwards).
So below the first row would return a value of 6, the next 5, the next 0, the next 1 and so on....
I can do it with an if formula but the amount of days it will be looking at will be too many, plus the range will keep growing as time passes.

I have an issue with the Data - Text to Columns operation.
I paste some data into a sheet that is comma delimeted. I have a macro that runs the Data - Text to Columns operation and then moves the data to another sheet.(The data I need to paste is coming from a non-Excel application.)
I then copy a second set of data to another sheet and when I paste it, it automatically does the Data - Text to Columns operation but I do not want it to. I have seen this several times before and when I am manually manipulating the data it isn't a problem. When I use macros to manipulate the data, I don't get the desired results because my macro includes this operation.
I have done a little testing and this issue doesn't seem to always present itself. How can I paste the data without Excel trying to out-think me and just leave the data in the comma delimeted format it is in when I paste? What causes this? Its seems like Excel is seeing similar data and "assuming" I want to perform the same operation I just performed.

I need to find data in columns B and C and add the figures from column F, which drop down one line. I have written the following formula which is giving me far higher figures than I should be getting
= SUMIF($B$2614:$B$2640,"bhree*",IF($C$2614:$C$2640,">=01/07/2006",( OFFSET($C$2614:$C$2640,1,3,1,1))))

i have cells with city and state in them and i'm trying to separate the one column into two columns. the problem is, i'm trying to keep the city name in one column and the state in the other. some of my cells have two word cities like new albany, or upper arlington. the text to columns feature is separating those cells into 3 columns not 2. is there a way to do this?
example:
worthington, oh
upper arlington, oh
text to columns splitting upper arlington into 3 different cells because the only delimiter in the cell is a space. i need to keep upper arlington in one cell and oh in another.

I have a problem with text to columns with data downloaded from our website. The address field is coming through with the whole address in a single cell with multiple rows. I have tried the following but all I get is the first row in the first colimn and the rest of the data:
Text to Columns, Delimited, Other and ALT-0010
Text to Columns, Delimited, Other and ALT-010
Text to Columns, Delimited, Other and ctrl-j
I have even created a macro to replace the hard returns with commas and then use comma as a delimiter but that still does the same.
I have attached a file with two of the records (1 tab for the original data and one with the commas)
Finally, I have tried this in both 2003 & 2010 and get the same issue in both.

is there a way to highlight a whole column to change the data from text to a number? When I initially download the data into the Bank Data Download tab, the information is in a text format, I believe for formulas to work, the data should be in number format, correct? Is there an easy way to select a whole column and change the format? If I highlight a column and do the format cells and change the data to a number, it does not take effect unless I click on each individual cell and click Enter. Is there any easier way?
The second part of my call for help is I would like for the data to flow from the Bank Download tab, into the Disbursement Summary tab. The identifiers would be the Customer Reference Number, column N of the Bank Data Download tab, and match to the corresponding day and column in the Disbursement Summary tab.

I am trying to get a macro to run in excel that takes a simple text to columns command in one line of data and runs the command on a loop through however many rows of data there happen to be.
I've attached two screenshots - one with what I've got now (Before.jpg) and what I'd like to have after the macro runs (After.jpg). The code below is what I used to get the first text to column breakout, which I can hopefully run on a loop to breakout anything in the DEPT column that contains a "/". It can ignore the rows that only have one department to begin with.
Selection.TextToColumns Destination:=Range("K2"), DataType:=xlDelimited, _
TextQualifier:=xlDoubleQuote, ConsecutiveDelimiter:=False, Tab:=False, _
Semicolon:=False, Comma:=False, Space:=False, Other:=True, OtherChar _
:="/", FieldInfo:=Array(Array(1, 1), Array(2, 1)), TrailingMinusNumbers:=True
Eventually I'll want to create another macro that transposes the breakout text back into the DEPT column and populates it with the corresponding data, but I figure I'll take things one step at a time.

My problem is that data from previous applications are "bleeding" into new applications while running my macro.
I am utilizing the macro below to paste an application and then to convert the application to upper case in addition to some additional formating changes. After performing the macro I save the newly created document to a different folder. With new applications I repeat the above steps.
I tried to incorporate the clearing of the clipboard in my macro using: Edit=>office clipboard=>clear all. The keys strokes during the " record macro" process do not seem to record in the macro.
I am using Excel 2003, SP2
Sub Process_Application()

' Process_Application Macro
' Macro recorded 3/23/2009
'

I am trying to count the # of rows in a spreadsheet in which there is non-blank text data in 2 separate columns. For instance, if the spreadsheet looked like the one below (dashes just for formatting purposes):
NAMES-------THIS-------------THAT
Mary-------some text--------some more text
John-------<blanks>---------just text here
Sue--------just some here-----<blanks>
Dave-------something--------something else
Adam------<blanks>-----------<blanks>
The total # of rows with something in both the "THIS" and "THAT" columns above would therefore be 2.
