Formula To Split Characters In Cell
Jan 14, 2009In A1 cell i have the following text
"CAMPBELL # ERASCO O ZMKE # UNGARISCHE GULASCHSUPPE # 390 ML"
A2: CAMPBELL
A3: ERASCO O ZMKE
A4: UNGARISCHE GULASCHSUPPE
A5:390 ML
In A1 cell i have the following text
"CAMPBELL # ERASCO O ZMKE # UNGARISCHE GULASCHSUPPE # 390 ML"
A2: CAMPBELL
A3: ERASCO O ZMKE
A4: UNGARISCHE GULASCHSUPPE
A5:390 ML
I am suffering with split a long descriptions into 3 cells with criteria 1st cell not more than 30 characters, 2nd cell not more than characters and 3rd cell will locate the remaining characters there. I think this is quite easy if I use LEN/MID/RIGHT/LEFT formula. However, I wish the formula will smart enough to split word by word. refer to example below:-
"My lecturer replied, that i really did very bad in final, nothing's gonna change my plan."
If I use left(A1,30) formula, the result is "My lecturer replied, that i re"however, the word "really" is cut half way. I am finding the formula that split description to not more than 30 characters and won't cut my string and become incomplete word. Expected result should be 1st cell "My lecturer replied, that i", then "really did very bad in final," at 2nd cell.
I have previous been given the below macro from here that splits a string of text in one cell into groups of 30 and then puts them into several cells, works perfectly.
What I would like to incorpate now is the ability to overide the point at which it splits the text.
i.e. if the inputter puts a "|" (for example) in the original text, this will cause a split in the text and it will restart its 30 count from this point onwards.
Example of what I would like to achieve:
Cell A1 = I would like to change this string of text into groups of 30, where this appears | I would like it to start a new split of 30s from this point on wards and again if another one of these | appears in the text.
Cell B1 = I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE THIS
Cell C1 = STRING OF TEXT INTO GROUPS OF
Cell D1 = 30, WHERE THIS APPEARS

I have data in Col A. and i want to split (50 characters) in each row.
I know the formula but dragging formula to following rows is not working.
I have to write the formula manually. I write in b1 B2 and B3 as follows.
I want following
=MID(A1,1,50)
=MID(B1,251,50)
=MID(C1,501,50)
When i drag down the formula to bottom rows it repeat
Desire Formula in COL B
aaa asdf 242424 alkjsaf 32234 asfasf 23234 dfdfdfd
=MID(A1,1,50)
aaa asdf 242424 alkjsaf 32234 asfasf 23234 dfdfdfd
=MID(B2,251,50)
[code]....
I want to copy down the formula to 10k rows. When i select b2 and b3 and drag down i get following results.
aaa asdf 242424 alkjsaf 32234 asfasf 23234 dfdfdfd
=MID(A1,1,50)
aaa asdf 242424 alkjsaf 32234 asfasf 23234 dfdfdfd
=MID(B2,251,50)
aaa asdf 242424 alkjsaf 32234 asfasf 23234 dfdfdfd

This formula I want to apply it in another workbook. It split in different columns the content of a cell.
The formula is below:
[Code] .....
In cell A2 I have the following data:
|516582-001-99|414816-001-99|414816-003-99|516582-001-99|
If I apply the formula above in cells B2 to E2 it returns a blank cells. But if I delete the first "|" sign in the left side manually the formula works perfectly by splitting the cell into columns from B2 to E2. The issue here is that I have more than 300,000 records. Just imagine the amount of time invested in just deleting the first "|" at the left side.
I need a variation of the formula above that in first place delete the first "|" at the left side and after that continue with the proper work of the formula.
Need to split a group of up to 15 characters to be in a specific cells.
An example of what would need to be split up would be the following:
ASJ-Z61-123456-714
Need it to be in the following Format:
Letters | Number | Number | Number | Number | Numbers | Number| Number
Only or letter or letter
symbol | company | market | ledger | sub region | serial/Account Number | Number | Year
AS | J | Z | 6 | 1 | 123456 | 71 | 4
I am just not sure what function or formula that I need to use.
I have a spreadsheet that uses sql to gather data from our servers. From this data, I use concatenate function to put the data into one cell ready to copy/paste into our sms program. The program will only take 160 characters at a time..
Result I need:
For the cell to split into two/three cells if over 160 characters (and to break after the last complete word), and if appropriate, it needs to say 1of2 at the beginning of the 1st message for example, and 2of2 at the beginning of the second.
I want to accept a string, well typically a name say "Manik" from one of the cells in Excel say "B2"; then split it as characters M a n i k and display it in five other cells like say from D2:D6. how can I do it? Also the name may change its not a fixed string.

ãÑÍÈÇ-Èßã-åäÇ-Ýí-ÇæÒßÑíÏ
Data>text to columns convert only to original alone letters:
ã ÑÍ È Ç- È ß ã - å ä Ç- Ý í- Ç æ Ò ß Ñ í Ï
But what I need is split the letters as it mixed in the same cell:
ãÜ Ñ ÍÜ ÈÜ Ç- ÈÜ ßÜ ã- åÜ äÜ Ç- ÝÜ í- Ç æ Ò ßÜ Ñ íÜ

I want to split the contents in a cell using a formula.
For Example, I have ***PavanKumar*** in A1
I want ***Pavan*** in A1 and ***Kumar*** in B1

In an adjacent column, I am seeking to display the letters, numbers or symbols that appear before '/'. I would normally solve this little problem with something like =left(A5,2) or some combination of left and len. This method fails when the formula finds a len of 8 when the previous highest len was 7.
Formula to split a cell at the first break/space and to keep the rest of the cell contents together? For example to separate addresses from the street and street name.
Eg.
A1
1111 AAAA BBB
into
B1 C1
111 AAAA BBB
I have tried to use text to columns but as the cell contains three or four words I don't want to have to rejoin cells afterwards.
Here's my problem. I have a cell where there are many data strings seperated by ",". Each data string has a seperate value of its own like for e.g:
A2: aa,ab,ac
String Value
aa 1
ab 1
ac 3
What I want it accomplish is that, split the A2 cell into the different data string entities seperated by ",", then get the corresponding value of each of the data string entity, and to take the average of all the values of the different data string entities.
I need a formula for batch allocation automatically.

I got a question regarding a what formula can i use to act like the Split method in programming. I would like if this can be done with a formula not programming cos i am a programmer Basically i got a column full of data in the following format:.dddd.ddddddd.ddddd. Now the number of the "d" can be random in between the dots. So i would like to be able to split the line by looking at the "." .There is one thing though that each line does have 3 or 4 "." characters.
View 3 Replies View Relatedyou guys very kindly helped me with a spreadsheet a couple of months ago, but i now need to adapt it for another dept. I have completed as much as I can.
I need column C and E in the 'totals tab' to only calculate contract and upgrade sales respectively (found in 'service orders' tab). I also need Scott's and ash's individual sales to be calculated in corrisponding tabs. Most of the formulas are in place so just need them tweaked slightley.
is there a function that will split a text string based on a symbol. I know how tyo use left and right, which are based on a set number of characters but I want to split based on a "/" mark. whats to the left of the "/" mark and whats to the right of the "/" mark. any ideas. an exaplme is: tom / tim. i want a formula that will put the word "tom" in a cell and another formula that will put "tim" in another cell.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo we have people's names in a table. First name in one column and last name in another column. We have a 3rd column where we can use 8 characters to do a combination of First 5 of Last Name + first 3 of first name. However, if someone's last name is only 3 or 4 characters, we'd then want to take more from the first name to fill out the 8 characters.
So:
Charles Johnson -> Johnscha
John Smith -> Smithjoh
Willian Wu -> Wuwillia
What's the best way to do that without creating some crazy formula with tons of if/thens?
I'm using Excel 2000 and I have a spreadsheet with 4 columns (A-D) and many (500+) rows.
Part 1:
#########################################
Colums A & B both contain identical data - a first name and a last name in the format "John Doe".
I want the second word ("Doe") removed from all cells in Column A so that only the first name remains, and I want the first word ("John") to be removed from every cell in Column B so that only the last name remains.
So, where A1 & B1 both started with the data "John Doe" now A1 contains only "John" and B1 contains only "Doe".
#########################################
Part 2:
####################################################
Column C contains addresses in the format:
"#5 - 123 Fake Street, Some City, CA 90210"
There is ALWAYS a comma and a space after the street address, then the name of the city or town followed by more data which may include one or more commas.
I would like everything BEFORE the first comma to remain in column C, and everything AFTER the first comma & space to be moved into Column D of the same row. The first comma and space are not needed again.
So, where C1 started with "#5 - 123 Fake Street, Some City, CA 90210", it now only contains "#5 - 123 Fake Street" and D1 now contains "Some City, CA 90210".

Ok so my formula simply wants to substitute a really long string of text with a blank cell. Problem is that the really long string of text goes over the 255 char limit for a formula.
How can I go about solving this problem. I think you could name the string of text as a variable such as "long text" and then use the substitute formula as such:
=SUBSTITUTE(A1,"long text", "")
Something like that? I don't know if it would work or the steps to name the variable.
I have a large spreadsheet which holds lots of data with date ranges that i need to performs different actions to. Any way to identify the number of days, per calender month, that falls in a date range.
sample data...
Start Date
End Date

New Value
08/03/2010
18/06/2010
16758.2
16758.1

I need to break down the total number of days per month
Jan
Feb
Mar
Apr
May
Jun
Jul
Aug
Sep
Oct
Nov
Dec

As you can see this also laps into a new year, which poses my next problem, ill probably just add more columns on to the end of the table for that though...
I will later apply different calculations to these cells but in short need to get a calculation for the number of days per month first.
(in short spreading the new value out accross the year then multiplying it by the days... i also need to apply a further daily volume cal to it).
I have stacked formulas that look for values via vlookup and index match functions.
Sometimes the worksheet will have ( 100 ) separated into 3 columns (open parenthesis, number, closed parenthesis) and the formula will pull the first column containing the parenthesis. How can I write the formula to ignore the "(" and get to the "100"?
The formula uses ISERROR to move forward, could I incorporate ISNUMBER also or is there a better way to do this?
I need to come up with a formula to verify that the last 3 characters of a text string match the 3 characters in the adjacent cell. So I am comparing in the example below Column B to Column A.
Ex:
A1 010 B1 3.010
A2 010 B2 1A.010
My spreadsheet is very large and I need to get this done without manually having to look at each.
I'm using Excel 2007. I want to write a formula that will list all characters in a string to the left of a "-". See below example. What formula would I use?.......
View 2 Replies View RelatedNeed a formula which will allow an error message to pop up in a cell if more than 16 Characters are entered into another cell?

I am looking for a formula that will remove any unwanted characters in a cell.
For example i may a word or string of words with "-" , " ' " or "," in them and i would like to have these removed.
I was hoping someone could help me out. I've been trying to put together a formula to find special characters with no luck.
Characters I’m looking for are:
I basically want to find and replace certain characters in a formula, but the formula is quite intricate so I will give some background to the problem first:
I have a complex spread sheet which is used to check if a data array matches another data array (both data arrays are different sizes). One array has a set of parameters for a variable and the other array has the variables and the actual values for each variable. I have a section with the following formulas to check if the actual value (C121&D121) matches the parameters ($A$9:$A$108, $B$9:$B$108) & ($C$9:$C$108, $D$9:$D$108)
I have the following formula in cell AB121:
=(C121=INDEX($B$9:$B$108,ROW(101:101)-INT(ROW(100:100)/$D$1)*$D$1))
In cell AC121:
=(D121=INDEX($D$9:$D$108,ROW(101:101)-INT(ROW(100:100)/$D$1)*$D$1))
And have similar formulas from AD121 to AY121. I mention this to point out that excel regards this as an inconsistent formula, I haven't copied and pasted it over, I have had to re-enter it in each cell adjusting the parameter sections.
The problem I have is that currently this is set up to check through a data set and wrap around every 100 rows ('100' Entered in $D$1) but I want to adjust the formula when there is a different amount of rows to check. So basically the only way I can think to be able to do this is to have a formula or something in VBA (which I have very low level experience with) to be able to go into the formula and change certain characters within the formula. For example, if I wanted to check 95 rows instead of 100, it would need to have 95 in $D$1, which I enter in manually, but then how to go in and replace (101:101)-INT(ROW(100:100) with (96:96)-INT(ROW(95:95) in 2 sections in the 1 formula then do the same with the inconsistent formula from AC121:AY121?
Looking to create a Formula (not Code):
IF CELL A1
1. NOT Between 8 and 20 characters OR
2. NOT contain at least 2 numbers OR
3. NOT contain at least 2 letters OR
4. contain characters (e.g. punctuation) which are neither numbers or letters
Then FALSE.
