I am sure this isn't just a setting that can be enable in excel. I was wondering if there is a code that will allow the display of the number of characters in a cell when typing in it.
I know there is a len() function but I don't know how to use it so it displays my char length on the go.
We are moving to a new accounting system and we need to import the creditors' master data but there are field length limitations in the new system. I have the full details off our current system and I would like to highlight cells that fall outside of the character length.

Currently when I attempt to enter in an employee ID, my message box alert appears after the first digit. So instead of validating the user has entered in 8 characters for the employee ID, the msgbox alert appears as soon as the user enters in the first number. I cannot figure out what I am missing within my code.

To prevent double click entry into the same textbox I set the maximum length property at 3. However, setting the maximum length to 3 does not work. Subsequent commandbutton1 clicks will result in an infinite YES entries.
Is the maximum length property disabled when commandbutton entries are applied?
Is there a fomula that can add trailing spaces. For example....I need a certain feild to be 11 Characters in length. So lets say in Column A, I have a bunch of different words:

I am trying to create a document and i'm not sure if this is possible or not, but i'd like to type in a number in column A (1-10) and then in column B have a symbol appear corresponding to the number.
So if i type in 5 in Column A, Column B will have 5 squares pop up (or something along those lines), etc.
I have a worksheet in Excel 2007. I have "wrap text" turned on in column G and so long as the character count doesn't exceed 255 the text will wrap and display properly. However, when the number of characters in a cell of column G exceed 255 the display in the cell turns to all pound signs (#). The content of the cell is displayed in the URL line but it is all # in the cell. How can I fix this?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to avoid using merged cells or text wrapping with altered row height to display some text in multiple rows - similar to using centre across selection to have a header across multiple columns without merging. The guys that use the sheet type a comment that is relevant to five rows and the easy solution here would be to just type the first portion of the comment in the first row (about 30 characters will display in the column width available), then put the next 30 characters in the next row and so on but the guys keep getting lazy and merging the cells so they can type the comments more easily. I can lock the sheet or force validation but I think there's a better solution.
I can effectively "wrap" the text across the five rows the header is relevant to by using a formula to pick up everything except the first 30 characters of each cell. Ie if they type whatever they want in cell B16 then I can use this formula to break it in to 30 character lengths to "wrap" it in to the next four rows:
=IF(LEN(B17)>30,RIGHT(B17,(LEN(B17)-30)),""),
And I'm sure it would be easy enough to use search with the formula to break it where there is a space in the text so partial words don't flow over.
BUT because the text ends up slightly different widths I want to use formats to force only 30 characters to display (whilst keeping the remainder of the text string intact). I can't figure out the syntax to format only 30 text characters to display but you can easily do it with numbers and dates and so on.
I have to change a time sheet that was previously in HH:mm to display in decimals, but to the nearest 1/4 hour ( 0.25 (=15 mins), 0.50 (= 30 mins), 0.75 (=45 mins), and 1.00 (1 hour))
This is not a formula question, but a format/display question as the cells have to be typed in by different people who up until now have beeb used to typing in the HH:mm format.
This means;
8:15hrs would become 8.25
8:30hrs would become 8.5
8:45hrs would become 8.75
The reason behind the change is a head office wallah that needs to have time in decimals and not true minutes.
Is there a way to;
prevent user from entering any decimal other than .00; .25;.50;.75
or change formatting to turn red if any other than above is entered.
Alternatively, is there a way of me (the collator for 50 people) being able to take data from their sheets (which I have to do monthly) which could be a formula...
I have tried to get head office to change, but they say that they collate data for 13 other sites and all the others are OK (thats cos all the others receive their data on PAPER and one person tabluates them)...
I have a code which displays the values of R2, S2, T2, and U2 in one cell (J2). R2, S2 and U2 are all letters, but T2 is a 2 digit number. If there is a leading zero in T2, then in the display of J2, the leading zero is gone. so if the value of R2 is K, S2 is M, T2 is 01 and U2 is S, then I would want it to display KM01S, but it is only displaying KM1S.

In this workbook I have successfully made it act like a userform calculator, the user does not ever see the actual sheets in the workbook, their only interface is the Userform calculator I created.
This is exactly how I want it, they do not need to see the sheets, nor do I want them to.
This leads me only to my next problem... Some of the users obviously wont have Macros automatically enabled, what I am wondering is, is there a way to put the normal "Enable Macros" button which appears along the top of a macro containing workbook when opened, I want to put this button into a userform like display without showing the workbook at all.
So here the process I envision:
1. User double clicks the file
2. It opens and automatically goes invisable (like it does already)
3. If the user does not have macro enabled, a userform like box appears and says "Please enable Marcros to user" with a button below for "Enable" and "Exit"
4. If exit is pressed excel closes
5. If enabled is pressed Macros are enabled and then they will automatically see my calculator userform like normal.
As you see, at no point do I want them to see excel or a workbook, just userforms so its not like they are using excel at all.
I have searched around the net and found a few ideas to tackle this, mainly one that has a "Prompt" workbook that shows when macros are disabled, but that is not ideal for me. However perhaps I could just edit this "prompt" code thing for my situation?

My worksheet contains data with the reaction times on a psychological test. Each respondent in the test has 280 rows in my excel sheet.
The 'perfect' length of the row, is from A to M. When an error is made in the test, the length of the row will increase. So the error length can be A to AA.
For me it is important to analyse the error. So I would like to give a perfect row length, the value 1, and an error row length a value 2.
So, in conclusion:
If:
Cell length = A1 - M1? --> Copy A1 B1 C1 (A B Cof that row) to Sheet3, and give D1 in sheet 3 the value 1
Cell length >= A1 - M1? --> Copy A1 B1 C1 (A B C of that row) to Sheet3, and give D1 in sheet 3 the value 2
I received a request from a coworker regarding custom formatting some numbers in his spreadsheet. Those numbers are serial numbers of 20 characters long. Sometimes in my files I use this custom number formatting ###0 and its enough for the data I handle. But when I tried to use it in his spreadsheet, the following shows:

The cell must look like this: 08456891070060510302
The reason to have it like this is due to a Delivery Program requirement to deliver Set-top Units for repair. The Delivery Program do not recognize other format than the above. My coworker takes the data from a spreadsheet, and the spreadsheet needs a custom number format to display the correct number.

I have got a list of numeric abbreviations, for instance 10739011/21/31/41. What it should really display are the numbers 10739011, 10739021, 10739031 and 10739041 (the first six figures stay the same). All the numbers in my list are 8 figures long. I want to change the list from the list seperated by the backward slash to the complete numbers. I have uploaded an example of the list with backward slash between the numbers. Is there a way that Excel can automatically change these numbers to the full numbers?
Because all the numbers are 8 figures long, I thought the first 6 figures of the 1st number can be copied and those 6 figures pasted before the other two figures after the backslash. I'm trying to write a Macro that, in the active sheet (which contains plenty of data), deletes rows according to several criteria, for example:
- if cell(i, ar1(j)) = ERROR, delete row i and shift 1 up
(ar1 is an array of column numbers)
- if cell(i, ar3(j)) = 0, delete row i and shift 1 up
(ar3 is another array of column numbers)

I have attached the spreadsheet for reference. All other sheets pull information from the WHITE sheet.
I want the columns for unit price, discount and total to be set to two decimal places but I also don't want it to show anything if the field has a 0 value (so if i only have a few items I don't get lots of o's).
To get the field to not display a 0 if it is empty on the WHITE sheet I have been using "0;-0;;@" which I found on the net. If I use this then it negates the two decimal places.
This also includes the WHITE sheet.
As shown in the below image. I have some data from A13 to I 13. Currently if I put the cursor on A13 and press DELETE button then all the formatting from A13 to I13 goes off. But the data still remain there.
Is it possible then when I press DELETE the content of A13 then all the data from B13 to I13 should also get deleted ?
