Macro - Format Rows Based On Cell Contents
Aug 18, 2009
I have a spreadsheet that has a subtotal row after each data grouping. I need help with a macro that will go to column C, look for any cells with the word "Subtotals" in it, and format that row based on another macro I already have set up. I've tried about 50 different types of macros that I found out on the web, but none have worked.

Been racking brain, searching through the forum here, and my Excel 2003 Bible all day trying to figure out this problem to no avail. I would like to clear the contents of any cell in a given range if the cell immediately to the right of is formatted as bold.

Every week I get a report that contains 1 or more (sub) part numbers in each row down column E, separated by a space. I need each part on a separate line, with the rest of the data on that row intact. Because these are the sub-components of an overall part, the data in column E is stored grouped together like that.
I currently use text to columns to break those up, separating them by the space, add a count of those cells so I know how many sub part numbers there are, run a 'duplicate rows' macro on that count, then manually delete out numbers so I'm left with one part number per row. The report is already over 100 rows long, so after I run the 'duplicate rows' macro I have a lot of rows to work through.

I have merged two workbooks into one. What I need to do at this point is to delete all rows that have a duplicate entry, basically anytime the cell content in one cell matches the cell content in the cell right below or above it, BOTH rows should be deleted. At this point, this is above my VBA skills so I'm asking for help in how to do this. The stripped version of the workbook is attached (only 100 rows) but in reality this is a huge workbook with almost 22,000 rows.
You will notice in the attached workbook, that cell contents for A2 and A3 match. For what I need to do, I need both rows (2 and 3) to be deleted. If you go down a bit, starting in row 89 all the contents in column A are unique so those need to remain.

I'm am trying to set up a household finances dashboard in excel - What i'd like to do is categorise & tag HH expenditure based on part of the description within a bank statement, the desired result being:
account tagging.jpg
My ideal solution would be some kind of lookup with a table containing the keywords & corresponding tags to match part of the description to, as this will allow easy management of the tags, situations where I have multiple keywords for the same tage (supermakets for example), and so forth. Is this possible?
Currently I am using a very large nested forumula which i've cobbled together based on searching for ideas. It works, but managing new tags is difficult, part of the formula i'm using is:
=IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("00111888",'JOBSFPCUR-20140414'!C4)),"Pete transfer",(IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("LAURA",'JOBSFPCUR-20140414'!C4)),"Laura Pocket Money",(IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("TESCO",'JOBSFPCUR-20140414'!C4)),"Supermarket")))))

I have a large set of data regarding the activities going on in particular rooms. The data contains activity name, start time, day, duration, room and size.
I would like to select all rows that contain a cell in the activity name column which contain the words 'VideoConference'.
I have tried to Search, Select All then index the remaining data using =iferror(index(etc. However some activities occur in more than one room and all variables apart from 'Room' are the same. Thus when I have tried to index the room column I get the same room for both rows.
ps the raw data set consists of +28000 rows so I can not simply look through and copy.

Basically lets say I have in cell A1 to A10 floor access data i.e. Users who used their ID cards to access a room.
Now the data always starts with either Rejected or Admitted then the user's name and then the card number and the access floor etc. the card currently has.
What I am looking for is that the macro should first check if the cell has Rejected or Admitted written in it - this I can do myself using =Left(A1,8) which should give me the helper column I need.
Then based on this I want it to only copy the name of the individual i.e. it should look in the cell and only copy whatever is written between "Rejected" and "(Card". The cell data is something like this:
Rejected Doe, John (Card #123456) at ABC 123 Floor1/Floor2/Floor3/Floor4 Door 1 [In] [Clearance]

I am trying to create a macro that will open certain files based on the contents of a cell. There are three possible files that I will want to open.
File1.xlsx
File2.xlsx
File3.xlsx
If the contents of cell Q2 = 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 then open "File1.xlsx"
If the contents of cell Q2 = 60, 70 or 80 then open "File2.xlsx"
If the contents od cell Q2 = 90, 100, or 110 then open "File3.xlsx"
If the contents of Q2 do not equal any of the possibilities listed then I would like an error box to show with the option to end or debug the code.

Can a macro rename Excel files based on a cell's contents? The problem maybe that I download these files en masse from a website and they all have 54-character long randomly generated filenames which I can rename by selecting all and then use the rename function to get a series of filenames like a, a(2), a(3), ... but I would rather have the files renamed based on the text that exists in cell B1 which is the title of the report. I also read somewhere that this kind of macro only works if the tabs have names like "Sheet 1"

I am using Excel 2007
I am trying to conditionally format rows based on the first cell in each row. I had this working in a previous worksheet and have gone through several examples based on answers in other threads but do not for the life of me know what I am doing wrong. I am using the conditional formating rules on the ribbon menu.
I have a range A3-W100 pre-formatted with generic data and formulae. Column A has no data. I want the text to change color for that row if the cell in column A is populated. The background and text are set to black to appear unpopulated.
When an item number is entered in column A3, the text color in row 3 changes to white. I can get this to work on one row but if I extend it through the range, all rows change. I want them only to change if the respective A cell is populated.
I am using
Formula is =A3>""
Format is Yellow,
Applies to =$A$3:$V$100
Stop if True is unchecked
All I can get is column B to change color.

Code is trying to
1. Where there is data in column B
2. Goto first row of data
2. If column J = "Closed"
3. then select Cells from column B to J in that row and colour these cells in red
4. If column J= "Open"
5. the select Celss from column B to J in that row and colour these cells in grey
4. Repeat for next row until you get to cell in column B where there is no data.

Sub Colourclosed()
Sheets("Risks").Select
Dim LastRow As Long
Dim i As Long
LastRow = Range("B" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row
For i = 8 To LastRow
If Range("J" & i).Value = "Closed" Then Range("B", "J" & i).Select
Selection.Interior.ColorIndex = 3
[code].....
Note: I've managed to do it for one cell ie for Column B by replacing "If Range("J" & i).Value = "Closed" Then Range("B", "J" & i).Select with "If Range("J" & i).Value = "Closed" Then Range("B" & i).Select" This works but only colours in cell in column B, how do i do this so it colours range of cells

I thought this was a pretty simple formula but I am having difficulty creating it. I am attaching a little test spreadsheet. Sheet 1 is where the data will be entered. The Reimbursed column has a drop down choice of yes or no. The next 2 columns are the cost of registration and the cost of accommodations. On sheet 2 is where I would like the formulas. So in cell A4 I would like a formula that says if B3 on sheet 1 is Yes populate this cell with the contents of Cell C3 only, B4 of sheet 2 would then be B3 if A3 on sheet 3 is Yes and so on with the Not reinbursed if sheet 1 the Reimbursed column is no.

I have a list of cells that has two values concatenated. The first I would like to round to 2 decimal places, and the second is always a integer
Consider this formula..
Code:
=IF(SUMIFS('Analysis Data'!$I$5:$I$1840,'Analysis Data'!$C$5:$C$1840,3,'Analysis Data'!$E$5:$E$1840,1)=0,0,SUMIFS('Analysis Data'!$I$5:$I$1840,'Analysis Data'!$C$5:$C$1840,3,'Analysis Data'!$E$5:$E$1840,1)/COUNTIFS('Analysis Data'!$C$5:$C$1840,3,'Analysis Data'!$E$5:$E$1840,1,'Analysis Data'!$I$5:$I$1840,">0"))
&"("&COUNTIFS('Analysis Data'!$C$5:$C$1840,3,'Analysis Data'!$E$5:$E$1840,1,'Analysis Data'!$I$5:$I$1840,">0")&")"
In one cell this yields the value;
2.42553191489362(47)
In another it yields 2.975(40)
and so on..
I would like to format it to display as 2.43(47) and 2.98(40)
FWIW this means average of 2.43 games refereed per session in 47 sessions of refereeing.

I have a spreadsheet where if Cell A2 says "Deposit", Rows A2-E2 would be formatted with a Blue background.
I've tried conditional formatting, but I can't built it into a Macro (I can't make it run), and it only highlights the cell that has that value. I also tried having the spreadsheet filter down to only the values I want highlighted, then highlighting all cells and un-filtering the column- this didn't work either.
It would basically say :
If (any cell in Row A) has text = "Deposit" (it needs to be exact, it can't be "containing"), set cell with the word "Deposit" and 4 cells to the right as Blue (I'm not picky about the color).

I want a macro to hid rows based on a specific value of a cell compared to another.
Example, In a cell I have the current date and time which updates when the the sheet is opened... On a row I have various info including another date in the past. When the date in the past goes over 6 months older than the current date, I want to hide that whole row.
Is this possible? Do I use an IF function in the macro I've seen to remove rows based on cells with specific values?

I have a list in Excel, and it has the company in one column, and it's information in the next x rows until there is a blank row (4-7 rows). I get that you can copy the rows under the Company, transpose next to the company, and then delete the contents of the cells that you just took the data from, but I have 6200 rows do to this to, for 500+ companies. I tried recording a macro for two entries, and this is what I have (see below), but how do I modify this so that I don't need to type in every single range, and it will do it to the whole column? The data is in column A, I am posting in column B.
Basics for Macro Requirement:
1. Find the blank cell in row A
2. Skip the next cell/row (this is the company)
3. Select all the cells beneath the company cell, until it reaches the blank cell underneath
4. Copy, transpose these cells next to the Company cell (transpose in column B)
5. Delete the contents in row A that were just transposed
6. Find the next cell with data (company)
7. Repeat Steps 2-6
My recorded Macro:
Sub Macro2()
'
' Macro2 Macro
'
' Keyboard Shortcut: Ctrl+q
'
Range("A3:A8").Select
[code]....

I'm trying to split the contents of a cell to a new row (with data from other columns on the row copying across) below the originating cells row. Most of the split cell macro posts I've seen split the contents to a new row at the bottom of a range, however I'm looking to split the contents to a new row directly beneath the original row where data will already exist. I don't want to copy over this data I just want to push the data down depending on the number of rows created.
The contents in the cell being split can vary (1:n), so the number of rows needed to be inserted depends on the count. The majority of the contents in the cell is separated by a line feed (Alt Enter) but some may be separated by a tab or comma.
Essentially what I'm trying to achieve is something from this
A
B
C
D

I have data in Col A. and i want to split (50 characters) in each row.
I know the formula but dragging formula to following rows is not working.
I have to write the formula manually. I write in b1 B2 and B3 as follows.
I want following
=MID(A1,1,50)
=MID(B1,251,50)
=MID(C1,501,50)
When i drag down the formula to bottom rows it repeat
Desire Formula in COL B
aaa asdf 242424 alkjsaf 32234 asfasf 23234 dfdfdfd
=MID(A1,1,50)
aaa asdf 242424 alkjsaf 32234 asfasf 23234 dfdfdfd
=MID(B2,251,50)
[code]....
I want to copy down the formula to 10k rows. When i select b2 and b3 and drag down i get following results.
aaa asdf 242424 alkjsaf 32234 asfasf 23234 dfdfdfd
=MID(A1,1,50)
aaa asdf 242424 alkjsaf 32234 asfasf 23234 dfdfdfd

I have a spreadsheet with a serial number is row 1 in column A with the rest of Row 1 empty. Column A is empty in Row 2, but has the data associated with the row above in columns B through L of Row 2. Then comes 2 blank rows and the pattern repeats with a new serial number in column A of row 5 and so on. I would like to move the serial number down one row, delete the now empty first row, delete the following 2 empty rows, and then loop to do the same thing again for all 9000 rows of the spreadsheet.

I want to have a cell that looks at another cell based on a number that is in another cell. So imagine if you will: A1 contains the number 25. A2 contains the formula I can't work out. I want it to look at the row that is the number contained in cell A1, so in this case it would look at row 25.
Now I want to narrow it down further to a cell in that row but this will be a constant so lets say column F. So if A1=25 then A2 would display what ever is in F25. If cell A1 were 16 it would display the contents of F16 etc. The best I got was something like =IF(A1=>1,(F(A1))) but obviously that is wrong as it doesn't work.

I am new to VBA programming so i might be making a obvious mistake. I am trying to create a macro that will insert rows depending on a cell value. I also need this to be executed from a command button rather then to occur immediately after the cell value is entered. So as a example
Lets say
Cell A2 has a value 20
Cell A3 has a value 3
Cell A4 has a value 5
when this data is entered and then a Command button poressed there should be
20 rows beneath cell A2
3 rows beneath cell A3
5 rows beneath cell A4
