I have a software application that imports audio files and writes information about these files to text files. I'm trying to write and Excel/VBA application that will parse and import the data contained in these files. find a sample of one of these files attached. The big hurdle I am facing is I cannot figure out how to parse this file - the delimiter keeps changing as throughout the file (see example below):
otrk ´ptrk ¬
otrk Îptrk Æ
otrk Ôptrk Ì
otrk âptrk Ú
otrk *ptrk "
otrk Øptrk Ð
otrk þptrk ö
otrk ´ptrk ¬

otrk Ðptrk È
otrk Þptrk Ö
otrk þptrk ö

otrk îptrk æ

I have a text file with no discernable format ( can't import into excel) that is too large to put all the data into an excel worksheet. This file is made to print out on a network printer.
I don't need all the info in the file, I would like to specify a variable, search the text file for the variable, then specify the amount of rows down to look for the data value and input the result into an excel spreadsheet.

I have an existing spreadsheet with a column of strings (actually VIN numbers). These numbers correllate to a bunch of text files, that can exist in one of three folders (UsernameDesktop1, 2, or 3) on my desktop. What I need the macro to do is:
1) get the filename from A2 (A1 is a heading row)
2) Find the appropriate text file in one of the three folders
3) Put the folder name into I2
4) Scan the text file for some strings, and copy some data that follows those strings into J2:O2 (I can handle programming this)
5) Close the text file
6) repeat above for the remainder of filenames (about 1800 files)

I've encountered a bit of an odd one. I am opening a tab delimited file, which has been sved as an xls. When I open from file manager, it opens correctly. When I open from Excel, I have to go through 3 screen dictating how the data is set up, and the end result is that a couple of the numbers come through as text, rather than numbers.
Failing an explanation - how do you open workbooks as file system objects - currently I am opening them using
Workbooks.Open Filename:=wb.Path & "/" & ws. Range("B1").Value
If I open them by mimicking the FM, perhaps it will work OK.

I do routine tasks every day which involves opening 3 different files and pasting data into my main file. The data is always in the same format, and the 3 files are saved in the same location (3 different folders through). The 3 files are saved each day and the naming convention is constant, with only the date changing. For example, the files are always saved in C:My Documents and the files are called test_05.02.2013.xls. Tomorrow the file will be called test_06.02.2013.xls and so on.
So each day I will be rolling a file forward and I want to bring in the info from each of these files based on the new day.
How to do 1, and I will do the others (because the concept will be the same).

When it opens the desired file, it increments the file name by 1 each time it is opened (via the macro).
Example;
The first time it is opened you see the file name in the header read "P'Binder L&T Pages" for a moment, then it changes to "P'Binder L&T Pages1"...
I close the file and open it again (via the macro), and see the file name in the header read "P'Binder L&T Pages" for a moment, then it changes to "P'Binder L&T Pages2"...
The file name continues to increment on every opening until the PC is rebooted, then it starts at 1 again.

Dim AlreadyOpen As Boolean

I have a file with multiple tabs of data...lot's of data (each tab has 80,000+ lines and 23 columns...3 are formulas, the rest is imported data). I've brought Excel to it's knees (i.e. crashes). Yes, I'm using 2007.
What I'm trying to do is extract 6 cells of data from every 10th line and write it out to a CSV file with two more pieces of information (same for each line).
What I was doing was creating a separate worksheet for each one to be extracted, parsing out the data, and then copying that data to yet another workbook that was then saved as a CSV.
First, in retrospect, that was a waste of time. Second, the addition of the extra worksheets to do the parsing was crashing Excel due to the extreme size of the workbook.
What I'd like to do is use a macro to do all of this in one swell foop:
1) Prompt me for a file name (or I can put the desired name in a cell and read it from there if that simplifies the code)
2) Open a new text file with that name and ".csv" extension in the same folder as the original workbook
3) Write out the column headers: (Fix, Satellites, Lat, Lon, alt (ft), Date, utc_t, course)
4) Step through each row, looking at the text contents of column B (looks like 22:50:07.100)...if it ends in ".000" do the following:
4a) write "PPS,4," to the open text file
4b) write the cell contents from columns "V", "W", "J", "C", "B", and "L" to the text file in the exact format they appear in the text cell.
The output file should look like (very short example):
Fix,Satellites,Lat,Lon,alt (ft),Date,utc_t,course
PPS,4,30.543203,-86.323328,1419.04,2009/12/17,23:26:22.000,243.95

I am working on modifying this code (below) that I found here: VB Macro to search webpage for text string
Code:
Option Explicit
Public stResultstr As String
Sub SearchForString()
Dim rngURL As Range
Dim cll As Range
Dim stCheck As String
Dim xmlHttp As Object
[Code]...
So right now I have the script prompt you for a URL range, then it asks you for what you want to search for, and I have it set to return the next 10 characters from that found point.
You can see here:
Code:
If InStr(1, stResult, stCheck, vbBinaryCompare) > intt Then
intt = InStr(1, stResult, stCheck, vbBinaryCompare) + Len(stCheck)
I began to create something to identify the last position of the found item because next I want to loop it to find the next occurance of the same thing and return the next 10 characters after it in the next cell to the right in that same row:
Code:
cll.Offset(, 1).Value = stResultstr
Again, what I want to do here is find and parse out every occurence of a string (inputbox) found on a web page url in column A. The parse occurrences will go to the right in cells C though ? for row N.

I have a large text file (greater than 64k lines) which I need to import into excel. I only need anything imported from the text file that is for dates I specify. So I would like to run a line by line query and only import the lines I need.
The dates are always in position 43-50 (dd-mm-yy) in the text file itself, so the code would have to look at that section, see if the date is within the range specified and only import if it is (and then move onto the next line).

I work for a company that has about 650 locations. Each location has a location manager that is responsible for submitting a Performance Review spreadsheet for all the employees at their location.
Currently I have an Excel file that has all employees/locations. One of the columns on my spreadsheet is "Location ID"...which is literately a number we've assigned to our Locations. I have an Excel template saved that I'd like each Location to open into.
Can someone help me? I need each location to be it's own spreadesheet...which I have a template created already. I'd prefer to find an automated way to do this...rather than manually creating 650 spreadsheets.
I'd prefer to do this in anoter application, such as MS Access, but senior management already made the decision this will be done in Excel...so I'm stuck with what I got.

I have a folder that has a bunch of text files in it with numeric names (they are store numbers 2, 3, 165, 188, etc...). I need to open those files (in excel), run a macro on them (this portion of the macro has already been created), and then save them with the same name as the txt file but in an xls format and close. It would be great to have the whole folder process automatically but I am willing to start small. Further, I'd like it to not ask for a filename, and I don't want to see the SaveAs dialog box. So far I have been able to get the macro to run through the my processing of the text file all the way to the SaveAs portion, but the code in my macro opens the SaveAs box and puts the filename of the txt file in the file name box in quotes with the txt extension. Below is the code.
Sub Macro3()
sFile = Application. GetOpenFilename( _
fileFilter:="Text Files (*.txt), *.txt", FilterIndex:=1, _
Title:="Open Workbook")
Workbooks.OpenText Filename:= _
sFile, Origin:= _

I receive a flat text file every week which I would like to grab with excel and extract only the data I need and enter the data into separate cells and loop until I reach the end of the flat file. I got a subroutine written that allows me to open my text file and it will enter all the data however I need to know how to parse only the stuff I need and enter it into the right cells and loop until I reach the end of my text file. Here is what I have so far:
Sub testFSNew()
Dim fs As Object ' scripting.filesystemobject
Dim txtIn As Object ' scripting.textstream
Dim strFile As String 'File Name
Dim strLine As String 'Current line being read.
[code].....
Now so far this opens the text file and dumps all the data into an excel spreadsheet however when I say all I mean it dumps everything into the first cell and does not separate it, the following is an example of the text in the flat file. I will only put in the first 5 rows because their is 5000 rows in the real file.

Ok so the first problem is I don't need the first line it's a header line and if you will notice everyline of the file ends with either a 5 or a 4 but it is information about each employee, so the next line would end in a 5 and that would be the beginning of the next employee.
P.S. I noticed in the preview post that this message board truncated my flat file data, so keep in mind that each line is indeed 1 line ending in either 5 or a 4

I'm worried that if I move this folder to another location then my open file button will not work since location is changed.
