Open Text File Into Excel Template
Jan 10, 2010
I work for a company that has about 650 locations. Each location has a location manager that is responsible for submitting a Performance Review spreadsheet for all the employees at their location.
Currently I have an Excel file that has all employees/locations. One of the columns on my spreadsheet is "Location ID"...which is literately a number we've assigned to our Locations. I have an Excel template saved that I'd like each Location to open into.
Can someone help me? I need each location to be it's own spreadesheet...which I have a template created already. I'd prefer to find an automated way to do this...rather than manually creating 650 spreadsheets.
I'd prefer to do this in anoter application, such as MS Access, but senior management already made the decision this will be done in Excel...so I'm stuck with what I got.

I have used the directions below (from this site) to add a name to a validated cell and have that name added to a list. The issue I am trying to solve is this, when opening a new file from the template containing the code below the new file needs to have the range to which I'm refering updated to the range that was in the last opened file from the template. I tried by using a macro to copy and paste the range to an external wb that was hidden and then copy and paste to the new file opened from the template but it was a mess.
If anyone can help by posting some example code to steer me in the right direction I would be very grateful
1. Add any list of names or items to the range A1:A10 on any sheet.
2.Now in cell A11 enter this formula and copy it down to say row 20. =IF( COUNTIF($A$1:A10,$D$1),"x",$D$1) Note the relative reference of A10
3.Go to Insert>Name-define and in the Names in workbook: box type:MyName
4.In the Refers to: box enter this formula: =OFFSET(Sheet1!$A$1,0,0,COUNTIF(Sheet1!$A:$A,"<>x"),1)
5.Click Add then Ok.
6. Select Cell D1 and go to Data> Validation, select List from the Allow: box and in the Source: box type: =MyNames Ensure the In-cell dropdown box is checked.
7.Click the Error Alert page tab and uncheck the Show error alert after invalid data is entered box. Now click Ok.
8.Right click on the sheet name tab and select View Code in here paste the code below:
Private Sub Worksheet_Calculate()
On Error Resume Next
Application.EnableEvents = False
Range("MyNames") = Range("MyNames").Value
Application.EnableEvents = True
On Error Goto 0
End Sub
9.Click the top right X to get back to Excel and now Save.
Now select cell D1 and type in any name, that is NOT part of the list, and Enter. Select D1 again and look at the list. The new name should now be part of it!

I have a template file for ordering trafolyte and steel plates. I have added macros to this template file. The existing macros do the following (shortly described):
Macro 1: clears order
Macro 2: update order date + send a read only file to the supplier of plates + save a read only copy of the file into one of three folders acc to info in one of the cells.
It's the Macro 2 I want to edit.
I want to add a "function" which copy a selection of data.column A to N from row 12 to 548 but only the rows where there is a value in column A.
Row 1 to 11 includes standard order info and Macro buttons.
Row 11 includes the heading for order data.
For everytime someone click on the Macro 2 button in the template file, I want the selection to be paste into the first "available" row in a "Total list" file.
The "Total list" file may have to be open (or a function to open, paste selection and then close the "Total list" file may be added)
File and Folder info:
To simplify suggestions, the following file and path info can be used (I can change to the correct later):
Template file name: template_order.xlsm
Template file location: \servershared emplate
Total list file name: total_list.xlsx
Total list file location: \servershared otal
Selection info:
The template file exists of a "general order info area" A1:N10
The column heading for order data is located at A11:N11
The selection to be copied is A12:N550 - But only rows where column A includes data (not empty).
(If the spesific order consists of 14 plates than there will be item no 1-14 in column A and I then I want to copy A12:N25 (row 25 will be item 14).
When I try to use record macro it looks like it only records what's happening in the template file - It doesn't record the pasting in the total list.

I have some daily text files in a folder (so about 30 of them each month), which in the end of month, I need to open them up in excel, format them so that I can use the information for my analysis.
I would like to create a macro, to quickly open them all up at once and save them each individually in .xls or .xlsm format.
I am new to VBA and after some research online, I was able to have the files open with the following code. but now I don't know how to proceed further to save them one by one with the same name but in .xls or .xlsm format.
Sub Opentxtfiles()
Dim MyFolder As String
Dim myfile As String
[Code].....

I've attached 2 test files, one is the database master file containing the projects (each row represents a project, unique reference number in column A) and the other is the blank template file i'm hoping to export data into and then save down with the naming convention "column A_column B.xlsx"
Kept the test files simple but would need to modify any code to apply to much larger database consisting of many more fields etc.
Master.xlsx
Template.xlsx

Is there a way to open a text file from Excel 2010 and specify that I want it in .xls format?
I am working in compatibility mode, and expected that when I opened a text file from code within an xls file, the text file would have 65,536 rows, but it has 1,048,576. This causes a problem when we try to copy the sheet with the data from the text file, and insert the sheet into our xls workbook. See code below. The error is: Run-time error '1004': Excel cannot insert the sheets into the destination workbook, because it contains fewer rows and columns than the source workbook..
I know I can get the data other ways (such as copying and pasting only the cells containing data) but I was hoping to make minimal changes to the code below as I will have to make it across several templates. Specifically, I was hoping that there was a qualifier I could add to the Workbooks.OpenText statement after "Tab:=True" - Perhaps something about opening the text file in File Format 56. However I have not been able to find out how to do that.
Code:
.....FileToOpen = Application.GetOpenFilename("All Files (*.*),*.*,GeoTAC Files (*.ctf),*.ctf, _
Text Files (*.txt),*.txt,Excel Files (*.xls),*.xls", 1, , , False)
Workbooks.OpenText Filename:=FileToOpen, _
[Code].....

I have an existing spreadsheet with a column of strings (actually VIN numbers). These numbers correllate to a bunch of text files, that can exist in one of three folders (UsernameDesktop1, 2, or 3) on my desktop. What I need the macro to do is:
1) get the filename from A2 (A1 is a heading row)
2) Find the appropriate text file in one of the three folders
3) Put the folder name into I2
4) Scan the text file for some strings, and copy some data that follows those strings into J2:O2 (I can handle programming this)
5) Close the text file
6) repeat above for the remainder of filenames (about 1800 files)

I have a template excel file that is loaded with macros. When the file is opened, a userform opens and the user makes several different selections. Based on the selections, the excel file is populated with information and pictures. I want to make sure that the user does not accidentally save over the template file when he/she is finished with the document.
My original solution was: when the user opened the excel file, it would automatically save under a different name in a temporary location. This would stop the user from being able to overwrite the source file. The users were not happy because the excel file is very large and takes a long time to save.
on another method to stop the user from overwriting the source file? using code? or another method?

I've encountered a bit of an odd one. I am opening a tab delimited file, which has been sved as an xls. When I open from file manager, it opens correctly. When I open from Excel, I have to go through 3 screen dictating how the data is set up, and the end result is that a couple of the numbers come through as text, rather than numbers.
Failing an explanation - how do you open workbooks as file system objects - currently I am opening them using
Workbooks.Open Filename:=wb.Path & "/" & ws. Range("B1").Value
If I open them by mimicking the FM, perhaps it will work OK.

I need to open an excel file based on a date mentioned in the file name, but minus 1 day. The file name is composed with Statistics_date_time.xls
Example: statistics_20140423_142754.xls
Once I need to open the file (only in the mornings), it has to be the one from the previous day to see the yesterdays performance. How can I create a macro that will look at the date in the file and take the one from yesterday?
This will be a part of a macro I'm making. The rest of the macro will just format the file and combine a few ones from different departments.

I Have a number(30+) of excel files based off of one template. I have since updated the template, thus making the the old ones obsolete. Is there a way to update the older files to use the new template without having to copy and paste the addition's row by row column by column?
None of the additions to the template will change the placement of existing data, nor will it change the data itself. It will however add Values to cells that were previously empty.
Hints, Tricks, or Ideas?

do a code to open a closed .txt file. Once opened, the data inside of it should be copied on the macro workbook sheet 2 column F. I want the macro to perform a loop until all the .txt files have been opened and copied on the specified sheet and column. No worries I will still include some codes in between .txt files so no overwrite will happen. By the way I want to open the .txt file in sequence base on the file name listed in sheet1 column B2 onwards.
see below list
File Name
1.txt
2.txt
3.txt
4.txt
5.txt
6.txt
7.txt
8.txt
9.txt
10.txt
11.txt
12.txt
So the first .txt file to be open is 1.txt followed by 2.txt and so on it will loop until all filenames have been opened and copied. Path of the file will be in C:SAMPLE

I have a large text file (greater than 64k lines) which I need to import into excel. I only need anything imported from the text file that is for dates I specify. So I would like to run a line by line query and only import the lines I need.
The dates are always in position 43-50 (dd-mm-yy) in the text file itself, so the code would have to look at that section, see if the date is within the range specified and only import if it is (and then move onto the next line).

I have a folder that has a bunch of text files in it with numeric names (they are store numbers 2, 3, 165, 188, etc...). I need to open those files (in excel), run a macro on them (this portion of the macro has already been created), and then save them with the same name as the txt file but in an xls format and close. It would be great to have the whole folder process automatically but I am willing to start small. Further, I'd like it to not ask for a filename, and I don't want to see the SaveAs dialog box. So far I have been able to get the macro to run through the my processing of the text file all the way to the SaveAs portion, but the code in my macro opens the SaveAs box and puts the filename of the txt file in the file name box in quotes with the txt extension. Below is the code.
Sub Macro3()
sFile = Application. GetOpenFilename( _
fileFilter:="Text Files (*.txt), *.txt", FilterIndex:=1, _
Title:="Open Workbook")
Workbooks.OpenText Filename:= _
sFile, Origin:= _

1), Array(5, 1), Array(26, 1), Array(35, 1), Array(39, 1), Array(46, 1), Array(51, 1), Array _
(58, 1), Array(75, 1), Array(87, 1), Array(91, 1), Array(97, 1), Array(99, 1), Array(111, 1) _.....................

I have a excel file that opens and will automatically run a bunch of tasks if a certain user opens it. This user is only used to automatically run this excel file, other users need to open the file occasionally to edit emails address, add clients etc stuff like that, that the automation part of it works off.
Currently I have this user running the file every hour using Win7 Task Scheduler. This is working well, except for the time when another user is editing the file on the hour and of course the Automated user gets the "this file is open blah blah blah, open as read only, cancel etc" popup, this stalls everything, and if I dont notice it, it could sit like this for days.
The file runs in Read Only fine, so... Basically my question is, how to open this file as "Read Only" using Task Scheduler? As if it just ran as Read Only all the time then it wouldnt matter what other users were editing at any given time.
One of my ideas was to have Task Scheduler run a VBS script instead of running the Excel file directly, and having the VBS script simply load the Excel as Read Only.

I was able to open and read this file before installing Windows 8.
The background to this is that after installing Windows 8 and reinstalling Windows University 2010 my word documents and excel files where all opening up as word pad documents. I figured out the solution to the above on my own and I am now able to properly read the excel and word documents that I tested. But I am not able to read a very important excel file. It is very important that I restore somehow this file.
When I open the excel file a dialogue box open up saying "Excel found unreadable content in "Account.xlsx". Do you want to recover the content of this workbook? When I choose Yes the following dialogue box opens up saying "Excel cannot open the file "Account.xlsx" because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the extension matches the format of the file".
The file extension is set to xlsx however how do I test to see if it is corrupt. Is there anything I can do to restore this excel workbook?
