Excel 2010 :: Import Text Files To Include File Name As Data?

Jul 12, 2012

I need to import thousand of txt files into 1 worksheet keeping the file names as data. Each txt file has 2 columns :

1 0.65914
2 0.65945
3 0.86062
... ...
and each txt file represents recordings made at specific time and date (e.g 0158.DSG_RAWD_HMS_21_ 0_ 0__DMY_29_ 2_12_pulses). I would like to have 2 columns: 1) with the time taken from the name of the txt file (e.g. 21:00:00) and 2) the associated recording. Something like this:

21:00:00 0.65914
21:00:00 0.65945
21:00:00 0.86062

and so on for each txt file and all the recordings piling up in 1 spreadsheet. I have tried to run few codes in VBA, but I have no knowledge of it and none of the code worked. I am using Excel 2010.

Import Text File Into File Where Rows Exceed Excel Row Limit

Jun 3, 2009

I have a workbook with many spreadsheet named Sheet1, Sheet2 and so on. Each sheet is filled completely upto 65536 rows. This data is being picked up from a CSV file. In this file there are sites with each site there is a assciated set of data. What happens is the data that extracts data does not differntiate between sites and when it reaches to the end of worksheet it splits the data into next sheet. So I am trying to create a macro to check each spreadsheet starting with the last sheet in the work book for example last sheet in the workbook is seven it should go to sheet6 and if there is a blank row after row 64000 it should cut all the rows and move them to sheet7. Then it should goto sheet5 and do the same and keep on doing it until it reaches sheet1.

Format Text File For Excel To Import Into Access

Jan 12, 2010

I have a large text file that is generated daily and want to import into MS Access as the end result.

First I need to reformat into the row format in excel rather than the format it is in. The issue is not all the segments are the same number of lines or they may have mutli message lines. The names with colon : after them I want to be field names in the table which I wish the text file to import into. Please, I am looking for assistance with this.

I have attached sample data of the text dump, and the name of the file is as you see but different date on the end. At the very end of the text file you will see the desired output which I will then import into Access

Also every new message begins with the dotted line and the date and time at the end.

Import Text Files To A Sheet In Existing Excel File

Jul 25, 2014

I have a folder with multiple text files. I want to import one of these files to a sheet called data in an existing Excel file. The excel file has references to this data sheet on other sheets which I want to keep. I want to save this excel file with the name the text file has and repeat this for all the text files in the folder.

I found a macro a while back which does the job nicely of importing and saving the Excel file, however all the data in the other sheets gets lost once it is saved. How to keep the data?

Code:

Sub tgr()
Const txtFldrPath As String = "FOLDER WITH TEXT FILES" 'Change to folder path containing text files
Const xlsFldrPath As String = "FOLDER FOR EXCEL FILES" 'Change to folder path excel files will be saved to
Dim CurrentFile As String: CurrentFile = Dir(txtFldrPath & "" & "*.txt")
Dim strLine() As String
Dim LineIndex As Long

Macro To Import Data From Text File

Jun 11, 2014

I've never actually had a reason or need to use macros for data import or manipulation. At the moment I'm trying to work on a modeling problem which will output the data in the form of a large text file. The data is divided up using 1000 energy bins, and 1000 timing bins for each tally (unique set of output data) like in this file [URL].....Unfortunately because of the applications for the data I can't reduce the number of bins, and the software being used for the modeling will not provide a more convenient form for the output file.

How to create a macro that can extract this data from the output file and import it into a designated excel spreadsheet. It would be preferable to import each set of tally data from the initial output file into it's own spreadsheet, but as I said I have no experience using macros and I'm not even sure where to begin in making something that would work. or even a basic source for examples

Locate CSV File With Open File Msgbox And Import Columns From CSV To Worksheet

Actually i've downloaded Tracking report of my SPO and this report is on 4-5 csv files (1 file per week). I have to gather data from these 4 files into one Worksheet. I have to do this with command button on my worksheet; with Open file dialogue box (i want to locate the csv files).

CSV files are something like that (I need only first 4 columns):

ABCDE1Name MSISDN Date Location MapLink 2M. Younus Safi "923***550577" "2011-10-07 20:36:18" "ACB Tower Badragah Chakwal. Badraga" "http://asdf.com" 3M. and my Worksheet is like that (With a command Button):

I want to import first 3 columns of csv file on first 3 columns on my worksheet; leave 2 columns blank and then import the 4th column... now for example i have done importing data from 1st csv file and the data is on 50 rows.. i click the command button again, locate the 2nd csv file.. do the same thing (import 1st 3 columns, 2 blank, then 4th) --from 51st Row-- and so on...

Excel 2013 :: Cannot Import Data Into ASP File

Feb 5, 2014

I am using Excel 2013, and I am following the example here: VBScript Scripting Techniques: Read Excel files without using Excel that reads in Excel data as an ADO record set to a classic ASP file using VBScript. I am not able to import all the Excel data successfully, and I need to know what I'm doing wrong. Note that in all these samples cell A1 is the heading text "Column1" and the main data starts on cell A2 (consistent with the example code).

When my source Excel data looks like the following:

Code:
Column1
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
X
9
10

It imports everything OK. However, if I move the X to the next row:

Code:
Column1
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
X
10
...the "X" cell gets imported as an empty string. So the imported array looks like this:

Code:
arrSheet[0][0]: Column1
arrSheet[1][0]: 1
arrSheet[2][0]: 2
arrSheet[3][0]: 3

[Code] ....

But if I add another X to an earlier row in the source worksheet, like so:

Code:
Column1
1
2
3
4
5
X
7
8
X
10
...this gets imported OK.

Open Text File Into Excel Template

Jan 10, 2010

I work for a company that has about 650 locations. Each location has a location manager that is responsible for submitting a Performance Review spreadsheet for all the employees at their location.

Currently I have an Excel file that has all employees/locations. One of the columns on my spreadsheet is "Location ID"...which is literately a number we've assigned to our Locations. I have an Excel template saved that I'd like each Location to open into.

Can someone help me? I need each location to be it's own spreadesheet...which I have a template created already. I'd prefer to find an automated way to do this...rather than manually creating 650 spreadsheets.

I'd prefer to do this in anoter application, such as MS Access, but senior management already made the decision this will be done in Excel...so I'm stuck with what I got.

Text File Import Produces Unwanted Blank Lines Between Rows Of Data

Jan 19, 2010

After doing some searching I found a macro here which imports multiple text files into one workbook, keeping each text file as a seperate worksheet, each worksheet named the same as the original file name (minus the .txt extension).

However, it adds a blank line between each line of text. So I get this:

Pinging 172.27.133.29 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 172.27.133.29: bytes=32 time=232ms TTL=62

Reply from 172.27.133.29: bytes=32 time=62ms TTL=62

Reply from 172.27.133.29: bytes=32 time=65ms TTL=62

instead of this:........

Pinging 172.27.133.29 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 172.27.133.29: bytes=32 time=232ms TTL=62
Reply from 172.27.133.29: bytes=32 time=62ms TTL=62
Reply from 172.27.133.29: bytes=32 time=65ms TTL=62

This doesn't happen when I use the import wizard, or when I just open the file from the File -> Open menu.

My text files are always the same format (number of lines, etc.), so it's easy to delimit and insert forumlae as needed, but those extra lines are breaking a macro I've previously written to parse the data.

Excel 2010 :: Open Text Files In 65536 Row File Instead Of 1048576?

Apr 22, 2013

Is there a way to open a text file from Excel 2010 and specify that I want it in .xls format?

I am working in compatibility mode, and expected that when I opened a text file from code within an xls file, the text file would have 65,536 rows, but it has 1,048,576. This causes a problem when we try to copy the sheet with the data from the text file, and insert the sheet into our xls workbook. See code below. The error is: Run-time error '1004': Excel cannot insert the sheets into the destination workbook, because it contains fewer rows and columns than the source workbook..

I know I can get the data other ways (such as copying and pasting only the cells containing data) but I was hoping to make minimal changes to the code below as I will have to make it across several templates. Specifically, I was hoping that there was a qualifier I could add to the Workbooks.OpenText statement after "Tab:=True" - Perhaps something about opening the text file in File Format 56. However I have not been able to find out how to do that.

Code:
.....FileToOpen = Application.GetOpenFilename("All Files (*.*),*.*,GeoTAC Files (*.ctf),*.ctf, _
Text Files (*.txt),*.txt,Excel Files (*.xls),*.xls", 1, , , False)
Workbooks.OpenText Filename:=FileToOpen, _

Import Large Text File Of Numbers Without Excel Splitting Numbers?

Jul 19, 2014

I have a text file with rows and columns of numbers ranging from 1-4 digits that I'd like to import/copy into Excel with each number being in its own cell. But whenever I copy/try to import, Excel splits all of the 3-4 digit numbers up into single digit numbers. The text file has 10,000+ columns (each number occupies two columns so I have half of that amount in numbers) and 300+ lines.

Is the file simply too large for Excel to handle or is there a way I can do this?

Read And Import Multiple Text Files Into Excel And Parse Data?

Mar 27, 2014

I am trying to determine a way to quickly import data from text files into Excel and place data in suitable columns (under correct headings). I am thinking I could be asked which file to read and import doing them 1 by 1, or if there is an automated way to cycle through all the files that would be more efficient (filenames are variable).

From the text files I have attached I can tell the column headers and what data should go under each. Not sure how you would describe the delimiting on these files? Are these files in a format that VBA could be used to reduce manual copy and paste approach? I have about 300 of these files I want to extract the data from.

Note: the attached files are from a public access website.

I have an existing spreadsheet with a column of strings (actually VIN numbers). These numbers correllate to a bunch of text files, that can exist in one of three folders (UsernameDesktop1, 2, or 3) on my desktop. What I need the macro to do is:

1) get the filename from A2 (A1 is a heading row)
2) Find the appropriate text file in one of the three folders
3) Put the folder name into I2
4) Scan the text file for some strings, and copy some data that follows those strings into J2:O2 (I can handle programming this)
5) Close the text file
6) repeat above for the remainder of filenames (about 1800 files)

Text File Import With Text To Columns Splitting Same Text Differently

Nov 21, 2007

I have a macro which imports data from a mainframe dump text file and performs 'Text to Columns' on the imported data so that formula in the spreadsheet can act on the data. The code works perfectly well when I use it, but if a different user logs on and performs exactly the same mainframe dump and import macro the Text to Columns action splits the raw data in a different way and the result is that the split renders the formulae useless.

I've experimented a little and for some reason it appears that the 'Field Info' parameters which are produced when the Text to Columns function is recorded in a macro differ between users even though the raw data is exactly the same.

FieldInfo:= _
Array(Array(0, 1), Array(18, 1), Array(35, 1), Array(56, 1), Array(70, 1), Array(88, 1), _
Array(102, 1))
