I need to find a way to find the first nonzero character in the string, and what position it is in. For instance, in the above example, 2 is the first non-zero character, so the function would return 5, since the 2 is the fifth character into the string.

Jan 12, 2009I need to extract a set of 5 numbers from a string of characters. The number set I need is always 5 digits long, always starts with a 1, and always begins after a period. But the number I need can occur in different parts of the string:
In each example below I would want to extract only the 10572 portion.

Additionally (if possible) if the cell is blank I don't want anything to show up, and if the string begins with a letter then I don't want anything to show up either.

given the number set how many times does the number 5 show up in the 4th digit. I know its 3 but for the data size I need to run it on, it is impossible to count.
What function would count how many times a certain number shows up in the same spot?

Nov 3, 2011I am working with data where I need to extract a 10-digit number from a string. Where the 10-digit number is in the string varies, so I can't use a simple left/len combination. Here's an example below:
Something and email@me.com 1234567890 stuff thingsThe formula I am using now is this:
=MID(F4,MIN(FIND({0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9},F4&"0123456789")),10)
This finds the first number in a string and returns that number and the next 9 digits for a total of a 10-digit string (so it would return 1234567890). However, I run into an issue when I have a string that has numbers in the email address.
So this:
number in email123@me.com 1234567890 exampleWould return this:
123@me.comIs there a way to modify the formula above so that it searches for 10 consecutive numbers and not just the first number in a string?

Sep 26, 2009I am trying to extract a 7-consecutive-digit number from a mixed string (letters and numbers). The only condition is that the number has to start with a "7" or "6" and be exactly 7 consecutive numbers long. My function only evaluates for one and one within the other but not both. It's faulted because it only looks for the occurrance of "6". rCell is the string range.

Jan 7, 2014I am using the function Instr to search for a string within some text.
My list contains Apples and Applesauce.
How can I search for only Apples because I seem to be returning Applesuace as well.
Obviously the other way round is not a problem because searching for Applesauce will not return Apples.

Searching For A String In Multi-Lined Row
Jun 6, 2014Best approach for searching for a piece of string from a multi-lined cell. I am trying to do it via VBA but can't seem to figure it out. I tried FIND and Instr. I was thinking of converting the multiple lines into a single line then do an instr comparison from the result but I don't know how to do it.

Jun 2, 2009I have a list of customers and account numbers contained within a cell. I need a formula if possible that searches from the right of the cell and then returns the all the numbers. e.g.

I can not use text to columns as they data is not consistant. Also worth noting is that the customer numbers vary fro 1 digit to 9 digits long.

The name of the txt file is the computer name and data within is simple:

as we can see here this computer has 1 licence for OFFICE.
If the string "FOUND" is found then i want to be able to paste the licence name in a spreadsheet and in the next cell underneath paste the filename it was found in the e.g.

Comp2, comp3, comp4, comp5....and so on......

Jul 16, 2014I need to figure out a way to search for a string in column D and then paste the entire row that string is in to a new sheet. I'd like for this to continue until I paste all of the rows of that string into the next sheet. This is what I got so far, and when I run it, it says an error occurs and then it says either press enter or paste. After I hit enter, it pastes the first row to the next sheet, but that's it. Also should I be doing this with a button?

Searching For And Extracting Dollar Amount From Text String
May 8, 2014I have about 2000 rows of text. Each row is a short write up about prospective new business. There is a reference to a projected dollar amount Within 'MOST' of the write-ups. In order to generate a report about the potential dollars being projected, I need to find an easy way to extract the dollar amount from the text.
In most cases, the projected dollar amounts are preceded by "FY2014" then a "$". However, there are a handful of cases where there is no FY2014, but some variation of the year indicator. Most of the dollar amount entries are written is short text - FY2014 - $5k, 2014 $15k. While some others are written out - FY2014 - $ - $20,000. In still other cases, within the writeup reference is made to the amount of product projected to be shipped by using the dollar symbols. For example - Estimated ship totals $$ for FY2014 = $5k. I've tried writing some formulas, but as in the last example - the first dollar signs are recognized rather than the dollar sign immediately before the value.

Finding Location Of Last String Of 26+ Consecutive Blanks In Row?
Jan 18, 2013I've attached an example of the data I am trying to solve this problem for. Basically I am looking for strings of 26 blanks or more in a row, but I want to determine the ending location of the last string of 26+ blanks. I've been able to determine the location of the maximum string of blanks, but that max group of blanks isn't always the last set over 26.
Any link to find the location of last string of blanks of 26 or more? The example I attached is a good example since there are two strings of 26+ blanks with the last one being shorter. I've also include the answer I'm looking at the end of the data in the example.

Take a two digit number in a cell and separate it into single digits in two cells. If you have the number 50 in a cell, then is there a formula that will take the 5 and put it in cell and take the 0 and put it in the cell beside it?

All variables in the calculation are positive integers.
We take each integer of the pro number and multiply it by a value and sum them to get a total.
An Example: 8 Digit Pro Number: 66988757
Pro Number: 6 6 9 8 8 7 5 7
Position in the Pro Number: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Multiply each digit in the pro number by (10-position) in the number, to achieve a sum.
Using our example pro again:
6*(10-1) + 6*(10-2) + 9*(10-3) + 8*(10-4) + 8*(10-5) + 7*(10-6) + 5*(10-7) + 7*(10-8)
6*9 + 6*8 + 9*7 + 8*6 + 8*5 + 7*4 + 5*3 + 7*2
54+ 48+ 63+48+40+28+15+14 = 310
Take the Sum of the previous calculation and divide it by 11
310/11 = 28
(Actually, it's 28.181818, but since we're working with integers, we truncate everything behind the decimal).
Figure a remainder by multiplying the quotient by 11 and subtracting from the sum.
Remainder = 310 - (28*11) ---> Remainder = 310 - 308 ----> Remainder = 2
Check Digit = 11- Remainder
Check Digit = 11 - 2 ---> Check Digit = 9
Note: if the check digit is 10 or 11, need to subtract 10 from the Check Digit.

Jul 3, 2014I need a macro where I can highlight a column and change all of the 2 digit years to a 4 digit year (actually, some of the 2 digit years are only 1 digit, e.g. "9" instead of "09").
I have an if then statement that I can use in the column after it, but I'd rather change the actual numbers in the original column, rather than adding another column (and having to keep the original, too).
The statement I had was:
=if(A1>=50,1900+A1,2000+A1)
I just copy dragged down to get the cell numbers for the rest of the column... but using A1 was just for an example, here, it's not necessarily going to be in that column. It needs to be just whichever cells I select.
It seems like it should be pretty simple, but I don't know how to word it in a macro.

Apr 25, 2014I have an address (city, state, zip format) in a cell. Some of the zip codes only have a 4-digit zip code which is the way the file was received. I know these zip codes have leading zero. How can I convert these to a five-digit code. Examples are as follows:
