Crashes :: One Large Workbook Or Many Small Ones
Aug 8, 2009
I'm writing an application in Excel, its a little over 5MB after I've run through UsedRegion and trimmed stuff, 94 worksheets. I'm encountering a fair number of crashes these days. My OS is fully patched as is MS Office. Running Windows server 2003 and Excel 2007.
I was wondering about the pros and cons of writing an application in one large workbook or many smaller ones. So far its been one large one but these crashes are really impeding my progress.
What's the best way to remedy these crashes or even start to diagnose?

I'm having a difficulty using LARGE and SMALL.I want to return the 1st to 5th value of an array (each in a different row) choosing months as criteria. While the LARGE formula works fine, when I replace the LARGE() formula for the SMALL() leaving everything else unchanged, the formula returns ZERO and there are no ZEROS in the original data! Here is the function:

I have a column of number that I want to use the Small & Large function on, skipping duplicates.
Example:
Column A has the following numbers;
1
6
1
4
3
2
4
6
17
8
21
8
10
13
I want the Small function to identify the first lowest number (1) and then the second lowest number (2), not (1) again.

I wondered if there is a possibility to make this
Range("L3").FormulaR1C1 = "=SMALL(R[-1]C[-11]:RC[-11],1)"
Range("L4").FormulaR1C1 = "=LARGE(R[-2]C[-11]:R[-1]C[-11],1)"
more simple so i can get the range for my small and large formula's variable? What i try to reach here is:
Range("L3") = smallest date In Range("A2", Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp))
Range("L4") = largest date In Range("A2", Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp))

I have a data dump, on this single excel sheet their are a large number of tables, up to 100 in all, and what i need to do is extract key figures to form a summary table which i then produce stats for.
What i need is a macro or code that will automatically scan the tables, retrieve the key figures and return them in my summary table.
Attached is an example, you will see three small tables labelled Servicing query complex, servicing query simple and total.
I need to extract the blue cell, being the name of the table, the purple cell being the last figure in column c in each table (total number or processes) and the green figure being the the average turnaround. The final figure is i think the hardest to get as its the total number of figures in column c that have either a 0 or a 1 in Colum A. Note that their will be table where neither 0 or 1 will appear.
All figures are dummy figures but the table structure is correct.

I have sales data in columns, the right most column has values in it.
If I filter the data using the standard Filter, I can add only filtered records by using SUBTOTAL(9, filtered_list) and this gives me the answer.
How can I find the 2nd largest or second smallest ONLY from the filtered data without using a Pivot table?

I have a question about sorting. I would like to sort multiple columns from small to large at the same time. Is this possible? I have over 400 columns to sort so I would rather not do this one column at the time.
Example
A.... B.... C
0.2 0.4 0.3
0.4 0.3 0.5
0.1 0.6 0.1
shoud be
A.... B.... C
0.1 0.3 0.1
0.2 0.4 0.3
0.4 0.6 0.5

I understand how to find the top 5 /bottom 5 values using the large/small functions, but the question I have is: How do I get associated fields. For example I attached a sample sheet with values (Fields: Ticker,TE,Sector,Return). How do I get the Ticker,Sector that the return is for. I'd like to show all the associated fields that relate to the retun, but I can't find the solution on how to do that.

I have a VBA macro that goes through a decently complex system to delete something like 70 old tabs, create new ones, link data from a main page to these tabs, and create 3 plots per tab. When running the script, it will go through something like 50 of the tabs, and then receive an error on something rather trivial that has been done many times before successfully in this macro (like changing the font size on one of the axes on one of the graphs). I tried an On Error Resume Next, and sure enough it ignores the error, but it then does some sort of crazy loop starting over recreating all the tabs incorrectly, and then excel just shuts down. So, that's no good.
Anyway, I can comment out the change of the font size, but it still has the same issue on some other trivial thing. It seems like the system just runs out of room or needs a cache cleared or something. I'm not sure.

I have a file that has been produced using Statistica software. The file is supposed to have around one million rows, and when exported to Excel the file is about 30 MB. When I open the .xlsx file in Excel 2010 only two pages of data appear. The rows also have weird numbering. The first square of the A column is A1. The second is A3833, the third is A6789, then A8161, then A8162, then A8163, then A8164, then A18070.
The scroll button to the left of the screen is long, as if the document was only two pages long. When the scroll button is click-and-dragged a small beige square appears with a row number. This small square seems to be aware that not all rows are shown as it shows many more rows than are visible to me.

As I've learned to develop Excel apps with vba over the years I've noticed that, if the Excel app starts to get too large (over 1MB) saving it will often cause the application to crash for no apparent reason - the result being that I lose all the vba code I entered before the last save - with the worst case being that, on occasion I have lost all of the vba code in an applications!!!
So, I've learned to back up often using a third-party utility that I use to save my applications, which works wonders in allowing me to save my application without it crashing. The application is called Code Cleaner 97.exe. It was designed around Excel 97 (which I still use) but if possible I'd like to get an updated version for Excel 2003 and Excel 2007, which I also use.
Does anyone know of a more recent version of this utility, or another similar utility that allows large Excel applications to be properly saved, etc?
Code Cleaner 97.exe was a freebie that was available through one of the old Compuserve Excel forums. It was a very popular utility and was suggested as a means to save one's Excel apps without the app getting trashed, etc.
I'm not expecting a freebie solution so I'll gladly pay for something that allows me to save my large Excel apps without them crashing, etc.

I’m launching a new workbook, exporting some stuff, basically creating a report. But then I want to add a BeforePrint event to the new worksheet. Both of the macro below works great right up until I change “Sheet1” to “ThisWorkBook”…then Excel crashes.

Dim LineNum As Long
Dim Copybook As Workbook
Set Copybook = Excel.Workbooks.Add
Set VBCodeMod = Copybook.VBProject.VBComponents("sheet1").CodeModule

Three times (by three different users) over the past two months, a workbook has gotten into what appears to be some sort of corrupted state. When you attempt to open the workbook you get the "report to Microsoft" screen which states "Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close". Proceeding on this screen closes the entire instance of Excel, including the offending workbook and any others that are open. However, if I simply open and save the workbook in Excel safe mode, then it resolves the problem. But, again, it has happened three times so it keeps coming back.
A little more background: there is a custom add-in referenced which contains many custom functions. This add-in is also referenced by other workbooks, none of which have had this problem. The Workbook_Open event only does what I consider to be superficial processing; it hides some sheets, selects a sheet, defaults some shape colors, and defaults a checkbox to True. In other words, nothing too heavy going on at startup, in my opinion. I have tried several times to break into the code between the time the workbook begins to load and when the "report to Microsoft" screen is displayed, but this was unsuccessful.
I was hoping that the fact that simply saving it from safe mode resolves the problem might indicate the problem to someone on the forum. I have a copy of the file in its corrupted state but I have not attached it because it contains some business sensitive information.

I use spinbuttons to increment 3 data cells (C7:C9). These cells are used as entry data for some calculations and also trigger some macros via change event. Every time I use them the workbook crashes, this is only since I modified one of the instantiated macros that sorts a table on another sheet. See below the spinbutton code with the call of the macro and further the code of the sorting macro:
Private Sub SpinButton1_SpinDown()
Range("C7").Value = Range("C7").Value - 0.05
End Sub
Private Sub SpinButton1_SpinUp()
Range("C7").Value = Range("C7").Value + 0.05
End Sub
Private Sub SpinButton2_SpinDown()
Range("C8").Value = Range("C8").Value - 0.05

I have the following strange problem. A simple macro 'ActiveWorkbook.Close' causes excel to crash if I use it with a button on my sheet (a form). When I run the macro via developer > macros > run
the macro runs as expected. Even if a run the macro with alerts (thanks to jproffer) the problem persist.

The code below resides in my personal.XLS Module. When I step through the code everything works till it reaches the point in red then I get the pop up that says excel needs to close and asks to send or not to send.
I noticed that if I choose recover my work and restart excel and I look at the code in THISWORKBOOK of the recovered workbook that the code I wanted placed there is there.
Can anyone explain why this is happening? I have the macro's security set to low and a check mark in the trust access to vb projects.
Any Idea's how to fix this?

I have a large model which basically imports data into a sheet, pastses extra columns with formulas into the data sheet, refreshes some pivot tables based on all the data in the data sheet and then refreshes a report with the data from both the data sheet and the pivots.
My problem is that the model is incredibly unstable. It will usually only let me run the process about 1 or 2 times before causing Excel to have a severe error, and crash. That xls will then become corrupted, and then not work again. However, if I restore a backup version, it will always run fine again, regardless of the data, 1 or 2 times.
In the past, it seems like the error may be tied to using either:
Sheets.add
or
Sheets.delete
though I think this is a syptom, rather than the problem. VBA will actually just not perform these commands when the sheet is corrupted.

I am looking to create a summary page to show open items within a log of initiatives. The workbook has 21 different tabs logging initiatives by the each individual person and also 9 other data tabs. On the tabs containing the initiative logs, it states whether the initiative is open or closed and I only want the summary tab to show the open items. Is it possible to do this?

I'm having a little bit of trouble with my code. I basically need to copy-paste special a large workbook (50 worksheets) into a new range-valued workbook. I've defined Sheet as S, but in some instances when I use the variable "S" I received a runtime error 1004.
Please see the highlighted red "S" in the code below.
Also, if one knew of an easier method for this particular operation that would be great!
Sub PasteSpecial()
Dim W As Workbook
Dim S1 As Worksheet
Dim S As Sheets
Set W = Workbooks("newfile2")
Set S1 = W.Worksheets("Sheet1")
Set S = Sheets
S(Array("Sheet1", "Sheet2", "Sheet3")).Select
S1.Activate
S(Array("Sheet1", "Sheet2", "Sheet3")).Copy
Cells.Select
Range("a1").Activate
Selection.Copy
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues, Paste:=XlPasteFormat
S("Sheet2").Select
Cells.Select
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues, Paste:=XlPasteFormat
S("Sheet3").Select
Cells.Select
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues, Paste:=XlPasteFormat
MsgBox "New Range-Valued Workbook has been created"
Application.CutCopyMode = False
End Sub

I have a sheet with 200 sheets in called workbook x , I need to create a summary new workbook with only data on 1 sheet.
I want to pull specific cells from the large workbook x to 1 single sheet on a summary workbook:
A6 I want to be surname taken from B1 of workbook x
B6 will be first name taken from C1 of workbook x
Then I will copy data from M1 on mastersheet to cell C6 on new workbook
Then I want to copy Row A11 up to T11 and paste on the new workbook (Summary) in D6 staying in the row 6
Not sure if this is the tricky bit I want to repeat as above B11 to T11 but paste in the next empty cell of the same row of D in my summary
I need to repeat this action upto A23 to T23
Then I need it to move on to the next sheet in X and repeat all the steps above but do it on the next row down row 7 and so on

I have the following code which filters data in a sheet, and loads the numbers into textboxes on a userform. There are two multipage controls, each with several textboxes on them. I have commented out several lines because if I leave any of them in, it crashes excel.
It will work once. But if I close the workbook, re-open it, and run the code again, it crashes.
The thing I find really interesting is that all the 'problem lines' were added in as part of a retro-fit. The person I created this workbook for needed one more column of data. I followed the same programming pattern as what I used on the other, but only these ones seem to cause problems. Any thoughts?
NOTE: The message boxes were just to help me figure out which lines of code were causing the crash. ....

I'm trying to use a listbox and wanted to have the data sit in a different sheet. When I do this, I get a message about low memory and then excel says it has an error and shuts down. When I move the data to the same sheet as the listbox, there is no problem.
