Formatting Cells So They Come Up 0 If No Data From Formula
Sep 9, 2009
I have a table that automatically gets populated each month via VLOOKUP.
There are about 14 columns and anywhere from 80 to 130 rows.
At the bottom of each column I SUM the total for the column.
Because I never know how many rows will get populated I have my VLOOKUP formula go down about 180 rows, then I SUM at the 183 row. But because the formula returns N/A on all of the rows that do not have data my SUM in row 184 returns N/A. This means the end-user has to go back in and delete all of the rows that have N/A. I don't want them to have to do this. Is there anyway to format the cells so that this does not happen?

I have a spreadsheet filled with formulas that depend on a value being entered into A2, A3, A4, etc... So column A starting at A2 is where I will manually input a number and the formulas I have in columns B, C, and D will import information from another sheet based off what is put in column A. In column D the formula I have to import data
is =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A2,Master!C:M,11,0),"").
This will import another number. Additionally in column D, I have conditional formatting that will return a red, yellow or green light based off the rule I have in place. Everything works fine, the only problem is that column D has a green light all the way down even without a value being placed in column A. I would like to find out a way to keep the cells in column D blank until a value is entered in column A. Also, if I go back and delete the value in column A, I would like the corresponding cell in column D to go back to blank as well.

I have a cells that are formatted for accounting with a formula in them.Whether the formula is evaluated or not, the £ sign still shows. Is there a way of only getting the £ sign to show only if the formula IS evaluated (i.e leaving a blank cell if the formula IS NOT evaluated)....

I am having some issues with my conditional formatting code. I need 5 condtions, so I cannot use the built in Cond. Format. Column E is the average of cells F,G,H and when I update the numbers in F/G/H the background color is changed to the appropriate color, but column E does not change color!!! Example: The average (E) will start as a 90 and have a red background, then when the inputs(F/G/H) are changed and the average(E) now equals 30 but it is still shaded red! Is there anyway to have every cell updated, to make the cell change from Red to Green automatically??? Below is a copy of my code.
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
Dim WatchRange As Range
Dim CellVal As Integer
If Target.Cells.Count > 1 Then Exit Sub
CellVal = Target
Set WatchRange = Range("E6:H15")
If Not Intersect(Target, WatchRange) Is Nothing Then
Select Case CellVal
Case Empty
Target.Interior.ColorIndex = xlColorIndexNone
Case 0 To 19
Target.Interior.ColorIndex = 8
Case 20 To 39 ..........................

I had a list of people on sheet1 of my workbook, and on sheet 2 a table with a list of names and their department.
I started off by wanting to use VLOOKUP within the conditional formatting feature of Excel to find anyone who worked in "finance" in sheet 2. I could get this formula to work on the sheet but as soon as I put it into the conditional format feature it wouldn't work.
Trying to find a work around I added a column in sheet 1 where I inputted the VLOOKUP formula and caused it to display "1" if the person worked in finance. It looked like this:
A: Person's name
B: Value of 1 or 0
The idea was to hide column B and use conditional formatting to say "if column B2 = 1 colour column A2 blue". Now I could get this to work on a single row but couldn't make it work over a range, ie. "if cells A2:A150 have a 1 in the column next to them colour the relevent cell blue"
I feel I'm missing the obvious. I found quite a few answers online but non actually specified how to get the conditional formatting to recognise the relevent cell it should be looking at in a range.
1) How would I get conditional formatting working over a range
2) Whether it is possible to use VLOOKUP within the conditional formatting function of Excel.

I have a few rather large spreadsheets full of addresses, but for simplicity I'll refer to two(Group A, Group B). I can go back and edit accordingly. Group A is a master list of users. After sending out a mass message, using Group A, certain users weren't able to receive the message for various reasons (address problems, spam filters, etc.)--thus Group B. All of the users of Group B are still in the Group A spreadsheet, and this is where my problem comes in.
I need to take all of the entries from Group B, find them in Group A and change their cell colors (along with a few following cells in the same row). I tried to record a macro to do this, but found that a more in depth solution was required. I tried to implement some VBA but my knowledge is, at best, limited.
Here's what I've done so far:
Before recording the macro I copied/pasted the addresses from Group B onto the bottom (a few cells down) of Group A.
I copied the first Group B address, started to record, and pasted the first address into the Find tool. After it was found, I changed the color of the needed cells, went back to the list of Group B cells and deleted the top entry. Next, I copied the second entry (the new first entry) and stopped recording.
When I pressed the shortcut key for the macro, it deleted all the cells correctly; it just didn't format Group A like I intended. I then opened up the VBA editor within excel and found this:
Sub Colorfill()
Range("A4559").Select
Selection.Copy
Cells.Find(What:="USERADDRESS", After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlFormulas _
, LookAt:=xlPart, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, SearchDirection:=xlNext, _
MatchCase:=False).Activate
Range("A2038:I2038").Select
With Selection.Interior
.ColorIndex = 43
.Pattern = xlSolid
End With
ActiveWindow.ScrollRow = 4349
ActiveWindow.SmallScroll Down:=186
ActiveWindow.LargeScroll Down:=-2
ActiveWindow.ScrollRow = 1508
ActiveWindow.SmallScroll Down:=198
ActiveWindow.ScrollRow = 4569
ActiveWindow.SmallScroll Down:=-27
Rows("4559:4559").Select
Selection.Delete Shift:=xlUp
End Sub

I have column of cells, both of with have drop down menus to select information from. I have an adjacent cell to display an error based on conditions. Is there a way to have conditional formatting to apply to the cells with Data Validation to change the color, based on the error. I have tried using the Conditional Formatting options but it still does not change the color of them. I believe i have to use the formula option, but not exactly sure what to put, i know a if statement could work but unsure on how, there are only two conditions that i would need for it to apply, if the adjacent cell has an error, and when it does not. Is this possible?

I have tried to modify the examples here on the site, but can't seem to get it. Cell G1 has list data validation of 5 numbers,6 digits long. In the cells below G10:G500, these numbers are listed. However, in the G10:G500 range the numbers have 8 digits. The first 6 digits remain the same and only the last 2 change. Here is what I would like to see happen: When I chose a number from G1, I would like to highlight all the cells with the first 6 digits matching G1 in the range G10:G500.

how to apply conditional formatting via VBA to a range of cells based on input from another range of cells. Obviously this would be easy in Excel 2010, but I'm still using 2003 at the office and it needs to stay in this format to be readable by other users:
For cells M8:EK8, my conditional formatting
condition 2: Formula Is =AND($E$8>=M2,(($E$8-$D$8)>=(N2-$M$2))), color index is 40
condition 3: Formula Is =AND($F$8<=M2,$G$8>=M2), color index is 39
I want to add:
condition 4: Formula Is =AND($H$8<=M2,$I$8>=M2), color index is 40
condition 5: Formula Is =AND($J$8<=M2,$K$8>=M2), color index is 39
and so on
The cells in the range M8:EK8 are blank, they only get colored based on input added to D8 to K8. If there is no input, then the cells should be uncolored.

i am trying to import an excel document and then copy over some columns to another worksheet from the imported worksheet, using a macro. Everything imports and copies over fine except for one column that has cells that comprise of a list of number separated by commas. When these cells get copied over some of the values retain the commas but some of them (specially when there are a lot values separated by comma) gets changed to this format
From: 1,229,124,012,441,230
To: 1.22912E+15
From: 1044,1048,1052,1053
To: 1.0441E+15
From: 1279,1282,1286,1295,1299
To: 1.27913E+19
From:926,929,938
To: 926929938
I am trying to figure out whats happening here! Is there a max number of letters this column can take and if it exceeds that value, excel converts them to this format? Or is the formatting gets changed to something else while copying and pasting?

I'm using Excel 2010.
I have created a spreadsheet with 3 month inspection schedules on using the formula below.
=DATE(YEAR(C50),MONTH(C50)+3,DAY(C50))
I then copy this in to a cell where I want the date to appear... and then in to another cell where I want a further 3 month date to appear. Obviously changing the cell reference.
I would like the formula to ignore the very first cell "C50" if there is no date inputted in this cell.

I try this method but data entry not allowed
Here is a scenario to protect
formula cells but allow access to data cells:
. Select all cells in the worksheet by clicking on the top left corner of the sheet.
. On the Format menu Click Cells.
. Click on the Protection tab.
. Uncheck the Locked and
Hidden check boxes, then click OK.
These four steps will make all cells in the worksheet unprotected and can therefor be modified. Next step is to
protect the formula cells, and here is how we do it:
. Select all cells that have formulas.
. On the Format menu Click Cells.
. Click on the Protection tab.
. Check the Locked and Hidden check boxes, then click OK.
. On the Tools menu click
Protection and select Protect sheet

I have a moving average spreadsheet that I am having trouble with. In column F of 'Data for Pivot' Tab, I have a set of data that doesn't begin populating until 101 data points (cell C8 in 'Mov_Avg_Chart' is the input; in this cell F138 of 'Data for Pivot' tab) after data begins populating in Column E of 'Data for Pivot' Tab (in this case data begins populating in Column E in row 38).
What I would like to do is have the data in cells F38 to F137 = the value in cell F138. From there on forward (cells F138 and onwards), I would like the formula to calculate data in the same way as it is currently calculating it. That is, I would like the values in cells F38 to F137 be 0.00110 (in the current example). However, the data will be constantly changing. Thus, sometimes the data in column F will begin at a different cell than cell F138. In essence, I want the formula: when column E begins populating data but column F has not, I want those column F values to equal the value of the first populated value in column F (which is usually numerous cells below this value).
I just can't seem to get this one right after spending considerable time on it. I would appreciate any help you can give on this.

I am trying to have my spreadsheet pull data from one tab and cell if they match another.
Tab "Ag Orders" column H, I enter data in lets say cell H37. Whatever I enter, if it matches tab "reference List" C:C, then "ag orders" column G (specifically G37) should enter the data in "reference List" D:D
So since in H37 I entered 34000 - 314620, G37 should pull in Farm Operations since on the referene list tab that string of numbers (C11 matches up with D11)
a little confusing but I hope it makes sense.
13-14 budget-AG.xlsm
This isn't the exact formula I used but something like it and it wasn't working. It wouldn't match the data up correctly on a few of the department names

I have attached a spreadsheet that is causing me difficulty. I currently have a formula that is displaying in V3 the highest grade when it looks up the data in A3,H3 & O3. Then this is repeated for W3 when the data is looked up in B3, I3 & P3 etc etc... BUT
I need the formula to work if only block one is complete i.e. (1 Explore grade, 1 Plan Grade, 1 Make Grade etc).(please see the example to understand what is meant by a block)
The current formulae will only display a grade if all cells are complete i.e., A3,H3 & O3.
So I am looking for the formula to:
If A3 has a grade in it I wish V3 to display it because its the only grade. (even if H3 & O3 are blank)
As and when H3 has a grade filled in I want the formula to select the highest and display it in V3 (again even if O3 is blank)
As and when A3, H3 & O3 has a grade in it I wish the formula to lookup and display the highest in V3
Ans this repeated for all different areas, Explore, Plan, Make etc.

formula to calculate how many cells in a column contain data of any kind. The data might be a number, a word, or even a symbol, such as "):>:)" for example. The range will change from time to time. For example, one day it might be a2:a4956. A few days from now I might delete a few rows from the top, such as rows 2 through 26, so then the range would be a2:a4931. Then I might add rows at the bottom with data that I need to be counted. I dont want to have to change the formula evertime I add or delete rows with data. I do not want the formula to count a blank space created by the space bar as "data." One formula I used sorta worked, but if the cell appeared empty, but had been cleard out by pressing the space bar instead of the delete key, the formula counted it as a cell with data.

What I mean is, I have a formula that sums a specific cell across several tabs.
=sum('120:125'!C15)
Lets say that this formula resides in a summary sheet. And that the summary sheet is definable by a control in another sheet (user friendly).
So in the user friendly sheet, a user toggles to 'Assets'. In the Summary sheet, Assets appears in cell a1, there is a lookup table somewhere, and a lookup value of 120 appears in cell a2.
I want the formula above to adjust for cell a2.
If a2 = 115, then the formula should adjust to
=sum('115:125'!C15)
Of course after I understand how to do this, I can do the same with the end of the sheet range and the cell ref.

Working in Excel 2007. I am using excel for a data log (basically) and want it to format all empty cells in a row yellow if there is data in column A
Basically, If i have a value in A2, I want any empty cell between B2-G2 to be filled in yellow (as an idicator to the inputter that the cell needs to be completed).
there is already conditional formatting on these cells, which i want to maintain for the non-empty cells. I also have "0" as a value, so I couldn't use the basic conditional formatting setting it =0, it highlighted cells with $0.00, which i do not want.
