I use the function OFFSET for names in order to be able to add new rows below the table without the need of changing the range of the name.
However, there are error produced if I work it this method.
I am not sure whether it is due to the formula but maybe because of the data or format validation ? Generally, in my cells I include
if(CellRef="";"";formula)
in order to copy the formula down. Pls also look at the defined names ....
I am trying to get to grips with the dynamic ranges for pivot tables. I have named a range data and in the refers to section put:
=OFFSET(Sheet2!A1,0,0,COUNTA(Sheet2!A:A),COUNTA(Sheet2!1:1))
I was hoping that then when i go to data > Pivot table and it asks for the range i could put =Data but it tells me that the range is invalid. I have attached a copy at the bottom.

Each time I go to the cell the has the data validation referred to in this range, the drop down list shows the list from the last entry and with more spaces than needed. =OFFSET('GROCERIES AMEX'!$E$65,0,0,COUNTA('GROCERIES AMEX'!$E:$E)-15,1)
The " -15" is the number that varies all the time. Is there any way to remedy this so the formula behaves as if the list was located in Row 1?

I am working with a dynamic range on sheet name "DataPrep", the named range is "TGSDataSourceRange".
I need a formula that will look from row 2 down to the last row for columns "A-H".
The purpose is to identify the active range. I think the function is "Counta", but I can't get it right.
I am using the CountIf function (in column B) to count the number of events called "EVENT1" from columns C (Time) and D (Events), but the range needs to include all cells which, at the current B row, have the same value as in row A. I want to use a dynamic range so that I can account for the repeats.

I've normally just dynamically selected a range using the xldown feature but because this row contains formula it goes always down to the bottom of the formula instead of the last cell which isn't blank.
How would i go about generating this dynamic range that stops at the first cell that contains no value (but has a formula)? Perhaps a do while loop which looped down until it hit the first blank and then assigned the cells it had looped through as the range?
I have a problem creating a circular reference with dynamic ranges. I have searched already but can't find the specifc problem. I have a spreadsheet where I use vba code to insert extra columns. Within the worksheet there are sum calculations at the end of each row. When I add a new column within the table I would like the sum calculation to expand to account for this extra column.
Now, I thought that dynamic ranges would be the way to go but the only way I can see to do it creates a circular reference as the CountA function trys to count the cell with the sum function in it.

The two formulas work well in separate sheets but crash when put together, how could I possibly insert the second address formula into the first one?
I am having a few problems with dynamic named range in excel 2000.
When adding new data to the range, excel extends the range correctly, but only copies some of the formula correctly. It does not copy the formula that references a cell from another line.
I am trying to create a excel spreadsheet and have a formula =e10-e9, which does not copy down.
I have a range which will change in size & in content, & I want this to be a Named Range at whatever size it is.
Reason I want to is because I want to make a Validation List with this dynamic range. I also want a Validation list which lists the content of 2 or more dynamic ranges which may or may not be on the same worksheet - is this possible?
i.e.
First dynamic range: called "Milestones" at A11
Second dynamic range: called "Activities" at A25
& make a Validation list that will list content of both
The problem lies in the following line

When it is executed i get the 1004 error ("application-defined or object-defined error)...
min and max are defined (as worksheetfunction.min and max of a selection), and their values are correct. The problem seems to lie in the max variable, namely if i simplify the formula to just
Range(Cells(1, a), Cells(b, a)).Formula = "=(rc[-1]-" & min & ")"
it works ok, but if it is
Range(Cells(1, a), Cells(b, a)).Formula = "=(rc[-1]-" & max & ")"
I get the error.
I am completely baffled considering both variables are defined in the same way i.e.
min = Application.WorksheetFunction.min(Selection)
max = Application.WorksheetFunction.max(Selection)
I have an issues with a formulae I have written to measure two factors;
A; How many different countries appear within a certain date range. B; What countries are they.
I tried a unique list, but could not get it to work within a range? I dont particuarly care how the data is pulled through as long as I do it. At the moment I have become stuck in 'Unique Ranges' and have n given up?
The formulae issue is in the tab "Problem_Formulae", the dat in the sheet 1, and the date ranges in sheet 2. Also, just to make life a bit more challenging pivot tables are a no go .
I have created a dynamic chart, courtesy of the Jon Peltier website. I have 2 problems. No problem with getting the chart to work, the problem comes when I delete the data. I get an error message telling me that 'A formula in the worksheet contains one or more invalid references.' The other problem is that I cannot copy the worksheet to another worksheet in the same workbook. Well that is not strictly true, I can copy it but it wont updat. Any ideas as to how I can overcome this? Any suggestions welcome, apart from 'Don't delete the data then'
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have created a dynamic chart for multiple series. I have created this using the offset function and have named 20 ranges. The problem I have is that if only 19 of the 20 named ranges are populated it reads that the worksheet contains one or more invalid references.
Is there a way to stop this from happening?
I am trying to merge data from two worksheets onto a 3rd for a mail merge. The COLLECTIONS sheet contains the acct #, name and amount owed. The ADDRESSES sheet contains the acct #, name and all of the address information. The 3rd sheet is the MERGE sheet that I'm using as the reference point for my word document and the mail merge. Upon reflection the MERGE sheet is probably not necessary, but made sense to have it when I started out.

On the ADDRESSES sheet I am trying to name a dynamic range "AddressList" (I'm trying to go dynamic because the list of addresses will change from month to month). I am using the following formula in the refers to field when I name the range:
=Offset(Addresses!$A$5,0,0,CountA(Addresses!$A:$A),CountA(Addresses!$1:$1))
I think this is what is giving me my problem, because the named range does not show up in the list when I try to go to the named range.
Just in case that is not the problem, the #Ref is showing up when on the MERGE sheet I type a vlookup formula referencing the acct # on the ADDRESSES sheet. That formula looks like this:
=VLOOKUP(A4,AddressList,3,0)
which seems simple enough. Before trying to make the named range dynamic the formula worked fine, which is why I'm thinking the named range is what's giving me the problems.
I am using defined names to build a chart. This is working fine, but I also would like to use a defined name to control the +/- fields for the error bars. The defined names I have set up are correct, and I am able to enter them into the sorce data form but Excel does not display them.

Unfortunately since creating the new validation a circulating error occurs when tabbing through the table (B) to create a new line or entry? Additionally I've found the following to occur also;
1. The payments and PO# columns converts a red shade colour?
2. The validation on Table B description column do not work while in excel online edit mode?
I'm using Data Validation for various fields in a form and I'm trying to make it user friendly by adding Error Alert conditions and text explaining why the error has occurred. I also want the form to be translatable into other languages.
For some VBA message boxes that get displayed I can put the English text in some hidden cells and that can be translated easily by someone without access to the code. But I cannot figure out how to make the Data Validation Error Alert messages point to a cell so that they are also translatable without forcing the translator to open each Data Validation dialog.
I'm am running Excel 2003 SP2 on Windows XP SP2.
I have a macro which modifies cells in a spreadsheet. But for brevity sake, I have an empty spreadsheet which has an Auto_open macro and two subroutines in it. The subroutines initially consist of just the Sub and End Sub statements.
The Auto_open procedure reads in lines from two text files (generated by another application), and inserts the lines into each of the empty subroutines. Auto_open then runs the two subroutines.
I have been able to get this dynamic creation of the subroutines to work for one subroutine, but not for the second. I receive the compile error: "Only comments may appear after End Sub, End Function, or End Property". I don't see anything wrong with the inserted code.
The modified subroutines appear fine, and if I save the macros with the modified code, close excel, rename the text files so they are no longer read in, and re-open the spreadsheet, the auto_open procedure and the two subroutines run fine. This tells me the code itself is okay, and yet it won't work during the initial run.
Below is the macro code in its original state:

When I open the spreadsheet the first time, it gives me the first message box from Sub A, but then generates the error and highlights the Sub SubB() line.
To duplicate the problem:
1. Insert the macro into a spreadsheet. Save and exit it.
2. Create the files %TEMP%subA.txt and %TEMP%subB.txt containing the single MsgBox lines.
3. Open up the spreadsheet. SubA will run and a message box will appear. Then the compilation error will occur.
4. Save and exit the spreadsheet.
SubA will now contain:

5. Rename the two text files, so that the next time you open the spreadsheet it won't try to insert the lines from the files into the subroutines.

see attached example. I am trying to write an error detection routine that iterates through worksheets that have numeric values for names (ignore text names or alphanumeric). Macro checks range on each numeric worksheet E3:E33 and is supposed to report back on the SummarySheet if any value other than 1 or 0 is found in range E3:E33 on any numeric-name worksheet. Code as follows:

Problem is that it just reports EVERY worksheet as having an error when clearly most don't (none do I think in the attached example).
Try changing some of ranges E3:E33 to values other than 1 or 0, it still reports all sheets. Why the macro does not evaluate the range E3:E33 properly and just reports every worksheet as having an error?
