Conditional Moving Average Omitting Adjacent Blanks
May 4, 2008
how do I perform calculations on the last x non-blank instances in a data range?
for example, let's say I have a spreadsheet of 5 baseball players' batting averages (rows are team game number played, columns are at bats and hits for each player). I want to see how each player has performed in their last 10 games played, but some players have not played in every game. If I just use the sum function for the last 10 cells, I won't get the correct information for any player that has missed one or more of the last 10 games.
I have run into a problem with the array formula. After inserting formula with the CTRL+SHFT+Enter it is giving me the same sum to the 3 cells that I had array formulas in but trying to capture different data from what was in the capturing column. Example:
If row F consists of text types: Move-in, Mid Year, and Year End as potential options, and row G is the score for that text type(cells will consist percentages), give me the average of all the cells in row G that are specific to Move-In only, but don't include the blanks in the average.
My existing formula isn't designated to exclude the blanks. how to exclude blanks and how to get it to stop giving me the same result in the three separate cells. My current formula is as such: {=AVERAGE(IF(F2:F73=E76, H2:H73))}
Trying to do the following. Look at a range of cells in a row, say A1- H1. Sum the last three cells that have a number in them versus being blank. So, let's say the last numbers in row 1 are in cells B1, F1 and H1, but in row 2 they may be in cells E2, F2 and G2.
I have data in B4:B55 and need a formula to return a count of rows, including rows that are blank. However, there are hidden rows that need to be omitted from the count.
I'm looking to return the values in column A adjacent to the cells in Column B equal to "Y". The kicker has been returning only the cells where the condition is true. Column C displays the desired behavior.
The closest I've been able to get is with a simple IF statement but I'm pretty sure the answer is a far cry away from there and likely requires an array formula. I'd prefer not to use VLOOKUP or OFFSET but will if the alternative is very complex.
I use an old accounting program to download sales history into excel. For sales where there is only one line item and therefore 1 row, there is no problem. Sales with multiple items show a summary of the sale in the first row and the line item details in rows after.
On multiple item sales (shaded in yellow), the total postage is shown in the summary row (shaded in orange). The postage fields in the line items are blank (shown shaded in blue). I need to split the total postage by number if line items and put the value in the line items. i.e. if the total postage is $10 for two items, I need to show $5 for each line item.
The summary row identifies the number of line items in the "Qty" column ( cells in green). This cell could be used to divide into the postage (in orange) and also count how many rows below to put the answer in
In a worksheet, J2:J52 contains a list of unique strings; each cell populated by an embedded formula. Some of the cells contain a valid 'blank' "" given by the formula.
I'd like K2:K52 to contain the values J2:J52, with all the populated cells stacked at the top and the 'blank' cells at the bottom. 'Blank' cells do not have to be in any particular order.
I've been fiddling with the formula kindly provided by WindKnife on the second post in the thread below for the past couple of hours, but to no avail:
I'm using an arrays AVERAGE(IF( to average several scores from one spreadsheet to another. However, if I have 30 employees, 1 may have no score, and I don't want that no score to factor into the average, but with the above array, it does. Specifically, I get the wrong average for Score A, but the right one for Overal Score. See attached sample.
I want to figure a class average for a test, but I have students that have moved. My Excel is automatically counting them as a zero. How can I program/tell Excel to skip any blanks rather than count them in the average?
Trying to determine the best way to do this. I understand that the standard AVERAGE function will ignore blanks if given a range; the function I'm using does a search for a particular value to determine if a value is to be included in the averaging: ...
I am trying to make a excell spread sheet that will calculate my students averages for the year. I need to account for zeros in the coarse and I want this excel sheet to track the current average all year long . So I do not need to include my blanks in the average as I go. Also , how do I formulate my average accum to show this formula - Test scores, four of them count as 80% of the total grade. So each test is worth 20% / Lab 10% of total grade and homework is additional 10%. I downloaded the templete from MSN and have tweaked it to my liking except for the coding above. Please advise. I am a below par on Excel. My attachemtn is below of my templete. One note. the templete gave me the room to include 13 ros of homework - but I will not necessarily use all of them... I can make it one row for home work only ....
Attached is an xls with my formulas and problem. We need a way to factor in zeros in grading student workers. However, we also need a way to omit blank or null cells if the workers did not do a particular project. The formulas currently in the sheet compute zeros for both scenarios, lowering the overall 'grade' for workers who didn't do a project compared with workers who did the project but got a '0'
I have obtained a function (from this site at Exponential Moving Average) which is supposed to help calculate simple mathematical values but it's not working on spreadsheet. assist with taking a look at this as I have attached the spreadsheet?

Basically what I want to achieve is the average % of Dec 11 (D11:D22 on the sheet im working on) scores but excluding any blank fields (not excluding potential scores of 0%)
I have a set of data in column A consisting of over 1200 numeric values. The problem is that there are some blank cells in this column: Colums A data:120, blank, 135, blank, etc I need to calaculate the average for the first 25 data and then claculate the average for the next 25 data set dropping the first 5 and adding new consecutive 5 data ignoring all the bank cells!, so if the first statemnet is : averagre (a1:a24), the second statmnet should read (a6:a:29) not counting the blank cells. I don't know what array formula can be used to do this job for me.
Otherwise sum the contents of Bf6:BH6 and divide by the number of cells that are not empty in the range U6:W6 (to get an average of only the values in that range not including blanks).
I have done quite a bit of looking on Google and looked over the posts in this forum, however, I can't find an example Excel worksheet for a linear weighted moving average.
The data set I am applying this to has 180 data points and the linear weights should extend back over the last 30 points.
I am trying to work out a formula for calculating average of non adjacent cells but it should ignore any cells with 0:00:00 value or are empty.
At the moment I am using the simple formula =average(A1,A2,A5,A9). But if any of these cells is empty or 0:00:00, it then gives me a wrong average. I could have used a array formula with if function but it then calculates all other cells in between as well that I don't want to e.g. I may not want to include include A3 in my calculation but as it has some value in it, it gets in the calculation and gives the wrong answer again.
I have a column of numbers that are derived with a formula. I need to Average only the ones that either have a Positive or Negative number, ignoring blanks or zero.
I have tried Search but couldn't find anything that address both blank and zero.
I am using the built in moving average function to calculate the moving average of a set of numbers. There are a few things that i would like to do.
First i would like to have the last result displayed in a single cell. Then next to that cell i would like to have a cell that would specify the period of the moving average. I would like to be able to change the period in that cell and have that change it in the actual function. And finally i would like to have the moving average in a chart that would also change its period once that is changed in the respective cell. I realize that this might need some VB coding which i am currently learning.
The average of the first 10 cells is now AVERAGE(A4.A13) = 5.5
I would like to enter one formula in say cell A1 that will calculate the moving average in the first ten cells each time a new entry is added. Naturally as needed, new rows are added below cell A1. I hope my problem is clear.
as I have been unable to solve it myself. I have tried using offset but have been unable to resolve the issue.
I have a column of data that contains various blank cells where no data was measured. In the adjacent column I want to take the moving average of the last 4 data points including the most recent entry. My problem is i do not know how to handle blank cells where there was no data. I need it to average the last four in the column where data acutally exists. I am ok with using helper cells if needed and I am not worried about the first four results at this time.
The following code works fine if the data is sorted from oldest to newest. I need for it to work when the data is sorted from newest to oldest. For this to work, I would need a change that works something like this: "total1 = total1 + close_(a, 1) * a" would be "total1 = total1 + close_(a, 1) * b" with "b" incremented in the opposite direction of "a". I code very infrequently & have tried a lot of different things, searched the Internet, etc. all to no avail.
For instance, with "close" data in column "I", the data sorted as follows works with the formula "=WMA(OFFSET(I2,0,0,9,1) )" to correctly return "791.50", but the opposite sort returns the wrong number.
The correct calculation is: (807.19*9+798.38*8+793.81*7+793.06*6+776.28*5+769.48*4+773.2*3+789.01*2+793.87*1)/(9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1).
Currently i have a spreadsheet with realtime data feeds from Bloomberg (or reuters). What i would like to do is:
a. Fill a vector/column of data values every minute until we have 30 observations i.e. from 9.00am till 9.30pm
b. This will then allow me to calculate a moving average of the last 30 (1 minute) observations.
c. At 9.31am, the 9.00am value drops out of the column and is replaced by the observation at 9.31am. This results in a constantly updating column of the last 30 minute observations and will allow me to have a realtime moving average.
I have a worksheet that has all weekday dates in column 1 and values in column 2. I want to create a 30-day moving average based on the last (non-zero) value in the column 2.
Since every month has a different amount of days, I want it to search the date that has the last value (since I don't get a chance to update it daily) and go back thirsty days from that date and give an average of all the column 2 values skipping and values that are null or zero.
