In a column I have a list with different characters in an order I don't know.
How can I find out how many different characters I have?
In the attached example the result should be 3 (There are A's, B's and C's. But no D's, no E's and so on).

First - What I need is an idea of how to just get the number of rows on a selection. For instance -
select worksheet
select paticular area (easy like a1)
get the number of rows that comes from that selection (there could be upto 5 rows that are merged by the front end, what i need is the number of rows that have been merged)
and Second -
once i have that number of rows - the next portion that I need selected could be a different colum - how do you add to columuns without knowing where you are at -
for instance - knowing that you are at a1 (a) but then having togoto columum number 4 row 1 (d1) - so i guess the question is is how I convert a number to the correct character then add the number at the end then use that compilation to select. something like
delare temp
get updated colum letter from corresponding column number
combine column letter and the row number you already know
select that in the worksheet

I want to write a macro that will check every selected cell. It should detect if there is a space after the fourth character. If there is a space, go to the next selected cell. If there is no space, add a space and go to the next selected cell.

There are three questions in Comment boxes in the file. The bottom line is that the final item name in column F can only be 50 characters long including spaces. As I am entering the information in columns B,C & D it would be great to be able to see the numbers of spaces I have left to enter characters in column H without having to hit "Return" and leave the cell.
The first question may need a Macro so excuse me that it is included in the Formula section.

I have a column of 1000 random R and B characters in A1:A1000
I would like to count how many series of single, double, triple, quad, 5's, 6's, 7's, 8's there are of any single character. i.e.
RRRBRBBRBRBBBBRRR...etc (imagine this transposed down in a column (A1:A1000)
Now the outcome below would show something similar as in the above example
Series For R
Count
1:
3
2:
0
[Code] .........
Series For B
Count
1:
2
2:
1
[Code] ....
Could this be accomplished using a formula or code?

I am trying to count the characters in a string in one cell. For example, I want to count the number of "-"'s in the cell. The version number of part numbers is always the last two characters if the value contains at least one "-". However the parts have a non standard number of characters.
444444 = 0
444-44 = 1
44-44-44 = 2
There can be 0,1 or 2 "-" in the string. I can use the substitute formula to get the root part number, but I was wondering if there is an easier way. The raw data is from our ERP system, so I multiply the value by 1 to get a number if there are no "-" for the vlookup in another formula to work....

Just a quick one this (famous last words).
I'm trying to count the number of characters (including spaces) in a cell - is there a formula for this?? =CELL I thought would do it but doesn't
PS What I'm actually trying to do is return the Surname in a cell containing a full name. I can get the first name easy enough with =left(A1,Find(" ",A1)-1 (I take no credit for that...) but can't get the surname - I thought I might be able to use =right but can't.

I have a worksheet (SHEET1) where users would enter their ID Number and then they would hit a Submit button. The submit button would then add that ID Number into another worksheet (SHEET2) in a running list of ID Numbers. But before it is submitted, I would like to check for two things:
1. ID Number must be 9 characters long (numbers and/or letters)
2. ID Number must not already exist in SHEET2
If condition 1 is not met, then just have a message box asking user to check their entry and try again.
If condition 2 is not met, then just have a message box saying "thanks" but no addition will be made to SHEET2

Ive written the macro below to sort Column A according to the length of the cell values in Ascending order. Ive done this by writing the length to Column B for each value and then sorting on column B. Surely there is a more elegant method, perhaps using arrays.
Sub SortIt()
Range("A1").Select
Do Until IsEmpty(ActiveCell)
ActiveCell.Offset(0, 1).Value = Len(ActiveCell)
ActiveCell.Offset(1, 0).Select
Loop
Columns("A:B").Sort Key1:=Range("B1"), Order1:=xlAscending
End Sub

I filtered my database in such a way that i end up with a list in which different companies are shown.
For example:
Companies (column A)
MER
MER
TYH
INT
MER
TYH
TYH
Now i want excel to count for me the number of different companies active (so in this example it would be 3, that is MER + TYH + INT). Does anyone know how to make this formula?

I need to count the number of equal cells in col D beginning at the top of the column. The counted cells must begin with a text prefix of "Category:" without the quotes.
Some but not all of the cells in col D begin with a prefix of "Category:" without the quotes, followed by a word or words following the word "Category:" See examples below. All of the terms prefixed with "Category:" in col D are in alphabetical order. I need to count the number of identical cells in col D with the "Category:" prefix.
Examples of the contents of cells in col D with the "Category:" prefix are as follows:
Category: Adversity
Category: Answers
Category: Assurance
Category: Blessings
Category: Build
Category: Change
Category: Children
Category: Choices
Cells above and below cells with a prefix of "Category:" in col D are not adjacent.Cells above and below cells with a prefix of "Category:" in col D are separated by 3 to an undermined number of rows.
I need to count the number of equal cells in col D and insert the count in col A at the last equal term. For example, col A above would have 93, 1, 1, 5, 10, 8, 3, and 12 inserted into col A.

going down are stores a, b, c, d.... what i'm filing in across is the square feet of each store and what quartr or year each store came into place. so there will either be a 0 or a number Now, I want to be able to count the number of nhew stores each quarter. how do i create a formula that just recognizes it the first time there is a number and not a zero... because i will put the square feet in subsequent quarters after it opens so i can see yearly how many square feet the store had. then also, how can create a button on the page that will say quarterly numbers and a button that is annual. so that i can hide the quarterly columns and just see an annual spreadsheet... and for the quarterly button so i can hide the annuals and just see the quarters....

I need a VBA code to find the number of characters in each cell and display the result in next column.
For Ex:
ColA:
HI
who
There
output should be
ColA,ColB
HI,2
who,3
there,5
I have shown example for 3 rows only but there are chances like it contains more than 3 rows(Dynamic rows).I tried by creating Range variable but I couldn't succeeded.

I am using a vlookup and have a problem. I am assigning a category to an item number based on the first two characters of the item number. For example item number 60123 would equal scrap because of the first two characters of 60. But the item number can begin with either a number or letter. Here is the formula I am using that works for item numbers that begin with numbers:
=VLOOKUP(VALUE(LEFT(E2,2)),Sheet3!A:B,2,FALSE)
It works fine until I reach a item number that begins with a letter, then I get the dreaded #Value error. If I take the value out of the formula then it works for the letter based number items but not for the number based item numbers.

I have been trying to determine the maximum/minimum value and additional count from a variable range which then I can use to subtract the first data of the range; I have been able to do that for a fixed range but not a variable one.
I have Column A with random positive numbers.
I have Column B with random negative numbers.
I have Column C with random numbers.
I have Column D with random numbers.
I have Column E with random 0’s and 1’s.
I have a set of 1600 cells of numerical data on each of the columns and there will be times when the random 0’s and 1’s from Column D will have appear repeatedly before changing to the opposite number, fx, I will get 7 nr. 1s before I get a 0 (zero).
I have been able to obtain the values in 2 cells within a fixed range:
If the last 8 cells in Column D have been “1” then I do:
F1=MAX(A1:A8)
G1=INDEX(C1:C8;MATCH(9.99999999999999E+307;C1:C8)) ---(Which provides the first number of the range in Column C after Column D has changed from 0 in D9 to 1 in D8)
H1=(F1-G1)
If the next 3 cells in Column D have been “0” then I do:
F9=MIN(B9:B11)
G9=INDEX(C9:C11;MATCH(9.99999999999999E+307;C9:C11)) ---(Which provides the first number of this range after Column D has changed from 1 in D12 to 0 in D11)
H9=(G1-F1)
Additional to this, the COUNT has also been challenging since I want to obtain in Column I, the COUNT of repeated 1’s from each range of 1’s in Column D; and also in Column J the same but for 0’s.
Fx:I18 (size of the range of 1’s originated from D1:D8)
J93 (size of the range of 0’s which consist to be the next range before 1’s were originated)
I12X (size of the range of 1’s which consist to be the next range before changed to 0’s)
However, that only works for a fixed range and continuous updates are made.

I work for a localizer of text heavy software. Our developers normally use a converter to pull text out of a file and insert it into the program. This text is normally input into an Excel file since it has to correspond with files/locations in the program.
Since the space on the screen of the program is limited, we often face character limits when inputting text into Excel. Now, one cell might hold up to 255 characters, and I could restrict that with data validation, but within one cell I need to restrict each line (with a hard return) to 30 characters to fit on the screen.
So for example I have a row of cells that look like: ....

I'm creating a spreadsheet (Excel 2003) in which a user enters data in several cells, each of which will permit different numbers of characters (to include spaces). For example, in the first cell, the user will be limited to 50 characters, in the second cell, the limit is 30 characters, and so on.
I found the data validation error alert feature, but want to give the user a cue that the entry is too long so they know to stop typing before moving to the next cell. If they only are alerted when they finish making the entry, they might not take the time to properly reconstruct the entry to meet the size limitation. I'm trying to make this more user-friendly.
Is there a way to set up the worksheet so the user knows that the entry is approaching the character limit? For example, each character filling an individual cell or having a display appear with a count-down for the number of characters remaining in the limit, or something similar.

I have a column that is made up of postcodes, lat, long, eastern, northern data eg: SK10 5BA, 53.291013, -2.096675, 393652, 377121
And I want to end up with a column containing the lat (53.291013) and another containing the long (-2.096675).
I have worked out to use formula's to remove a certain number of characters from the left and right of the cell, but the challenge here is the postcode at the begining of the data, can be varying in length.
know of a formula that will let me copy a certain number of characters within the cell, but counted from the right, as the eastern and northern numbers are always the same length.
