Count Characters Cells Among Others?
Jan 24, 2014
There are three questions in Comment boxes in the file. The bottom line is that the final item name in column F can only be 50 characters long including spaces. As I am entering the information in columns B,C & D it would be great to be able to see the numbers of spaces I have left to enter characters in column H without having to hit "Return" and leave the cell.
The first question may need a Macro so excuse me that it is included in the Formula section.

I have a column of 1000 random R and B characters in A1:A1000
I would like to count how many series of single, double, triple, quad, 5's, 6's, 7's, 8's there are of any single character. i.e.
RRRBRBBRBRBBBBRRR...etc (imagine this transposed down in a column (A1:A1000)
Now the outcome below would show something similar as in the above example
Series For R
Count
1:
3
2:
0
[Code] .........
Series For B
Count
1:
2
2:
1
[Code] ....
Could this be accomplished using a formula or code?

I am trying to count the characters in a string in one cell. For example, I want to count the number of "-"'s in the cell. The version number of part numbers is always the last two characters if the value contains at least one "-". However the parts have a non standard number of characters.
444444 = 0
444-44 = 1
44-44-44 = 2
There can be 0,1 or 2 "-" in the string. I can use the substitute formula to get the root part number, but I was wondering if there is an easier way. The raw data is from our ERP system, so I multiply the value by 1 to get a number if there are no "-" for the vlookup in another formula to work....

Just a quick one this (famous last words).
I'm trying to count the number of characters (including spaces) in a cell - is there a formula for this?? =CELL I thought would do it but doesn't
PS What I'm actually trying to do is return the Surname in a cell containing a full name. I can get the first name easy enough with =left(A1,Find(" ",A1)-1 (I take no credit for that...) but can't get the surname - I thought I might be able to use =right but can't.

I have a worksheet (SHEET1) where users would enter their ID Number and then they would hit a Submit button. The submit button would then add that ID Number into another worksheet (SHEET2) in a running list of ID Numbers. But before it is submitted, I would like to check for two things:
1. ID Number must be 9 characters long (numbers and/or letters)
2. ID Number must not already exist in SHEET2
If condition 1 is not met, then just have a message box asking user to check their entry and try again.
If condition 2 is not met, then just have a message box saying "thanks" but no addition will be made to SHEET2

Ive written the macro below to sort Column A according to the length of the cell values in Ascending order. Ive done this by writing the length to Column B for each value and then sorting on column B. Surely there is a more elegant method, perhaps using arrays.
Sub SortIt()
Range("A1").Select
Do Until IsEmpty(ActiveCell)
ActiveCell.Offset(0, 1).Value = Len(ActiveCell)
ActiveCell.Offset(1, 0).Select
Loop
Columns("A:B").Sort Key1:=Range("B1"), Order1:=xlAscending
End Sub

I want to use the SumIf function to sum cells when other cells begin with certain characters.
I've toyed with a few ideas of how this could work, but i don't know how to specify that the cells need to begin with certain characters. The cells that would be the criteria and the ones that would be summed come out of an Oracle database (and i have no control over the way they're pulled out - yet) so the beginning characters are connected to extremely unique information, so i dont want that to be included in the if part, for obvious reasons.

I need to count the number of equal cells in col D beginning at the top of the column. The counted cells must begin with a text prefix of "Category:" without the quotes.
Some but not all of the cells in col D begin with a prefix of "Category:" without the quotes, followed by a word or words following the word "Category:" See examples below. All of the terms prefixed with "Category:" in col D are in alphabetical order. I need to count the number of identical cells in col D with the "Category:" prefix.
Examples of the contents of cells in col D with the "Category:" prefix are as follows:
Category: Adversity
Category: Answers
Category: Assurance
Category: Blessings
Category: Build
Category: Change
Category: Children
Category: Choices
Cells above and below cells with a prefix of "Category:" in col D are not adjacent.Cells above and below cells with a prefix of "Category:" in col D are separated by 3 to an undermined number of rows.
I need to count the number of equal cells in col D and insert the count in col A at the last equal term. For example, col A above would have 93, 1, 1, 5, 10, 8, 3, and 12 inserted into col A.

I believe I need a loop code to do what I need, because none of the functions I've tried have worked. I want to start at B2 and go down the column until I come to a YES. When I find a YES, I want to know the number of NOs that preceded it. Then I want to go from that YES(#1) to the next YES(#2) and count the number of NOs between YES(#1) and YES(#2) and so forth, until I run out of rows. For example, in C5, the answer is 2, because there are 2 NOs between YES#1 and YES#2 in coulmn B, and a 1 in C7, because there is 1 NO between YES(#2) and YES(#3) in column B.

I have some text that I need to format, at the moment it looks like this:
[note name="Person A" label="0"[Person A's information]/note]
[note name="Person B" label="0"[Person B's information]/note]
etc
I would like to extract the Name (Person A) and the actual note itself (Person A's information) into two columns. I tried using "Text to Columns" as I have in the past, but there is a problem. Many of the information fields contain hundreds of characters, with the largest being ~2500 characters. The text to columns works does its job but cuts out a lot of data (anything over 255 characters).
I'm using MS Excel 2000
The text contained HTML codes, so they have not appeared correctly I have replaced with []

I have recently purchased a new GPS for my fishing boat. I am trying to transfer my old coordinates from one unit to the other. I am using a .csv file to achieve this. Can some kind please let me know (and possibly tell me) if there is way to insert characters and spaces in to multiple cells. I have over 800 individual coordinates to modify to the new gps and this would take a long time to achieve individually.
I need to replace this: 12.34.567 to this: 12 34.567 N
and this: -1.23456 to this: 001 23.456 W

Column A in Excel has loads of numbers all in this format 971-417. I need to have each of those two numbers in a separate cell from each other(and without the hyphen of course).
Column A Needs to be: Column A Column B
971-417 971 417
In short, I'm looking for a quick way to put each number in its own cell for hundreds of rows. Are there formulas I can use to do this or does it have to be done slowly, one at a time, stripping the information from one cell to another?

I am trying to write a macro that will go through each cell in a column with the following format "| 12- 4" or "| 60-11" and will remove the first to character "| ".
There numbers are lengths, the first being feet the second inches. I would like to achieve in a separate column the numerical length (with decimals) multiplied by 1%. My code is as follows I just need help on the conversion.
Sub newLength()
Dim LR, lrow As Integer
Dim feet, inches, Line As Double
LR = Range("B65536").End(xlUp).Offset(1, 0).Row
For lrow = LR To 2 Step -1
If Cells(lrow, "D") <> Cells(lrow - 1, "D") Then
Rows(lrow).Insert Shift:=xlDown
End If
feet = Left(Cells(lrow, "E").Value, 4)
inches = Right(Cells(lrow, "E").Value, 2) / 12 'I need to debug this line, but I suspect there is more I need to do.
Cells(lrow, "F") = feet + inches
Next lrow
End Sub
