Excel 2003 :: Correct Approach For Number Format?
Feb 14, 2012
I have several sources of information for client files. the number format includes a reference number and a month, eg 123/11, 456/02. In some cases, the numbers may be presented including the company initials, eg ABC/00123/11. I want to make sure all numbers on all sources are the same as I am using Vlookup and this reference no to copy information from one source to another. Sometimes when I change the format Excel sees this as a date, eg 11/11 is 11-Nov, and in some cases Excel sees a fraction, eg 123/11 is 123 11ths or 123 divided by 11.
I can easily take out the reference no with a find and replace FIND ABC/ replace with . But this often results in a number with leading zeroes, eg ABC/0123/06 will leave 0123/06.
I am using Excel 2003.

* I have a complex Excel workbook with several worksheets.
* The first worksheet is for raw data, which consists of a single string of data, separated by spaces, to be uploaded to a mainframe. There is no consistent pattern of length of data or strings in between pieces of data, which can vary widely. An example of the data would be something like this:
XXXXX YYYYY NN XXXXXXX
* For testing purposes, I need to come up with a way to parse the data for easier viewing. The current approach is this:
* Take the string and divide it up into individual cells by using the MID function. In the above approach, this would split the data into four (4) different cells.
This is going to be a very complex workbook with data strings that can have 20+ elements in them, and have lots of separate records, etc. While this way should work (if everything is entered perfectly and no data structures ever change, etc.),

I am trying to date and time stamp a certain cell. This cell is going to be compared to another cell in another sheet (also date and time) so that I can track deadlines being met.
I am using the following code to stamp the cell:
VB:
Range("F26").NumberFormat = "[$-409]m/d/yy h:mm AM/PM;@".Value = Now()
Even with the number format, the cell is not stamped as a number. As a result I get #value errors when I take the difference between the stamped cell and the cell with the preset deadlines.

I have a querytable running on my sql database. In the query I have a trimleft function because the numbers are stored with several proceeding blank spaces. When I execute the query through my macro, everything works fine, except I can't average or sum the results. They can be multiplied, divided, etc, but not averaged or summed (they just show as zero on summing, which makes the average DIV/0). The really strange part is that if I select a number and go to the formula bar and hit delete at the beginning of the number (which actually deletes nothing), the number is suddenly capable of actually performing as a number. I assume this has something to do with how the querytable is returning my results, but does anyone have an idea for a workaround for this issue?

I have a spreadsheet with five cells (L3 - L7) that have dates entered into them in the format of 9/9/2013, 9/10/2013, 10/20/2013, 10/21/2013, 10/22/2013. In another cell, cell n2, I have the formula:
=IF(L2=0,"",IF(L2=1,L3,IF(L2=2,CONCATENATE(L3,L4),IF(L2=3,CONCATENATE(L3,L4,L5),IF(L2=4,CONCATENATE(L3,L4,L5,L6),IF(L2=5,CONCATENAT E(L3,L4,L5,L6,L7)))))))
In cell n2 I get: 41526415274156741568481569 This is the excel number for the above dates, but I need it to look like:
Sep. 9 - 10, 2013, Oct. 20 - 22, 2013
I also need it to be able to isolate single dates for example if the date in cell l5 was 10/5/2013 instead of 10/20/2013 then I would want n2 to look like Sep. 9 - 10, 2013, Oct. 5, 2013, Oct. 21 - 22, 2013. but my formula currently only changes that number in the string from 41567 to 41552.
The reason I need this is because this information is part of a identifier and also maybe used in reports, the people reading the reports won't know this long number is actually dates and won't be able to read them if they did.
Also the cells L3 - L7 data depends on cell l2, 1 = one date entered into cell l3, 2 = two dates, one in cell l3, the next in cell l4, and so on for up to five total days that may or may not be consecutive. Also, it seems to work as is, but only for one day.

We receive about 20 sales files of several hundred lines of data each day from various agencies. I want to create a macro / VBA code which checks that the data submitted is correct so that we can upload it into our database without import errors and / or having to manually check each line of data.
I envisage something like an output report:
#####################
149 entries
Column A - Date - OK
Column B - Customer_Phone - Errors (Should be 11 digits)
Row 21 - Customer_Phone - Error (Not 11 digits)
Row 108 - Customer_Phone - Error (Contains letters)
Column C - Outcome - OK
Please correct and re-check.

I finally found a program that can out put the amounts from a schedule k-1 form. Now comes the hard part, adding logical formulas.
Some of the line items either have an amount to or not. What the pdf2xl program does is output where if the line item has an amount to it, it would add the amount right below the line item. If it doesn't have an amount, it would just add the next line item underneath. Question is what is a good approach to get this to automate, so if line items have an amount, then that amount is known to be line item cell above. Here comes the tricky part as well, some line items have alphabets to them, so a particular line item say 11 would have A-F or line 13 would have A-W. What is a good way to have the line item output the line item + alphabet?
Column A & C = Line Item
Column B & D = Alphabet

I enter in numbers, eg: 1, 2, 10, 24, 100, 1000 in a consecqutive cell range
They display as: 0.01, 0.02, 0.1, 0.24, 1, 10. Default cell format is general. If I change cell format to Number (with default display of 2 decimal points) it displays: 0.01, 0.02, 0.10, 0.24, 1.00, 10.00. If I also specify no decimal points, it displays: 0,0,0,0,1,10
The only way I can get the numbers I enter to display (and store) as 1,2,10,24, 100, 1000 is to change cell format to text and THEN retype th numbers into the cells. But, then it creates the green error comment in top left of each cell.

I have a requirement where I want my list should auto increment with number only.
For example: I want to fill below text in cell and when I drag the cell( Along the column A) and fill the rows downward it should automaticallly incremented.
Data in one cell say (A1) is like 001_TCO_CM, now I want to drag data present in cell A1 and wants data in cell A2, A3, A4 etc... it should get increment like
A2 = 002_TCO_CM
A3 = 003_TCO_CM
A4 = 004_TCO_CM
and so on...any method or way present in Excel 2003 so that my series should get auto filled.

I'm working with three large data sets covering a month of data in 5 minute intervals. There is a single date and time column which I am using some custom formats to list Time in 12 hour format, AM or PM and Day of the week.
Based upon the various analysis scenarios, adding some Autofilter columns is meeting most of my needs. One issue I am having is that I can filter on a single day using the built in list that Autofilter provides. But I have been asked to look at weekend vs weekday.
Since Excel 2003 only offers two filter criteria, I thought I could use a custom filter with Saturday and Sunday as include or exclude criteria. But, what I am findings is that while the Autofilter shows each day in the dropdown, certain attempts to use them within the custom autofilter do not work.
For example, equals Saturday and equals Sunday correctly returns only weekend data. However, if I try changing both to Does not equals, the result is that no data is filtered.Some of my research indicates that the problem is that the date information being presented as days of the week would need to be text strings . This seems to shed some light on the issue as any attempts at using wildcards fail.

I have been struggling to get dates to remain in a consistent format within my Excel 2003 worksheets. I would like to work out how to keep them permanently in the "dd/mm/yyy" format. I have tried several formatting options. The current method I will explain below:
I have several forms into which the 'date' is automatically entered using the - Format(Date, "dd/mm/yyyy") code. This is then saved into cells on a worksheet using the code
ws.Cells(iRow, 1).NumberFormat = "dd/mm/yyyy"
ws.Cells(iRow, 1).Value = CDate(Me.Date1.Caption)
At this point if I do a search for a date, lets say 23/03/2012 I can retrieve it and everything related to it - all seems fine (also all dates are visually in the correct format in my cells etc).
The problem arises when I exit Excel and save the workbook. When I go back into the workbook at a later time and try and search for the same date it won't work. Although the dates in the cells still read for example 23/03/2012, the search requires me to now use the format 03/23/2012 to retrieve the information (It seems like in the background the date has reverted to the US date format upon saving and yet visually it is still how I've set it up).

I am looking to standardise data entry for a cell, so that it appears as such: 2011/031T/0003
Data may be entered as 11/031T/03 and is not always consistent.
I am hoping that a custom cell format will do the trick, to keep it simple however the combinations that I have tried have not worked.
This format needs to be Excel 2003 friendly.

Excel 2003 / WinXP. I have a list object with 5 columns, A - E, and all cells have a border round them. I need a macro which will:
1. insert a row below the current row (whatever cell happens to be selected)
2. then remove the left hand border of the cell in column B in the new row,
3. then select the adjacent cell in column C in the new row ready for data entry.
Obviously I cannot specify any absolute addresses in the code, and this is where all my attempts to record a suitable macro fall down.

Is there a way to disable the Convert button on the File menu and also to limit the Save As file types? I have a workbook that I maintain in Office 2003 that gets filled out by customers and returned. When a user with a newer version of Excel converts the file, it doesn't function properly when I go open it. I believe the conversion issue has to do with Active X Controls, but I'm using them to do some things that won't work with Forms Controls, so replacing them would be a last resort. Also, upgrading Office isn't an option at this point.

I have a VBA subroutine that builds a list of dates in an array and then copies this to the worksheet using worksheetfunction.transpose. The array is two dimensional and therefore uses the variant data type.
This works fine in Excel 2002. In Excel 2003 the array is fine until the Transpose function is used, at this point they are changed from dd/mm/yyyy to mm/dd/yyyy. This means that some dates are changed (eg: 01/Mar/2008 becomes 03/Jan/2008) and some are written as strings (eg: 17/Mar/2008 becomes the string "17/03/2008" and cannot be operated on as a date).
I'm aware that there was a hotfix to deal with a similar issue regarding recalculation but this is on Excel 2003 SP3 which should already have that hotfix in place.
I have reduced my code down to a basic demonstration showing the problem. This assumes the worksheet contains some dates in "A2:A32". I have also attached the workbook containing this code.
VB:
Private Sub CommandButton1_Click()
Dim a() As Variant, c As Integer
Redim a(1 To 31)
For c = 1 To 31
a(c) = Cells(1 + c, 1)
Next c
Range("D2:D32") = WorksheetFunction.Transpose(a)
End Sub
I have fixed this problem by looping through each element of the array and writing them individually in to cells but this is far slower so I'd like to know if there is a better solution than that.

I have an Excel 2010 spreadsheet where the default number format keeps switching to the date format. I keep switching it back and it'll stay as a number format for a time, but then it'll switch back. This is also the case for any new worksheets in that one spreadsheet.
This only happens with this one file - everything else behaves according to my regional settings or to how the file had been previously formatted.

If I have 48X144X68 in J10, I need 144.
I tried:
=MID(J10,FIND("X",J10,2)+1,3) which works, but when a cell has 65X50X68, then I get 50X where I only want 50.
The numbers can vary in size (i.e., 1 to 5 digits) but always separated by an X or some letter.

I am using excel 2003. My sheet contains Times in column A and numbers in column B. I want to be able to count how many of those rows fall into time periods. Such as how many are from 8:00-9:00 AM. I do have the time column formatted as Time.
Ex:
A1: 3:40 PM
A2: 8:20 AM
A3: 8:55 AM
A4: 10:23 AM
etc.
B1: 23
B2: 34
B3: 12
B4: 35
etc.
So I want to be able to pull that between 8 and 9 AM there are 2 records.
The second part would be (in another cell) to pull the SUM of the numbers that correspond to the previous question. In the previous example it would be the SUM of all corresponding cells (Column B) that fall within the 8 and 9 AM range. Which would be 46 in this example.

From an Excel 2003 workbook I generate some product labels. Each label has a 5 digit job number and a quantity that are passed to variables. If the quantity is 1, then I have no problems in printing my label. My problem is where the quantity is greater than 1. If a job has more than 1 item (can be up to 40 or 50) I need to add a series of letter (or letters) to the end of the job number.
For example:
Job number 12345
qty 1
number on label 12345
Job number 12346
qty 4
numbers on labels 12346A, 12346B, 12346C, 1234D

Friday=5
Saturday=0

Wednesday=7.5
Thursday=0 (I have got a value return of 7.5)
Friday=5
Saturday=0 (I have got a value return of 5)
Sunday=0 (I have got a value return of 5)
I need to work out averages for cells higher than zeros, in other words, I need to ignore those.
Also say I have got an average of 5 by Tuesday and no number yet for the rest of the week, I still get an average of 5 for all days left which I do not want.

I would also like to hide the annoying #DIV/0! error.

I need a formula that returns the Nth number from a single column that contains a small number of values within a span of 1000 cells. E.g., within 1000 cells there are 36 with numbers and the remaining cells are blank. I need to obtain the first occurrence of a number in the column, then the second, third... to the thirty-sixth. The end result would be a column with 36 numbers with no blanks in between without loosing the correct order of the numbers.
I have excel 2003 and have been tooling around with the index and lookup functions with no success.
