Excel 2013 :: Saving Large Multiple Worksheet File

Aug 11, 2014

I have an Excel file that's updated monthly. when it does save its around 16mb and can take up to 12 hours to save, and sometimes just doesn't.

I have tried saving as binary, I have made sure exact size of area to be saved is required, I have tried save with no calculations.

Basically the only reason I need to save it is so that another analysis spreadsheet can pull data from it. The file is heavily formatted, charts, vlookup tables etc, none of which is needed when analysis spreadsheet links to it.

Excel 2013 :: Saving / Opening Workbook With Multiple Windows

Aug 7, 2013

With excel 2013 you're now able to open multiple windows or views of the same workbook. However when a workbook is saved with multiple windows open, the next user to open the spreadsheet will also open it with multiple windows. Which can be very annoying when most people work off of one window vs. multiple. Is there a way to disable saving the multiple windows or a macro to force open excel in 1 window?

I have a macro enabled spreadsheet and I need to save one sheet into a new file that is in xls format. I can do that --- is there anyway to suppress the Compatibility Checker box to make it that much easier?

The new file will not have macros as will just be a data in rows and columns so compatibility. Interesting is the compatibility checker box says there are links to the original spreadsheet, but I can't find them in the connections menu.

Excel 2013 :: Opening Large (1-3gb) XML Files

Sep 9, 2013

I received a few 1-3gb xml files from the government and I would like to open them in an Excel format. I have tried opening them using Excel 2013 (both as an xml table and as a read only workbook) with a machine running 8gb RAM and a 3.4 ghz i5 processor. I left it running overnight but Excel continues to "not respond". The file is intended to display thousands of line items with around 40-50 columns of data. For previous (and much smaller) similar files, the saved workbook is a manageable file. The only hurdle here is getting these open.

Saving Multiple Workbooks At One Time/file As A Text File

Mar 16, 2007

found the following code which works for 1 workbook at a time. I am trying to save 7 workbooks at 1 time. Is it possible?

Sub SaveAsCell()
Dim strName As String

On Error Goto InvalidName
strName = Sheet1. Range("V77")
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs strName

It will work on the first sheet but none after that. I need to have each workbook saved with the value in cell V77. Also if that is possible, is it possible to change where the file is saved as well?

Right now I have a master workbook that will open the 7 other workbooks, paste data onto several pages in each workbook. I would like the macro to save the workbooks. The workbooks are named: 02 Tuesday, 03 Wednesday, 04 Thursday, 05 Friday, 06 Saturday, 07 Sunday, 08 Monday.

I thought there was a checkbox allowing you to "save selected" only, but I'm either dreaming, or it was in a previous version of Excel (I know use Excel 2000).

Excel 2013 :: Truncating File Names?

Jan 27, 2014

We have had a few instances where Excel 2013 is truncating a filename when saving for example "MF Not Settled - Dec 13 Rental A.." the filename includes additional characters than this but has replaced them with .., I initially thought it could be a file path length issue but the files in question the total length is less than 150 characters including the server name.

This is also happening with links inside excel files to different tabs in the same workbook and well as macro names causing them to have to be ran manually as it has truncated the name to .. at the end.

find some examples below:

Full filename: MF Jan 2014 vols Smart churn sensitivity
Truncated filename: MF Jan 2014 vols Smart churn...

Also if you try to link to the truncated workbook whilst open it displays the formula as:

='[MF Jan 2014 vols Smart churn...sitivity.xlsm]Input c!$E$13

My work around is to save the file to another folder, without closing it, and then it works fine. However, in doing this it will try to save as the truncated name, so I first have to select the correct name of the file in the existing folder, before saving to a separate folder. However, if the file is closed, and then reopened the problem returns.

Excel 2013 :: Cannot Import Data Into ASP File

Feb 5, 2014

I am using Excel 2013, and I am following the example here: VBScript Scripting Techniques: Read Excel files without using Excel that reads in Excel data as an ADO record set to a classic ASP file using VBScript. I am not able to import all the Excel data successfully, and I need to know what I'm doing wrong. Note that in all these samples cell A1 is the heading text "Column1" and the main data starts on cell A2 (consistent with the example code).

When my source Excel data looks like the following:

Code:
Column1
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
X
9
10

It imports everything OK. However, if I move the X to the next row:

Code:
Column1
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
X
10
...the "X" cell gets imported as an empty string. So the imported array looks like this:

Code:
arrSheet[0][0]: Column1
arrSheet[1][0]: 1
arrSheet[2][0]: 2
arrSheet[3][0]: 3

[Code] ....

But if I add another X to an earlier row in the source worksheet, like so:

Code:
Column1
1
2
3
4
5
X
7
8
X
10
...this gets imported OK.

Saving A Worksheet As A Asterisk Delimited Text File?

Sep 19, 2013

I am trying to save a worksheet as a txt file. The worksheet has a range of data with a variable amount of rows in column A only. It generally will look like:

A*B*C
A*B*C*D*E*F*G*H*I*J
A*B*C*D*E*F*G*H*I*J
A*B*C*D*E*F*G*H*I*J

where each row of data is in a single cell.Whenever I save it, however, it adds extra tab deliminations in each row after the data, and it adds rows with no data (sometimes just 1, sometimes many).

I am positive that no cells in columns B-n have data in them (even just a space) and no rows after the last intended have data.

Why are these extra rows and columns being inserted? How can I save a txt file that literally has no other spaces or rows or deliminations other than what's intended?

So Large File That Excel Cannot Open It...

May 4, 2009

I have a file that became too big due to phantom bloat, unused range saved by Excel and all that kind of reasons. Thank to previous posts on that board tackling that issue, I was able to find how to proceed to reduce the file back to its normal size.

But I did so in a beta file (test file). The real file has become so big (103MB!) that Excel cannot even open it anymore! The file contains archive info that we do not have anywhere else.

Is there anyway then to open the file or to reduce its size without opening it (through magics...)? I just honestly don't know how to retrieve that info before deleting that file.

Excel 2013 :: Worksheet Freeze With Application?

May 28, 2014

I encountered a strange anomaly where a worksheet "freezes" when Application.DisplayFormulaBar = False. I can only replicate this in Excel 2013. Excel 2010, for example, works perfectly well, and as expected.

[Code].....

To replicate the anomaly (Excel 2013 only):

1. In a new workbook, insert an ActiveX command button on "Sheet1", no code required.

2. Run the following code

[Code] .....

3. Click on the command button.

4. Now click on any cell and try to enter a value.

Is your screen "frozen"? If so, go to another sheet, return to Sheet1 and try again. Does it work?

Here's an alternative code for MyTest() that causes no problems. Can spot the difference? Is there a reasonable explanation?

[Code] ....

Even more curious, call the following MyTest3 on Workbook_Open() and the workbook behaves. Run MyTest3 again and the screen starts freezing(!)

[Code] .....

Excel 2013 :: Playing WAV File Based On Cell Value Change

Aug 6, 2014

I have a spreadsheet with a database query attached (refreshing every 60 seconds) showing a stock summary by product.

I need the spreadsheet to play a .WAV file when values change. i.e.;

If cell A1 <6, play sound1.wav
If cell A2 <6, play sound1.wav
If cell A3 <6, play sound2.wav
If cell A4 <6, play sound2.wav

This may need to be repeated several times based on certain criteria. I have a total of about 30 cells which I need to be looked at individually (not a sum of) and to play the relevant sound.

I have seen different people try to tackle this in different ways. The ideal way would be creating alarms in VBA and triggering them using a formula, but I cannot get these to work in Excel 2010 or 2013.

I click on Macros (F8), it's not listed there, but"RoundedRectangle5_click" is, so I click on it, edit it to match the one I'm searching. Nope, nothing. CREATE button is highlighted.

Excel 2013 :: Macro That Can Reference Worksheet It Has Created

Jul 4, 2014

I am completely new to Macro's and VB and the macro below has been generated using the "Record Macro" function in Excel 2013 with a couple of very minor modifications based on some research I have done (hyperlink & input box). My ultimate goal is to make a copy of my "TEMPLATE", which is hidden and the copy could have a variety of names, then create an entry in my "SUMMARY" table that references cells on the newly created sheet. The new entry on the SUMMARY page should be entered in the next available row ... at the moment I need to make sure I have my cursor in the right place before I run the macro. I also want the first cell in the new "SUMMARY" row to create a hyperlink to the newly created worksheet.

The macro does what I need it to do, as long as I name the new sheet "Test", what I would like is for the Macro to recognise the name of the new worksheet and create links to that name. The rows and columns in each new sheet will remain the same, hence the R##C## part will always work.

The "SUMMARY" and "TEMPLATE" worksheet names will not (ever) change.

Excel 2013 :: Formatting Of Entire Worksheet Changes Unexpectedly

Jan 20, 2014

In Excel 2013 x64 (EN; CZ locale) I have this funny bug. I work on a large vba project and sometimes when I open it, every cell in every workbook that had default formatting now has this numberformat (shown as "Accounting")

"_-* #,##0.00 [$Kč-405]_-;-* #,##0.00 [$Kč-405]_-;_-* ""-""?? [$Kč-405]_-;_-@_-"

its seems that this formatting is assigned to styles --> Normal and it just messes up everything (pivots, slicers...) and cannot(!) be undone.

I have made some routines to check for this error on workbook.open and workbook.close and I also have file versioning. I check for the error regularly on every worksheet change, but it never comes up, nor does it whenever I close the workbook, so Im having hard time detecting when it occurs.

Sometimes when I try to open the workbook its just all messed up. When I go trough the versions, couple of them back still has the error which means it was already saved with it.

All I could figure out so far is that it sometimes happens when I try to copy some cell and paste it elsewhere (but later it works fine)

I'm 99.9% sure that my code is not causing it by accident or purpose. Now I just found the problem on different workbook that might have been opened at the same time. If you're interested, have a look here [URL] ......

Excel 2013 :: Populate First Worksheet From Data Stored In Several Other Worksheets?

Feb 19, 2014

I have made a Rota of sorts using Excel 2013 Desktop Edition for my charities volunteers (and stored it as a shared file via office 365 server that they can download and edit) and this rota is populated by our volunteers manually. Each day our controller needs to check the file to see who is on duty at that time.

How the Rota is populated.(the bit i managed to do myself)

The volunteer (Person A in this example) would open the excel file and go to the month they wish to choose a shift for (ref worksheet: FEB in this example). They would then pick a shift that suits them and click on the cell (ref: F32) that shows a vehicle available, then from the drop down list they select their name and then save and close the sheet.

Rather than our volunteer controller going through the sheet for the current month (ref worksheet: Sheets JAN to DEC) I would like them to use the first sheet in the workbook (ref worksheet: DC Info Page) to get an instant view of which volunteer is currently on shift.

My current problem

I don’t know how to make the excel file do the following

Search sheets JAN to DEC (ref cells: C4:I58 on each sheet) inclusive for the cell that contains today's (current actual) dateCopy the 8 (eight) cells below the cell that contains today's datePaste the copied cells in to the relative cells (ref: C8 to C15) in sheet one (ref worksheet: DC Info page)

I would also like this to be done automatically so the controller does not have to click on anything after they open the file. But if it needs a button to process the request, one could be added to the worksheet (ref: DC Info Page)

Excel 2013 :: File Size Grows When Using Macro To Copy / Paste To New Workbook

May 9, 2014

I'm using Excel 2013 on Windows 7.

I have an Excel file which has a macro that sucks in data from a number of separate files (two Excel, a varying number of csv). The macro grabs all the individual files and loads them into one of three worksheets with some formatting, sorting, and structuring on the way. All good so far.

I then need to take two of the worksheets and copy them to a new Workbook which I can send out to some users. So I use the Workbooks.Add method, and use the Selection.Copy on just the data (UsedRange.Rows/Columns.Count to ensure it is only the data) and Selection.PasteSpecial with the xlPasteColumnWidths, xlPasteValues, and xlPasteFormats options to copy the data over. None of the data is filtered. Just straight data.

I would expect the newly added workbook to be smaller than the one with the macros because the one with the macros has two extra sheets that I don't transfer, and the sheets I do transfer are identical.

And that's where it gets weird. The file with the macros and more data is 18.7Mb, but the new one with only two sheets is 24.8Mb. One is .xlsm and the other is .xlsx (because it has no macros).

I've tried opening the new workbook and saving as .xlsm (no material difference to the size) and as .xls (it got even bigger). I've opened the new workbook, gone to the end of the data and deleted all the blank rows and columns, but no effect (because the rows are already empty).

Why would the file with less in it be so much bigger (or bigger at all)?

Excel Only Shows Small Fraction Of Rows In Large File?

Jun 26, 2013

I have a file that has been produced using Statistica software. The file is supposed to have around one million rows, and when exported to Excel the file is about 30 MB. When I open the .xlsx file in Excel 2010 only two pages of data appear. The rows also have weird numbering. The first square of the A column is A1. The second is A3833, the third is A6789, then A8161, then A8162, then A8163, then A8164, then A18070.

The scroll button to the left of the screen is long, as if the document was only two pages long. When the scroll button is click-and-dragged a small beige square appears with a row number. This small square seems to be aware that not all rows are shown as it shows many more rows than are visible to me.

Saving User Inputted Data From A Worksheet To Another Worksheet And Saving It

Jan 7, 2009

I have created a form in a worksheet which I have added questions too and then locked all cells except the ones where I want the answers in.

I have then added a button to the bottom of the sheet called "Print and Save". This work sheet is called "form"

On a second sheet called "database", I have all the titles of the questions running from a -> k and nother else.

What I want to happen is the user input the information on "form" into the boxes available. Once they have completed the questions, I want them to be able to click on "Print and Save" so that firstly the page "form" prints, and then for all of the answers to be saved in "database" below the titles for each question.

I have had a play, but just don't know where to start. Also, once there is a row of questions below the titles, I don't want it to overwrite information already there, it needs to go onto the next empty row available.

Attached is my excel file.

You will see in the code that I have the code for printing.. I just found this on the net and it seems to work fine for me.
