Excel 2013 :: Updating Links To Separate Workbooks

Sep 12, 2013

I'm linking some data from 2 workbooks in the same folder (using excel 2013)

I have a main rota that works great, called "Main Rota.xlsm" I then have a separate basic file called Email Rota.xlsx without all of the bells and whistles of the Main Rota, purley made to email out to staff.

I store both files in the same folder "Site Rota" and it works fine.... until I rename the folder or move the folder to my laptop.

The link in the Email Rota looks like so to start (calling cell A3 from the Main Rota) ='[Main Rota.xlsm]Planning Rota'!A3

As I said it works fine until I move the folder onto my laptop the link then changes to

='D:DesktopSite Rota[Main Rota.xlsm]Planning Rota'!A3

And I have to keep updating the link, I have read online that it isn't supposed to work like this and its supposed to read the file "cleverly" in the same folder ?

I would ideally like to keep both files in the same folder and to update from visa versa without having to update the links if I move it from PC to laptop with I do daily .

Excel 2013 :: VBA Copy Many Separate Rows Into First Empty Column?

Oct 30, 2013

I'm back working on my estimate sheet again and hit another roadblock. I have a series of rows all separated by multiple spaces and would like to copy every one to the first empty column on a separate page sequentially until a certain condition is met (first time row starts with zero in column U, in this pic second row down would end routine).

The first column here is U on sheet "Partitions & Woodwork" so since this first row doesn't start with a zero, U10 - BC10 would need to be copied and pasted transposed into the first open column on sheet "Rebirth" (2nd pic below).

U V W X Y Z

It would be pasted transposed here from B2 downwards on sheet named "Rebirth". The next row that didn't start with zero would be pasted transposed starting at c2 and so on until the first time a row beginning at column U on sheet "Partitions & Woodwork" began with a zero (0).

The number of spaces between rows being copied varies on the partitions & woodwork sheet but the columns (U - BC) are a constant every time a row needs to be copied.

Excel 2013 :: Populate First Worksheet From Data Stored In Several Other Worksheets?

Feb 19, 2014

I have made a Rota of sorts using Excel 2013 Desktop Edition for my charities volunteers (and stored it as a shared file via office 365 server that they can download and edit) and this rota is populated by our volunteers manually. Each day our controller needs to check the file to see who is on duty at that time.

How the Rota is populated.(the bit i managed to do myself)

The volunteer (Person A in this example) would open the excel file and go to the month they wish to choose a shift for (ref worksheet: FEB in this example). They would then pick a shift that suits them and click on the cell (ref: F32) that shows a vehicle available, then from the drop down list they select their name and then save and close the sheet.

Rather than our volunteer controller going through the sheet for the current month (ref worksheet: Sheets JAN to DEC) I would like them to use the first sheet in the workbook (ref worksheet: DC Info Page) to get an instant view of which volunteer is currently on shift.

My current problem

I don’t know how to make the excel file do the following

Search sheets JAN to DEC (ref cells: C4:I58 on each sheet) inclusive for the cell that contains today's (current actual) dateCopy the 8 (eight) cells below the cell that contains today's datePaste the copied cells in to the relative cells (ref: C8 to C15) in sheet one (ref worksheet: DC Info page)

I would also like this to be done automatically so the controller does not have to click on anything after they open the file. But if it needs a button to process the request, one could be added to the worksheet (ref: DC Info Page)

Excel Save As Should Default File Save Type To XLSX Using VBA

Aug 21, 2012

What I am trying to do is that I have an excel file with macros and it is a read-only file. In order for the user to save, I want them to only be able to save as a .xlsx file as it disables all macros. If for whatever reason, the user wants to save the file as another .xlsm file, they should be allowed but before they save, a "are you sure you want to save as .xlsm?" message should pop up.

All the options in the save as box should still be available in case they want to save in that particular format. Just that the .xlsx should be the default.

Excel 2013 :: Truncating File Names?

Jan 27, 2014

We have had a few instances where Excel 2013 is truncating a filename when saving for example "MF Not Settled - Dec 13 Rental A.." the filename includes additional characters than this but has replaced them with .., I initially thought it could be a file path length issue but the files in question the total length is less than 150 characters including the server name.

This is also happening with links inside excel files to different tabs in the same workbook and well as macro names causing them to have to be ran manually as it has truncated the name to .. at the end.

find some examples below:

Full filename: MF Jan 2014 vols Smart churn sensitivity
Truncated filename: MF Jan 2014 vols Smart churn...

Also if you try to link to the truncated workbook whilst open it displays the formula as:

='[MF Jan 2014 vols Smart churn...sitivity.xlsm]Input c!$E$13

My work around is to save the file to another folder, without closing it, and then it works fine. However, in doing this it will try to save as the truncated name, so I first have to select the correct name of the file in the existing folder, before saving to a separate folder. However, if the file is closed, and then reopened the problem returns.

Excel 2013 :: Cannot Import Data Into ASP File

Feb 5, 2014

I am using Excel 2013, and I am following the example here: VBScript Scripting Techniques: Read Excel files without using Excel that reads in Excel data as an ADO record set to a classic ASP file using VBScript. I am not able to import all the Excel data successfully, and I need to know what I'm doing wrong. Note that in all these samples cell A1 is the heading text "Column1" and the main data starts on cell A2 (consistent with the example code).

When my source Excel data looks like the following:

Code:
Column1
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
X
9
10

It imports everything OK. However, if I move the X to the next row:

Code:
Column1
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
X
10
...the "X" cell gets imported as an empty string. So the imported array looks like this:

Code:
arrSheet[0][0]: Column1
arrSheet[1][0]: 1
arrSheet[2][0]: 2
arrSheet[3][0]: 3

[Code] ....

But if I add another X to an earlier row in the source worksheet, like so:

Code:
Column1
1
2
3
4
5
X
7
8
X
10
...this gets imported OK.

Excel 2013 :: Playing WAV File Based On Cell Value Change

Aug 6, 2014

I have a spreadsheet with a database query attached (refreshing every 60 seconds) showing a stock summary by product.

I need the spreadsheet to play a .WAV file when values change. i.e.;

If cell A1 <6, play sound1.wav
If cell A2 <6, play sound1.wav
If cell A3 <6, play sound2.wav
If cell A4 <6, play sound2.wav

This may need to be repeated several times based on certain criteria. I have a total of about 30 cells which I need to be looked at individually (not a sum of) and to play the relevant sound.

I have seen different people try to tackle this in different ways. The ideal way would be creating alarms in VBA and triggering them using a formula, but I cannot get these to work in Excel 2010 or 2013.

Excel 2013 :: Can't Find Macro In Inherited File - How To Search In VBA

So there's a macro "RoundedRectangle4_click" that's assigned to a box on a worksheet. It's a simple macro, I assume. it just takes the user to the 'Main Sheet' tab. I know the name b/c I rightclicked on the box to get the Macro Assigned.

I click on Macros (F8), it's not listed there, but"RoundedRectangle5_click" is, so I click on it, edit it to match the one I'm searching. Nope, nothing. CREATE button is highlighted.

I've gone to VBA (AltF11) to try to find it among the 25+ worksheets, forms & modules - haven't found it yet.

Excel 2013 :: File Size Grows When Using Macro To Copy / Paste To New Workbook

May 9, 2014

I'm using Excel 2013 on Windows 7.

I have an Excel file which has a macro that sucks in data from a number of separate files (two Excel, a varying number of csv). The macro grabs all the individual files and loads them into one of three worksheets with some formatting, sorting, and structuring on the way. All good so far.

I then need to take two of the worksheets and copy them to a new Workbook which I can send out to some users. So I use the Workbooks.Add method, and use the Selection.Copy on just the data (UsedRange.Rows/Columns.Count to ensure it is only the data) and Selection.PasteSpecial with the xlPasteColumnWidths, xlPasteValues, and xlPasteFormats options to copy the data over. None of the data is filtered. Just straight data.

I would expect the newly added workbook to be smaller than the one with the macros because the one with the macros has two extra sheets that I don't transfer, and the sheets I do transfer are identical.

And that's where it gets weird. The file with the macros and more data is 18.7Mb, but the new one with only two sheets is 24.8Mb. One is .xlsm and the other is .xlsx (because it has no macros).

I've tried opening the new workbook and saving as .xlsm (no material difference to the size) and as .xls (it got even bigger). I've opened the new workbook, gone to the end of the data and deleted all the blank rows and columns, but no effect (because the rows are already empty).

Why would the file with less in it be so much bigger (or bigger at all)?

Macro To Batch Copy And Save Worksheets With File Names Listed In Cells?

Oct 23, 2013

I have a workbook that contains worksheets. They are listed as follows:

Sheet 1ABCDEFG

In cells A1 - A49 I have text. What I would like to do is to have a macro that I can run that will basically copy and save new workbooks with sheets A - G copied over and have the new workbook saved with the file name that I have denoted in cells A1 - A49 on Sheet 1. Also, the macro would ask me where I want to save the new Workbooks.

For example, if this were Sheet 1, Column A then the cells below would be the saved name of the new workbooks and the new workbooks would have Sheets A - G in themRed

Blue

Purple

Black

White

Yellow

Orange

Green

Gray

Brown

One more piece of information, the file that is being copied and saved is large (~80MB). If there is a macro that would allow me to simply "save as' the workbook and the Saved Workbooks would be named using the data in Sheet 1, that would work as well in case copying, pasting, then saving may take more time
