Identify Minimum Combination Of Columns Which Makes Row Unique?
Nov 20, 2013
I have a (phylogenetic) matrix with a species in each row, and morphological character in each column, scored as 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 for each different species, so something like the following but much bigger:
Character 1 Character 2 Character 3
Species A 1 0 1
Species B 3 2 2
Species C 1 2 0
I want to identify the minimum combination of different columns (i.e. their values, but also which columns) that make a particular row unique.

how can I retrieve a unique list coming from a combination of 2 columns. Using VBA would be much better.
e.g.
Col1Col2
RED 1
RED 2
BLUE 1
BLUE 1
RED 1
BLUE 3
BLUE 2
BLUE 1
RED 1
Result will be
RED 1
RED 2
BLUE 1
BLUE 3
BLUE 2

I have a formula that I can't get to paste successfully in the forum - it keeps getting cut off?!? ... but I think I can probably simplify my explanation to get the answer I want anyway.
I need to only show the value from AUS!$H$2:$H$17 if the C2 & D2 combination are the same as the AUS!$B$2:AUS!$B$17 & $AUS!$C$2:AUS!$C$17 combination.

I am looking for an efficient solution to the following problem. I have a sales table with two columns, titled C1 and C2. The first column lists the product sold, and the second column lists the associated customer.
Here's what I mean (though I can't figure out how to create neat columns in this post):
[C1] [C2]
Prod1 CharlieCo
Prod3 AlphaCorp
Prod2 BetaInc
Prod3 BetaInc
Prod1 AlphaCopr......................

I used the RANK and COUNTIF combination to get the unique ranking of a range. For example, the formula is:
=RANK(A1,$A$1:$A$890,0)+COUNTIF($A$1:A1,A1)-1
To my surprise, the failed to produce the results that I want. I attached a sample file here. Basically, the two ranks of 416 and 418 are not there.
A source below really shows the formula should work. [URL] .......

I need to identify the number of occasions on which a product type is bought by a customer in isolation from other product types. I have attached a sample to illustrate. The actual data is more complex and is actually medical data concerning issue of oral or IV drugs. There are many thousands of records.
To clarify, in the example, there was only one occasion when Bread was bought on its own by a particular customer on a particular day. The way the data is presented, 'Bread' could be listed before 'Milk' or, as with 'Steve' on the 2/4, it could be in the middle of a series of 'Milk' purchases. I can sort by date/name/type, but I cant work out a formula to resolve the count.

I have a spreadsheet (Excel 2000) that contains around 10,000 rows. I now
need to be able to identify each row via a unique identifier, but am having
trouble working out what to do when new rows are added or when existing rows
are copied and paste.
New rows and copied rows should get new unique identifiers, but I can see no
way of doing this. Does anyone have any suggestions? There is nothing unique
about the data that I can hang on to and the "SheetChanged" event does not
fire for inserted rows in Excel 2000.
This spreadsheet is owned by one of our clients, so I can't add new
worksheets or columns to the existing workbook - I can just add cell
comment.

What kind of formula I need to identify if in a given range there are only unique values?
The range (containing 12 cells) may contain only two text values: "Actual" or "Forecast".
If all values are equal to "Actual" I would like the formula to return "A".
If all values are equal to "Forecast" I would like the formula to return "F".
If there are both "Actual" and "Forecast" values found in the range I would like the formula to return "A/F".

I have, on one sheet, a list of incumbent employees that includes the following columns: Job Title [text] and Salary [number].
I am trying to automatically populate a second sheet with columns designating: A list of each unique job title (no duplicates), the maximum salary corresponding to each unique job title, and the minimum salary corresponding to each unique job title.
Lastly, I'm an attorney dealing with confidential client data, so I'll have to go through a lot of trouble to post an example... but I'll do it if necessary.

I have three columns that each have a drop down of text options; column A has three options, column B has three options and column C has two options. I want to have a fourth column that will show a text value dependent on the combination of the three columns.
It ends up being 18 variations so my IF formula just won't compute.
This is basically the format I have and works for a few values then just chucks up an error when I extend it to all 18 variations:
IF(AND(A1="text",B1="text2",C1="text3"),"show this text",
IF(AND(B1="other",B1="other2",C1="other3"),"then show this", ) etc etc
Any way I can get this to work for all 18 possible outcomes??

It's a time sheet that I need to have whatever data is listed in column E to be listed starting in cell C27 but only once even if it's listed several times. In cell D27 I need the sums to match the data to it's left with the values from above in column D. I've used fill colors to help show my intent. I would also like it to keep track of remaining vacation time by recognizing the word 'VAC' from column E and subtract the value from it's left. This value is shown in cell J26 as '46hrs REMAINING'.

I have a macro-routine that generates a table of all sheet-headers (+/- 100-120 sheets) in a workbook. It's crusial that all headers - row("1:1") - have the same values in respektiv columns -so I have this routine to check that this really is the case, before new prosess. The table is rather huge - so I should som way or another identify the columns with more than one value (f.ex back-ground-color in column-top-cell). In this case I must edit and correct the header, and run my routine once again - until all headers are the same
Table is plased in Sheetc("HeaderCheck")
My routine works, but I dont know how to fix this mark-up stuff.

So I have a workbook that has a range of dates in one column and a corresponding range of times in the column next to it. On a separate sheet I want to return the lowest time&date, and then the maximum time&date. I've tried a few different things but nothing is working.I tried this:
Code:
=MIN(B:B+D:D)
This didn't work for some reason. It did return a time, but it wasn't the lowest. The maximum wasn't even close.
Previously I was just doing the min/max of the date in one cell and then the min/max of the time in a different one, but obviously that didn't work since the time wasn't going off of the maximum date, so it was just showing the lowest time period.

I have two spreadsheet in which I am looking for duplicate customer names.
1st - "Customers"
2nd - "Orders"
In column A of my Customers spreadsheet I have the following formula
=IF(ISERROR(MATCH(E2,Orders$D2:D1000,0))=FALSE, "Y","N"). This allows me to see if a name in my Customer spreadsheet (column E is a field of names) is also in my Orders spreadsheet (column D is a field of names). My end results is either a Y indicating a duplicate or a N for no duplicates.
What I am looking to do next is to place in column B of my Customers spreadsheet the date that coincides with the duplicating customer name. Sorry to be confusing. If a customers name is found in the Orders spreadsheet I need to know what date has been given to this customer (column L in the Orders spreadsheet contains the date information).
However, on numerous occasions a customers name is found in the Orders spreadsheet more than once meaning there may be more than one date which needs to be placed in column B of my Customers spreadsheet.

I want to add another condition so that the formula only returns the lowest value in column U where (i) column N contains the text "NO" and also (ii) column F contains the text "YES".

I have a pivot table and perhaps that isnt the best way to do this. (Sample attached). Ultimately I need to display two columns only:
Application (ColA) Business (ColC)
There are three columns of data.
Applications (ColA) Usage(ColB) Business (ColC)
There are multiple instances of the same application in ColA, ColB has usage =true or blank and ColC has multiple instances of the same business.
Based on the count of Application in ColA, and the count of Usage =True, I need to return the Business with the MAX count.
Note: the usage cannot be a filter, it must be a count.

I've entered in column B: =IF(MATCH(A2,C$2:C$303),A2,"No")
This formula is resulting in a duplicate of column A in column B.
