Overlapping Cells Prevent From Using Just One Cell?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to get the average of every 6 cells, but the first value of each group of 6 is the last of the previous group. I'd also like the output to be displayed beside the last value in each group. i.e.
CELL B7 =AVERAGE(A2:A7)
CELL B12 =AVERAGE(A7:A12)
CELL B17 =AVERAGE(A12:A17)
etc.
I saw this "=AVERAGE(OFFSET(A$1,(ROW()-ROW(B$1))*10,,10,))" in another post which seems similar but how to modify it.
One of my customers has a worksheet where he enters [alot] of text into cells. As if they were all word documents. Ok, well, not that much text. In either aspect, the cells are supposed to overlap into the next cell, if it's empty. Which it is. Only it isn't overlapping at all. It's still cropping as if there was some value/data/formulae/anything in that adjacent cell. I'm not sure why. We've deleted the cells in question (Both the ones we were enterring data into, and the ones that were supposedly empty) and re-inserted blank cells, and it still does not work.
Is this a glitch, or is there some work-around or fix for it? Or is it a setting and we're just special?
This is probably a simple fix, but I cannot figure out why some of my data will overlap over the next cell if it is bigger than the cell width and then some will not, I just get ###### error. There is nothing in the next cell. I don't want to increase the cell size because that would mess up the rest of my page format. I've also tried to merge two cells together, but then it causes an error in my macro, even though the cell name is the same.

I wanted to see if there was a way to keep an empty cell blank when the cell next to it is overlapping. I know I can wrap the box but I'd prefer to keep all the cells one width.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a spreadsheet that is emailed to someone to fill in. They then fill in some information and send it on to someone else.
Sometimes they don't fill in all the information so is it possible to have excel check that cells are filled in and to prevent someone from saving unless this is so? Or maybe a message stating that the cells need to be completed if Excel is being closed or saved?
Below are the equations in 3 cells. They are averaging intervals of 7 cells without overlap.
=AVERAGE(A2:A8)
=AVERAGE(A9:A15)
=AVERAGE(A16:A22)
If I autofill, Excel does not seem to be able to recognize that pattern. Instead, Excel adds 1 to each row so that the fourth cell is as follows:
=AVERAGE(A17:A23)
But rather, the fourth cell should be the following:
=AVERAGE(A23:A29)
Is there a way to autofill with the 7 cell intervals?
I would like cells to highlight within a row only if they are non-blank and if other non-blank cells in that row fall within the same time range.
See the attached example for what I'm looking to do. I can setup my sheet one of two ways (as shown) if it makes finding a solution easier.
Conditional Formatting - Overlapping time.xlsx
I have a spreadsheet of all of my company's long distance calls for last month - 30k rows. It includes the start time of the call and the duration. From that I can calculate the end time of the call.
My phone system can handle 24 concurrent calls. I'm trying to see how many times throughout the month did we have 24 or more calls going on at once.
Assume Start_Time is Column_A and End_Time is Column_B
Currently I can test if one call is going on at the same time a second call is by this formula
I have been looking all over and cannot find an answer on how to do this. I work for a call center that takes inbound technical support calls. We recently added a chat support option for our end users. Our chat agents can take up to 3 chats at the same time. I need to determine the total amount of concurrent chats for each agent per day as well as the total amount of concurrent time for each agent per day. Below is a sample of my data. Notice how the start time on row 5 is earlier than the end time on row 4. I need excel to count this as a concurrent chat and then calculate the amount of time that was concurrent (in this example it would be 16 minutes). Currently I have 2000 rows of data and 30 different agents.
Start_Time
End_Time
Agent Name (Num)
6/3/13 12:13
6/3/13 12:24

How to calculate overlapping times. I have found a few formulas on here I have tried to reproduce with no luck. This thread is similar to my issue.(How to calculate the amount of overlapping time) I need a non VBA format.
I need to know what times are overlapping; I need to see when two people are working active cases at the same time and how much time is overlapping. This is a huge spreadsheet with several rows of data. At this moment I am dong it all manually.
Here is a sample of what is looks like. As you can see the first line is overlapping with the second line by 8 minutes into the next case.

I am currently setting up protection on an excel sheet - I have a proceedure to open a specific worsheet and lock and unlock cells according to whether or not certain information exisit. My question is, although I can lock cells and prevent users changing them using code I can't seem to stop them selecting cells in the first place - this is obviously achieveable from the 'Protection'>'protect workbook' menu but I want to do it from code since the sheet is unprotected and reprotected a number of times during a session....

I wanted to ask if you know any charting software which can give weight to elements on a chart when two or more variables overlap? Ideally the color intensity of, say, circles should increase from pale blue to vivid blue depending on the number of the data items which are operlapping at one point. I include a sample chart which should give you a general idea of the chart I want to make and the data set from which it was made.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to design a spreadsheet for planning a project schedule. Down the left are the dates, across the top are the resource names and in the content are the activities being carried out.
Each activity I have is given a two letter prefix, e.g. TD = Training Delivery. I then have conditional formatting applied to each cell to change the cell colour based on the two letter prefix. In all there are six conditional formatting rules.
Now, my problem is that I need this sheet to be really fluid. I want to be able to drag and drop blocks of activities to a buffer area at the side and then drag them into another part of the schedule. However, when you drag and drop (effectively cut and paste) the activities around the conditional formatting moves with the cut content, whereas I want it to remain where it was. I guess what I'm after is a way of dragging and dropping values only.
The best I've come up with so far is an onChange macro that reapplies the conditional formatting to the relevant part of my spreadsheet, but I can't believe this is the most elegant solution. Is there perhaps a way of triggering a macro onPaste?
Deleting rows that have dependent cells.
I have one sheet that uses a very simple formula for copying certain values from one cell to another sheet =VALUE(Sheet1!B5).
My problem is that rows have to be deleted in sheet1 as the information eventually becomes expired and the following is displayed in my cell in
sheet 2 =VALUE (Sheet1!#REF!) Is there a work round this, to prevent the formula showing a #REF! Value.
Row 5 is replaced and the same formula has to be re-entered. Excel 97 used in our office unfortunately.
I have a dynamic column chart that may contain positive or negative (or both) values. The columns contain Data Labels positioned 'Outside End'.
I want to avoid the Data Labels (for the negative values) overlapping the x axis. Is there a way to do this via VBA?
I know how to update the chart axis via vba linked to cell values, but I can't figure out a formula I can use to calculate the minimum which takes into account the distance needed to avoid the overlapping problem.
Attached please find two charts based on data from 2003 until year-end 2006 (estimated). I want to show that the data is "seasonal" and sales depends on the month it falls on... i have several issues with the chart, is the second chart "too" overlapping and is there too much data to read? 2) how can i get the text boxes to go in the same direction as the chart..i know in powrerpoint you can move the direction of the textbox but how in excel? in sum, i can only choose one chart but still want to make each chart look much better.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got a workbook that I'm currently designing and I've just realised that I need to delete a few sheets, paste in some new template sheets and rename them. The problem is, I've already completed my summary sheets and I don't want to have to redo the values. Essentially, I just want to (temporarily) turn off auto-updating of formulas when cells / sheets are changed/moved/deleted.
For practical purposes: I need to delete the sheet named "Jan", paste in a new sheet "MonthTemp", rename "MonthTemp" to "Jan" and have all my formulas not updated (e.g. still referencing "Jan" instead of "#REF!")
I have a worksheet that I will be allowing other to access so that I can get them to input certain data. I will be protecting the sheet to avoid having them inadvertantly overwrite any of my formulae. So, I have a matrix on the left for them to input data into with calculations to the right that they cannot change. Can I prevent them from moving cells within the input matrix
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have macro that brings information from outlook to excel. In the beginning of macro, it deletes range of cells. That destroys the functions that target those cells. Is there a way avoid that? Using some different method or ?

I have users that are using a protected Excel Workbook where they sometimes have a need to copy values from Internet Explorer paste them into the protected Excel Workbook. When this happens, if the users select the cell and don't actually paste the text into the formula bar (or by double clicking the cell), they can replace the destination cell's formatting - which in this case makes the cells a locked cell instead of a unlocked cell.
Now is there a way to automatically have the pasted value keep the destination formatting? Or perhaps is there a way to set the copy and paste settings so it only pastes text from Internet Explorer into Excel and not the formats?
It is not an option for the userbase to select the option choice of matching the destination formating when pasting as it is a very large user base without much Excel experience.
I have a workbook with a protected sheet, some cells locked others unlocked, which the users continually update. The problem is some of the unlocked cells are becoming locked, preventing the users from carrying out their role.
I couldn't figure out how they were doing this until I saw Powered Convoy's thread Prevent Unlocked Cells Becoming Locked Via Copy/Paste. This occurs when pasting from another application.
My question is as the title, how best to prevent unlocked cells in a protected sheet from being locked by the user?
I could try to write VBA to intercept all the different ways of pasting data, 5 that I can think of, but was hoping someone else has come across this flaw and has a better or easier solution.
I'm looking for a function that will display the average of a row of cells, while at the same time not displaying any error messages. It's easy to average cells without blank values, but to combine that with no errors is difficult for me. I saw many ways to do the average, one of which is:
= SUM(A1:E1)/COUNTIF(A1:E1,">0")
That function doesn't work for a row of blank cells (i.e., hidden rows), though. The result is an error message.
I also read about a way to ignore an error in a computation:
=IF(ISERROR(F1),"",F1)
The problem is when I combine those functions I get a blank cell no matter which function I put first, and without regards to cell values or not. The reason I want this to be error-free is that I have to average the "average column" at the bottom of the table, too (i.e., F100).
I have a spreadsheet that allows users to paste set data from a PDF Image (using OCR) straight into Excel and then use the MID function to split the data accordingly.
Unfortunately, the OCR isn’t too intuitive and gets it wrong sometimes.
So to counter this, in another sheet (in the same workbook) I have a manual input section, and a simple macro button that pastes this data into the same fields where the OCR text would be, so that the main sheet works exactly the same way as before.
The problem is, and most likely due to the simplicity of the sheet, if a combination of OCR pasting and manual inputting is used, when I hit the paste button, it over rides the OCR data with blank cells
In the link below I have shown what is currently happening (1, 2, 3), and an example of what I would actually like it to do (4, 5, 6).
Example - Online Spreadsheets - EditGrid
So, in the 2nd scenario, I would like “5” to recognise that the respective cells in “4” already contain data and fill them ‘Grey’. This I have already achieved with basic conditional formatting.
However, I need to take it 1 step further and say that if the parent sheets cell (Auto OCR) contains data, as well as filling cells (in sheet Manual) lock these cells off and prevent the end user from adding data and/ or being copied over to the parent sheet.
Is this possible?
The result then being the parent sheet with both OCR text and copied text from the manual input sheet.
Both sheets are protected anyway and only allow for user input in certain areas, so is it even possible to apply further protection once the sheet is locked already?
I have a spreadsheet that is very large and formated a certain way. I want to make sure that a user cant put the cursor in the lower left corner and copy cells by dragging, copy & paste, or do anything other than input data and be able to highleght text and reinput data in case they mistyped or misspelled the data.
ex: user clicks on cell E33 and types in '1234568' and then move to next cell. The user can click back on E33 and can correct by retyping. That is all the user is allowed.
The cells in question are also in ranges if this helps. EX: 'E33:AJ67'
