TRIM Function And Leading Spaces
Sep 25, 2008I have some cells containing imported text with a lot of leading spaces. I try to get rid of them by TRIM'ing those cells, but it doesn't work.
Is TRIM only for trailing spaces?

Jun 10, 2008to trim leading and trailing spaces from values I'm getting from a For Next routine. I'm using c as my variable and Trim(c.value) as the operation.
There are other routines that search for the explicit string that's the result of the trimmed value and some can't be found because the trim as I'm using it isn't trimming.

Apr 25, 2007I have come up with this to Trim all of the data from rows 2:30 removing any trailing spaces after the last word in each cell. The macro takes a couple of minutes to run have I got something wrong that is making it run slowly or does the Trim process just take longer?

Feb 5, 2010On a regular basis I have to upload cost to our order system. These cost are sent to me by the suppliers, and the part numbers have to match exactly, (from the excel sheet to the order system), or else the cost won't upload.
I have found that in some of my upload files there is a space, or sometimes several spaces, at the end of the part number. These spaces will screw up the upload. I alwyas use the "Replace" option to replace spaces with nothing, and that usually works.
In the attached sample file, there are 3 part numbers with a space at the end of the part number. I tried using the replace option. That didn't work. I also tried using the =TRIM() formula and the =CLEAN() formula, and neither of those removed the spaces. Why can't I remove the spaces from the end of these part numbers?
How To Trim All The Spaces From Data
Jan 11, 2012Normally I would use trim or substitute to get rid of the spaces from the data. However, this time, they all don't work.
some samples below. : some numbers are text version, some are numerical numbers.
So, are there any other ways to get rid of the leading space as well?

I know about the function TRIM, but that only works at the start or end, I need something simple to trim the extra space between two words.

Apr 30, 2008My V-lookups are not working. I have data with extra spaces before or after the word. The table I am looking up does not have extra spaces. I'm trying to to a TRIM(data with spaces) and then copy and paste the values so that the spaces go away and the TRIM is not taking my spaces out.

I currently have the following macro, but when I run it, it checks every cell in the active worksheet which cause the application to hang. Sep 25, 2007I'm in need of some VBA code (to be included in a Macro) that will automatically use the TRIM function for all cells in a whole column and that will then replace the values in that column with the resulting TRIM values. I have a LOT of individual files with varying #'s of records in them, so a way that will address all of them (all the cells in the specified column due to varying #'s of records) would be best.

Jan 30, 2010I am trying to sort a database with about 500,000 names. For some reason, about half my data has leading spaces and half do not. I have taken a screenshot at the divide so you can see what I mean. The sort in the picture is in this order:
Column D
Column C
Column A
Is there any way to mass purge these leading spaces in Column D (column b also has the issue but the fix is not nearly as important as for column D)?
Import File, Keep Leading Zero, Get Rid Of Spaces
May 21, 2009I have a problem which may seem simple but is daunting for me.
I have a file in xls format that i need to import data from.
The problem is with column A, (e.g. 0233 45) if I get rid of the spaces I loose leading zero, if I keep the zero I cannot get rid of spaces. The thing is I need both conditions satisfied.
To summarize:
1)Import file and delete columns B and C
2)In column A get rid of spaces but keep leading zero (it's important to keep the zero where it exists, not add one). The length is different for each string in column A.

Dec 5, 2013Any easy way to remove all spaces from a cell, both leading and trailing? I find it hard to believe that Excel doesn't have this functionality. I don't particulary want to write a VBA script since I have never done it but if that's the only way, I'd love to know how to write it. I have looked everywhere but obviously not in the right places.

Search For & Remove Leading Or Trailing Spaces
Sep 1, 2008I wrote a tool that people at work use. They initially need to paste in a bunch of customer locations with Address, City, State, Zip, etc. Sometimes the Users have "bad input" data that has non-breaking spaces, multiple space between words, or leading and trailing spaces and nonbreaking spaces. I have code to get rid of all of those problems. However, the Users often use their data for other important functions at work. So I want to give them a message to let them know that their Original Data is "bad".
So instead of just "Fix" . . . I want to "Report the problem", then "Fix". I need to identify exactly what problem was found - not just tell the User that their data is bad.
I wrote a simple Search routine with error handling that identifies 2 of the 4 cases and notifies the User:
Case 1) ASCII 160 (non-breaking space, HTML  
Case 2) multiple spaces (2 or more consecutive spaces)
Case 3) Leading or Trailing Spaces (ASCII 032)
Case 4 Leading or Trailing non-breaking spaces (ASCII 160, which is HTML  )
I cannot quite figure out how to find the 3rd and 4th Cases. If anyone can help me with Case 4 especially, then I can probably do the same thing for Case 3.
I think it will work to somehow use this idea - the code is not even real code but it is just conceptual:
RIGHT(CellReference, 1) = Char(160) or Char(032)
LEFT(CellReference, 1) = Char(160) or Char(032)

May 27, 2008While entering data space is given in the first and last of each cell content. For example
if there is a word Alex Patrix in a cell, space is given before A of alex and after x of Patrix. This is done fo many cells. I want to remove only initial and last space which is un-necessary.
The space caused problem to compare cell so i've to remove space.
I've around 2500 cells with this problem.
Using TRIM Function
Jan 30, 2008I'm trying to clean up a very large spreadsheet that contains a tremendous amount of empty space.
I tried using the TRIM function to delete some of the additional space within each cell, but it only seems to allow you to update one cell/column at a time.
Is there a way to clean up the entire spreadsheet at once?
Find/Replace all spaces won't work because some cells have multiple words, and they need the space in between.
Using Vlookup On Trim Function
May 1, 2014I'm taking 3 very different reports and consolidating them into one manageable readable form. Only problem is that no 1 report has the same info. I've created a key to form pick up the same information that is read differently. As my spreadsheet grows so do the formula issues. I've had one report that has been the biggest pain to break apart. It takes several things and consolidates them, ex: big 2014 girl - dog 20145
I'm using a trim formula to read the last 5 digits that is the only consistent part of the string. =right(J3,5) to trim what i need to read (20145). this formula works. I'm than trying to preform a Vlookup based on what is returned from the trim. The trim number is located in a separate tab as the "key" 20145 = golden Labradors. formula for vlookup that works by itself, but throws up a blank cell when i point it to the trim cell.

$A2 = the info 20145 from the trim
Info! = is the tab with my 20145 = golden Labradors
A:ZZ = the range in which i need it to find 20145
2 = the second column where it should find 20145 = golden Labradors
False = exact match.
Why my formulas work separately but not when used together? The Vlookup will work if I type in the number 20145. I don't want to type 20145 anymore. I want to use the trim and have the vlookup notice the number pulled from the trim.

Feb 5, 2009Due to the fact that some of the raw data I get dumped out of my database has leading and trailing spaces it is necessary to trim them. The one part of my code which seems to take forever to run is the section which performs this function on around 22,000 cells in one column. Here is the code I'm using. Is there a better way to do this?

The thing, with much code, seems to be that the slowness of my computer in executing code is directly proportional to the amount of uptime on the machine. Often a cold start will remedy the issue. Rather than having to do this daily to remedy the situation is there some other remedy to the problem?

Jan 13, 2014My requirement is to remove the spaces in the text in each cell in a worksheet. i have used TRIM function for this. Sheet1 will have the imported data and sheet 2 has the formula to TRIM. i have an issue when using TRIM on date format. I have used formula TRIM(sheet1!Ax) for columns 1,2 and 3 and TRIM(TEXT(pcload!D1,"mm/dd/yyyy")) for column 4. But the blanks cells in sheet 1 have a value of 01/00/1900 in sheet2. I need the blank cells to be displayed as blank in sheet2.

Trim And Clean Function But Formula Doesn't Work?
Jan 31, 2014 I'm coping and pasting data (html) into a worksheet. When I try to format some of the columns as accounting$, number, ect. They won't format. It looks as if there are spaces before and after the data. So I tried the trim and clean function but it doesn't work, so I guess the blank "spaces" are not really spaces.
It gets better...
When I do the same exact copy and paste (as html) on another persons computer, they are able to format just fine, and the "spaces" are removed automatically.
Why is this working on one computer but not the other? Is it a setting that my computer has enabled or disabled? If so, what is it?

where cline is an input line. if the line input(cline) has multiple spaces between two words, how would it split that.
Eg :
abcd defg fefdcs fasdfasdsa
would the output of above be

arr(1) = defg
arr(2) = fefdcs

List Of Values With Spaces And Make New List Without Spaces
May 20, 2013I have a list in Column A" Job List" (the amount of entries will change based on job openings). There are some cells that are blank; randomly throughout. I need to create a new Column B "Current Jobs List" with no spaces. I have to do this weekly and each time I update my "Current Jobs List" from the new data in the "Job List" without any spaces.(I do not want to just do a filter) .
