Any Advantage To Trim Over (find / Replace) For Eliminating Spaces?
Mar 7, 2014I've been using =TRIM for a while... but just tried FIND "space bar" REPLACE "nothing" and it works fine and takes about 1/10 the time.

View 6 RepliesI have come up with this to Trim all of the data from rows 2:30 removing any trailing spaces after the last word in each cell. The macro takes a couple of minutes to run have I got something wrong that is making it run slowly or does the Trim process just take longer?
Sub TRIM_RANGE()
Dim myRange As Range
Dim myRow As Range
Sheets("CAMPAIGNS_2007").Select
Set myRange = Range("2:30")
If myRange Is Nothing Then Exit Sub
Application. ScreenUpdating = False
myRange.Replace What:=Chr(160), Replacement:=Chr(32), _
LookAt:=xlPart, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False
For Each myRow In myRange.Columns
If Application. CountA(myRow) > 0 Then
myRow.TextToColumns Destination:=myRow(1), _
DataType:=xlFixedWidth, FieldInfo:=Array(0, 1)
End If
Next myRow
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
End Sub
I am having trouble with eliminating spaces from the value I've generated from my formula.
The formula will take the first 4 characters from a list of names, and add to that a number and a year. (For instance: "Conniff" would become "conn_01_09").
My problem is if I have "Ag Services". "ag s_01_09" would be generated. How can I eliminate that space? The list of names is in one field.
The formula I used so far is: =CONCATENATE(MID(E2,1,4),"_",MID(F2,1,2),"_",MID(C2,3,2))
I tried TRIM and CLEAN, but couldn't get them to work right.
I have a formula that is dependent upon a column of cells containing text. Cells within this column randomly have an additional space (" ") following the words. With this invisible space, the formula doesn't work as intended.
Since I have an extremely long list of names, is there a way to easily remove additional spaces after words without manually going through each cell and deleting them?
On a regular basis I have to upload cost to our order system. These cost are sent to me by the suppliers, and the part numbers have to match exactly, (from the excel sheet to the order system), or else the cost won't upload.
I have found that in some of my upload files there is a space, or sometimes several spaces, at the end of the part number. These spaces will screw up the upload. I alwyas use the "Replace" option to replace spaces with nothing, and that usually works.
In the attached sample file, there are 3 part numbers with a space at the end of the part number. I tried using the replace option. That didn't work. I also tried using the =TRIM() formula and the =CLEAN() formula, and neither of those removed the spaces. Why can't I remove the spaces from the end of these part numbers?
Normally I would use trim or substitute to get rid of the spaces from the data. However, this time, they all don't work.
some samples below. : some numbers are text version, some are numerical numbers.
So, are there any other ways to get rid of the leading space as well?
Oper.999971240999903554 3554 1179 1240 346799990 614 3467 614 614 614 2440 3467 614 3467 614
I have some cells containing imported text with a lot of leading spaces. I try to get rid of them by TRIM'ing those cells, but it doesn't work.
Is TRIM only for trailing spaces?
I have n rows which has headings. I would like to remove spaces in between them.

Maple-Grove

I know about the function TRIM, but that only works at the start or end, I need something simple to trim the extra space between two words.
My V-lookups are not working. I have data with extra spaces before or after the word. The table I am looking up does not have extra spaces. I'm trying to to a TRIM(data with spaces) and then copy and paste the values so that the spaces go away and the TRIM is not taking my spaces out.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am working with a spreadsheet and rather new to be VBA. How do I select a range that only has data. I currently have the following macro, but when I run it, it checks every cell in the active worksheet which cause the application to hang. I would like it to automatically select only cells that have data in them ignoring all empty cells. I need this to be an automatically process running without the user selecting a range of data.
Here is my code ..
I am trying to use the trim function to remove unwanted spaces at the beginning of cells that contain an address. The entire column contains spaces prior to the street number/name.
View 14 Replies View Relatedto trim leading and trailing spaces from values I'm getting from a For Next routine. I'm using c as my variable and Trim(c.value) as the operation.
There are other routines that search for the explicit string that's the result of the trimmed value and some can't be found because the trim as I'm using it isn't trimming.
I'm in need of some VBA code (to be included in a Macro) that will automatically use the TRIM function for all cells in a whole column and that will then replace the values in that column with the resulting TRIM values. I have a LOT of individual files with varying #'s of records in them, so a way that will address all of them (all the cells in the specified column due to varying #'s of records) would be best.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two columns each having 8500 rows.
A= Zip code
B= Sales
Duplication of zips appear in column A - and I only need to return the highest sales in B. So based on the example below..I only need to return $500 in column C.
A
A2=50201
A3=50201
B
b2=$345
b3 $500
A range of cells contain characters that i want to replace with spaces. The problem is that the length of the string differs and also the characters differ.
For example, below a list of cell values:
GR
GRKR
GRKRKR
GRKRK1
GRON
GRONBL
As a result for the first value i want 2 spaces, for the second one 4 spaces etc.
Is it possible to do this with a formula? I don't want to use VBA for this if possible...
I am trying to replace all spaces in a string with an underscore.
I'll be applying a loop to cycle through the whole column in that file. Should be pretty easy..
I need help looking at text in a cell that has [] around it such as [big red trucks] and copy that text to the end of the cell and replace the "space' between the words and add '+' signs so the result looks like [big red trucks] [big+red+trucks].
example:
This is what the cell looks like before
[big red trucks] cost 5000 in store
This is what the cell needs to look like after
[big red trucks] cost 5000 in store[big+reg+trucks]
there may be additional text after the ']', I need the phrase with the + signs copied to the end of the cell
I am trying to get excel to sum totals, but exclude answers that are outside
of a certain range. I can get it to do this by using =IF(Z8>0.5,Z8,0).
However, I need it to display absolutely nothing in the cells, rather than a
zero because it alters future calculations.
This problem has come up fairly frequently lately, and I'm not sure how to fix it, or if this is by design...but in Excel 2003 I can't seem to do a "Find and Replace" based on the value of a cell. I can do a find, based on cell value, but the moment I change to the replace tab, the "values" and "comments" are missing from the "look in" dropdown.
I've only noticed this when I'm trying to replace on a filtered list, so I'm not sure if that is part of the issue.
Perhaps an alternative way of arriving at the same goal. Basically I have a worksheet with a number of filtered columns. They are filtered just right, using custom filtering, and so I do not want to undo the filters. In some columns I have formulas that are returning #VALUE! errors. I'd like to replace all of these cells with NA.
I recently became owner of a spreadsheet with some issues, and I am trying to make it useful. Each row has a URL of a blog post, and I want to extract the date from it (which is present in each URL) while getting rid of the rest of the URL. I was able to get rid of everything up to the year (which comes first), but then the URL continues, for example, 2013/05/16/the-rest-of-the-url/ and I would like to just have 2013/05/16 remain.
I am trying to use find and replace with the find box reading 2013/??/??/*/ and replacing it with 2013/??/?? which effectively erases everything else in the url, but leaves ?? instead of the numbers. Is there any way to have it so that it keeps whatever was in the original box?
[Code] .....
Trying to repeat a 550 or so character statement with a find/replace however I am getting type mismatch errors. When I use a smaller message in the "replace" it works.
I need it to post a message exactly as long as what I have in there. How do I get it to work?
Need assistance with the code for catching errors when using the find / replace function in excel? In particular, I am trying to write code to break to an error message when the value or string searched for isn't found in the find / replace. At the minute I have just copied the standard code using a macro and all this does is return a message box saying X entries replaced.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to create a macro where it finds a a certain word in a column for example C. What i want it to do is find anything that says FWD_EUR and then replace that cell (e.g C2) with CASH_EUR_FWD and after it has done that it replaces the adjacent cell (e.g. D2) with EUR_FWD. I then want this to do the same with FWD_USD to CASH_USD_FWD and adjacent cell to USD_FWD.

I have a spreadsheet with data and I need to find text with spaces in one of the columns. How do I do that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if it is possible to do this unique find and replace that is explained below.
I have many columns with data from our database. I have one column that has my html layout in it. I want to find within the html text data and replace it with data from another column for that row.
Example: We have [[manufacturer]] in the html area that we want to replace with data from our column called Manufacturer. So, it will replace the text in the html named [[Manufacturer]] with that rows Manufacturer data we have.
Is that possible to do?
I have around 10 names which I want to replace with their code names. For Example, "Alan Richard" needs to be replaced with AR001. Problem is I don't know cell range and this name might appear more than once in the data.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to find and replace #N/A from a formula (link to another sheet) with nothing in the cell, using VBA.
Using this code it will do the first "find"
Cells.Find(What:="#N/A", After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt _
:=xlPart, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, SearchDirection:=xlNext, MatchCase:= _
True, SearchFormat:=False).Activate
ActiveCell.ClearContents
Trying this
Cells.Replace What:="#N/A", Replacement:=" ", LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=True, SearchFormat:=True, _
ReplaceFormat:=False
LookIn:= is highlighted and I get a "named argument not found"
Don't understand that because LookIn:=xlValues works in the first code.
I did try and place After:=ActiveCell,before this, but that does not work. I Get the same error.
I have more then one cell with the #N/A which I would like to get rid of. I want this to work only on this one sheet. The other sheet that the formula is pulling from does have #N/A, and that is okay, I need it there.
I have a list of sales associates that are assigned numbers. For example, John Doe is 1022. The data I have to work with only shows his number 1022 but for my reports management wants the name John Doe. I have about 60 sales associates and have a VB code that 'finds and replaces'. The code is huge. It has slowly grown out of hand, with more sales associates added daily. I also have 22 sheets in one workbook with specific columns to search for the numbers to replace with the names.
This is what I would like to do. Have a sheet named associates, as more associates are added I would just have to add their name and number. Have two columns with headers column A - Associates column B Associate #. Name ranges for the two columns and write a code that says look in the sheet associate, at named range 'numbertoname' and if the current sheet 'total sales' I am in has the number 1022 in column C replace it with the name John Doe. It seems like it should be easy but.......I have tried and tried today.
