# Time Arithmetic - Calculate Hour Difference

Apr 10, 2014
Time arithmetic, I have two cells representing a time range.

The first one (say: X1) is formatted using the custom format [h]:mm and contains a certain number of hours and minutes. It gets its value by summing up other cells in the same format. A typical entry could be 98:35 to represent a duration 98 hours and 35 minutes.

The second cell (say: X2) is formatted as a number with 4 decimal places after the comma, and similarily gets its value by summing up other cells in the same format. It also represents a time duration as a number of hours. A typical entry could be 202.7500 to represent a duration of 202 hours and 45 minutes (because 0.75 of an hour is 45 minutes).

I would like to calculate the hour difference between these cells, and display it as hours and minutes. In the example given, the result should be negative, i.e. -104:10.

My first approach was to use the formula X1-X2 and format the result as [h]:mm, but this gives me a #VALUE! error.

I am trying to figure out a way to count the minutes used from 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. I have this years worth of data. I would like to do it by month and by week and by day. I use office 08 for the mac and its my understanding that it doesn't have VBA. I would also like to be able to figure out if on a certain date a employee made over x amount of phone calls in a day. But have several employees. I have columns that are labeled date, employee, minutes used.

I would like to find out if a job took more than 24 hour cycle time (eg. 6:00 am to 5:59:59 AM next day). data:

A1 = received date & time (format "m/d/yyyy h:mm")

B1 = completed date & time (format "m/d/yyyy h:mm")

my formula is '=if(B1-A1>"24:00"+0,"Yes","No"). The problem with the formula is that it doesnt exclude weekends nor public holidays. I couldnt formulate a solution using networkdays function......

This may be a bit vague but here goes.

I have to calculate the difference between the start time and end time of a job. The only catch is, how can I avoid calculating "out of hours" time. So, if a job goes from 9am to 9am the next day, I want it to avoid calculating between the hours of 23:30 and 03:30.

Another example is if a job goes from 02:00 to 04:00, I want it to avoid the tim between 02:00 and 03:00.

If there is a difference in days, so the job goes overnight, how do I take that into consideration also.

I've got a time difference from 8:00AM - 12:30PM as 4.30 I'm trying to get the minutes, .30, converted into a 6 minute increment, .5. Is it possible to do this and if so how would it be done? Below is a chart of how the time is converted from 6 minutes increments into decimal form.

6 = 0.1 36 = 0.6

12 = 0.2 42 = 0.7

18 = 0.3 48 = 0.8

24 = 0.4 54 = 0.9

30 = 0.5 60 = 1.0

I am currently usins Excel 2007 and would like to calculate the diferrence in hours and minutes (ideally in decimal e.g 4:30 should be reflected as 4.5) between two date and time groups, excluding the non-working time between 17:00 and 09:00, weekends and holidays. An 8 hour working day is to be used. I have attached a spreadsheet were I tried to achieved the above with little success.

I have two Rows of data. Each row contains a unique Name column and separate columns for Date, Hour and Minute. I would like to calculate the Time difference in Days, Hours and Minutes between the two Dates. I’m not sure if the way I’ve set it up is the most practical. I’ll attach the spreadsheet to better explain.

I am setting up a time and attendance system.

What I want to do is calculate the overtime that someone has worked but in multiples of 15 minutes.

Example, if someone worked 20 minutes over they would be paid for 15 minutes overtime.

If someone worked 31 minutes over they would be paid 30 minutes overtime.

The possible overtime someone could work in one day is 6 hours.

I want it to return the overtime in decimal numbers (e.g 0.25 for 15 minutes overtime).

I have attached a sample spreadsheet.

I would prefer this to be done in VBA if possible?

I'm trying to do some calculations involving times. I'm using the format [=A2+(A1>A2)-A1] in order to calculate times from one day to the next which avoids negative numbers. This is working well. My problem is now that I'm trying to develop my spreadsheet and am trying to embed this inside an IF statement as the [value_If_True]and I get an error because it doesnt like the leading equals sign inside the IF statement.

I'm working in excel2007:

I want to write a generic formula to calculate the difference of time between cells, the first being a real data point, such as

6/22/2007 8:53

minus a generic constant term using the same date and a given time, 8:30.

So, what I need is something like this:

6/22/2007 8:53 – (same mm/dd/yy @ 8:30)

6/22/2007 12:29 – (same mm/dd/yy @ 8:30)

6/25/2007 11:19 – (same mm/dd/yy @ 8:30)

I have an excel spreadsheet where you enter the start time and end time for job function. Since some of the times cross midnight, I use the formula J3=IF(I3>H3,I3-H3,1+I3-H3) where I is the end time and H is the start time (format hh:mm). This part works fine, however when I sum column J and change my format to Time 37:38:00 (since it is over 24 hrs), it returns a large number of 2234:48:39 which should be closer to 223:00:00.

I have two sets of data, one is recorded every 5 minutes and the other is every 15 minutes. I am trying to add every 3 cells in the 5 minute column so I can compare it side by side with the 15 minute column. I have tried one of the responses in this forum with placing 0s in 2 cells and then the formula in the third however this does not allow me to compare the 2 sets side by side.

I have created a daily schedule which has a number of factory variables taken into consideration which determine the date and time a particular product should, barring any mechanical problems, come off the machine. (see attached spreadsheet).

The date at the top will be editable by me only so that when I update the production quantities, the “date/time off” column automatically re-adjusts to the remaining quantities.

The formulas are a little long winded, but I have left them that way whilst I try and develop it. I should be able to figure out how to condense them later.

My problem is that the “date/time off” on the right works excellent, but over a 24 hr period.

Ordinarily, we work a 12 hour day (6am to 6pm) with overlapping shifts to cover breaks, and 20 mins warm up at the start of the day for the machine, thus maximising a 12 hour day.

Of course if demand exceeds the allotted time we put on overtime.

Is it possible to specify that normal days are only 12 hours so that if a product exceeds 6pm, it flows into the next day with the balance starting at 6:20am?

And, if the production for the week exceeds the time could I stipulate particular days which we deem are suitable for overtime? Ie, we decide Wednesday is a 14 hour day and not 12.

I had toyed with the idea of creating a 365 day table/calendar, on another worksheet which would have its individual allocated hours in an adjacent column and somehow link them to the date/time off, perhaps by way of a VLOOKUP, but I have been chasing my tail trying to figure out how to implement it.

I have a cell (G11) whose format is [h]:mm to store hours worked in a week.

I need to use that in a VBA function. If I query G11.value I get a non-integer number (I DO know that Excel stores time internall like that). How can I get in a VBA procedure exactly what is see in the cell..e.g if someone worked 35:15 hours, I want to be able to get 35:15 in the procedure. I need to strip it from there to work out payment, eg (hourly rate * 35) + (hourly rate * (15/60)/100).

I have tried using format but it does not like the "[h].mm" argument.

In A1 I have 35 min elapsed time and need to change it to time as a portion of an hour. It reads the 35 min as TIME, therefore I am currently using

=IF(A1>=0.5,A1-0.5,A1)*24. Output is .58, which is perfect.

(output column formatted as a number)

Likewise 3:28 becomes 3.47.

I need a formula to calculate the time (in hours/fractions of an hour) that is "covered" for each hour of the day between a range of times. In other words, I have a "START TIME" and an "END TIME" and for each hour of the 24-hour clock, I want to know how much time this range covers.

For example, if my start time is 3:30am and my end time is 5:15am, for the 3am hour, the formula would return 0.5 hours, for the 4am hour it would return 1.0 hours, for the 5am hour it would return 0.25 hours, and for all other hours it would return 0.0 hours. The range of START TIME and END TIME can be up to 24 hours (but not more), but the tricky part is that the START TIME can be on the day BEFORE the END TIME (e.g., START TIME of 10:35pm and END TIME of 5:45pm the next day).

I found a formula for calculating time in the HH:MM AM/PM

=IF(B1<A1,B1+1,B1)-A1

This formula was to give me total hours in the cell for which it is entered, and cell format for the formula was in military format.

I cannot find this post. The formula worked in OpenOffice Calc program, but when it came to converting to excel, I came up with #value!

I want to enter the time in 12 hour format and using am/pm to designate. I am making it for someone to make work schedules with and they do not know military time.

I have a spreadsheet that I use to track my stocks. I have installed a third party add-in that goes out to the internet and grabs various stock information. But, when you are pulling info on about 30 stocks and getting info like name, price, dividend, div pay date and such, it slows the spread sheet down tremendously. Is there a way to keep the value in the cell and change it only during a certain time period such as 5 minutes before the top of the hour to five minutes after the top of the hour.

I am trying to calculate the the breakdown time for each hour in the factory. I have the start time and finish time of each breakdown. There are 8 hours in a shift starting at 6:45. So hour 1 would be (6:45-7:45), hour 2 (7:45-8:45). If the machine breaks down between 7:06 and 8:20 what will be the amount of time lost in each hour? In this example it would be 39 mins in hour 1 and 35 mins in hours 2. How I can achieve this result?

I am trying to calculate downtime for a Service Level Agreement.

The data that I have is the start date/time and the resolved date/time for an incident.

The data are in the format - 1/1/2008 03:32 AM. The incidents may occur at any time but downtime is calculated only business hours and excludes weekends. I may be required to exclude holidays but that is not a hard requirement right now. What I must be able to specify are the working hours.

As example(s)

- if an incident is generated on 1/2/2008 4:00 PM and resolved at 1/3/2008 11:00 AM then the downtime is 4 hours.

- if an incident is generated on 1/12/2008 4:00 PM (which is a Sat) and resolved at 1/14/2008 11:00 AM (which is Monday) then the downtime is 3 hours.

The above assumes working hours are 8:00 AM through 5:00 PM.

I have tried using the NETWORKDAYS and WORKDAY functions with little success.

I get data in the form of an .xls worksheet that includes a date column and an "hour" column. The hour column contains 1-2 digits representing the hour of the day (0-23). I need to be able to combine the date and time fields for graphing, searching, and sorting the data. No matter what I try, I can't get excel to recognize the hour as the time of day (e.g. 2 = 2:00am, 16 = 4:00PM, etc). The data sets tend to be large and I get new data in the form of new .xls files often, so a script to convert the data is probably not a good solution.
