Using Cell Values As Partial Spreadsheet References In Formulas

Feb 21, 2014

I've attached a sample document of my data layout. On the Compare tab, I'd like to build a sumif formula that takes the data in column B and uses it to reference the other tabs without having to use a large nested IF statement. For example, on the Compare tab, in cell C2, the formula will know to look at the "JAN MONTH" tab because B2 says "JAN", then the rest of the sumif would be looking at the data in column A and matching it with the data in column A in the correct tab.

Using Cell References In File Paths For Formulas To Create Dynamic Formulas

Dec 3, 2013

I am using a lot of linked reports that have to be rewritten each month. For example smaller formulas look like this:

=('S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING201311 November[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]Production Parts'!B$228*2)+'S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING201311 November[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]Production Parts'!B$262+'S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING201311 November[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]Production Parts'!B$292

What I want to do is extract the file path from the above formula and make it a composite of several cell references.

So what I need is to have a cell where they can change the month and another where we can change the year. So I set up several named cells that look like this:

_MONTH =11 November
_YEAR =2013
_JOBCARD ='S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING
_PATH =_JOBCARD & _YEAR &"" &_MONTH

I tried several versions, I am hoping for something like this:

=('_PATH &"[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]"Production Parts'!B$228*2)+'_PATH &"[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]"Production Parts'!B$262+'_PATH &"[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]"Production Parts'!B$292

Formulas To Hide Partial Concatenate Data And Determining Two Other Formulas

Dec 11, 2013

I'm trying to automate creating certain keyword combinations I need, based off of the values I input into reference cells in columns A - E; the goal is to compile a list of keywords which I will then use to track my rankings in search engines.

I'm looking to only output 500 keywords, so some of the cells in columns A, B, C & E will not contain data (column D will always have a primary Geo-target listed). This results in some of the concatenate formulas I've created outputting partial data (i.e. if there is no data in cell A10, and cell D2 contains the word "Knoxville", then cell I10 will output the data, "Knoxville "). How can I setup conditioning formatting or a formula so that these auto-generated cells appear blank if one of the reference cells has no data within it?The reason why I need the above to work is because I want to setup a formula that automatically counts the # of keyword combinations created by the data entered into any of the reference cells. With the partial combinations being listed, it skews my data. Which leads me to my next question: what is the best formula for counting the # of cells containing a full keyword combination from any of the cells listed in columns G - O (minus the data in the header cells; i.e. G1, H1, etc...)?Lastly, is there a formula I could use that would then aggregate all of the full keyword combinations within the "Complete Keyword List" column (column P)?

Converting Absolute References To Relative References In Formulas?

Feb 10, 2014

I set up formulas to count text characters in a range of cells. I'm tracking attendance and payments for a small yoga studio.

All I need to do is count "Y"s for prepaid attendance and "DI"s for drop-ins. I have the formulas working but they are absolute so inserting a row will break my sheet.

=COUNTIF(E14:Z14,"*Y*")
=COUNTIF(E11:Z11,"*DI*")

Copy Formulas With Cell References

Jan 12, 2009

I have a formula that references data on another spreadsheet with multiple worksheets. I have a new worksheet for each month (Jan, Feb, Mar, ...).

How can I copy formulas in series that keep the cell references the same, but change to the appropriate month. So for the forumula below, I want to fill a series down in a column to represent each month.

Right now I have to go in and edit it to change the month to the next month (i.e. change Jan to Feb.)

An example of the formula is below. In this case, I would want to fill the series down a column and have the months update in series but keep the cell reference the same.

=SUM('[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$M$19,'[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$N$19,'[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$Q$19,'[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$L$47,'[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$K$47,'[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$S$47)

Copy Formulas While Keeping Cell References

Sep 1, 2009

I need to copy a bunch of cells that contain formulas without altering the cell references. I know I could change each formula to contain absolute cell references, then copy and paste special with formulas, but this is alot of work, and following that I'd need to change the references back again from absolute to relative in both locations. So, is there a way to quickly copy and paste formulas in multiple cells without altering the cell references?

Macro To Add Empty Row And Partial Copy Formulas

Apr 5, 2012

I am looking for a macro that will insert a new row and copies the formulas from the row above, but not from all the columns.

This is the current situation:

A
B
C
D
E
F
G
H
I
J
K
L
M

Name
Project Nr.
Work Order
hours

[Code] ......

What I want is that if column G contains "11374340" an empty row will be inserted above and the formulas from column E until M to be copied a row down. And the sum function in the last row of M needs to be changed automaticly as well (if possible).

I already have the macro to insert a new empty row which is as follows:

Sub InsertRows()
Dim i, LastRow
LastRow = Range("G" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row
For i = LastRow To 1 Step -1
If Cells(i, "G").Value = "11374340" Then
Cells(i, "G").EntireRow.Insert
End If
Next
End Sub

Cell References As Values ..

Aug 9, 2009

If I have values in cell B5:B8

B5=0
B6=3
B7=7
B8=10

I want to have a standing formula in Cells J2:M2 that will always reflect whats in those cells. I don't want to use transpose nor do I wnat something as simple as J2=+B5,K2=+B6,etc.

I would like to know if there is a formula that would add the values in a certain row to a cell

For instance:

I want J2 to reflect what is in B5 AND I want K2 To reflect what is in B5 plus a row which would be the value in B6. I have a reason for doing this as I am going to import 120
ranges beginning at a1 to I30 on each sheet while having the sheet I am importing to have these formulas starting at J2.

I tried using +cellnumber+row, but it just gave me the row number and not the actual value in that cell.

Conditionally Format Cell Using Absolute Values And Relative Cell References?

Below is my code which isn't formatting the cells it's suppossed to. It looks like it isn't doing anything. I think the issue might be with the highlighted section of my code, but when I go to "Manage" my rules for conditional formatting, excel references the appropriate cell under the "Applies to" section. I am using relative cell references for for the majority of the rest of the code and this section follows a section that selects the correct cell for this conditional format.

Code:

Table References Based On Cell Values?

Aug 13, 2012

I'm trying to put together a dashboard that is referencing a table. Now the dash board I would like to have it so I can change a value and the details will update based off of my selection. This is all drived off of named ranges and have that working. The part I don't have working is dynamically changing what part of the table is being referenced to.

i.e. Say i have modeling quality I have a formula that looks like this

=SMALL(IF(Table1[[#All],[Modeling Quality]]=$D$12,ROW(Table1[[#All],[Modeling Quality]])),ROW($M1))

Which works perfectly. However if I change modeling quality to say modeling experience which has different criteria i need the formula to look like this

=SMALL(IF(Table1[[#All],[Modeling Experience]]=$D$12,ROW(Table1[[#All],[Modeling Experience]])),ROW($M1))

Is there a way I can drive the table reference from a cell selection? I've tried referencing them by manually typing in the cell address to no avail.

Cells Values For External Cell References

Apr 17, 2008

Is there a way of writing a formula to create a reference to an external spreadsheet? I have a folder containing 100s of workbooks all based upon a template. I can create a directory listing of this folder using a macro within Excel.

e.g.
Directory listing
C:My DocumentsReturnsFile1.xls
C:My DocumentsReturnsFile2.xls
C:My DocumentsReturnsFile3.xls

I would then like to use this list of file paths to create links to several different cells within worksheets contained in each of these. I know that if I did this manually for each worksheet the formula would be a variation on =[C:My DocumentsReturnsFile1.xls]Sheet!Cell. Is there a way that I can automatically create these external references? i.e using values in column A (directory listing) to create many external references, say in column B

I use my directory list and then a formula or macro populates automatically these external references? The file names in the directory change daily (100s of worksheets!) so I don't want to have to manually input these each time. If the folder containing the workbooks was held on an intranet would there be a similar solution?

Daily Spreadsheet References

Oct 28, 2009

I have a spreadsheet that needs to reference another spreadsheet to obtain a daily target figure. Unfortunately the way the system is set up at work, each day of the year has it's own spreadsheet in it's own folder, and the figure I need needs to be updated each day from the corresponding spreadsheet.

At the moment I simply have 366 (a spare unused one for leap years) different formulas to compare dates and return the figure from todays date. The downside here is that it takes excel 50 seconds to open the spreadsheet because of this, so I assume it's checking all of these figures in all those spreadsheets instead of just the one that's true.

so I have =IF(E2=AF2,spreadsheet address,0) Where E2 is todays date and AF2 is a date from a list.

What I'd like is a method to do something similar but with one or two formulas that will simply update the address of the file I need the figure from based on what date it is so that it will only look at one spreadsheet when it opens instead of all 365.

I tried the following:
IF(E$2=AF302,('C:spreadsheets('H:[Punch 2 Spreadsheet.xlsb]Punch 2 Metrics'!Z$28)[UVS Cell WEB.xlsx]Punch 2'!B$3)/1000,#N/A)

Where the section in bold replaces the part of the address with the date folders (20091091) for example, and instead has a cell reference which is formatted to replace this section and updates automatically each day.

It does not work obviosuly and I wanted to know I'm just not formatting the formula correctly or if this idea is a dead end.

Circular References - Formulas Relating To Other Sheets

Jun 21, 2013

I am trying to make a formula use an IF statement to identify different cells on a different sheet to pull raw data from.

However I've never tried formulas involving multiple sheets before.

This is the formula i get a circular reference for =IF('Store Input'!I6:J6=Lewis,(('Store Input'!C6:D6/1.2)/100*0.75))

I am not entirely sure what im doing thats causing confusion but ill explain the desired effect.

If a Cell has a value of "Name" then take data from cell "X" and do calculation /1.2 /100 *0.75 on a separate sheet.

Further more i want it to apply to multiple cell possibilities. so like the one above except repeated on different cells.

So as well as the above, i want it to perform the same operation for a set of cells further to its right and so and so forth.

Deleting Cell Values But Not Formulas?

For example, imagine cell A1 will contain the full payoff of a loan. I want to be able to put a settlement offer in B1 and have C1 populate the percentage of the payoff that is. At the same time, I want to be able to delete the settlement offer in B1 and put a percentage in C1 and have it calculate that settlement offer in B1. The calculations/formulas to do these problems is simple, but what I need is to not lose the formulas in B1 and C1 if I were to go back and forth entering settlement offers vs settlement percentages.

Vlookup Of Partial Matching Values

Tab 2 is a sheet with multiple colums of data. I need tab 2 to look at the data in tab 1 and display the value of each part number in a specific column that has corresponding part numbers but are 15 characters in length. The part numbers in tab 1 are the last 6 characters of the part numbers in tab 2.

I have been trying to use vlookup in tab 2 but it won't work because the column of part numbers in tab 2 is a full part number and the part numbers in tab 1 are only a partial part number (last 6 characters of part number in tab 2).

Tab 1 is a worksheet that is created from a Access query of a sql database. I cannot control the abbreviated part number that the query generates.

Tab 2 part numbers (the full 15 character number) also is generated from another access query which I also can't control.

Is there any way I can have tab 2 sheet look at the data in tab 1 and display the values for the part numbers in tab 2.

Finding Partial Strings From Array Of Values?

I have a table with three columns, column 1 is a list of names, column 2 is where I want my result to appear, and column 3 has my array of search values. Column 1 and 2 could have any number of rows with values, but column 3 will have less values. It looks like this if it's working right:

Item List
Result
Search List

[Code].....

What I am trying to do is for each cell in column 1, I want to see if there is a matching value in column 3 - it has to be either an exact match or a partial match (i.e. the string appears somewhere in the values of column 1).

I have been trying to use MATCH like this:

=ISNUMBER(MATCH($A2,$C:$C,0))

but it does not return true unless the match is exact.

way to get these partial string matches to work?
