VLOOKUP To Match Only Part Of The Text

Feb 5, 2010

Please help me get VLOOKUP to match only part of the text. I have the following situation:

In "sheet1":
___A________________B______C
1__USER3 (12346ar)___0______411 PCS
2__USER2 (45676ad)___0______313 PCS
3__USER5 (456ff)______0______112 PCS
4__USER8 (1246ew)____0______515 PCS

In "sheet2":
___A_________B________C______D
1__USER8____0_________0______=VLOOKUP(A1,'SHEET1'!$A:$C,3,0)*5

In "sheet2" , D1 I'll get #N/A if I do not type the complete name ( USER8 (1246ew) ). Is there a way to ignore this part " (1246ew)" and match only the name of the user?

Also when matching "515 PCS" can it automatically remove the " PCS" part so I can use only the number to make calculations?

Vlookup On Part Of The Text In A Cell.

Jun 18, 2009

I am trying to do a vlookup and am having soem issues. I have data like this in the cell i am using as the reference: "60030 - COLUMBUS, OH". The first column of the range I am searching would have "60030" in it. What i need to know is how do I get the vlookup to just reference the first 5 digits in the reference cell? As you can see by the formula below, I set the logical value to true hoping that it would find the closest value, but it did not work. =VLOOKUP(A7,sdoalign,3,TRUE)

Vlookup On Only Part Of A Text/number String

I am trying to reference a Name of a place from an order number. To illustrate, University Park, IL can have an order # of 6598641373. The only thing is, all I need to reference is the first four digits, 6598. The other worksheet does not have city and state names, they only have the order #s.

Vlookup - Match All Text In Column

Feb 12, 2007

I have a worksheet that has over 5000 rows - what i need is to find all rows that contain " Total - content targeting" in column 3 & add the number on each corresponding row (column 3 from text match). Below is what i have managed to create,

=VLOOKUP("Total - content targeting",'Google Traffic UK'!C7:Q5000,3,FALSE)

However this only finds the first instance on "Total - content targeting". My speadsheet contains several of these which i need to add up.

how i might change my code to allow all instances of Content targeting to add?

VLOOKUP With INDIRECT (become Dynamic As The Table Array Part Of The Vlookup Will Change)

Aug 18, 2009

I have a Vlookup which I want to modify so that it can become dynamic as the table array part of the vlookup will change.

So the basic vlookup is as follows:
=VLOOKUP($R$3,ATTRIBUTION_FACTSET!$M$60:$P$73,2,0)
but the data I am looking for wont always be in the range M60:P73.

So I tried to make it dynamic by doing the following:
=VLOOKUP($R$3,INDIRECT("ATTRIBUTION_FACTSET"&"!M"&U1&":P"&V1),2,FALSE)
The idea being that U1 and V1 would be numbers that can change so in this case U1 would equal 60 and V1 would equal 73

This vlookup is giving me #N/A and no matter how I modify it I cannot get it to work.

How To Apply Categories Based On Partial Text Match Like Vlookup

Jan 17, 2013

I do PPC work and you can export query data from Adwords with Column A being the actual search query. Then column B - E are impressions, clicks, cost & conversions (from each query). In this example, cell A1 might be running shoes, cell A2 might be walking shoes, cell A3 is running pants, and cell A4 is baseball pants. I want to add a new column (F) that does product category groupings based on partial text matches in column A. For example, anything that includes the text string shoe or shoes should be labeled as shoes in column F. Similarly, all queries that contain the characters pant would be listed as product category pants in column F.

Currently I do this manually by conditional formatting on column A for contains text and then color the cells. Then I sort by cell colors. Then I manually type in the product category into F for each color block in A. Needless to say, this is slow and manual.

What I would prefer is to have a master table (like a vlookup) on sheet 2 where column A is the list of partial text matches and column B is the product category to be returned if that the partial text in sheet 2 column A is found in the query list on sheet 1 column A. This way, on sheet 2 I could have cell A1 sneaker, cell A2 shoe, cell B1 shoes, cell B2 shoes, etc to manage the correlation between text strings and product category groupings.

Basically I want a formula to put in the cells on sheet 1 in column F that searches all of column A on sheet 1, looking for partial text matches from column A on sheet 2 and returning corresponding product category in column B on sheet 2.

Remove First Part Of String Of Text And Keep The Second Part?

Feb 12, 2014

Is there any way to remove the first part of a string of text in a cell and save the second part?

The first part of the text string is a team code that has a variable number of numbers, capital letters and sometimes spaces. The second part of the text string is a variable number of words in a team name that all start with a capital letter and have lower case letters. Every line has a different team code and team name.

The original spreadsheet also has a column with just team code. Is there a way of using this column to "subtract" the team code from the text string to just leave the team name?

Match Part Of Full Name

Apr 24, 2012

I am looking to get a user's email address.

On Sheet A (Foreseen Absences) I have users enter their own data.
On Sheet B (email addresses) I have users' full names and email addresses.

I have the following formula entered on Sheet A to get the user's email address: =vlookup(C173,'email addresses'!A:C,3,0)

This works fine for staff who enter their full names, but I've got a few who are entering things like: G. Thoms or Marie which results in a #NA error.

Is there an easy way to update this formula to account for these instances?

VLookup To Pivot Table Using Match Function - Returns Error If Can't Find Match Value

Mar 11, 2014

I am having some trouble getting a formula to work. I am building a report that pulls figures from a pivot table in another workbook. I am using a vlookup with match function to get the column index to find the relevant data I want. Where I need to add two columns together I am using sum, with the vlookup & match formulas nested in them e.g.:

=SUM(VLOOKUP(F13,'[PIVOT 156.xlsx]PIVOT'!$C:$AQ,MATCH("FAID",'[PIVOT 156.xlsx]PIVOT'!$C$6:$AQ$6,0),FALSE),VLOOKUP(F13,'[PIVOT 156.xlsx]PIVOT'!$C:$AQ,MATCH("COMM",'[PIVOT 156.xlsx]PIVOT'!$C$6:$AQ$6,0),FALSE),VLOOKUP(F13,'[PIVOT 156.xlsx]PIVOT'!$C:$AQ,MATCH("BPCM",'[PIVOT 156.xlsx]PIVOT'!$C$6:$AQ$6,0),FALSE),VLOOKUP(F13,'[PIVOT 156.xlsx]PIVOT'!$C:$AQ,MATCH("COMD",'[PIVOT 156.xlsx]PIVOT'!$C$6:$AQ$6,0),FALSE))

Where:
F13 = Employee number
Column C on the pivot 156 workbook is where the employee number is based.
The Match formula is then getting the column index from the column headings of the pivot table ie. "FAID"

This in itself works fine, as long as it finds a match in the column headings. This is where i get the error as in the above function "COMD" is not in the pivot table. However I need to keep it included as it may appear on a future pivot table. Is there a way of getting the sum function to complete even though later in the formula it can't complete the vlookup? So it will ignore it, or assume the value is zero if it can't find it? The formula probably needs to do this for all the vlookups as some headings may drop off in future pivot tables.

VLOOKUP / INDEX / MATCH Function: Match Data From 2 Independent Sets??

I am trying to match data from 2 independent sets, formatted slightly differently so not sure which function would work best for me. From the attached file, I am trying to match the date and time stamp (in cell A1) with that from the other data (in this example in cell E1) and return the data (from cell F1) to cell C1. So basically any date and time stamp before 04/03/09 04:00 will return a value of 44 (this value should appear, therefore in cells C1 - C30)

Criteria To Match Part Of String

Dec 3, 2008

I have a worksheet that I need to filter on 8 columns. I need to do this in the form (Col A = Bob OR SAM) AND (Col B = Apple OR Pear OR Banana) AND... etc for 8 columns.

I started this thread and we reached the conclusion that I needed either a macro to list out all the possible combinations on separate lines, or a complex criteria formula.

I'm trying to put together the complex criteria, but I am further stumped by the fact that some of the columns contain multiple terms with comma delimiters, so I'm trying to match part of a string, rather than a whole string, so the usual = ISNUMBER(MATCH(Sheet1!A2,Sheet2!$A:$A,0)) won't work. I tried using =ISNUMBER(FIND(Sheet2!$A:$A,Sheet1!A2)) instead, but I think this fails because it should be an array formula. I tried normal entering and CSE entering, and neither work, so I think this is a dead end.

VLOOKUP And SUM On Part Of String?

Apr 13, 2012

My sheet contains values like these:

A/5
A/3
B/4

What I want to do is sum all the values after the / for a particalur value before the /:

A 8
B 4

I already tried VLOOKUP, but this function wants you to point to a certain cell to return instead of a just a part of the cell. It should return 5 for the first row to be able to perform a sum for every value of A.

How can I perform such a calculation without having to copy the values to separate cells? Can I contain all of this in one function?

VLOOKUP For Part Of A String

Oct 4, 2012

Im sure this cant be done because it defies the logic of the LOOKUP function but I know there are some clever people on here so i thought id ask!!

I have 2 workbooks containing similar data from 2 different sources; the one common data item in both is a clients address but have the age old problem of data quality, which needs sorting eventually but i need a quick fix!

In workbook one for example the address will be recorded as RUSKIN RD

In workbook two the address will be recorded as RUSKIN ROAD

A simple look up wont work obviously as the 2 values dont match, then i thought of using the LEFT function but again this goes against the logic of the VLOOKUP.

The * is being interpreted as a character, is there a way to perform the Vlookup function using a wildcard? Or just ignoring the first 4 characters of the cells in the array would work.

NB Sierra
NB Pierce

Other than formula stated above, I've also tried with Isnumber(search), etc but all return errors.

VLOOKUP / INDEX And MATCH To Return All Values That Match

Feb 4, 2014

I have two sheets of data , sheet A and Sheet B.

Sheet B contains a column called "Name" and for each name, and for each name there are corresponding numbers. In sheet A, I have a "list of interest" in column A. What i want to do look through the data in sheetB to find a match from the list of interest and return the corresponding letters, located in column A.

I have filled out the first two rows of results that should be returned as an example.

One idea i had was to put a vlookup formula in each column result 1 to result 6 so i can catch all 6 "Serves" columns from column B, but there may be duplicates in the serve columns and vlookup only reports the first match.

I am needed to compare part numbers between the 2 sheets and the qty of each. So far I have it where it matches the part numbers and turns the ones I don't have in the model red. Now I'm trying to match the part numbers and pull the qty of said part from sheet 2, the imported one, and compare it to the to the qty in the 1st. All I really need to accomplish is matching the part numbers then copying the qty from sheet 2 to sheet 1 onto a new cell of the matched part number.

Delete Rows If Column Has Fewer Than X Matches To Part String Match

May 5, 2008

I have data sets on multiple worksheets within a workbook (over 70). Based on the begining of a string, I need to count all instances with that begining, and if there are fewer than 12 instances, delete the entire row.

Data set example:

In this example, I need to count each instance of rows starting with 1/* - 9/*, and delete rows as mentioned. In other data sets the string might start Gi1/*, and so on. In the following code, if I do not loop, and only test against 1 value type, and ONLY run it once, it works. As soone as I try to loop through all possibilities, or run the macro a second time, it blanks out the entire worksheet, starting at row 3.

Dim c As Long
c = Worksheets(i).Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row
With Range("A3:A" & c)
If Application.WorksheetFunction.CountIf(Worksheets(i).Columns(1), "1/*") < 12 Then
. AutoFilter field:=1, Criteria1:="1/*"
.Offset(1).Resize(.Rows.Count - 1, 1).EntireRow.Delete
.AutoFilter

I have also tried to concatenate a variable with my CountIf criteria, but that fails miserably.

Putting Formula In The Sentence Part Of IF / ISNA / VLOOKUP String

May 21, 2013

I have been using an IF,ISNA,VLOOKUP formula as follows which I am sure you are all familiar with :

=IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(K7,Orig!A7:B35,COLUMNS(B7:B35)+1,0)),"",VLOOKUP(K7,Orig!A7:B35,COLUMNS(B7:B35)+1,0))

This formula works correctly, displaying the lookup value for K7. My query is between the"" I can place text to display when K7 is blank and this works correctly too. However I would like to place a formula in here. The formula is VLOOKUP(I7,Orig!A7:B35,COLUMNS(B7:B35)+1,0 i.e. the lookup value is now I7 and not K7 when K7 is blank.

I have tried the following and variations based on what I know but they return errors.

=IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(K7,Orig!A7:B35,COLUMNS(B7:B35)+1,0)),(""& VLOOKUP(K7,Orig!A7:B35,COLUMNS(B7:B35)+1,0),VLOOKUP(K7,Orig!A7:B35,COLUMNS(B7:B35)+1,0))

Any better way of using I7 as the lookup value when K7 is blank.
