Sorting Of Results Using Index / Match / Large And Other Formulas?

Jul 16, 2012

how to return the top 5 results in a set of data.

In a nutshell, I have data that needs to be sorted but some intermediate to advanced (to me) excel formula needs to be used to sort the ranking properly. I've already used index, match and large but it does not suffice.

Formulas By Using VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, INDEX&MATCH Separately

Oct 8, 2009

I have this table

.......A.....B.....C....D
1.....I......a.....d.....g

2.....II.....b.....e.....h

3.....III....c.....f......i

As you can see, the number I has a,d,and g, II has b,e,and h, and III has c, f, and i

I want to make formula that if I make the input g it would return I, f would return III, and c would return III, and so on

I want to make four formulas by using VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, INDEX&MATCH separately.

Using INDEX & MATCH With MAX And LARGE

Mar 31, 2008

I have an Excel sheet on which I need to calculate the largest, 2nd largest and 3rd largest volumes from the range of data.

I've done this using an INDEX and MATCH formula to return the Status # for the largest, 2nd and 3rd largest volumes. So the formulas are:

Rank 1
=INDEX(B3:G3,MATCH(MAX(B3:G3),B3:G3,0))

Rank 2
=INDEX(B3:G3,MATCH(LARGE(B3:G3,2),B3:G3,0))

Rank 3
=INDEX(B3:G3,MATCH(LARGE(B3:G3,3),B3:G3,0))

However when the volumes are the same the formula returns the same Status # for both. For example below, for Site 1; Status 3 is ranked 1st and then Status 1 is ranked 2nd, for the 3rd rank, the formula is returning Status 1 again.

Is there any way of changing the formula to return Status 4 as the 3rd ranked instead of returning Status 1 again?

CUSTOM SORTING Will Not Work On Table With INDEX Formulas

Jan 28, 2014

Problem we are having with sorting a table.

The table (A1:E10) was created by pulling data from another worksheet using INDEX and ARRAY formulas.

We inserted 6 columns to move the table over to G1:K10 (used column F to space the two tables).

We then duplicated the table: cell A1=G1, B1=H1, ...., E1=K1 and dragged the formulas down. We now have a duplicate table that we want to sort.

We choose CUSTOM SORT and choose 2 levels of sorting ... column A and column C.

PROBLEM: The ARRAY formulation evidently overrides the sort function because the table remains as it was when the sorting command is executed.

Is there a way to bring the data from table G1:K10 over to table A1:E10 in a manner that will allow sorting??

Using LARGE Formula With Index / Match To Pull Values When There Are Duplicates

Sep 13, 2012

I am attempting to use the LARGE formula to pull the top 3-5 percentages out of a field of 50-100, while using the INDEX/MATCH function to pull the corresponding "descriptor" that is associated with those top 3-5 percentages. (I need to do this across multiple data sets, but I can't get past this 'duplicate' issue) However, I am running into the problem when there are 2 percentages that are identical (WH 14 and WH 16 in pasted text below), then the INDEX/MATCH function only pulls the 1st "descriptor" and doesn't continue down to the Duplicate. how to tell excel to move to the next set of duplicate data and match the 'descriptor' to that data?

I have attached a file that should show what I am trying to do. These are the formulas I am using right now, pulled down into the 3 cells below them to get the top 3.

Gather Countries From List Based On Sum (Index / Match / Large / Sumif)

Jul 2, 2013

I have a table of sales by month per account. Each account has an associated country, but there may be many duplicates of each country per month.

I want to create a formula which indexes the country field and gives me the country with the highest total sum for a specified date range. I'd like to be able to drag the formula down and have the country with the highest sales, then the second highest, and third highest, and so-on. Column ranges are specified below.

I was thinking of using an array function utilizing index, large, sumif, and match, but I am getting stuck. I'm honestly not sure if what I'm looking for is even possible, but in Excel, everything is possible, so there has to be a way!

Reconciling Large Amount Of Data When VLookup And Match / Index Not Ideal

Nov 12, 2013

I need a little coaching on big data. I have two reports, one from a production system the other from the invoicing system. I need to reconcile the two reports to ensure our invoicing ties out to production. At this time I am focusing on 1 particular item code, but there are potentially hundreds of item codes.

I have 1 Item Code.
I have a around a hundred invoices. (Sample 100)
I have a few hundred different customers. (Sample 100)
I have several hundred lines of billing data. (Sample 650)
I have several thousand lines of production data. (Sample 40,000)
In the billing system, per invoice I might have 1 or more billing lines for this item, usually no more than 2.
In the production system, per invoice I might have 5 to 50 or more production lines for this item per invoice.

Example
Prod System:
30 lines of data has a run amount and a total run amount for each line.

I am looking for tools to reconcile this data. VLookup and Index/Matching is not cutting it. VLOOKUP does not move beyond the first line found. Index/Matching wants to add all the prod together. I can get subtotals easy enough. I have tried Concatenation, but when it takes multiple production data lines to equal 1 billing line, this does not work. I needs some thing that can look at the Qty on a billing invoice and tie it out to various lines of production data to identify which production jobs went on that line of the invoice.

Here is a sample. These are fairly easy to resolve, but others are not so easy due to number of production and billing rows.

Invoice number
Billing item
Est. Quantity
Actual quantity
Billable Qty
Sales order
Position number
Sequence
Agreement
Billing source
Description

Can Index Or Match Return Multiple Results

Nov 27, 2006

I've spent the last week trying to do the following, with little to no success....and I'm running out of hair to pull out!!

I have a worksheet (let's call it DATA) with the following column headers:
* Site Name
* Year Initiated
* Status

plus a whole bunch of other columns of information.

On a separate worksheet (let's call it RESULTS) I'm trying to create a summary of all the Site Names where the Year Initiated = "2004" and the Status = "Active". There will be multiple occurences where this is true.

I then want to create further results where the year = 2005, 2006, etc., etc. I've been trying to use the INDEX function with variations of MATCH, SMALL, ROW, etc., etc., but so far, no luck.

Advanced Filtering is not an option as I need to do further manipulating of the results on the RESULTS worksheet.

Index And Match Formulas

Or at least that is my intent. However when I change C6 to 6 I get an N/A. When it is 5 based on 15,000 it enters $2,353.73 but according to my table it should be $2,710.23 I am having the same issue with I6. Based on 15,000 it should enter $190. Where did I go wrong.

Execute Formula Based On Index Match Results?

I have a table with Dynamic Headings and Expanding rows, that's setup like below: The formula in the Qty column would produce a "0", if the result of the Index Match has a blank. For example in a different table the reference cell would have "Heading3". Therefore the results in the Qty column would be like example below. The products in the table below are like 0's and 1's to trigger the formula to calculate with the variables, or give a zero. If the Index Match found "Heading2" the results would be based on cells under "Heading2 Column" etc.

Retrieving Nth Results From Index Match Using Wildcard Search Term

Jun 9, 2014

I am building somewhat of a rudimentary search engine that looks for a name, address or unique identifier, using an Index Match formula that searches with a wild card:

=INDEX(Name,MATCH("*"&F3&"*",Name,0))

"Name": is the defined name for column C on a separate sheet.
F3: is "search field"

The current formula (above), only returns the first match. The source data is only 927 lines so not overly large. I would like to have an additional page that will show the potential results from the wildcard search via a formula. Therefore needing results; 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. from the Index Match. I have searched high and low for solutions but I have found none in regards to retrieving multiple results from a wildcard search, only on a specific term.

Multiple Index Match Formulas Instead Of Static If Vlookup?

Apr 10, 2014

I attached a file containing two sheets. The first sheet is called Input on this sheet there are several categories of which I displayed the first three on. My ultimate goal is to get the Input per category broken down horizontally over the line-items on the Output sheet. Every category contains several line items to which costs are attached (f.e. in category 10, line item 4000, the costs are 33,000$ and so on).

The problem is that every month the costs are changing per line-item, but also the number of line items per category will change due to the fact that the line-items are only displayed if there are in a specific month costs booked to the line-item. In other words sometimes line-items are added due to costs booked at the line-item, but if in one month there are no costs booked at the line-item it disappears from the overview. A formula containing: '=if(category=10,vlookup(... is to static due to the changing line-items.

Index With Multiple Match Formulas Returning Undesired Value?

Nov 20, 2012

I am building a tool for work, and in one of the sections of the main worksheet, I would like the cells to pull specific data from another worksheet that contains the results of a web query. The web query pulls a table of data, with a double header (rows 3 and 4). One column header is for the date and the other is for the time the data below corresponds to. There are also row titles along the left hand side.

I need a formula that will find the column that meets two conditions:

1) Today's date
2) A specific time (referenced from a cell on the main sheet)

It must then pull the data from the cell in that column that is in the row marked "Total".

Here is an example of the data set from the web query:

Excel 2010BCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZAAABACADAEAFAGAHAIAJAKALAMANAOAPAQARASATA
UAVAWAXAYAZBABBBCBDBEBFBGBHBIBJBKBLBMBNBOBPBQBRBSBT3
Total19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-
Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-
Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-
Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-
Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-

[Code]......

I have done quite a bit of looking on the web and tried out several different formulas/variations. I think I'm getting close, but just can't get it quite right. Here are a couple that seem close and their results:

=INDEX('Rodeo Data'!$D$5:$JS$50,MATCH("Total",'Rodeo Data'!$B$5:$B$50,0),MATCH(J3,'Rodeo Data'!$D$4:$JS$4,0)*AND(MATCH(TODAY(),'Rodeo Data'!$D$3:$JS$3,1)))

This one correctly finds the date and "Total" row, but seems to ignore the MATCH(J3,'Rodeo Data'!$D$4:$JS$4,0) section, which is designed to find the specific time in row 4. It returns either the "Total" row value from the first or last column with the correct date depending on which match type argument I use.

=INDEX('Rodeo Data'!$D$5:$JS$50,MATCH("Total",'Rodeo Data'!$B$5:$B$50,0),MATCH(TODAY()&O3,'Rodeo Data'!$D$3:$JS$3&'Rodeo Data'!$D$4:$JS$4,))

This one returns the standard "#N/A" error message.

I am using Windows 7 and Excel 2010. "Rodeo Data" is the name of the sheet that contains the web query data I have included. The J3 and O3 references are cells in the main worksheet that contain the time I want the match function to find.

The desired output from the formula would be if I referenced it to today (20 Nov 2012) and 19:45, it would return the value of 65,826.

It may also be worth noting that the number of columns and rows in the data set is dynamic.

Index And / Or Match Formula With Multiple Match Required To Return A Value

Jan 21, 2014

See attached file, "Rate Sample Index-Match Formula".

I need a formula to return the value at the cross section of two (2) lookup values that match. This formula will be input into column D under, "RATE" on the 1st tab, "TEST FILE".

In the 1st tab, "TEST FILE" there are a series of columns as follows;

A = Service
B = From
C = To
D = Rate

In the 2nd tab, "RATES" there is a series of rates with drivers From (green) & To (blue)

The formula needs to do the following;

1. Lookup the "From" value in column B on tab, "TEST FILE" and match to column B2:B59 on tab, "RATES" both highlighted in green
2. Then Lookup the "To" value in column C on tab, "TEST FILE" and match to row C1:BH1 on tab, "RATES" both highlighted in blue
3. Then return the value at the cross section of the match "From" (point 1 above) & "To" (point 2 above) in range C2:BH59

For Example;

The rate From SYD To CBR = 0.33. I have highlighted this in yellow on both tabs to show where the formula needs to lookup the data to return the answer.

Additionally, if we were to add service as an additional lookup match how would this work?

VLOOKUP / INDEX And MATCH To Return All Values That Match

I have two sheets of data , sheet A and Sheet B.

Sheet B contains a column called "Name" and for each name, and for each name there are corresponding numbers. In sheet A, I have a "list of interest" in column A. What i want to do look through the data in sheetB to find a match from the list of interest and return the corresponding letters, located in column A.

I have filled out the first two rows of results that should be returned as an example.

One idea i had was to put a vlookup formula in each column result 1 to result 6 so i can catch all 6 "Serves" columns from column B, but there may be duplicates in the serve columns and vlookup only reports the first match.
