Nesting "Indirect" References Into Formulas
Using a combination of "Cell" and "Indirect" commands, I can get cell-references (the name, like "A1"), but I can't figure out how to actually DO anything with them.
I keep trying to nest them inside of formulas, but I just can't get it to work. I've attached a sample workbook - there are two tabs.

Nesting Isnumber Search Formulas
I am using the ISNUMBER formula to verify if specific text is found in a string of text.
This formula worked when I only needed to find 1 particular brand name:
Now I need to have 2 different brand names ("BrandB" and "J & B") that need to return a "B" and all others should return a "C".
I found a thread regarding this same topic, but I could not get their solution to work for me.
They recommended using:
=IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("BrandB",RC)),"B","C")&", "&IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("J & B",RC)),"B","C")
The fact that my second brand name is written with spaces ("J & B") could be adding to the problem, I don't know. I thought replacing the "C" with another "IF(ISNUMBER" function should work, but I have been unsuccessful at writing a formula that doesn't cause run-time errors.
Formula To Increment Indirect References
I have a sheet which needs to look up one reference and then fill a table with the rest of them.
Cell A1 contains '0091 911'!$E$2 (cell E2 contains value 100)
Cell A2 contains =indirect(A1) and displays value 100
I need a formula which will auto fill the remaining cells in the table.
Cell A3 fills to contain '0091 911'!$E$3 (row +1)
Cell B2 fills to contain '0091 911'!$F$2 (column +1)
so it needs to fill the Indirect reference and not =indirect(A1),=indirect(A2)....
Data Validation INDIRECT & Relative References
I am setting up a spreadsheet for user data entry. I have one sheet set up as a template to enable users to copy the required data header cells to subsequent sheets and (the problem) - to different locations on the subsequent sheets. The template is using validated lists with the criteria drawn from the cell/list directly above the current list. For example, the cell in R11C2 is validated/refering to the range: =Campaign
The cell directly below this is validated/ filtered by: =Indirect(R11C2). This works great in the template, or any subsequent sheet in which the cells are all located in the same row/column. However, when the template is pasted in a higher row, the Indirect refers to R11C2 rather than referencing the cell directly above.
Copy Formulas With Cell References
I have a formula that references data on another spreadsheet with multiple worksheets. I have a new worksheet for each month (Jan, Feb, Mar, ...).
How can I copy formulas in series that keep the cell references the same, but change to the appropriate month. So for the forumula below, I want to fill a series down in a column to represent each month.
Right now I have to go in and edit it to change the month to the next month (i.e. change Jan to Feb.)
An example of the formula is below. In this case, I would want to fill the series down a column and have the months update in series but keep the cell reference the same.
=SUM('[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$M$19,'[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$N$19,'[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$Q$19,'[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$L$47,'[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$K$47,'[New 2008 sales report linked.xls]Jan'!$S$47)
Increase All Formulas Row/Column References
I need a script that will look for all the formulas in a sheet and increase them by a digit.
Lets say one that particular formula is =(A1-A2)/A2*100
I need the macro to change this to =(B1-B2)/B2*100
I have already programmed in a Find/Replace command, but realised that this would only work one time only. I need generic code that will bump them up each time rather than having to hard code the Find/Replace command for every single cell in the book.
Copy Formulas With References Changing
I am trying to do a simple copy and paste of number of cells A42:H76 to another sheet (in the same workbook) and have all the references stay when pasting to the new sheet. Instead when I paste it I get #Ref and the cell formulas no longer point to the right cell (they are all off by the same number because I did not paste the cells on the same row/column on the new sheet). Also, they don't refer to the older sheet where I want them to refer to.
Copy Formulas Without Changing Range References
I have a large workbook with LOTS of large formulas. However they dont contain $ characters before the ranges as I haven't needed to manipulate them til now. Now I am changing the sheet and I cant seem to move or copy these cells without the ranges whithin the formulas changing! Is there a way to do this? If not is there a way in VBA that I can check through selected cellls and enter a $ before all the ranges?
Copy Formulas While Keeping Cell References
I need to copy a bunch of cells that contain formulas without altering the cell references. I know I could change each formula to contain absolute cell references, then copy and paste special with formulas, but this is alot of work, and following that I'd need to change the references back again from absolute to relative in both locations. So, is there a way to quickly copy and paste formulas in multiple cells without altering the cell references?
Compare Formulas Ignoring Range References
I would like to rotate a Line Chart 90 degrees. I tried using an XY scatter chart but my Y-axis would be time values which are somewhat random but increasing. I would like to keep the spacing between plot points consistent (Y-axis spacing). I could simply use a number list for my Y-values to get consistent spacing but then I lose the time information. I don’t necessarily need the time value on the Y-axis if I could get the information to display when mousing over the plot point. Any ideas on how I could accomplish this?
Develop An Indirect Indirect Validation Drop Down List
I am trying to develop an Indirect Indirect Validation drop down list. Example, Building - Floor - Room, i.e. Select Building from a Validation drop down list. Then based upon the Building selected, select only the Floors applicable to the Building Selected. I am able to achieve this via an Indirect Validation drop down. However, when I attempt to then select the Rooms applicable to the Floor of the Building I selected, I can not produce an Indirect Validation off a previous Indirect Validation.
In the attachment, I have used Plant - Location - Room. I have name ranged the selections, and have used Validations Lists for Plant, and Indirect Validations for Location. The error occurs where I attempt to do an Indirect Validation for Room.
Changing Hard Coded Column References To Variable References
I have a number of statements within the Sheet Event Code (Excel 2007). Three times lately I have added a column and had to go back into the code and find all of the references that needed changing to reflect the new column.
I have been working on this for a couple of days and even tried EE, but to no success.
I have read that Defined Names / Constants should be used as often as possible, but even trying that, the VBA code errors out or "hangs up". Even within Bill Jalen's book (VBA and Macros 2007), there is nothing that addresses this, especially using Intersect.
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
Dim rng As Range
On Error GoTo mEnd
Set rng = Sheets("Log").[F14:F10000]
If Not Intersect(rng, Target) Is Nothing Then
If Target = "" Then
Structured References And With Cell References I Get A Column Of Zeros
It is suppose to be that if the employee is "FT" and has worked >=4 years the return is 15. But if the employee is FT and has worked 2 years but less than 4 years then it is suppose to return 10 (these are days off) Or if the employee is FT and has worked 1 year, but less than 2 then it should return 5 days off. And all the others in the column get no days off.
I have tried to do it with structured references and with cell references I get a column of zeros!
Nesting Sum If....
I tried using this array formula but it has an error in it and I can't figure out the error. =SUM(IF(Tracking!$C$2:$C$5000=$B$4,IF((Tracking!$D$2:$D$5000="15-M Eval")+(Tracking!$D$2:$D$5000="15-M TIC")+(Tracking!$D$2:$D$5000="Misd CRT"),IF(Tracking!$E$2:$E$5000=$A6,IF(Tracking!$J$2:$J$5000>=VALUE($B$1),IF(Tracking!$J$2:$J$5000<=V ALUE($B$2),1,0)))))) (I attached the workbook. In the CSTE worksheet, I didn't use control-shift-enter so you could see the formula.)
What I'm trying to do is come up with a formula that will sum if either of these three Legal Status types (15-M Eval, 15-M TIC, and Misd CRT) are present on the Tracking worksheet with a specified Evaluator within a certain date range. The formula works if I just want to find one Legal Status type. I also will want to come up with a formula that will sum if either of these five Legal Status types (15/30-F Eval, 15-F TIC, 1/90 CRT, 2/90 CRT, and 180 CRT) are present on the Tracking worksheet with a specified Evaluator within a certain date range. I tried researching if I could define a name that would sum these 3 Legal Status types but that didn't work either.
Im having some isses nesting two arguments together.
basically(ha, ha), id like to do the following operation in cell J9:
If the Actual Date (F9) is blank leave the cell blank, and if the actual date is blank is the target date is less than NOW(), leave it blank.
If the Actual date is not blank, do Actual minus Target, and if NOW() is greater then the target date, do now() minus target.
if(E9 < NOW(), ""
if(F9=<>, F9 -E9
I have attached a spreadsheet to illustrate.
Nesting If, And & Between Functions
I am trying to create a formula with mutiple criterias to come back with results of whether that person is Eligible or Not Eligible for stock. The criteria to be Eligible is as follows:
1) Hire Date before 1st March 2007
2) Band 1 and the performance review = Exceeded
3) If Band 2-5 then performance review must be either Achieved or Exceeded
See attached file for the example. I have got as far as the first 2 points but i am struggling with incorporating the last point.
VBA Nesting If Statements For Dates
I am having issues writing the VBA code for IF statements. I am essentially trying to nest IF statements within one another. I have it done through the regular If functions as seen in the attachment, but I cannot seem to get it to work with VBA.
I need it to work in VBA without knowing how many rows of data there are. In the attachment you will see the rules that I need the data follow, but here is an example. Essentially, depending upon how large cell C2 is, I need to add a certain amount of months to whatever is in E2.
=IF(C2="","",IF(C2<500000,DATE(YEAR(E2),MONTH(E2)+1,DAY(E2)),IF(AND(C2>=500000,C2<1000000),DATE(YEAR (E2),MONTH(E2)+1,DAY(E2)),IF(AND(C2>=1000000,C2<=2000000),DATE(YEAR(E2),MONTH(E2)+1,DAY(E2)),IF(AND( C2>2000000,D2="Critical"),DATE(YEAR(E2),MONTH(E2)+2,DAY(E2)),IF(C2>2000000,DATE(YEAR(E2),MONTH(E2)+1 ,DAY(E2)),"Reevaluate"))))))
Nesting If Statements With Vlookups
I know how to do a vlookup and I know how to do an if statement. I also know how to do an IF(ISERROR or IF(ISNA ....
However, I can not get this to work:
=IF(C73<7,VLOOKUP(D73,'Package Mix'!$G$39:$H$45,2,FALSE),IF(C73<13,VLOOKUP(D73,'Package Mix'!$G$6:$H$36,2,FALSE),IF(C73>23,VLOOKUP(D73,'Package Mix'!$G$48:$H$56,2,FALSE),"")))
I can not wrap my head around how to make this work w/ IF(ISNA ....
Also, why must you use < or > .... I actually want the numbers to be 6,12, and 24... However, it seems when I use an equal sign it fails.
Nesting A New Criteria In Sumif
I have the following Formula:
In this way I got the sum of all items located in column E wich have the same value than in B3 in Sheet 1....
How could I change the formula in the way that only returns the Values in Sheet2 E:E when (If equals to B2 and C2 in Sheet 1 then Sumif)
The value which I want to use to filter is in the same columns in both sheets
Nesting A Multiple IF Formula..
I had the first and third argument working properly but am running into difficulty when I tried to enter the middle formula.
If A1 + B1 = 0 then "0"
If A1 = 0 AND B1 is greater than 0 then give B1's value times .01
If neither of those are true Then A1 minus B1, divide the result by A1 and then multiply it by negative 1.
=IF((A1+B1=0),("0%")*OR,IF((A1=0 and B1>0),(B1*0.01),((A1-B1)/AI*-1)))
Nesting Countif: Get The Data ?
I have a new job a part of which is where I have to provide reports using data from excel 2003 sheets that are sent to me by someone else. I add my own formulas to get the data I need. One such bit of data is. How many rows have "yes" in col E and "w" in range M:V?
Nesting If And Match Functions
I've followed several tips on how to match these formulas, but somehow cannot make them work. I'm using Open office's version of excel. I need a formula that searches on 'tension downfall' for data in the first sheet, and then return a value corresponding to the row and column that match the input on the first sheet.
'tension downfall' shows a double entry table which shows amperage against length and returns a wire size. I would like to input amperage and length on two different cells and have the wire size needed for those values. Is it clear enough? I'm attaching my current work to make it a little bit clearer.
Hitting Nesting Limit
I'm building a model that based on the start date (cell C7) needs to display the month of the project (M1, M2, M3, M4, ... M12) under the appropriate calendar month (Dec-07, Jan-08, etc.). The formula below works great (E4 is the calendar month Dec-07 in this case, and when I drag the formula horizontally it updates (F4, G4, etc.). B33 through B44 are my month references M1, M2, M3, etc.)
Here's the problem: The below statement contains seven nested ifs and Excel won't let me add additional if statements. How else can this be accomplished?
Nesting Limit In 2007
I am trying to use a formula with 13 nested IFs in Excel 2007, which is supposed to allow up to 64 nestings. But I get a message that the formula "uses more levels of nesting than are allowed in the current format" whether I am using xlsx, xlsm or xlsb.
IF Function Nesting In Excel, Allows Only 7 Arguments?
=IF(E18>760,(">760"),(IF(E18>550,("550-760"),(IF(E18>365,("365-550"),(IF(E18>210,("210-365"),(IF(E18>120,("120-210"),(IF(E18>90,("90-120"),(IF(E18>60,("60-90"),(if (E18>30, ("1-30"), (0))))))))))))))))
If you try to use this it will not work, as excel takes only 7 arguments
can someone help me with this. Do any one know macro for the same.
if you use this formule it will work
Nesting Functions Of Match And Offset
Is it possible to nest the two functions of match & offset. I am working with two worksheets. One is a constant the other is building. I want to match a text from the first spreadsheet in the second sheet (otherwords I want to find that exact within the other spreadsheet) then I want to retreive the offset value to the right of the matched cell and place it in the constant worksheet where the formula is.
Sheet 1 Sheet2
Company: First Name: Company: Name:
Adamack's ? Adamack's Patrick
So if I put the formula where the ? mark is, I want to match the first company name on sheet 1, from the range in sheet 2, then I want to get the offset from that match 0,1 to give me the name patrick.
Nesting Isnumber Search Functions
I have this search function that works well: =IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("which is < ",E9)),"test ok", "not ok") my E9 cell contains the phase: "I have a number which is < 9, and which is positive..." E9 has "which is < ", then i get back "test ok"
My question is.... how can I do this multiple times within the same function/cell. i.e. if I wanted to search "which is < " and/or "positive" in the same cell, then i get back "test ok", "positive number") I keep trying all combinations to no avail, like: =IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("which is < ",E9)),"test ok", "not ok"), =IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("positive",E9)),"positive number", "no good")
Keep in mind I am using a numeric example, although I am using this function to check if part of a cell matches specific text...
Nesting Calculations Dependent On Previous Calculation
how to determine which "Gate" an employee has attained for product sales.
Example: Employee A sells each of the 4 products and has made or exceeded Gate 1, the result should show Gate 1. If they make or exceed each Gate 2 the result should show Gate 2 not Gate 1. Etc..
Note: All 4 products must meet or exceed a Gate to be valid for that Gate. So if employee A sells to Gate 3 level on all products but one, their Gate will be at the level of that one lower product. Clear as mud?
Below is my matrix shhowing the levels of each Gate.
11 to 12 13 to 14 15 and Up Product 2
12 to 15 16 to 19 20 and Up Product 3
1 2 3 and Up Product 4
18 to 21 22 to 25 26 and Up
Nesting Multiple Vlookup Conditions In An If Funciton
I am not sure if the VLookup or the If function will be the best way to perform this tast but I think it is they way I would want to go.
I have attached a sample workbook of what I am working with.
Please refer to it.
On sheet 1 I named the table array Ear_Tag.
This is information that is provided to me from the farmers.
Note that there are sometimes more then 1 pig with the same tag number. The only way to tell them apart is by the Test Date.
On Sheet 2
Is where I record the test results.
I dont want to have to look up each pig after each test and fill in the rest of the cells manually. I would like to have a look up of the ear tag and the test date to find the correct pig. Then each of the cells will fill in the correct information.
Formula Is Returning Msgbox Too Many Levels Of Nesting
I have the following formulas which when I try to put in excel, it says I have too many levels of nesting:
=IF(K4="","",IF(AND(Hta_1>=D4,Hba_1<=D4,Hta_1<>"",Hba_1<>""),1,IF(AND(Hta_2>D4,Hba_2<=D4,Hta_2<>"",H ba_2<>""),2,IF(AND(Hta_3>D4,Hba_3<=D4,Hta_3<>"",Hba_3<>""),3,IF(AND(Hta_4>D4,Hba_4<=D4,Hta_4<>"",Hba _4<>""),4,IF(AND(Hta_5>D4,Hba_5<=D4,Hta_5<>"",Hba_5<>""),5 ,IF(AND(Hta_6>D4,Hba_6<=D4,Hta_6<>"",Hba_6<>""),6,IF(AND(Hta_7>D4,Hba_7<=D4,Hta_7<>"",Hba_7<>""),7," No reinforcements"))))))..........
Nesting OR, AND Within IF: Comparison Amongst Several Cells And Returning A 1 If True
I'm trying to do a comparison amongst several cells and returning a 1 if true. if D25 is blank or does not equal Yes, Mixed or SP3, and if both F25 and G25 are blank, the output the value 1. First try:
=IF(AND(D21="",D21<>"Mixed",F21="",G21=""),1,"") - This seems to ignore the Mixed and outputs a 1 even if D21=Mixed.
=IF(AND(OR(D25<>"Yes",D25<>"Mixed",D25<>"SP3"),F25="",G25=""),1,"") - same as above, if D25=Mixed then value of the cell is 1.
Nesting Condition: Checks A Cell Containing An Email Address
I'm using excel 2000
I have a formula that checks a cell containing an email address, and if the format is not the office standard, displays a message. We now allow 2 variations, and I want to check for the second condition as well.
Basically, the email address is in the format
and the formula just checks the address against a lookup of names, the only seperator being period.
I now also need to be able to check for an underscore, and I don't know how to combine the conditions.
The existing forumula is
=IF((LEFT(A2,FIND(".",A2)-1))(LEFT(E3,FIND(" ",E3)-1)),"Check Email Recipient Main Database page column BQ:BR","")
and of course the underscore is easy, too
=IF((LEFT(A3,FIND("_",A3)-1))(LEFT(E3,FIND(" ",E3)-1)),"Check Email Recipient Main Database page column BQ:BR","")
but when I try to combine them, I get an error, or at best a VALUE output.
I think I need to nest them, but maybe there is a way to combine the conditions in or use "OR" and still get the "check email" message" ??
Nesting VLOOKUP In IF/vice Versa & Pivot Table
I've attached a sample/equivalent workbook of what I'm working on which will hopefully make it clear(er).
>There are two worksheets/month. Both worksheets (represent 2 different categories) are structured the same, two columns: model code & $ amount. >The model codes change (in # and actual model), between categories and month.
>The data for each month rolls up into a year-to-date summary worksheet, with 4 columns: Model (includes all models YTD, each only listed once), category1 YTD, category 2 YTD, & Total YTD).
Previously this had been done by manually entering any new models for the month into the rows in the YTD summary sheet. And the totals for each model (highlighted in yellow in the YTD tab in my sample) were just done by an adding formula, with the new month's data manually entered into each individual cell at the end of the formula (...+X). I know there's a much better way to do/automate this! (there are a lot more models than I've put in my sample aka it's way too time consuming manually).
My problem is twofold:
1. (main issue) I have been trying to do this using various IF statements nested in VLOOKUPS, and vice versa, but the issue that arises is for models in the summary sheet that don't exist in a given (month's) table. I want the value for those models (for that specific month) to be zero, but I cannot figure out how to get that to work in my formula. The only piece that works for me thus far is =VLOOKUP(A3, 'Jan Cat1'!A2:B18, 2, FALSE), but I've tried nesting it in IF statements, nesting IF statements in it, using ANDs & ORs, no avail.
I'm not even sure any of these options are the best ways to reach what I'm ultimately trying to do. A pivot table may be better? But I will need to keep/preserve the summary sheet for each month (so there cannot just be one big updated master pivot table).
2. If I could find a way to automate/refresh & update the row of models each month, it would be the sprinkles on the icing of this cupcake.
Paste Formulas As Values (strip Out Unwanted Formulas)
I have a macro running this code to strip out unwanted formulas and formatting.
'To stop screen flicker
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Range("qdata5,qdata6").Font.ColorIndex = 2
'To delete delivery address lines if 1st line empty
If IsEmpty(Range("deliver_line1")) _
'No End If required as only one action as a result of the If
Columns("A:E") = Columns("A:E").Value .........................
A spreadsheet based on my template has been sent to me because the macro won't run properly. When I try to run the macro I get a Runtime Error '1004' Method 'Range' of object '_Global' failed on the following line. Columns("A:E") = Columns("A:E").Value.
Nesting "if" Function: Fragment Marked In Red Is Currently Missing
In L45 I need function
Fragment marked in red is currently missing and if I want to use it, I would be nesting too many if functions again. To describe the situation: Row 41 is staff available for task, sometimes there is nobody doing the task therefore function will force value 0 in all variances if there is no staff available.
There are also occasions that despite having a number of staff allocated to do the task, nothing’s been received due to a various reasons, this is where I have designed a function calculating hourly variance against what was received against the planned target for this hour. When there is no staff – everything will be 0
When nothing’s been received – target for the hour will be negative. When there was something received – the difference between last receiving figure and current one, minus target for an hour will provide the hourly rate, but If nothing’s been received for the last couple hours, it will go to the last hour when something was received and calculate hourly rate basing on the difference between current figure, last available figure and target for an hour. And here we are at the heart of the problem – in the last cell I cannot use same function as I would have to nest too many “if” functions, therefore it does not include receiving figure in E44 at the moment.
Using Two IF Formulas (3 Or More To Count If Other IF Formulas Are Actually Returning A Value)
I have a spreadhseet with various functions on it and what I am trying to do is this.
Cell E4 returns a >35 or <35 true or false value
Cell G4 is either blank or has "Yes" text type into it.
What I am trying to do is get cell F4 to return certain arguments.
E4 = >35 and G4 is blank I want it to state "Email Hiring Manager"
E4 = ,35 and G4 is blank I want it to state "Wait"
I have a basic IF formula that returns this
=IF(E4>35,"Email Hiring Manager","Wait")
Then if cell G4 is populated with a Yes the formula needs to overwirte the origonal if with the return arguments of
=IF(G4="Yes","Email Agency","Email Hiring Manager")
If yes then what would be Email Hiring Manager (yes will only be input if E4 is greater than 35) will be overwritten with "Email Agency"
Can this be done with two If formulas or does there need to be 3 or more to count if other IF formulas are actually returning a value?
INDIRECT And IF In One
I am using the below formula to return values from a seperate worksheet.
=INDIRECT("'[Test File.xls]Test Data'!A"&A4)
These values are text, numerical and dates. Sometimes there are no dates in the source worksheet to return, and I end up with 00/01/1900.
Is it possible to leave the cell blank if there is no value to return???
I had a stab at trying to nut it out, but it was a Friday afternoon, head was mush, and the pub was calling.
Alternative For INDIRECT
I have used the function INDIRECT in 1 of my files.
The disadvantage is that both files (source and target) have to be open.
Is there a substitute for INDIRECT that works with a closed source file?
