Getting Indirect Formula To Update Cells References When Copied?
Mar 18, 2014
As you would normally use indirect formulas so the cell references don't change. Which that is what I want in the end, but I need to copy them to an indefinite number of cells first and would like to not do it by hand. I have found some solutions to similar questions/problems but cannot figure out how to make them work for me. So, what I am looking to do is this... (I have also attached the spreadsheet for reference)
I have gotten the information in columns A through F on the first sheet to update as rows are added, moved, deleted on the second sheet using Indirect range. Also, I could do this for Column I (Copmleted Proj. Avg. Terminations) but I would have to do it manually (as I began doing in I3, I4 & I5) but that would be time consuming. So I am hoping there is a way I can copy the formula down the cells are updated for the initial copy but then don't update if the referenced cells are moved or deleted.
I am using the formula below to sum across several worksheets, and the formula I am using works fine, but when I copy the formula across to other cells, I can't figure out how to have it update my cell range:
I have a userform that populates a list of names. As a name is added in column "D" column "C" updates a reference number using the formula =IF(D2="","",C1+1). I can get the formula to copy to the spread sheet but as a new name is added the formula stays the same. If I enter a name in cell D2 everything is fine but when I make the next entry in row 3 the same formula is entered as if it were text and not as a formula. so I wind up with a column of formulas that all say =IF(D2="","",C1+1) reguardless of what row the formula is in.
I have created some code that copies a master workbook into a new workbook that then creates new tabs for the sheets relevant to week numbers. In the master workbook there are 8 sheets, most of which reference each other in their formulas at some point. The problem arises in the newly created workbook as the sheettab names are renamed e.g "manager" in the master will become "manager wk1", "manager wk2" and so on. All the sheets are copying over great but they the lose their references to each of the sheets within their week groups because the formulas do not change to the correct week references. I am trying to solve the problem by using the Indirect funtion to change the formulas in the master to reference the correct week number, but i feel this is not the best way?
I have a workbook within which i have a worksheet that contains a lots of macro code (coded by me). As the workbook gets used by various people, i need to copy the worksheet and the macros across to the updated workbook, which doesnt contain the macro worksheet at all.
I have tried to copy it across by clicking on its tab and using the move or copy facility. This copies the sheet across as required. But for some reason, the macros all reference the old workbook. A small bit here for example for some reason opens up the old workbook and then performs the code in the old worksheet:
Sub SelectAll() For i = 12 To 20 Set curcell = Worksheets("Form Generator").Cells(i, 3) If curcell = False Then Cells(i, 3).Value = True End If Next i End Sub
As curcell is equal to worksheets...() i would have expected it to use the local worksheet, ie the one that the macro is attached to. So why is excel proactively hunting out the old workbook and sheet? is the method i used to copy across the sheet with the macros incorrect? If so, how should i go about it?
is an indirect range that resides in cell B15. It is constantly changing and the expectation is that the X_Y plot would adjust accordingly. It represents the data range of the chart. The chart does not carry with it any title.
So how do I approach this without using vba? As always any input is highly valued.
I am setting up a spreadsheet for user data entry. I have one sheet set up as a template to enable users to copy the required data header cells to subsequent sheets and (the problem) - to different locations on the subsequent sheets. The template is using validated lists with the criteria drawn from the cell/list directly above the current list. For example, the cell in R11C2 is validated/refering to the range: =Campaign
The cell directly below this is validated/ filtered by: =Indirect(R11C2). This works great in the template, or any subsequent sheet in which the cells are all located in the same row/column. However, when the template is pasted in a higher row, the Indirect refers to R11C2 rather than referencing the cell directly above.
I have a basic formula =C17+'Asset Depreciation 2008 Onwards'!C24, and I want to copy it down just using the drag function. Problem is that the second reference range of cells are in rows and hence when I copy it down it doesn’t automatically update the cell references because it want to update them by column number instead of row number. IE I want it to display =C17+'Asset Depreciation 2008 Onwards'! D24, instead of C25. Do you know if there is any way of telling Excel that I want it to increase the column number by 1 every time, instead of the row number for this part of the formula?
I want to sum A2 to B10. The catch is: I have the letter "A" in cell A1, the number "2" in cell B1, the letter "B" in cell C1, and the number "10" in cell D1. In effect, I want to make a function =SUM("A1B1":"C1D1") such that it gives me =SUM(A2:B10). Hopefully, the answer will work for any function (e.g. SUMIF, COUNT, VLOOKUP, etc).
I am running a research experiment in triplicate. Upon generation of data for all three, I create an averaged value of the three. I then take this value and do more calculations with it on a separate sheet. I wanted to know if there was a way in which I could quickly generate formulas based on a changing reference cell.
Example Data:
V1A 28 V2A 26 v3A 30 AvA 28
V1B 20 V2B 22 V3B 18 AvB 20
Vxy represents the value of y sample, x triplicate. V1A being sample A, first triplicate. AvX is the average of the three values.
I want to be able to generate a formula that references AvA which can be applied to the cell immediately below to reference AvB. A simple example would be to square the average.
Lets say I have two sheets titled "dashboard" and "raw data" in a workbook. Cell A1 in "dashboard" should always show the most up to date data from Row 1 in "Raw Data".
I update "raw data" daily, adding a new column to Row 1. For example December 19 would be A1, December 20 would be B1, December 21 would be C1 etc...How can cell A1 in "Dashboard" always reference the newest cell in Row 1 of "raw data"?
I have a spreadsheet with 2000 rows, and I need to add one column with the IF function that looks at the cell in the column to the left for each row, all the way down. How do I do that without typing in the specific different cell references for each row in my IF column?
I am try to get the following VBA macro to work; however, I keep getting hung up on errors regarding the formula I am trying to input. It is getting hung up on the apostrophes and dollar signs. I am fairly new to VBA so I am lost when it come to converting my sheet formulas to VBA.
Code:
With ActiveSheet.UsedRange.SpecialCells(xlCellTypeBlanks) .Formula = "=RAND()*0+VLOOKUP(INDIRECT(ADDRESS(1,COLUMN(),3),TRUE),INDIRECT("'"&TEXT(INDIRECT("$A"&ROW(),TRUE),"DD-MMM-YYYY")&" Inv'!"&"$J:$K",TRUE),2,FALSE)" .Value = .Value End With
I have a workbook with a main worksheet where all the data entry and calculations are made and then I have "sub" worksheets which mirror subsets (specific columns) of the information from the main worksheet. When information in the main worksheet changes, or rows/columns are added, I want the sub worksheets to update automatically.
The only way I can figure out to do this is to use absolute references in the sub worksheets. Does anyone know how to change the references to be absolute (using the F4 function) without having to do them one by one? Or can anyone suggest how I can achieve this in another way.
I'm working on a workbook where I'm linking data from a bunch of spreadsheets to a summary page. I have the first column (A) set up. I dragged the data across several more columns. Now I need to change reference to the tab in each column. Is there a quick way to do this without copying and pasting the tab name into each row (about 30 rows)?
(Each column represents a tab, the rows are the same type of data in every tab.)
I began to ponder a way to copy down cells so that the copying of the formulas results in references as shifting horizontally instead of vertically. One particular reason that this occurred to me had to do with my attempting to use Excel to make more orderly text copied from Adobe.
So, for example, if I copied text from Adobe, I would paste it in Excel. Thirty lines of text would past vertically into a column, from Row A1 to Row A30, with each line of text in its own row. I wanted to figure out a way so that in adjacent columns, I could put it so that I would have a set of formulas reading in =A1 in Column C cell/row 1, =A2 in Column D cell 1, =A3 in Column E cell/row 1, =A4 in Column F cell/row 1, =A5 in Column G cell/row 1, and so forth. I realized that if I copied this down, in the second row, the result would entail references to A2, A3, A4, A5, A6. I would prefer that the references update to A6, A7, A8, A9, and A10.
I have a macro that is set to clear a range of cells. If I make a change to the worksheet (such as adding a column) that moves those cells in the worksheet, the worksheet formulas update, but the macro cell references do not. How can I make my macro update in accordance with changes in the worksheet?
Using a combination of "Cell" and "Indirect" commands, I can get cell-references (the name, like "A1"), but I can't figure out how to actually DO anything with them. I keep trying to nest them inside of formulas, but I just can't get it to work. I've attached a sample workbook - there are two tabs.
I have cells (range named Formulas) in a worksheet A (wsA) linking to another workbook. This workbook has several sheets, each a different forecast. From a Radio Button Group on wsA I would like to choose forecast, FC1-FC3, and then all the cells in the range Formulas would be updated with the choosen FC.
I would like a VBA script to handle this:When the workbook is activated the present Forecast in the Radio Button Group should be stored as a variable (oldFC)When I choose a new forecast, the value should be stored in a new variable (newFC)I then want to loop through the whole range (Formulas) and update each cell and it's part of string value to the newFC
Before update: wsA cell N3='H:[5500-plan-06.xls]FC 3'!N$16 wsA cell N4='H:[5500-plan-06.xls]FC 3'!N$17
When new Forecast is choosen this should be update to: wsA cell N3='H:[5500-plan-06.xls]FC 1'!N$16 wsA cell N4='H:[5500-plan-06.xls]FC 1'!N$17
I am using this formula to calculate a column of numbers that are both negative and positive numbers. =SUMPRODUCT(--($A$5:$A$9647<=TODAY()),--($A$5:$A$9647>TODAY()-365),$C$5:$C$9647). I need to keep this formula the same where it will calcuate on a rolling 365 day but I need the total to be only the absolute value (abs).
