Adding Text Values Representing Time
Aug 23, 2005
The times listed in column A are formatted as text.
When trying to add them using a simple SUM formula (=SUM(A2:A5)), a false result of 0 is returned.
How can we add text values correctly?
Solution:
Use the SUM and TIMEVALUE functions as shown in the following Array formula:
{=SUM(TIMEVALUE(A2:A5))}
To apply Array formula:

Is it possible to create a drop down menu where additional information can be added then tallied up in a separate table?
I would like to create a menu representing "tasks" where an amount of "time" can be designated per menu for my employees to select and fill. I would like this information to then be tallied elsewhere so I can keep track of our efficiency.
I've attached the excel file to give a better idea of what I'm trying to accomplish.

I am a complete newbie at Excel, but trying to set up a simple worksheet that I can use to save a lot of time. I have a list of names and each has a paper delivered each day.
Can I set it up to treat the name of the paper ie. Tel as a value ie. 0.35? and then have it total etc?

I'll admit that the database I'm currently working on is not a vital on - it's my CD collection but I do use it as a testbed for spreadsheets at work so please bear with me!
I'm trying to add running times of CDs together, but of course can't simply use SUM as it will assume the values are base 10
I've got some extra columns in to separate the minutes and seconds, then for totals to divide the seconds by 60, add the result to the total minutes and finally add the remainder of seconds to this but........
is it possible format a cell so it won't allow erroneous time entries (ie, if I tried to put in 45:65 it would reject it?)

I have a problem with adding time values. The idea of my spreadsheet is to count time worked, and then calculate any variance from the normal shift length (i.e. 7h 30m). My formulas work fine until I work less than 7h 30m in a shift.
Example:
A1=start time
A2=end time
A3=IF(A2="","",MOD(A2-A1,1))
A4=IF(A3="","",(A3-(TIME(7,30,0))))
When the duration is over 7h 30m, A4 correctly returns the value of extra minutes. But when the duration is under 7h 30m the return is #####.
PS A1:A2 are formatted in a custom format hh:mm and A3:A4 are formatted as h:mm, and I'm using Win7 & MS Office 2010.

I am trying to combine the text values of several formulas in addition to adding some text (punctuation) in between.
Here is the data that I am trying to combine
C14: 2013
C15: Period 6
C16: Week 1
In Cell C13, I would like to have this value returned: "2013 - Period 6, Week 1"
Is there such a way to do this?

I am trying to create a spread sheet where I have different columns. The columns consist of name and dollar amount. Names may occur more than once. I would like to scan the column with the names and copy the different names to another column. Once that is done, I am hoping to copy the value or sum of all values associated with that name to the column beside it. I am going to have a long list of names with different values and I would like to sort them and add up those values. I have attached an example of what I am hoping to achieve. I am hoping my 'Sum of Values' is actually summed, I left it longhand for explanation sake.
Name

Name
Sum of values

I have names in A1, A2, A3 and A4 and in cells B1:C4 I have atendance for am and pm.What I need is it to count if someone was in on a day. So if B1 or C1 or both contains "in" then the subtotal will be 1 and added for each row, so it shows how many are in whether it be for 1/2 or a full day

I have an excel file with some data in it. I have two columns with one of four words in it. For simplicity I'll call them RED, GREEN, BLUE, and Yellow. A few columns over I have columns "Same" "Good" and "Bad". I'm trying to figure out a way to get excel to put a 1 in the appropriate column, if cell A1 is Red I need excel to look at the word in cell B2 and put a 1 in the "same" column if A1 and B1 are the same word. If the word in B2 is Yellow I need excel to put a 1 in the "Good" column. If the word in B1 is GREEN or BLUE I need it to put a 1 in the bad column. The tricky part is each of the four words RED, GREEN, BLUE, and Yellow have a different set of words that will be called "good" or "bad". So if the word in cell A1 if Green for example it will have a different set of good and bad color words.
So it seems I need four different functions depending on what word is in A1. In the column next to these lists of words I have the date which I'll need to use to give me the sums of same, good, and bad for each day. But first things first. I think I need to use a combination of IF functions and MATCH function, but I can't figure out anything that works. Below is what I'm hoping it will look like when I've got the right formulas.
First column
Second column
Date
Same
Good
Bad

I am trying to extract values from a text string and add them up in Excel 2007. So far i have been successful in extracting the value out of the text string like this - =MID(I6,AD6,3) where AD6 holds the position number in the text string to start from. So it's working OK for one row but i need to do the same thing on multiple rows where the text string can be in different columns and I'd like it to automatically pick up the non-blank cell.
each row only has one column with text in it and the value i need to extract is always after "$". this is a working spreadsheet so the text string could move from column to column over time and I'd like my formula to be able to detect which column to read from. I then need to add up all the values from each row.

I want to add hours to a date-time cell to get result in date-time.
Format of cell A1 is d/m/yy h:mm AM/PM
Format of cell A2 is General
Format of cell A3 is d/m/yy h:mm AM/PM
I want to add A2 (number of hours) to A1 to give A3.
The formula I used is A3=A1+Time(A2,0,0)
The formula works perfectly fine when A2 is less than 24, but when A2 is more than 24, the date doesn't get changed.

I need a formula to add just the time to ' date and time', ignoring weekends.
eg:
Fri 24-Aug-07 10:52 is the date and time
28:48:00 is the time
If I add the time to 'date and time', result is coming as Sat 25-Aug-07 15:40
But it should come as Mon 27-Aug-07 15:40 (hence ignoring weekend)

I am replicating a Matlab program which calculates tide levels at different times of day. I need to replicate it in excel to speed up data analysis and I am nearly there.
what happens is I need to apply a time offset to the time of high tide at port a based on the time of day, so if it is:
between 00:00 and 06:00 the high tide at port b is 81.6 minutes after the peak at port a
between 06:00 and 12:00 the high tide at port b is 74.56 minutes after the peak at port a
between 12:00 and 18:00 the high tide at port b is 81.75 minutes after the peak at port a
between 06:00 and 12:00 the high tide at port b is 79minutes after the peak at port a
I tried this formula, where CO2 has the time/date of the high tide at port a:
=IF(CO2<0.75,IF(CO2<0.5,IF(CO2<0.25,CL2+(81.6/(24*60)),CL2+(74.56/24*60)),CL2+(81.75/(24*60))),CL2+(79/(24*60)))
The problem is the high tide on 07/01/2005 07:45 is read as 38359.32 rather than 0.32 - is there any easy way to tell excel I'm only interested in the time not the date? I have this spreadsheet setup now to do all the other bits required and i is just the timing that is a problem.

i have a problem adding cells every 5th cell for example i have
=SUMPRODUCT((C10:C67)*(MOD(ROW(C10:C67),5)=0))
this adds every 5th row in this range and it does it right as long as there is no text in the cells in between
it works fine when it looks like this
1
1
1
1
1
1
1
but it does not work when it looks like this
1
1
text
1
1
1
when this happens it appears as #VALUE, meaning an error but i don't understand why if i'm just telling it to look at every 5th row and those specific rows have no text in them
i have a spreadsheet with text in between the cells that need to be added so i need a formula that only adds up the cells with numbers on it, to be specific the numbers are either ones or zeroes.....

I've never worked with Excel macros prior to today. I'm working on this for a friend.
I've got this sheet that's going to a web address, importing a table from the page, and making a line graph of the data. I got all that to work fine (after a lot of trial and error). Now I've got the data, and I want to make a scatter plot of it...
Here's the thing. I want each month of the data represented as a line on the plot.
This is hard to explain. It looks like this:
[url]
So from there, I want a loop to scroll through the dates and select a range that represents January, a range that represents February, etc, so I can save those ranges as variables and make a scatter plot with 12 curves on it.
Here is the code I have so far, in case you want to see it, not sure why you might need to though.

I'm having a problem with getting a result from another workbook. The purpose is to extract information from a closed workbook representing data from a country (ie US.xlsm, UK.xlsm) into the open one (summary). I want to count the number of results in a column which are above a certain amount (in this case 100).
So this is my coding for getting this result
=SUMPRODUCT(--(('C:address[US.xlsm]Worksheet name'!$E$2:$E$30000)>100))
Which works no problem for getting the number of results in the E column above 100. my issue is that I want to be able to change the name of the country in a cell, and then get the results automatically from the relevant workbook. I've been using CONCATENATE for these purposes and EVAL (from MOREFUNC)... and I get #REF!
So if I split up the above coding into two cells "=" and "SUMPRODUCT(--(('C:address[US.xlsm]Worksheet name'!$E$2:$E$30000)>100))" (just to keep it simple) and then use CONCATENATE to combine them in a cell. Using EVAL on that cell gives me #REF!
I've tested SUMPRODUCT with EVAL and CONCATENATE on formulae like the one above which do not link to other workbooks, and they seem fine. and SUMPRODUCT and linking to a workbook also works fine in the first example.
So the problem is somehow coming from the combination of SUMPRODUCT, EVAL and accessing an external sheet.

I am using Excel 2013. Anyway, the first issue is that I need to pull a date and a time period from text. So, for example, if I see something like Sunday Prime Time 7/6/14 8:37PM, I would want to pull ONLY the "7/6/14 8:37PM" out of it. Each text box could potentially be different, so it might not always be in the same format as "Sunday Prime Time 7/6/14 8:37PM" it might only show just the date and/or the time without all the extra text i.e. 7/6/14 8:37PM. Some of the cells will have text, others might only have just the time or even just the date and the time. The only thing that I am worrying about in each cell is extracting just the date and time. If this is too much to ask of excel, I would be ok with extracting ONLY the time - 8:37PM and not the date, but I would much rather be able to get both the time and date.
THEN, onto part two of my question. After I would pull the dates and times, I need to compare them with each other. So, when I have the same date with two separate times on that date, I need to write a formula to show if those times on that date are less than 30 minutes apart. So, if I have 6 times on 7/6/14, I need to know if any of them are less than 30 minutes apart.
I would need to have the formula say something like "Problem" if the times on 7/6/14 would be 5:30PM, 5:48PM, 7:00PM, 8:00PM, 8:15PM, and 9:00Pm for example. I would like to see the word "Problem" since 5:30PM and 5:48Pm is only 18 minutes apart, and "Problem" after 8:15PM since that is only 15 minutes past the 8:00PM which is obviously under 30 minutes. The times that are more than 30 minutes apart such as 7:00PM and 9:00PM for example are more than 30 minutes apart from any of the other times that were extracted.

I have the formula in my spreadsheet to compute time. It works only if the time in B1 is greater then the time in A1. I would to know if there is a formula to compute time with either negative or postive answer. For example if a carrier was set to load their papers at 12:02pm and ended up loading early at 11:50am I would like the result in C1 to be -12 or (12).
Currently I am using the formula: =HOUR(B1-A1)*6+MINUTE(B1-A1). Like I said, it is all good until someone loads early and then I get a "#NUM!"
Are there any other formula's that I can use or is there a simple modification to the formula I am using?

1) I am trying to find a way to add together the total number of hours worked from shift start time to the end of the shift start time throughout the week.
2) Add together the total number of hours travelled. again from the start and end times throughout the week...(presumably, if I solve the first problem, it in itself will provide the second solution.!! (Grin)
Where shift start and end times are concerned, the cells are formatted as time, but I want the sheet to produce the results of the total number of hours worked, so that I may cost the hours and make payment. Ie: 62 hours worked = £ at such and such a rate, and 25hrs travel paid at £ different rate.
