Counting Merged Cells As Multiple Values

Aug 15, 2014

I have a spreadsheet, similar to the one attached, that monitors deliveries. The reasons for deliveries not being made on time are merged across to have one reason per delivery vehicle.

I am trying to count the number of times a reason occurs, but utilizing a COUNTIF function it will only count a merged cell as one count, rather than per each delivery.

Copying Values Of Merged Cells

Apr 8, 2009

I have a pair of workbooks in which one calculates a number of values and I want to store the values only in the other.

I would expect to be able to highlight the range of the calculated cells in the source workbook, Copy and then Paste Special | Values in the other.

Both the source and the target contain some merged cells. When I try to do the paste, it complains that "this operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized".

They are identically sized.

I have even done Paste Special | Column Widths to guarantee they are identically sized. It doesn't complain about the merged cells then; in fact, it doesn't complain about the merged cells with any of the other paste operations, only with Values.

I have been able to repeat the behaviour with a very simple example. See the two attached sheets. Try pasting Values only of the range $B$2:$D$4 from either one to the other.

When I first created the samples they worked. What seemed to triggered it is I changed one of the merged column widths by one pixel, tried expecting it to fail (and it did), changed that column width back again and it hasn't worked since. As I said, I even tried pasting the Column Width to the target, which it appeared to do successfully, but it hasn't helped.

Now, the attached examples are only to show the principle of the problem. They are very simple and there would be a myriad alternative work-arounds for them. In my original case though there are many formulae over a much larger range and I want other people to be able to paste values without having to follow complicated instructions, so I am not looking for work-arounds unless someone has a mind-numbingly simple one that my numb mind has overlooked.

The only other way of solving the problem that I can think of would be to write a macro that copies cell values individually, but I'd rather not do that because I know these people: they will get narky about having to enable macros. It will be "against organisation policy" or something.

Is there any way of resetting the target workbook so that it will receive the values from the source?

Pasting Values With Merged Cells

Dec 10, 2013

I did the following, and get an error message, that itself seems erroneous.

Steps:
In the source sheet, i selected A9:G9, copied.
In the destination sheet, I selected A9:G9, and then "paste formatting"
In the source range, I selected the same cells, A9:G9, and copy
In the destination sheet, I selected A9:G9, and "paste values"

But, at "paste values" two error alerts come up (and the operation fails):

"The operation requires the merged cells to be the identical size"
"The information cannot be pasted because the copy area and the paste area are not the same size and shape"

Within the range, cells C9:D9 are merged. On the destination sheet, before i try to paste values, the cells that I am pasting into appear to be identically merged, if you just arrow by them, the cell highlighted is merged, and "Merge and Center" is highlighted in the ribbon.

So, I do not understand why i cannot paste in this case, since it would all appear to match up properly.

Upon further investigation, it appears that i cannot "paste values" with any cells along with the merged cell, in the same operation. If I only paste the merged cell alone, with "paste values" it works. But, if i add even one cell on either side, it fails in the same way, even though the selected paste region exactly matches the selected source region, in terms of what cell is merged.

Count Cell Values In A Column And Merged Cells

Apr 10, 2012

I have 10 columns and 18 rows. Every 2nd row might contain a number. I need to sum those numbers, however, sometimes group of cells in a row can be merged and i value of a cell is then 0.

example:

A1 to D1 merged; value 6
A3 to B3 merged; value 3
B5 to E5 merged; value 2

=sum(A1,A3, A5) would return 9 - correct
=sum(B1,B3, B5) would return 2 - should be 11?
=sum(C1, C3, C5) would return 0 - should be 8?
=sum(D1,D3, D5) would return 0 - should be 8?
=sum(E1, E3, E5) would return 0 - should be 2?

Lookup With Merged Cells And Multiple Arrays?

Aug 6, 2014

I'm looking to look up sheet name based on a date, then look the date up within that sheet which is a merged cell, then return the figure in the corresponding cell.

I have a sample worksheet to attach, just have to work out how to do it.!

In the sheet "Cashflow Summary" in cell E24, i want to lookup the sheet name based on the value in C22 (merged cell), then lookup the date in that sheet (6 August 2014), and return the value in cell y8.

The difficulty is with firstly the merged cells, but also performing the lookup over a number of different arrays, as the sheets for each month, have the months listed under each other in rows of 5 days at a time.

Excel 2003 :: Formula For Counting Values Across A Range Using Multiple Criteria Across Multiple Sheets

Feb 9, 2014

I have saved this on a 2010 workbook as I am at home but this will be used on a 2003 workbook.

I have several projects on one spreadsheet which multiple users will be working and I am trying to create a summary sheet of the work carried out.

Each user is expected to carry out a task on each row of the data held in each worksheet (research, call, update etc) and each task (Option 1-5) is assigned a value. Each user is expected to meet a certain level of points per day to calculate productivity.

I am looking for a sumproduct along the lines of the summary sheet attached but mine just takes one sheet into consideration and I need one for all sheets.

Excel 2010 :: Counting Cells With Multiple Criteria On Multiple Sheets In Workbook

Aug 5, 2012

I am using MS Office 2010. I want to count---on multiple sheets---the number of times that a given cell is greater than another cell if and only if a third cell is equal to a given value. I want to do this for 4 sets of data on each sheet. I thought I had it figured out with this formula---

=SUMPRODUCT(COUNTIF(INDIRECT("'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$R1"),2*(AND("'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$E1">"'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$F1"))))+SUMPRODUCT(COUNTIF(INDIRECT("'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$S1"),2*(AND("'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$G1">"'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$H1"))))+SUMPRODUCT(COUNTIF(INDIRECT("'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$T1"),2*(AND("'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$I1">"'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$J1"))))+SUMPRODUCT(COUNTIF(INDIRECT("'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$U1"),2*(AND("'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$K1">"'"&$H$1:$H$43&"'!$L1"))))

but it returns a value of zero each time. Clearly there is an error in the formula.

Here is some background:
-- $H$1:$H$43 is a block of cells that has the names of the sheets in the workbook
-- E1 and F1, G1 and H1, I1 and J1, K1 and L1 are the four groups of cells that I am comparing.
In the entire workbook, I want to add 1 (counting function) only when:
R1=2 AND E1>F1 or
S1=2 AND G1>H1 or
T1=2 AND I1>J1
U1=2 and K1>L1
on each appropriate sheet in the workbook.

Counting Each Occurrence Of Multiple Values

Dec 2, 2008

I'm working on an attendance sheet, and have allocated certain letters for related occurrences. For example, V=Vacation day, S=Sick day, B=Bereavement, etc. Over a two-week period (eg - D19:D32), I want to total the number of times one of these values has been used, and add to work hours. Where an employee will enter 7.5 in D19 to indicate hours worked, they may instead enter a 'V' for a vacation day, and have 7.5 hours still added to their total hours in the pay period. I have a formula that works, but it is so incredibly long that I'm thinking there must be an easier way.

Right now, I'm using the following:
=SUM(D19:D32)+(COUNTIF(D19:D32,"V")*7.5)+(COUNTIF(D19:D32,"Vh")*7.5)+(COUNTIF(D19:D32,"S")*7.5)+(COU NTIF(D19:D32,"Sh")*7.5)+(COUNTIF(D19:D32,"H")*7.5)+(COUNTIF(D19:D32,"B")*7.5)+(COUNTIF(D19:D32,"A")* 7.5)

Counting Multiple Values In One Cell

I have a spreadsheet with data from a survey. There are 375 respondents (rows) and 26 questions (columns). I use COUNTIF in order to figure out the frequency of responses and SUMPRODUCT to do some finer analysis. Here's my problem, some of the questions have multiple valid responses. In those cases the data was entered into the same cell. So I have a column that looks like this:

3,12
1,11

3,14,9

I can't figure out how to count the number of "1"s. It would be much easier if the responses could only be 1-9, but unfortunately they can be 1-20. So far, I've come up with:

Counting Unique Values With Multiple Conditions

May 7, 2014

I need counting unique values with a number of given conditions. I need this to be a formula so that I can just add data to my spread sheet and it will automatically calculate.

The formula I have is:
SUM(IF(FREQUENCY(IF(A:A=Z1,IF(B:B=Z2,IF(C:C>Z3,IF(D:D<=Z4,G:G)))),G:G),1))

The goal is to count all of the unique value in column G:G that meet certain criteria (have ending times greater than Z3 and beginning times less than Z4, etc.). Once I get the formula to work, I'll simply drag it down to have it calculate for similar lightly changing criteria (like different beginning and ending intervals). However, the formula doesn't seem to be working. It's only giving me zero values (I have "ctrl-shift-entered").

Counting Cells With Certain Values

I have a sheet with a bunch of data including dates. I'd like to report out the number of cells that are in a certain month (say January). If I create another column and use =MONTH(A12), I can use COUNTIF(A1:A100,1) to perform this task. This somewhat clunky solution isn't very practicle, becuase I have about 30 column's I'd like to analyze by the date in the column. Is there a more elegant solution where I can incorporate the MONTH(A12) into the COUNTIF equation?

Counting Values In Cells And A Range

Jun 8, 2009

I have a column, we'll say E18:E2500. In the cells in that column are four digit numbers. Some of these cells may have multiple four digit numbers separated by a comma and a space. (example: 2020, 2100, 3120) Some other cells in the column may also share the four digit numbers (I mean duplicates).

So I'm trying to write a formula to sum and count all the unique values in the cells and in the range. This is what i've been trying to use but it counts all the values with no regard to duplicate values:

=SUM(IF(LEN(TRIM($E$18:$E$2500))=0,0,LEN(TRIM($E$18:$E$2500))-LEN(SUBSTITUTE($E$18:$E$2500," ",""))+1))

Counting Multple Criteria In Multiple Cells

May 7, 2009

In the attachment at the bottom of the page I want to count the symbols in the blue selected area when they are apear into the cells in the red selected area. The catch is that I want to treat the each of the "RED", "BLUE", "GREEN" as a single colum so to speak and have a value "1" or "0" apear in the back circled area.

Eg, For MrB there is nothing in the "RED" column (B7:D7) so that gives a value of zero in cell cell "P7". In the "BLUE" column (E7:G7) there is a circle which will give a value of "1" in cell "Q7". In the "GREEN" column (H7:I7) there is a double circle and a square symbol and that will return a value of "1".

I hope this makes sense. I have tried to do this with counta, but that will also count cells when a space bar is used and that makes it difficult to make sure that I am getting the right info. I also tried VLOOKUP and COUTIF but this is beyond my level.
