Creating A Reference To A Workbook With A Fixed Location But With A Changeable File Name

Jun 12, 2008

I'm trying take a reference from some workbooks (e.g. WB1.xls,WB2.xls,WB3.xls,...etc)
They are all placed in one folder but there filename is subject to change,

I need to get the result of Cells A1 from WB1.xls+A1 from WB2.xls + A1 from WB3...etc
to shown on AA1 in another workbook(e.g. Collected.XLS)

Is this possible knowing that workbooks filenames are changeable?
Moreover Can the value of A1 from any new workbook added to the same folder be added automatically?...

Can the formula typed in AA1 from Collected.xls be draged down?(So as to show the sum of Cells B1 and C1.....etc) from each workbook?

Save As Macro With Location Prompt But Fixed File Name ?

Dec 29, 2008

For a sheet that many non-expert users will use on different systems I need a macro that let's them save, print and send the results of their work. So I made a macro that makes a copy of only 1 sheet of the workbook and saves it with a given name to a given location. The problem is that I want a location prompt to ask the user where they want the file saved, while giving/suggesting them a fixed filename. A lot of different users will make and use their sheets so I need a certain naming policy to manage all the files. (date, location, etc)

Reference A File Location In A Formula

Jan 19, 2010

if this is possible, but is there anyway to reference a file location in a formula using another cell?

EG:

Cell A2 (Text) = C:Folder1Folder2Folder3Sheet v1.2.xls
Cell B2 = =A2'tab1'!$A$1

So, in cell B2 it will use the file location in cell A2.

I need this because the values will be updated in Sheet v1.2 and version controlled (so if it changes to 1.3 all you have to do is change cell A2).

Reference Cell From Another Workbook With Part Of Location?

Feb 20, 2014

I have the following formula/array:

='fake folder location[2013-004.xlsx]MgmtRpt'!$A$4

Now this works perfectly fine, but I am wondering if it is possible to replace 2013-004 so that it reads the text from a cell on that sheet to complete the file name.

Example:

A
B

1
2013-004
='fake folder location[2013-004.xlsx]MgmtRpt'!$A$4

I want to replace the 2013-004 in B1 with text from A1. I have tried multiple methods but it just always assumes it is part of the file name or breaks the formula.

Referencing Sort Value In Fixed Location

Aug 4, 2014

I want to grab the value used to sort and put it in a different field.

example

Sort by City

cell location

A1-B1 "Inventory lists for "(CITY)

A3 - A15 San Jose
A16 - A30 Phoenix
A31 - A35 Portland
A36 - A37 New York

I want to take the chosen sort value and put that in the title but can't figure it out because the cell location changes when a different sort value is chosen.

File Backup To Different Folder Location Automatically Whenever Workbook Closed

Feb 10, 2014

1. A workbook is closed

2. In addition to the original workbook being saved, a copy of the workbook with the current date is also saved to the specified location of my choice.

For example

"C:UsersUSER1DesktopBackup Test as of 02-10-14"

3. If a copy of the workbook is already saved with today's date, then overwrite it automatically without prompting the user.

4. All the above happens without any user interaction.

Creating PDF File From Word Document Inside Folder With ID Number And Reference Number?

Jul 31, 2014

I have an excel database where I register cases. I have in it a button that creates a folder with and ID nr that is in column A (I create new ID nr in the next row, when I press the button it will create a folder with that ID nr and inserts a blank word document in it). We have a template that we copy to the folder (depending what type of case). The idea would be that once the template is filled in and ready to print, It would take the values from the ID nr and a reference number a few cells to the right. Is it possible to tell excel to open the word document in the folder and create a PDF version with the ID nr and reference number. (there are only 2 templates, so the macro would have to look for one of the two in the folder) The names of the templates are: "Standard" and "Other". I guess the best way to start maybe this would be that I select the cell with the ID nr and then press a macro button to have this done. One thing that needs to be done, is to put a copy in the same folder and another in a second folder called "Binder" in my documents folder.

Formula Reference To WorkBook With File Name In Cell

Apr 9, 2008

I need to reference a cell to another cell in a different workbook (not opened), however the name of this workbook contains a variable in its name. Something like:

='C:[Week" & variable &".xls]R23'!$D$3

where variable is the number of the week. I have tried using a cell name instead of a variable: ='C:[Week=($B$3).xls]R23'!$D$3

and I get a dialog box to update values by selecting a file.

Save File / Workbook As Cell Reference Filepath & Name

Feb 8, 2008

I'm trying to get Mac OS X Excel VBA to understand this code however the ChDir reference and the filepath seem to be causing problems. I would like to specify in the code where the file should be stored but I did try removing the filepath section altogether but to no avail.

Option Explicit
Sub SvMe()
'Saves filename as value of A1 plus the current date
Dim newFile As String, fName As String
' Don't use "/" in date, invalid syntax
fName = Range("A1").Value
'Change the date format to whatever you'd like, but make sure it's in quotes
newFile = fName & " " & Format$(Date, "mm-dd-yyyy")
' Change directory to suit your PC, including USER NAME
ChDir _
"C:Documents and Settings USER NAME Desktop"
ActiveWorkbook. SaveAs Filename:=newFile
End Sub

Replace Fixed Reference In 0000's Of VLOOKUPs

Nov 23, 2009

Is there a more efficient way that I can swap out an ending fixed reference value in thousands of vlookup formulas across many pages within the same workbook? For example, let's say one of my vlookup formulas is: =vlookup(A2,'Apples!'$A$2:$W$47,7,false)

and I want to change the range to 'Apples!'$A$2:$W$200, across several variations of the same formula, across several pages within the same workbook. Can this be done easily without tackling each sheet separately using copy, paste special, formula?

Creating Variables Based On Cell Location

Oct 10, 2009

if Row i Column j is activated then a corresponding variable Aij, Bij, Cij or Dij would be created (if not already existing), or cumulated by 1. The problem as I see it - completely generalised - is to create a variable where the variable name itself is formulaic, as well as its value. I know SAS would have no problem with this due to the order in which it parses data steps, but I'm pretty amateur with other programming languages so I don't know if this is blindingly obvious or downright impossible!

Macro To Download Csv File From A Dynamic Date Based Url To A File Location

Feb 23, 2014

I have a requirement to download a lot of historical data files from the archieve of an website. The url goes something like this: [URL]....

This downloads file for 21022014 ie. 21-Feb-2014. I need to be able to have a facility to have a selection criteria on my user form (in excel) where I specify a date range and the macro automatically downloads all the valid excel files available within that date range (files for Saturday, Sunday and some holiday dates will not be available in the website archive database) one after the other (like at single clcik of button) into a specific location (predefined viz.. c:/Users/EOD files/) on my laptop. Best would be if I am able to select the save location run time by using a 'Browse' like feature where I go and choose my local laptop folder...same type when we try uploading a file from our laptop to the web..

Macro To Open File Saved In Same Location But File Name Changes With Each Date

Feb 8, 2013

I do routine tasks every day which involves opening 3 different files and pasting data into my main file. The data is always in the same format, and the 3 files are saved in the same location (3 different folders through). The 3 files are saved each day and the naming convention is constant, with only the date changing. For example, the files are always saved in C:My Documents and the files are called test_05.02.2013.xls. Tomorrow the file will be called test_06.02.2013.xls and so on.

So each day I will be rolling a file forward and I want to bring in the info from each of these files based on the new day.

How to do 1, and I will do the others (because the concept will be the same).

Print To Fixed Width File

I have this data below in an excel worksheet. I'm using the ws.Cells(x,x).Value command to read values from the cells an print them out to a .prn fixed width file. However when it writes it to the .prn file my numeric fields don't have are not 0.00 but 0. And also the numeric fields are left justified I would like them right justified in the .prn file.

Excel Spreadsheet values

1.135.102/29/120.000.001.135.202/29/120.000.00

My output to .prn file looks like below:

1.135.1 02/29/12 0 0
1.135.1 02/29/12 0 0

I would like my output to .prn file to look like the following:

1.135.1 02/29/12 0.00 0.00
1.135.1 02/29/12 0.00 0.00

Import Fixed Width Text File

Apr 28, 2008

I am having a problem importing fixed width text files with VBA. I created a user form for a dept to import a number of reports we get as text files into Excel. I imported each line into 1 cell (Column A) in Excel and then used mid functions to split out the columns. Everything works fine on my PC. However, when I use other PCs to import the same files (either off the same shared drive or the PC hard drive) the columns are not splitting in the correct places. Does anybody know what could cause this. Since the columns are splitting based off a fixed number of characters, I'm assuming Excel is somehow distorting a character count while opening the text file. I did notice that if I try to import text files saved on one of our shared drives, they do not import correctly on my PC either. However, if I copy and save the same text file to any of the other shared drives or my PC, it imports with no problems.

Circular Reference - Value Of That Variable Changes Depending On The Location Of The Cell

Mar 16, 2009

Excel 2003 > Attached is a small model of what I am trying to accomplish. Cells B2 and B4 contain the same formula … a formula that calls a simple function. The function has a variable passed to it … and the value of that variable changes depending on the location of the cell. Now, see the function in Module1 … it is called CellCalc. If the variable passed = Jim then value = 3. If the variable passed = Jack then value = 8. That is straightforward.

Note also that when Sheet1 is activated, I calculate the cells from left to right and top to bottom … that is important. Here is the challenge. If B2 > 1 then I want to add B2 to B4 and set B2 to 1. I can set B4 properly but I cannot reset B2. You can see my 2 attempts that are commented out. Is there some way of accomplishing this … or am I simply stuck in a circular reference?

The alternative to this is to write a function that operates externally on these cells. That will work for sure but then the values of the calculations will overwrite the functions in those cells, thereby taking away the dynamic nature of this application.

Changeable Master Form To Update Children?

Nov 11, 2008

I'm currently working on a form to fill out in a study on different analyzers; the master form has gone through several revisions. To keep things looking neat, all the "children" forms have had to be altered, too. The amount of data is getting large and having to do this is getting annoying.

Is there a way to create a master form that is modifyable where the changes are spread through the children? i.e. if I insert a row with new information, I'd like the change to occur on multiple sheets. If I move a row to a different spot, similarly, I'd want all my forms with data to move around to follow suit.

How To Alter Fixed XLSX File To Check For Non Blank Cells

How could you alter your fixed XLSX file to check for non-blank cells instead of "X" specifically?

Transferring Data From One Workbook To Another - Bypassing Fixed Formulas

Jan 5, 2012

I am in the process of transferring data from one workbook to another.

I am doing this simply by clicking on the cell where I want the data to be, typing "=", then clicking on the cell in the other workbook I want it to match. While there might be easier ways to do this, it isn't too terrible and my columns are not in the same order in the two workbooks.

The problem I'm running into, is when I click on the cell I want to copy over, the formula defaults to the fixed formula (puts $ around the cell name) and I want to be able to copy down the formula over multiple cells.

I can click on the cells and press F2 once then F4 three times to get the formula over to the desired non-fixed format, however, I have to do this for 12 different workbooks and on roughly 40 columns for each.

Is there a way to expedite the process or turn off this fixed-formula default?

File Location For Screen Prints
