Extract Number Of Variable Length From Text String

Jan 25, 2007

Imagine that I have this list of thousands of customers, who are listed in column B in the format "customer no+space+customer name".

Now I want to extract ONLY the customer no from the text string in column B and insert it as number value in column A on the same row.

Would have been easy with "Left" command, but as the customer numbers have variable length, I have a problem.

Extract Strings From Range Of Variable Length Text

Jan 18, 2008

I have the following issue. I have a list of strings. Each string contains certain characters that are exactly the same for all strings, some characters are different making the string longer (in some cases). What I need to do is extract some combination of characters from each string. The strings look like this:

AB & CDE & FG & I mmmm yyyy.HIJK
AB & CDE & FG & II mmmm yyyy.HIJK

The part "AB & CDE & FG & " (incl. spaces) is the same for each string. The next part contains a roman count from I to VII, causing the length of each string to vary. The "mmmm" part contains the current month spelled in full e.g. December. This part differs as well, for each string. The "yyyy" part contains the year in four digits, e.g. 2007. The part after the dot is the same for each string again.

What I need to do:
- is to extract the month and assign it to a new string
- extract the year and assign it to a new string
- extract the roman number, translate it to a normal number (II -> 2) and assign to a string (or integer).

Extracting Text From A String With Variable Length

Jan 13, 2009

Hey I got a long String like this "[...] increase of x.xx% [...]".

I am trying to extract only the percentage number which can be of variable length, so maybe 900.99% or 9.99%.

I tried this formula:
=MID(G14,SEARCH("%",G14)-5,5)
but this one doesnt bring the right results as the percentage figure is often not exactly 5 characters long.

WO_17368_50885431-A-ADDMISSINGPOLE
WO_11021_52350485brock3377
In a spreadsheet, I had set up three columns where:

A: removed first three characters. WO_32092_56228491_115130-WP55 to 32092_56228491_115130-WP55
B: removed up to the _ . 32092_56228491_115130-WP55 to 56228491_115130-WP55
C: captured the first 8 characters left. 56228491_115130-WP55 to 56228491

I am pulling the data into Excel via an ODBC where there is thousands of rows of data. The three column process puts a tremendous strain on the processor.

Is there a formula that will extract the 8 character number without a three step process?

String Parsing With Variable Length Strings

Mar 28, 2006

I am trying to split up a cell into numbers and charachters and place them in
separate columns, but the lenght of the number part varies as does the
content of the character part.

For example, one cell could be 5#, 10Tins, 4 lb, 100Pcs, etc.
I would like to be able to pull out the #, Tins, lb, and Pcs in to their
own column.

I have found this formula:
=LEFT(A1,FIND("-",A1,1)-1)

but it assumes some level of consistency, the "-" in the cell.

Extracting Number Of Seconds From Variable Text String?

Oct 2, 2011

I have a column of cells, each with a with text string that has three possible formats where I want to extract the total number of seconds.

The three formats are:

nnn hrs nn min nn sec (example: 1 hrs 42 min 58 sec)
or
nn min nn sec (example: 55 min 1 sec)
or
nn sec (example: 10 sec)

The result I want is a numeric value of the total number of seconds in the text string.

For example a text string of: 1 hrs 42 min 58 sec

Should give the result: (1 x 3600) + (42 x 60) + 58 = 6,178

The only constant is the 10 digit number followed by the 6 digit number in the middle and I want to use it to parse the text string. Text Parsing With Variable Length?

Jun 10, 2014

Column M:
##/##/#### | Variable Length Text-####

Example:
01/06/2014 | Daniel Trimble-4048

I need to parse out the different parts of Column M.

In Column R -- "Close Date", I'm successfully using:
=LEFT(M2,FIND(" | ",M2)-1)

...to extract the close date of the donation.

In Column S, I want to list the donor name--which is all of the text after " | ", and before the "-".

I don't need anything after the hyphen, and fortunately in this data, no one's name has a hyphen in it.

The Close Date is working fine for the LEFT and FIND functions, but for the life of me, I can't seem to get MID to work for the variable-length text. The text will always start in the same position -- 14, as the date and delimiter are standardized. And the last 5 characters of the text are not variable in length, so they can be cut out completely.

How do I use MID to extract everything starting at position 14, and stopping 5 characters short of the end of the text?

UDF To Extract Digits From Variable Range String

Apr 28, 2014

I have a long string that has a list of digits in the middle that I want to extract. The string is variable length and the number of digits I want to extract is 5-7. I also have slashes in between the numbers I want to extract. I need a UDF that allows me to extract the 5-7 digit number from the string and restrict around the slashes (i.e. if two sets of digits in the string match the condition for extraction, extract the one around the slashes.) For example my original data is like

1. aaa/12345/aaa/123
2. aaaaa/123456/aaaaaa/3423
3. 323/aa/1234567/aa

and I want for results

1. 12345
2. 123456
3. 1234567

Is there a UDF that allows me to do this?

Give Cell A Value Based On Length Of Row (variable Row Length)

Jan 9, 2010

My worksheet contains data with the reaction times on a psychological test. Each respondent in the test has 280 rows in my excel sheet.

The 'perfect' length of the row, is from A to M. When an error is made in the test, the length of the row will increase. So the error length can be A to AA.

For me it is important to analyse the error. So I would like to give a perfect row length, the value 1, and an error row length a value 2.

So, in conclusion:

If:
Cell length = A1 - M1? --> Copy A1 B1 C1 (A B Cof that row) to Sheet3, and give D1 in sheet 3 the value 1

Cell length >= A1 - M1? --> Copy A1 B1 C1 (A B C of that row) to Sheet3, and give D1 in sheet 3 the value 2

Extract 2nd Number From A String

The following worked perfectly:=MID(U3,FIND("f", U3)+1,LEN(U3)-FIND("f", U3)-23)

Until this line came up:"1 of 1 job ... View all jobs"

Obviously the "jobs" changed to "job" because of there being only 1, so the "-23" no longer worked. I need this to get the second number out of the string and it can change because the data is being refreshed from a website so it could easily change from one line to another.

Extract The Last Number From A String?

Jun 20, 2014

It's for listing items to eBay. Ink Toners to be precise, the macro I have creates everything I need for a listing with a few msg prompts and importing data from another sheet. Saves me hours of work. Each cartridge has a Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow. The macro works fine for cartridge sets that go under one name. E.g: Brother TN325 Black, TN325 Cyan, TN325 Yellow... etc.

I've run into an issue with some cartridges which have different names: HP C530a Black, C531a Cyan, C532a Yellow...

I set the macro up to deal with different number, by removing the last character of the "tonername" string "C530", then replacing it with "C531".. etc.

What I haven't factored in is the ones with an A on the end. I need a way to tell it to ignore the a if there is one.

To make it clear, I will be inputting the text: C530a From this, I need to create 3 more strings: C531a, c532a and C533a

Here's the snippet of code I'm using to achieve what I'm already doing.

Code:
Selection.Replace What:=A, Replacement:=Left(y, Len(y) - 1) & "1"
Selection.Replace What:=b, Replacement:=Left(y, Len(y) - 1) & "2"
Selection.Replace What:=c, Replacement:=Left(y, Len(y) - 1) & "3"

Extract Multiple Text Strings From A Long Text String

Sep 4, 2009

An original text string entry appearing in an Excel cell would be:

"N7C Neuroprotective J5Z Antiviral, other M2Z Antiarthritic, other J5A Antiviral, anti-HIV"

I need to extract N7C, J5Z, M2Z and J5A from this string and list these alphanumeric values in separate cells adjacent to the original text string. The challenge is that these alphanumeric references may appear in different positions within the original string with no fixed value e.g. a "," separating them. The alphanumeric references may also be 3 or 4 characters in length and there may be different numbers of alphanumeric references in the original string.

Another example would be (very different from the first):

"T2Z Recombinant, other K5B Radio-chemoprotective J3Z Antibacterial, other D3A Vulnerary A10C Symptomatic antidiabetic K6Z Anticancer, other R8A Antiasthma B6A Septic shock treatment I1Z Immunostimulant, other S1Z Ophthalmological R8B Antiallergic, non-asthma M1A1 Anti-inflammatory"

You can see that in this further example "A10C" & "M1A1" are 4 character alphanumeric strings wheras the others feature 3 characters.

Extract Number From Alphanumeric String ..

Dec 16, 2008

I would like to parse a part number.

ab24s-12-g4a

if there is a "-#-" in the string, that is the value I want. If the "-#-" is not present, I would like to take the first number. Currently, as written in your first example, I am getting the first number - excellent and thank you!

In the sku, the first digit reprepresents capacity. If a second number is present after the capacity portion of the sku (i.e. "-#-"), that means that they want to order it filled with less than capacity. For instance, a carton of eggs and they want 6 eggs instead of the max capacity of 12. (i.e. egg12-6-z2z). Numbers after the second octet (i.e. z2z) do not matter.

It would be a number only in the second octet. If there are characters with it, the equation should disregard it.

Here are the scenarios, and what the formula should accomplish

1) egg12 --> currently returns 12
2) egg12-6 --> would return 6
3) egg12-6-g2c --> would return 6
4) egg12-g2c --> would return 12

Extract 5 Digit Number From String

Jan 12, 2009

I need to extract a set of 5 numbers from a string of characters. The number set I need is always 5 digits long, always starts with a 1, and always begins after a period. But the number I need can occur in different parts of the string:

In each example below I would want to extract only the 10572 portion.

5194003.10572.N
5194003.10572.R
5194003.1.0010785.10572
7500008.N.5999900.10572

Additionally (if possible) if the cell is blank I don't want anything to show up, and if the string begins with a letter then I don't want anything to show up either.
