I have a column of contract numbers of varying length. I want to run a sumif of all of the values on my reference sheet that have the contract number beginning with the contract number in my listing. All of the the contract values in my reference sheet are very long. Since the numbers I am working with vary in length, i don't know how to match this string in the sumif function
I need to find text within middle of a string. Character before required text is say AAA Character after required text is say BBB Text required can vary in length. Extract text and place in another column.
All text in a single column, required text not in every line. but does repeat.
There are 11,000 rows and 4,000 are unique. The goal is to merge the data down to the 4,000 records. Each of the unique entries shows up 1 to 15 times.
In trying to solve this, I wonder if I should break this down into the different # of occurances and implement specific solutions. e.g., There are
5700 entries that show up 2x 504 that show up 3x 24 that show up 12x

There are a thousand numbers like this, I was wondering how I can move the cells with 7 numbers to the right column, and keep the cells with 8 numbers where they are (or move them to the 3rd column to the right)
I have a column of data that contains suburb, state and postcode (zip code). I can extract the postcode quite easily using:
=RIGHT(H2,4) However, sometimes there is one word for the suburb, and other times there are two or more words. Also, the state abbreviation contains either two or three letters: MARYBOROUGH QLD 4650 BRAY PARK QLD 4500 TEA TREE GULLY SA 5091 Does anyone know of any code I could use to extract the three pieces of information into three new columns? (I.e. Suburb, State, Postcode)
I imagine the formula would contain some method of counting the number of paces; however, the number of spaces between each word may be more than one space.
I am trying to extract dates from text strings of varying lengths. The date may appear anywhere in the string. The dates are all 8 characters, in the mm/dd/yy format.
For example:
12/12/2007 is the date in this string. There is a date of 12/12/2007 in this string. The date in this string is 12/12/2007.
I run this report from ADP and it only comes out in PDF or txt. I copied and pasted it to Excel, but it comes out funny. Below is a sample of the data from one field and I am trying to extract the 6 digits (it's the employee ID) from everyones name with a macro to the adacent column (.i.e data is in col B3, I would like the output to be in cell B4)
The problem is the 6 digit numbers isn't in the same location and I didn't know how to extract it.
I have the following issue. I have a list of strings. Each string contains certain characters that are exactly the same for all strings, some characters are different making the string longer (in some cases). What I need to do is extract some combination of characters from each string. The strings look like this:
AB & CDE & FG & I mmmm yyyy.HIJK AB & CDE & FG & II mmmm yyyy.HIJK
The part "AB & CDE & FG & " (incl. spaces) is the same for each string. The next part contains a roman count from I to VII, causing the length of each string to vary. The "mmmm" part contains the current month spelled in full e.g. December. This part differs as well, for each string. The "yyyy" part contains the year in four digits, e.g. 2007. The part after the dot is the same for each string again.
What I need to do: - is to extract the month and assign it to a new string - extract the year and assign it to a new string - extract the roman number, translate it to a normal number (II -> 2) and assign to a string (or integer).
I've found several posts but none seem to peform this varying function:

The problem with the formulas I've got specifically define - pulling let's say LEFT, 2 characters.....when, I may need it to pull 2 or 3 or 4. I found something that's smart enough to look for ONLY ALPHA and strip those out and place them into one column. =LEFT(A1,MIN( FIND({0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9},A1&"0123456789"))-1)
* I need something that's smart enough to look for ONLY NUMERIC. no matter how long the string is...and place those in Column C (like I mention in the example at the top).
Using Excel 2003, Column E has a varying and unpredictable number of rows, which only the final 252 rows are of significance. I need to compute the following formulas, here written in English as I can't determine the proper terminology to accomplish this task in Excel:
Final Row with a number in Column E/average (final 252 rows with numbers in column E)+
Final Row with a number in Column E/average (final 126 rows with numbers in column E)+
Final Row with a number in Column E/average (final 63 rows with numbers in column E)
Once again, what makes this not straightforward for me is the column may have wildly varying numbers of rows.

I have a column of data where the seperate entities are divided by blank rows. for example: i need to calculate sum(G3:G15) then skip the blank row (G16) and calculate the next group, say sum(G17:G50) and export that import to a new worksheet.
The issue is that the column lengths vary from day to day so the blank rows will not be in the same position.
I have a workbook with several sheets of varying length (amount of columns). The length of each sheet changes every week. I am working on making a time sheet log that will have employee name, 7 rows for days of the week and a row for total hours worked. each cell will either be blank in that row because employee has not worked that day or it will have numerical hours and the place the employee worked. We have many different job sites so text is subject to change. For example Monday employee 1 worked 8 hours at MRCR, so cell would state 8 MRCR Tuesday did not work so left blank. Wednesday worked 8 hours at CCR so will be 8 CCR. Thursday worked 8 hours at CU. so 8 CU in cell. Friday Saturday and Sunday left blank. How do i add create a formula that would be standard formula for each week for employee that would add numbers and omit text as well as ignore blank cells from week to week as the employee schedule changes.
I need excluding text from a cell and come out with a random number up to 3 numbers. Please see the attached image;
If you notice in column D there is text and a number that starts with a decimal, for example on the first row is .437 the next row is .215 next row is .63 etc... Is there a way to come out with a random number mixing it up to 3 digits and output those number on column "E"? Im only interested in filtering and coming out with the random number i mentioned .437 .215 .63 etc... not the +/-.010in.
There is no right or wrong number, i just need to come out with random number using up to 3 numbers up.
Maybe for .437 three numbers up could be .440 for the next row .215 maybe a number up .216..etc..
Hope there is a way to do this, my excel file is too long to type a number manually.
The 'Text to Column' function does not work because there is no fixed width and no deliminater. To add in a deliminater, like a "", is an option but there are thousands of cells to do this to.
As you can see, using LEFT, RIGHT and MID functions become tricky since the deliminater would be a "space" but there are often several "spaces" in the string of characters.
Is there a way to SEARCH or FIND the first number and let that be the deliminater?
I have text in column F that have numbers at the begining of the text. Unfortunately not all the number are of the same lenght. what is the way I can separate them from the text.
