Formula To Extract Variable Substring From String With Multiple Spaces?
Jul 19, 2012
I've found several posts about returning variable substrings that dealt with one or two spaces, but I have not been able to find anything that is for multiple spaces. The number of characters before the substring will remain constant.
For example:
Income from transmission agreement - 83 subs @ $0.44
In this case I need to extract: 83
Income from transmission agreement - 10,312 subs @ $0.50
Need: 10,312

(I need to do this using VBA so that it can work as an excel macro and/or a vba function in access.)
How can I extract the first occurance of any substring over a certain character length from within a string ?
eg. My string may take any of the forms given below (or something similar), how can I extract the first set of characters that is at least (say) 4 characters long ? i.e. always get the 'Phillips' out of the below...
Phillips Homes Ltd
Mr T A Phillips
TA Phillips Homes Ltd
T A Phillips Homes Ltd
T. A. Phillips Homes Ltd
The names used are only an example (Phillips could be any name whatsoever).I am familiar with Search, Len, Left, Right, Mid, Instr etc. but just can't figure this one out.

I am trying to make a simple formula to populate a cell with the first matching substring found in a data cell (from a fixed list of substring keys).
Example of desired results:
Substring data: {X, YY, ZZ} (typically 6 to 15 values in real world use)
Data..........Calculated result..........Comment
AAX.................X........................Substring X was found in Data.
ABC.............[empty]...................None of substrings were (X, YY, ZZ were found)
XYYZZ.............X......................(only first match need be returned)
ABCZZ.............ZZ....................Substring ZZ found etc….
I am looking for something cleaner than nested if statements since there are likely to be a lot of values and different variations. The work would then be to copy the formula and populate the list of substrings to search for in the data. I tried some array formulas using search() but no luck so far.

I am trying to extract the last substring in some text that I have. see below for example.
12/30-12/31 Bob Dylan 40.25
I need to extract the 40.25 out. Every line item may be different but the number I am extracting is always after the last space. I tried using mid and find but this doesn't work well when there is more than 1 space in the text.

I have a long string that has a list of digits in the middle that I want to extract. The string is variable length and the number of digits I want to extract is 5-7. I also have slashes in between the numbers I want to extract. I need a UDF that allows me to extract the 5-7 digit number from the string and restrict around the slashes (i.e. if two sets of digits in the string match the condition for extraction, extract the one around the slashes.) For example my original data is like
1. aaa/12345/aaa/123
2. aaaaa/123456/aaaaaa/3423
3. 323/aa/1234567/aa
and I want for results
1. 12345
2. 123456
3. 1234567
Is there a UDF that allows me to do this?

Imagine that I have this list of thousands of customers, who are listed in column B in the format "customer no+space+customer name".
Now I want to extract ONLY the customer no from the text string in column B and insert it as number value in column A on the same row.
Would have been easy with "Left" command, but as the customer numbers have variable length, I have a problem.

Let us say I have the following text in Cell A1. "There is a fault in the cal cycle.Need to update the records." And in cell A2 I have the following text. "Called for backup assistance. There is an issue with numbers." I cells B1 & B2 I need a particular formula which searches for the substring "cal" exactly and returns true if present. In cell A1, we have "cal" in the text. So it should return true for me in cell B1.
However in cell B2 I need false to be returned even though I have "Called" inside the text. I need true to be shown only for those cells where we have the exact text "cal" and no text characters in front or back of it.

I'm looking for a formula that can determine whether a given sub-string appears in a string. For example if cell A1 contains the string "bathing", and cell A2 contains the sub-string "bat", the formula in A3 would return "TRUE".
However, if the sub-string in A2 is changed to "cat", the result in A3 would be "FALSE". The formula would need to work with strings of different and unpredictable lengths.

Cell A1 contains 012345678 ** Customer of 987654321 **
Cell B2 contains 087654321
My formula =MID(A1,FIND("of",A1)+2,10) works perfect if it has a "customer of...". How to revise my formula that when it gets to cell B2 and if there is no "** Customer of ..." it would leave it blank or zero rather than #Value!?

I need to extract all instances of words that have format xnnnnnn, where x is an alpha character (letter of alphabet, to be precise) and nnnnnn are numbers. The words could something like u435586. The problem is I do not know how many instances of these words are in the string. The entire string is contained in a cell. A sample string could be something like:
SMNTv922970;#1283;#SMNT 433925;#1284;#SQRS 003417;#1285;#SQRSp047683;#1286;#SMNT 6132451;#1287;#SQRSw3145627;#1288
and the end result should be
v922970 t433925 t003417 p047683 t6132451 w3145627
The words are preceded by the character "" which might facilitate the search.

I'm trying to extract all the numbers from the left of the delimiter ":" . They can occur once or more.
E.g. cell F2 contains BP2.2.1:40 BP2.2.1:50 BP2.2.1:60 BP2.2.1:70 BP2.4.1:80
and what i want as a result is : BP2.2.1 BP2.2.1 BP2.2.1 BP2.2.1 BP2.4.1.
I've tried =IFERROR(LEFT(F2,FIND(":",F2)-2), " ") but only displays 1 out of a possible 4 in the cell.

col1
XXXX1244 50
XXXX1519 60
XXXX1244 50
xxxxx1111 10
xxxxx1519 65
the last 4 caracters are numbers. I need to test these numbers and sum the corresponding values them in a single cell without adding new column(SUMIF like).
so in the above example I need to sum all ending at 1244 or 1519, therefore the sum showed in the single cell equals 225
to extract from a single cell: =VALUE(RIGHT(D8;4))
I tried to use an array formula but it seems to crash if a blank cell is in the array

if it is possible, to use a string variable in a Formula via VBA.
For example: ActiveCell.Formula = "=SUM(Sheet3!strVariable)"
Of course the code is not working that way. The Variable has the following structer: CellAdress;CellAdress;CellAdress... so it would perfectly fit into the formula-syntax.
Is there any possible way to do that? The reason behind it is, that I have to deal with a flexible range and I want to process this range with a formula. Actually the range is flexible, because of different filters and I only wanna count all numbers in the unhidden rows.
My varibale would then contain all celladresses, for the visible cells.
So in a nutshell: is it possible to somehow use a varible in a formula?

Just a quick question, is it possible to use a string variable in a Excel formula (in VBA)? Im trying to do the following in VBA
mortgageSchedName = acName & " Schedule"
Range("B6").FormulaR1C1 = "=mortgageSchedName!RC[254])"
the above results in an error because there is no such sheet as "mortgageSchedName", but I want it to access the value of that string variable.

I'm getting the generic 1004 error on the Range.FormulaR1C1 line, but I can't seem to see the problem.
Code:
Sub UpdateFormulas()
Dim stockFund As String
For i = 2 To finalRow
[Code]....
The mouse-over on the stockFund variable in that last line shows the correct cell address as the value and I checked the If statement to ensure it actually finds the number. I would guess that it would be a syntax error with that line, but it looks correct to me.

With VBA in Excel 2010 I am connecting to a SQL server by using ODBC.
This is a two part process:
Part one:I have created a connection string that gets me the following data: A, B, C, D, E from sheet tpoPurchOrder Where B is equal to "1" And Where C is equal to a changing field under Sheets("Macros").Range("B2")
Here is part one
Code:
Sub Part1()
Sheets("Open PO by Vendor").Select
Sheets("Open PO by Vendor").Cells.Clear
With ActiveSheet.ListObjects.Add(SourceType:=0, Source:= _
"ODBC;DSN=Connection;Description=Description;UID=USER;PWD=PASSWORD;APP=Microsoft Office 2010;WSID=Workstation;DATABASE=Database" _
, Destination:=Range("$A$1")).QueryTable
[code]...
Part one works perfectly.
Part two is where I have problems.Part two is a little different because I have the same connection, but what changes is the table that I am looking at "tpoPOLine" instead of "tpoPurchOrder" and the where is now going to have a variable number of commands.
I want part two to be depend on part one. Under part one I want the result from column E to be a where statement in part two.
As follows:
In particular: *E3 from Part 1*, etc.
Code:
"SELECT tpoPOLine.Status, tpoPOLine.POKey, tpoPOLine.ItemKey, tpoPOLine.POLineNo, tpoPOLine.UnitCost, tpoPOLine.ExtAmt" & Chr(13) & "" & Chr(10) & "FROM mas500_DII_app.dbo.tpoPOLine tpoPOLine" & Chr(13) & "" & Chr(10) & "WHERE (tpoPOLine.POKey=*E2 from Part 1*) OR (" _
, _
"tpoPOLine.POKey=*E3 from Part 1* ) OR (tpoPOLine.POKey=*E4 from Part 1*)" & Chr(13) & "" & Chr(10) & "ORDER BY tpoPOLine.POKey" _
)
Now my problem is that sometimes the E column from part one ends up being 1 row, sometimes it ends up being 50 rows. I would like the code to change accordingly.
1. Pull everything from the SQL server filter once in excel. This is not as efficient as the database has ~300,000 rows in the tpoPOline table and would take a lot longer then needed.
2. Create a nested if table and
Change
Code:
WHERE (tpoPOLine.POKey=*E2 from Part 1*) OR (tpoPOLine.POKey=*E3 from Part 1* ) OR (tpoPOLine.POKey=*E4 from Part 1*)"
to the value of that nested if table
The nested if table would be something like =if(isblank(E2),"E1",if(isblank(E3)... etc for ~50 rows. I know the syntax is incorrect but you get my point.
3. Rerun the query for each value in column E. That would require the connection to happen ~50 times which would not be that great, as well as I would have to copy and paste the data after each run as the tables cannot overlap.
What I am looking for is a way to run this only once, on one sheet, without writing a nested if table with 50 if's.

An original text string entry appearing in an Excel cell would be:
"N7C Neuroprotective J5Z Antiviral, other M2Z Antiarthritic, other J5A Antiviral, anti-HIV"
I need to extract N7C, J5Z, M2Z and J5A from this string and list these alphanumeric values in separate cells adjacent to the original text string. The challenge is that these alphanumeric references may appear in different positions within the original string with no fixed value e.g. a "," separating them. The alphanumeric references may also be 3 or 4 characters in length and there may be different numbers of alphanumeric references in the original string.
Another example would be (very different from the first):
"T2Z Recombinant, other K5B Radio-chemoprotective J3Z Antibacterial, other D3A Vulnerary A10C Symptomatic antidiabetic K6Z Anticancer, other R8A Antiasthma B6A Septic shock treatment I1Z Immunostimulant, other S1Z Ophthalmological R8B Antiallergic, non-asthma M1A1 Anti-inflammatory"
You can see that in this further example "A10C" & "M1A1" are 4 character alphanumeric strings wheras the others feature 3 characters.

I need to some spaces to the end of a string to make it up to 36 chars.
The original string can vary in size based on the courier name.
i.e. : business direct invoice 40617 = 29 chars
i.e. : TNT post invoice 4061755 = 24 chars
Can someone point me in the right direction to be able to concat' some spaces on the end to make it up to 36 chars.
Would this be easier done using VB?
