# Match Formula Returning Values

Jan 27, 2014
I have two tabs (In-Transit) & (AC) column A in both sheet have a "Concatenate" that i copied and pasted and values only and also switch the format to "Text" on both tabs. I do a vlookup

[Code] ......

and it returns the results i want....But then i was thinking due to the volume of data what if the value in column A is found twice on tab "AC".. i wouldn't know with a "Vlookup".

So trying to build a Index/Match formula

[Code] ....

I also returns some good results, but i also get some back as #REF. I also get #NA and both of the formulas and those are valid no matches...

making a forumla that will return the second, third ewtc values using VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH. Attached is a dummy file almost identical to the one I'm working in. In the first sheet there's a dependent drop-down list with the values Sub1, Sub2 and Sub3. This corresponds with data in sheet two listed next to these names. The problem is when I try to populate the table below using VLOOKUP etc it just repeats the first row over and over rather than defaulting to the second and third row results

I have a spreadsheet, with a Match Formula, that appears not to work. It looks at cell F1, and scans through cell C2:C14, and want it to return the relevant row in Column B (My work network will not allow me to upload the file). Cell F1 is the name of the sheets within the workbook (one for every month). However my data currently only has Apr - Jun, but when I choose month May, the formula feturns Month June.

how I can keep a running total of information added to a different worksheetS. They would not always be the same peson ID so I would like to return a match on any unique ID number found on multiple worksheets and add their values on a master front sheet. i.e this becomes a running total of items purchased per ID number.

I am trying to find a formula that populates a room number based on the number of hours used. I have a chart that is by building but multiple rooms within each.

Where I am having trouble is when there are more than one room with the same number of hours used then sometimes the formula populates the wrong room number.

Attached is my example spreadsheet of my chart. Book1.xlsx

I have shown what I need, what I have tried and a blank space to show where I need it to go.

I have a worksheet with a data sheet that has the values for a number of portfolios over a time period (one month)then I have a corresponding sheet for each portfolio (in the attached example I have included only portfolio 1). What I am trying to do is to make a formula in the sheet Portfolio 1 that matches the date in the Portfolio 1 sheet with the data sheet and by matching the date returning the value for the Portfolio 1 for the date ie date 2008-06-01 should return for portfolio 1 (from the data sheet) 500.

I have tried with varying Index and matching formulas and I do believe that this is the way to go.

The attached workbook has two tabs:

1. Burn Rate - this is where I need my formula to calculate

2. prorder - this is where the table will be

What I need:

1) from 'Burn Rate', get the 'PO ID' we will look up in the table.

2) go to 'prorder' - when the 'PO ID' there matches that same 'PO ID' from the other worksheet - take the value in column F - this is the number that will be averaged.

In other words - in 'Burn Rate', for a given 'PO ID' (column A), I want to average all of the values that are found in column F in 'prorder', and return that average to 'Burn Rate' (column B).

I am attempting to use the LARGE formula to pull the top 3-5 percentages out of a field of 50-100, while using the INDEX/MATCH function to pull the corresponding "descriptor" that is associated with those top 3-5 percentages. (I need to do this across multiple data sets, but I can't get past this 'duplicate' issue) However, I am running into the problem when there are 2 percentages that are identical (WH 14 and WH 16 in pasted text below), then the INDEX/MATCH function only pulls the 1st "descriptor" and doesn't continue down to the Duplicate. how to tell excel to move to the next set of duplicate data and match the 'descriptor' to that data?

I have attached a file that should show what I am trying to do. These are the formulas I am using right now, pulled down into the 3 cells below them to get the top 3.

Not sure where to start with this one, an IF statement or vlookup? Basically I have 3 columns A, B, C (original sheet) and A, B, C in my working sheet. A contains car registrations, B contains a date and C contains a weight. I need to return C from my original sheet into my working sheet only when A and B BOTH match from my working sheet (there are scenarios where the same car registration has a different date next to it). So I want to return the weight only when the car registration and the date match in a specific instance from my working sheet.

I'm using vlookup to get a price for a unit of measure and it passes the value of the lesser not the greater. Is there anyway to get vlookup to pick the closest match as the greater value not the lesser one?

For example:

1000 units costs $8,000

4000 units cost $23,000

12000 units cost $68,000

If someone wants to buy 2500 units, I'd like the vlookup to pass the price based on 4000 units, but it passes 8,000 the value on 1000 units.

Can I use vlookup to give me the result of the greater unit not the lesser?

Range A: {A56, B43, C98, D44}

the function would return D44. Is it possible at all with functions or do I need a macro?

I am trying to find the 2nd occurrence in a range of text along 1 column and return the cell one to the left of that 2nd occurrence. I will also need to find the 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc occurences, down the column.

So far, I have a working formula to find the first occurrence and it looks like this:

=INDEX(INDIRECT(A2),MATCH("*SS*",INDEX(INDIRECT(A2),0,2),0),1)

How would I find the 2nd occurrence?

what if the formula looked like this?

how would I find it's 2nd occurrence?

{=INDEX(INDIRECT(A2),MATCH(TRUE,ISNUMBER(MATCH(INDEX(INDIRECT(A2),0,2),{"CF","LF","RF","OF"},0)),0),1)}

I am not sure where I am going wrong as the column references returned values that they should. However, the values in Col H from details sheet are not being summed up based on the criteria into monthly sheet.

I am getting zero amounts.

I need to return the column header in a table which corresponds to the column that the value I'm querying is in. I've been trying to use the INDEX function coupled with MATCH and COLUMNS function but I'm not getting anywhere. I've found on the web a solution that uses SUMPRODUCT but I can't get that to work either. Unfortunately, I can't supply the data I'm working with as it is confidential. I know my question would be easier to answer if I could supply it.

I am looking for a formula that will satisfy the following:

1) find all the values in column "A" that match

2) In column "G", sum up all the values in "F" that go with the matching values in column "A"

3) For example, in rows 14-16, the values in column "A" match. Cell G16 sums up F14:F16

I am currently using the Match and index functions to search for specific criteria and return specific data based on that criteria. The problem is the formula is returning the first value at the beginning of the month rather then the end of the month value that I am asking for. I have my criteria set to zero so it should be a perfect match. with the live worksheet I have several tabs for different years. I want to take the end of month balance on each of those year tabs for each month in each fiscal year and add them together. My formula only has the one month because I am unable to get it to work much less adding in all of the years information. I have the employees choosing EOM for the last transaction posted during that month and that calculates the month number in the field next to it. I was thinking I could use the match to look for a specific month in that column and return the balance adjacent to it at that point.

I am building a tool for work, and in one of the sections of the main worksheet, I would like the cells to pull specific data from another worksheet that contains the results of a web query. The web query pulls a table of data, with a double header (rows 3 and 4). One column header is for the date and the other is for the time the data below corresponds to. There are also row titles along the left hand side.

I need a formula that will find the column that meets two conditions:

1) Today's date

2) A specific time (referenced from a cell on the main sheet)

It must then pull the data from the cell in that column that is in the row marked "Total".

Here is an example of the data set from the web query:

Excel 2010BCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZAAABACADAEAFAGAHAIAJAKALAMANAOAPAQARASATA

UAVAWAXAYAZBABBBCBDBEBFBGBHBIBJBKBLBMBNBOBPBQBRBSBT3

Total19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-Nov19-

Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-Nov20-

Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-Nov21-

Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-Nov22-

Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-Nov23-

[Code]......

I have done quite a bit of looking on the web and tried out several different formulas/variations. I think I'm getting close, but just can't get it quite right. Here are a couple that seem close and their results:

=INDEX('Rodeo Data'!$D$5:$JS$50,MATCH("Total",'Rodeo Data'!$B$5:$B$50,0),MATCH(J3,'Rodeo Data'!$D$4:$JS$4,0)*AND(MATCH(TODAY(),'Rodeo Data'!$D$3:$JS$3,1)))

This one correctly finds the date and "Total" row, but seems to ignore the MATCH(J3,'Rodeo Data'!$D$4:$JS$4,0) section, which is designed to find the specific time in row 4. It returns either the "Total" row value from the first or last column with the correct date depending on which match type argument I use.

=INDEX('Rodeo Data'!$D$5:$JS$50,MATCH("Total",'Rodeo Data'!$B$5:$B$50,0),MATCH(TODAY()&O3,'Rodeo Data'!$D$3:$JS$3&'Rodeo Data'!$D$4:$JS$4,))

This one returns the standard "#N/A" error message.

I am using Windows 7 and Excel 2010. "Rodeo Data" is the name of the sheet that contains the web query data I have included. The J3 and O3 references are cells in the main worksheet that contain the time I want the match function to find.

The desired output from the formula would be if I referenced it to today (20 Nov 2012) and 19:45, it would return the value of 65,826.

It may also be worth noting that the number of columns and rows in the data set is dynamic.

I have two sheets of data , sheet A and Sheet B.

Sheet B contains a column called "Name" and for each name, and for each name there are corresponding numbers. In sheet A, I have a "list of interest" in column A. What i want to do look through the data in sheetB to find a match from the list of interest and return the corresponding letters, located in column A.

I have filled out the first two rows of results that should be returned as an example.

One idea i had was to put a vlookup formula in each column result 1 to result 6 so i can catch all 6 "Serves" columns from column B, but there may be duplicates in the serve columns and vlookup only reports the first match.

I have used several IF and AND functions in the past in order to check to see if 2 values = true and return a third.

(for example =IF(AND(A1>10,B1<20),C1,"")

However I can't seem to figure out the senario below.

I have 2 coulmns, Column A has dates and Column B has a numeric value

I need to check to see if column A falls between 2 dates and returns the sum of column B

For example if have 100 rows and 10 of those rows have dates that fall between 06/01/09 and 07/01/09 then add up column b for those 10 rows and return the value.

i have a formula that looks up data from a pivot table....the pivot relates to a data request log and a pricing request log - both separate. the data request log and pricing request log includes data and pricing activities....some are only data, some only pricing, a few are both - each activity has its own unique request number - if both data and pricing then the request number will be the same

so the pivot looks up a request number eg F1.....it counts how many actions there are for this request number (eg request F1 may have 6 actions) and displays this number. eg F1 data only request....6 actions.....no pricing activities/request...the pivot will display 6 under the column Data but then returns the value #N/A under the column pricing if no actions/request found for pricing...i want this to return "blank" if there are no actions/request found under either pricing or data. the formula used is as follows:

under the column named data:

=VLOOKUP(J7,'DATA PIVOT'!A7:D150,3,FALSE)

under the column named pricing:

=VLOOKUP(J7,'PRICING PIVOT'!A7:D150,3,FALSE)

i think that because FALSE is used this returns the value #N/A?

I have been able to get the following code to work (which simply returns the start of data on a sheet):

Sub FindDataStart( )

Dim lRow As Long

Dim lColumn As Integer

For lRow = 1 To Rows.Count

For lColumn = 1 To Columns.Count

If Trim( Cells(lRow, lColumn).Value) <> "" Then

Goto EXIST

Else

End If

Next lColumn

Next lRow

EXIST:

Exit Sub

End Sub

Now I want to build on what I have learned so far and from another Sub, I want to call the FindDataStart sub and have it return the row and column # (from where the data starts).

I started by making the following changes to the FindDataStart sub but got stuck

Changed :

Sub FindDataStart( )

To:

Sub FindDataStart( RowNumb As Long, ColNumb As Integer)

I also added the following line to the end of the FindDataStart sub

FindDataStart = (lRow, lColumn)
