Jun 26, 2014

Open And Close File With No Extension

Feb 21, 2013

I opened a file, by file I mean a "file" with no extension that has commas separating it.

So I recorded a macro to open up the file and this works fine.

How do I close it? I tried

wk1 = ThisWorkbook.Name 'Main Worksheet
...
Workbooks(wk1).Activate
ActiveWindow.Close

But the problem is that "wk1" is not set equal to the name, probably because the file is not an excel file, it has no extension.

How To Save File With Correct File Extension (XLS Or XLSX)

Mar 12, 2014

How can I save worksheet from existing workbook as a new workbook with extension .xls or .xlsx depending on the version of Excel on which the original was opened and no matter the extension of original?

My code that I was trying to create all above does not work, because even if I am using Excel 2007, 2010 or 2013 it will still be saving only as .xls.

File Format Or File Extension Not Valid

Sep 20, 2013

I saved my worksheet in vba .xlsx and for some reason, when I go to the folder that it's saved in and try to open the file I get an error message saying "excel cannot open the file 'PO Acks fo 09-20-2013.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file"

This is weird because I have another file that I save right before this that opens just fine without an error. Getting frustrating. When I go into the ~Users folder it shows as an excel file and saved as .xlsx.

Where would the link be missing?

Here is the code

Code:
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:= _
"G:PURCHASINGSupplier ServicesGroupSharePublic~UsersPO Acks for " & Format$(Date, "mm-dd-yyyy") & ".xlsx"

The problem is i am using an excel macro using VBA and once the file is opened the VBA execution quits.

The excel file turns out to be an xml file which excel can open the file and have the VBA continue running if i RENAME the file with an "xlsx" extension. The problem is that i cant ask the user to rename the file.........how do i get VBA to open the file without an issue?

Determine File Extension With FileSearch Method

Aug 23, 2007

I am attempting to write a macro that will open every file in a given folder, then save the files with a new file names while keeping the original file extension. The files I'm opening with excel have file extensions of ".VA", ".TOU", and ".KVA". The new file names I want to save the files with are contained in cell A1.

An example would be:
The excel macro opens file "R003890.TOU"
The macro assigns a the value in cell "A1" (B1040) to a variable
The macro assigns the file extension (.TOU) to a variable
The macro saves the file as file name variable and file extension variable (B1040.TOU)

Master Workbook - Saving File With XLSX Extension

Jun 23, 2014

I have a master workbook that contains macros and has an xlsm extension.

One macro in the workbook copies one of the worksheets to a new workbook. I then want to save this new workbook as an xlsx file. I use the following code line:

.SaveAs Filename:=Extract_Save_Name & ".xlsx", FileFormat:= _
xlOpenXMLWorkbookMacroEnabled, CreateBackup:=False

However, when I run the code I get an error:

"This extension cannot be used with the selected file type."

The new workbook does not contain any macros and if I save the workbook "manually" as an xlsx it saves fine.

If I change the code above to have "xlsm" it works fine - but I don't want that extension.

Get Highest Number From File Name?

May 23, 2014

I want to get highest number from filenames in a folder.

for example below are files in folder

AB-1234-001.plt
AB-1234-002.plt
AB-1234-003.plt
AB-1234-004.plt So I want to get "004"

XY-12345-001.plt
XY-12345-002.plt
XY-12345-003.plt
XY-12345-004.plt
----
----
XY-12345-075.plt
XY-12345-076.plt Here I want to get "076"

file format is same but some times 4 digits in middle (AB-1234-001.plt) and some time 5 digits (XY-12345-001.plt)

My idea is , counting files ignoring suffix (eg 001,002,003) and count howmany are in folder. So code counts based on AB-1234 and return me value how.

Highest Number From File Names In Folder

Dec 22, 2009

I need a macro which checks for next available number from list of filenames in a folder. Then it returns that value to one predefined cell in a new document (here Untitled.xls). For example:

c: est

has the following files:
Untitled.xls - read only
abc-09-001.xls
abc-09-002.xls
abc-09-003.xls
abc-09-004.xls

Next available filename should be "abc-09-005" and macro returns that value to predefined cell in a new document (Untitled.xls). There should be NO saving at this point whatsoever. Macro simply picks the next value from a filelist. As you've noticed the value has some constants too. New document doesn't know the last picked value before macro is active (predefined cell should be empty at startup).

Get Open File Name To Open Multiple Files

Jul 3, 2007

I'm doing the following:

Dim myname As String
myname = Application. GetOpenFilename

I use it to attempt to open first a QuickBooks file and then an excel workbook.
The Quickbooks file opens fine. The Excel workbook never appears to open but
I do get the full file pathname to my excel workbook returned which I then
parse off to get just the workbook name.

Why would it behave this way? I open both these files manually all the time.

Also, I'm trying to use a filter as follows:

myname = Application.GetOpenFilename("*.QBW")

I get a compile error saying that I'm calling the function wrong.

Macro To Open File Saved In Same Location But File Name Changes With Each Date

Feb 8, 2013

I do routine tasks every day which involves opening 3 different files and pasting data into my main file. The data is always in the same format, and the 3 files are saved in the same location (3 different folders through). The 3 files are saved each day and the naming convention is constant, with only the date changing. For example, the files are always saved in C:My Documents and the files are called test_05.02.2013.xls. Tomorrow the file will be called test_06.02.2013.xls and so on.

So each day I will be rolling a file forward and I want to bring in the info from each of these files based on the new day.

How to do 1, and I will do the others (because the concept will be the same).

This will be a part of a macro I'm making. The rest of the macro will just format the file and combine a few ones from different departments.
