Prevent User To Enter Duplicate Using Data Validation?
Dec 27, 2013I want to prevent user from entering duplicate text or numbers in a cell using the Data Validation.
View 9 RepliesI want to prevent user from entering duplicate text or numbers in a cell using the Data Validation.
View 9 RepliesI'm using Excel 2010, and I need to restrict the value the user can enter into a cell (E9).
In cell E3 is the screen width (pixels). eg 6024
In cell E5 is the preferred width of a window. eg 450
The user, in cell E9, enters an x coordinate for which they prefer the top left corner of the window whose width is specified in E5.
If the value that the user enters in E9, added to the width entered in E5, exceeds the value of E3, (if E9+E5 > E3) then the value should be disregarded (window will be off right of screen) and the user re-enter.
I'm not familiar with the use of data validation, so I'm uncertain as to how to use it in this circumstance.
How do I set up a custom validation formula to prevent duplicate enties?
For example I I've already enter the song name 19 and Paul Hardcastle (BandName), how do I set it up where I can not enter that combination again on a row?
I was wanting to use a custom CountIF function but I could not get it to work.
A
B
Song
BandName
19

I have a user form that has a combo box "City" two text boxes one called "Flight" and the other "Date". What I'm trying to do is to prevent the user from saving the data input from the user form if any of those three fields is left blank. The code that I have so far checks all of the required fields, if any are left blank a message notifys which field(s) is left blank and return the focus back to that field. But the rest of code also fires.
What I really need is either to stop the code if any fields are blank and return the focus back to the blank field, the user completes the field(s) and clicks the save again, or better yet, pause the code until all the required fields are completed and then complete the save. (There is actually another 200+ lines of code in this sub, but I deleted it to keep the post a little shorter.)
I have a worksheet that you can enter in
Forename, Surname, Area, D.O.B
This has a macro assigned that copies the data and pastes it into another worksheet at the next available row.
Now this works fine, but I want to be able to identify if the data already exists in the other worksheet then prevent it from being pasted and give an error message that the person already exists in the database.
Is this possible?
When users paste data into cell , I need to protect data validation/ conditional formatting etc. How can one do this?

Attached is a sample that I found on the forums. The current code does not allow any paste functionality.

I wish to prevent the use of the " ' " apostrophe in an entire column and I was wondering if this can be done with conditional formatting including a message of some type.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am working pivot tables off of one large excel spreadsheet for my data. I have multiple pivot tables on each of 5 worksheets. The problem is this. Every other week I am sent an updated spreadsheet with the same column names each week which I then copy and paste it into the spreadsheet of the last one. When I refresh the pivot tables, I end up with duplicate field sets. For example, on column in the original data sheet is gender. On the first sheet I went through and renamed the "M"'s and "F"s to be "Male" and "Female" so that it is better looking when printed. Now when i get the new information and copy and paste it to rplace the old, and refresh the pivot tables, I end up with "Male" "Female" AND "M" "F". Now the "Male" and "Female" fields are empty and the "M" and "F" fields have the information. Is this a result of me renaming the fields?
View 5 Replies View RelatedShould be simple but I can't get this to work,
I have used =value(a1) that prevents any formula, but it also prevents a zero being entered.
I have amended trying and/or statements in the validation but then it allows zeros and formulas!
I'm looking for a formula which will enable typing (in cell A1) positive numbers between 0-1000000 but will prevent the user from leaving that cell in an empty state. Empty cell means: cell with space(s) or deleting the legitimate value that is, already, in it).
I must emphasize that I know how to handle this by VBA code and/or by using a "named" pre-defined list of values + un-checking the "ignore empty cell" option - but I would like to know, once and for all, the solution WITHOUT using Macro and/or 'List' (if any..)
I tried that, without success:
=AND(A1>=0,A1<=100000,NOT(ISBLANK(A1))
I set up a spread*** with drop-down menus for some of the cells. The user can only select values from that list and an error message pops up when something is typed it that is not in the list (via Data Validation
Error Alert).
So this works all fine ... except if the user copies and pastes a cell with a different drop-down menu into a cell overwriting the existing validation.
I cannot totally lock the work*** and if I lock the cells with the drop-down menus nothing can be changed. So how can I prevent this from happening? Is there a way to block all copy/paste operations that are copying the validation? I know that with the Paste Special I can have cells copied without the validation.
I have created a userform with 3 text boxes. It also has three buttons - clear, Cancel and Generate record button.
User form takes entries in the three text boxes and on clicking the Generate Record button, the values of the three Text Boxes are inserted in Column A, B and C of sheet1. The columns keep on populating with new data on each submit in the row below the last record.
Now it is required to enter data only if the value entered in TextBox1 is new and has not been entered previously in column A. If textbox entry is already aviailable in column A, a message box of 'Record available' shoud be prompted and the text entry must not be allowed until the data entered in TextBox1 is not unique.
I have 4 textboxes that the user enters data. I then have a button on the user form.
i would like to write code so that when the user hits the button...
Textbox1 data goes into active cell
Textbox2 data into the cell below Active cell
Textbox3 below it
and textbox4 below it
then close the user form.
I have a userform with several textboxes and 2 comboboxes. The data that I need protected from duplication is based in the comboboxes. If I ignore the other fields and presume the following it may be easier to understand:
The comboboxes are populated by the data stored in sheet1 and when the userform is complete, the OK button populates all the data into sheet2
Combobox1 contains names eg, John, Julie, Bob etc
Combobox2 contains colours eg, Red, Blue, Green etc
I want the userform to allow the data to be entered into sheet2 only if it is not an exact duplicate of the choices in BOTH of the comboboxes
For Example
John Red
Julie Red
Bob Blue
John Blue
These are all ok, however, to try and enter John Red again would bring up a message box indicating a duplicate entry and prevent the data from being entered.
Can data validation be used to enter a text message if no numeric value is entered in the cell?
I want to force the cell to have to be populated with a number and if not show "--".
I have used data validation to colour rows in one of my spreadsheets at work. The column that uses the data validation is the first column and has a drop down list of 5 words. One of which is collected, which currently indicates when the card has been collected by the individual in question and no further attention is required. It colours the rest of the row green. There is also a column that is entitled 'Date Collected'. Instead of having to input this manually, is there a way to automatically enter the date to be the date that the 'Collected' value was selected?
The title is misleading, I realise there will need to be some sort of IF statement in the 'Date Collected' column. It's been a long day already.
I've been going round in circles with this for hours and have got no-where. I 'm trying to get Excel to paste in a set pattern of data based on an input cell.
In row 1 I have months starting in cell B1. B1 = April 12, C1 = May 12, D1 = June 12, and so on
The user would enter the data in column A, starting in row 2
If the date in A2 = May 12 then Excel would enter 10 in cell C2, 20 in cell D2 and 30 in cell E2. If the date in A2 is changed to June 12, then the previous data would be cleared and Excel would enter 10 in E2, 20 in F2 and 30 in G2.
Date would be entered in A3, A4, A5 etc and I would want it to post the same fixed data depending on the date the user enters in teh relevant row.
I've tried IF statements and also some code but can't even get near it working.
An Excel file named CLEARING is availble in thr central server system. it will be accessed by 5 or 6 staffs from some other systems what i need is when one person accesses/edits this file the others should not even able to open in the read only file ,when the file is saved and closed ,then only the next person should access it
View 1 Replies View RelatedBasically, in the "Thisworkbook" code , i have some code in the Workbook_BeforeClose section. Currently , it autosaves the workbook in a folder i have specified.
However, i need to add some code.I want to check that a certain cell has a value in it before the user closes the workbook, and if the cell is empty, show a messagebox asking him to enter a value.
I know how to get a messagebox to pop up, the only thing is once the user clicks the OK button,
i need the rest of the code execution to pause, allowing him to make the change then if he clicks the "X" (top right of the screen) to close the file or application, the filesave dialog appears and he can then save the document.
how to go about this because at the moment when user clicks ok, the messagebox just disappears and filesave dialog appears and he doesn't have a chance to edit the cell.
I am trying to display a message box for the user if there is "agency" in cell o8 but nothing in p8... I tried the following code but it doesnt work..
If Range("o8").Value = "Agency" And Range("p8").Value = "" Then
MsgBox "Please provide name of agency in cell p8"
Sheet9.Shapes("cross").Visible = True

I'd like to create a drop down list in data validation from a column of data that contains numerous duplicates.
For example, let's say column A contained hundreds of transactions with either North, South, East and West, how could I create a drop down list in another cell that only had four selection options?
I have a spreadsheet that needs to have a validation drop down list in three cells in every row (D, E, F). There are three items in the list, say, "One", "Two" and "Three".
My only problem is that there can only be one entry of "One" in each row.
Is there a way to have a data validation drop down menu but at the same time allowing users to enter free text as well.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have to enter patient's SSN's into my database. The fastest and most error free way to do this is simply copy the SSN from the electronic chart and paste into the appropriate cell in the database. I don't want duplicates. So, I need the database to alert me when I paste in a duplicate SSN. I know you can set data validation to do prohibit duplicates by using a formula. In the attached spreadsheet the SSN is in column B, so:
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have attached a sheet that I'm having an issue with. Columns D and E on the Dim Calculator sheet have a data validation formula in the cell. It works in the sense that it pops up if they are outside the parameters that I want them to hit. However, if the user clicks the Cancel button they can just keep going on even though the entry in the cell is aganist the validation.
Example: Columns D and E cannot be larger than Column C. Currently now if Columns D or E are larger than Column C the validation error pops up. But I can just click on cancel and keep going. That is what I want to prevent.
Is there a way to grey out the cancel button?
Should I do something else within the validation itself?
The text box where the end user types in the data - I want to make this have a drop down list like when using data validation but dont have a clue how to.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to learn the concepts, then apply them to a set of actual worksheets. I am trying to use named ranges from one worksheet in another worksheet. The named ranges need to expand. Although I can get the add data to a dummy worksheet to work within the same worksheet and I can even get a named range to work in the foreign sheet.
My problem is, when I can end up adding the additional data to the named range, it will only add one name. I have a number of named ranges that are referenced on various worksheets. The idea is, certain named ranges should be able to expand so I donft have to type them all in. (There could be hundreds of manufacturers or models.) I would also like them to be able to sort themselves after additional names are added to the named ranges. I would also like them to auto populate as well. I am using Excel 2003 SP3 (11.8307.8221). I have enclosed the file. Drop down lists (named ranges) are on the worksheet called DROP DOWN LISTS (LOCKED) **ITfS NOT CURRENTLY LOCKED**.
The data validation issues are on the worksheet called Rev7.0 Wood (Basic Sheet.) There are other instances to use these, but I hope to learn to do them myself on the other worksheets. Of particular interest is Column f.................
I have a file where I need the user to fill in a value in a single cell (A1) in order for the data validation I have set up in column B to work. Can I set up a second data validation in the cells in column B? Or is there a way to enter a data validation in cell B11 that would error the user if A1 is not filled in, and circle the cell (A1) that they need to fill in? B11 currently returns the sum of B3:B10.
