Using A Named Range In Data Validation
Feb 11, 2010Is there any way to use a Named Range in the "Source" field in a Data Validation? I have multiple sheets in a workbook that have the same layout, and I am using alot of different Data Validations. My problem is that whenever I need to change, or add a choice to one of these, I have to go to each sheet and change the Data Validations that are effected by that change. Is there a way to use a "Named Range" or something to put all of my acceptable choices, for that Data Validation, in one spot. And make any changes I had to that field.

How to do, like if I in A2 I will choose Audi or Porshe then automatically in B2 will show Euro?
Data Validation In Range Of Cells
Nov 6, 2009In need data validation in a range of cells (lets keep it to A1 for the example please). The data being entered is a 9 digit number, which needs to satisfy the following:
The 7th and 8th characters should be equal to an even number and be greater than zero, but less than 35.
Example 1: If 123456789 is entered in the cell, this would return an error because 78 (although being an even number) is above 35.
Example 2: If 987654321 is entered in the cell this would be allowed as 32 is an even number and less than 35.

Jan 16, 2007I have been trying to figure this out for days and have searched on all the postings and cannot find my answer. I am working off of two worksheets. Sheet #1 has 3 columns. Column A "Type of Bar", Column B "Type of Activation", Column C "Amount Spent". Column A has 2 drop down boxes, Pub & Nightclub. Column B has 2 drop down boxes, Sampling & Training. Sheet #2 is is a tracker that is going to add up certain criteria off of Sheet 1. For example, I need to get the sum of All Pubs and Sampling. I also need to track All Pubs and Training, Nightclub and Sampling and Nightclub and Training. I have tried the SUMIF, IF, and Conditional Sum. I keep running into a RANGE error.

I already know how to obtain that list as another Validation Drop Down, but not quite sure how to make those values appear in a range instead of a Validation List.

Data Validation List With Range Names
Feb 5, 2009I have a monthly report showing actuals and budget for current month (or quarter) and year to date. Range names have been created for (1) each month, (2) each quarter and (3) year to date). I'm using the SUMPRODUCT function to extract information by account. For example:

This formula works except I have to replace the "ACT_Jan" each month accordingly. Can a data validation list be created with the range names so that updating this formula monthly can be simplified? For example, changing "ACT_Jan" to "ACT_Feb" with a drop down list.

Dynamic Named Range As Validation Lists
Nov 13, 2006In the attached example I have a column of data on worksheet 2. Extra rows will frequently be added and removed from the column. I want to use that column of data to populate a validation drop down box for a whole column of cells on sheet 1. (Target cells coloured yellow for demonstration purposes)
I don’t want the validation drop down to be full of blank rows so I set up a dynamic named range to refer to the column on Sheet2. It all works really well...but...only for cell D6 on sheet 2. It doesn’t work on any of the other target cells on sheet 2 or on sheet 1. I have been looking at this for far too long and it has begun hurting my brain.
Validation List To Combo Box Without A Named Range
Dec 5, 2007I'm creating a sheet that takes three Validation Lists into account. The first two lists are based on named regions. The third list uses the first two lists to narrow a search down so that the user can pick what they want from a smaller selection. I'm using the code from Contextures.com to allow the user to double click the validation list to pop up a Combo Box. This allows me to show more than 8 selections at a time and also gives a little freedom on font and font size.

Since the third list is not based on a named region but rather code to compare the two previous lists, when I double click the third validation list a blank combo box pops up. it possible to pop up what ever lists are in the validation boxes.
This is the code that I have in the third validation box which States "The Source Currently evaluates to an error" but works fine for some reason. =OFFSET(CategoryStart, MATCH(B4, CategoryColumn, 0) - 1, IF(A4 = "Description", 2, IF(A4 = "ExtDescription", 3, IF(A4 = "PartNumber",4))), COUNTIF(CategoryColumn,B4), 1)
I tried making a named region that was based on the code, so that the list could change as the user selected different options from the first two lists. This gave me the same problems as I had before.
Data Validation: Avoid Duplicates In A Range

In that I have data table like this:

In the above table I want to enter in another column or row, a number which is not available in the given table (i.e. no duplication is allowed). (This table may grow both column & row wise). If, duplication is there the message box should say that the value already exist. And, if possible, the existing value can be colored with any color, so that we can easily find out where it is.
1) how to name a offset table and
2) how to avoid duplicate value when entered? Is data validation is one solution?

But I lack clarity in my understanding of referencing.

Set Maximum Number Of Entries In A Range - Data Validation?
Dec 8, 2012Basically in cells b12:b26 (15 cells) I need to enter the type of item (which is limited to 2 items). I made a drop down list for that range which works perfectly, therefore the user can choose either item 1 or item 2 or blank. However, I need to figure out a way so that item 1 can be chosen a maximum of 10 times in the range, and item 2 can only be chosen 5 times in that same range..
I am assuming that you can't add that condition to the drop down list... So I was thinking of adding an extra column duplicating b12:b26 (c12:=b12 etc...)- and entering a data validation there.
I was going to enter the following:
if item 1 is chose : =NOT(COUNT($c$12:$c$26)>10) &
if item 2 is chosen: =NOT(COUNT($c$6:$c$6)>5).
However, for some reason it doesn't work - it doesn't block the entry if I try to enter 11 item 1s or 6 item 2s.

Oct 30, 2012I have been tasked with creating a data validation list. My data is contained on a separate sheet from my data validation list. I am using a named range to use the data for my data validation list. However, I am looking to add a criteria to my data validation list so that it only is populated with values based on another column on my data sheet.
For example, if I have a data sheet called "Employee" and I have two columns. Column A is a list of employee names and I have named a range in column A as "EmployeeName". Column B is used to define the category of employee. This value is a letter, for example, "A", "B", "C", or "D". This column does not have a named range as I don't know if I need one to get this to work.
I would like the data validation on one sheet to use a list of employees of a particular class from another sheet. Straight forward validation is easy using a validation list with a formula =EmployeeName. But how do I only list employees that have a category "A"? For some reason, I cannot get some of the formulas I have found while searching this message board to work.

Data Validation Fails With Named Range Of Array Of Constants?
Oct 27, 2013I've set up a Named Range that refers to an array of constants, e.g. MyRange ={1,2,3,4,5}. This appears to be fine since I can output the named range to a range of cells in a row (e.g. A1:E1) and see 1,2,3,4,5 (one value in each column).
I'd like to use MyRange as the source for a Data Validation list in a cell.
Normally data validation list sources must be vertical, so I've set MyRange =TRANSPOSE({1,2,3,4,5}). This appears to be fine since I can output the named range to a range of cells in a column (e.g. A1:A5) and see 1,2,3,4,5 (one value in each row).
When I set MyRange as the source for data validation however, it resolves to an error.
why this setup doesn't work?

Selecting Named Range From Dropdown Validation List To Use In Formula?
Jan 18, 2013Basically on a summary page, on sheet 1 say I have a formula which picks up the unit cost (I have this as an array across 5 years)
What I then want to do is multiply this by a volume driver. I have a list of these drivers on a seperate page, so for convenience lets say DRIVER_01,DRIVER_02 etc. These are also 5 years arrays.
So what I want to do it be able to select which driver I want to use for volume on the summary, from a drop down box I have set up, and then the formula pick up that named range, and not just recognise it as a text cell.
I need the ability to change the driver in the future, hence the drop down box. I can also get the unit array part to work fine, I'm just struggling to get this driver array to work..............

The codes in E column are what is entered in a worksheet range (user cannot see the list). Needed is to show both the two-character code in column E and the text definitions in column F in the dropdown. As data validation now works, users only see the two-character code and are not remembering what the code stands for - they need to see the definition.
Is there a way to show both the two-character code from column E along with the text in column F? When user selects, only the code would be entered in the target cell. (Is data validation the correct technique?)
I have set this problem up in closely located cells to construct the issue. In reality, the validation list is well off-screen from where the user is actually inserting the codes and there are many more codes/definitions.

Then I input an array with a few duplicate Item and us the function to
determine the list. So far I found that it worked for the following
function:

but this only gives me the number of unique items in the array. The
problem is when I try to use the following function:
{=TRANSPOSE(UniqueItems(A3:A26,FALSE))}
This now only returns a zero and if I fill down they all are zero.
I would like to get a list of unique items from this formula. Example
list would be:
{Array = Lorem, Lorem, foo, bar, bar} {Formula_returns = Lorem, foo,
bar}
I haven't a clue how to display this in a regular excel cell box so I
thought that using a validation list box would inherently work.

The total number of rows I use is 10, and the number of items in the dropdown list will be 30.
The data in the cells 2 to 10 does not change from that first set to its data menu name.
Clearing Validation Values Based On Another Validation
Nov 11, 2008A2's validation is dynamic as it's selectables varies based on the selection made by the A1 Validation. (=indirect(a1)).
My problem is this....once if have selected from both validations...if I go back and change the A1 validation to a blank (or empty value) or clear the contents on that cell....validation A2's value remains as it was. I would like it to recognize that A1 is blank and also become blank (or goto an empty value).
