Return Unique ID Based On Multi-Column Lookup
Dec 18, 2008
I'm looking for a formula (VBA I'm assuming) that will help me create a unique customer ID out of data that my website generates in order to import records into my accounting system.
I have a current list of customers in CSV format with the columns: CustomerID, CustomerName, CustomerZip
Each customer in our accounting system is assigned a unique,7 digit CustomerID in the format of XXX#### where XXX are the first 3 letters of their last name, and #### is a 4 digit number (with leading 0's) to create unique ID's for customer with the same first 3 characters of their last name. SAMPLE LIST:
SCH0001, Lindsey Schubert, 75230
SCH0002, Thomas Schoembs, 53132
ADA0001, Samantha Adams, 28205
...
What I'd like to do is pass the formula 3 parameters (Cust_First_Name, Cust_Last_Name, Zip) and have it parse the .CSV file and either return an existing customer's current ID or generate the appropriate new, unique ID, making sure in increase the 4 digit # accordingly and insert leading 0's if necessary.
Another caveat, if possible to work with, is the ability to also pass the formula another range of cells to append to the end of the .CSV file's data for comparison reasons. There are times when I'll bulk-import orders (or we receive numerous in the same batch) and the potential exists to have two customers that would have the same CustomerID created using JUST the .CSV data. Ie. If we use the example above and have new customers of Steve Schwab and Julie Schwitzer - we'd end up incorrectly assigning them both SCH0003, where if we'd read Steve Schwab's newly created info and customer ID of SCH0003, then Schwitzer would correctly be assigned SCH0004.

i just want to use vlookup and hlookup to give me the row and column headings for 30 to 40 sesor at a time.... but i keep getting #n/a whenever the functions meet a table of more than one column! (reduced workbook attached)
it should surely be simple to get this data - but i've struggled to no avail. I thought that having the four separate worksheets was the problem - but i haven't had any look even when i dump the data into a single worksheet!
i basically just want excel to return the cell reference of a sensor number which exists in a table. sometimes a sensor can appear more than once, but its not very common and i could happily work around that by doing the manual search (ctrl f, find all).
any advice would be very much appreciated, i'm struggling and the number of sensors i need to test will increase in the coming months.. please help!
should i even be using vlookup and hlookup? ive tried all the other excel functions, but they don't seem to be useful?

I have a listbox with 8 columns. Multiselect is enabled, and it must stay this way. As part of my program, after the user presses a command button, I need to use the row indexes of the selected rows in order to copy the selected information into an array which is then placed in a different listbox, and then delete the items from the original list. Pseudocode of what I want to do:
[Code] .....
But my understanding is that .ListIndex does not work this way with multiselect listboxes. I've tried searching for a solution for a while, but I cannot find one.

I have a worksheet (say, Sheet1) that I am going to manually import a large data set into on a weekly basis for reporting purposes. One of the columns from this data dump will have the header "Design Id" in the first row, but it may not be in the same column every time. I am trying to figure out how to create dropdown lists on a separate worksheet (say, Sheet2) in the same workbook where the data source always looks up the column containing the header "Design Id" from Sheet1 and then returns only the unique values from that column as options in the list.

The logic of the formula like this....
TAB X, Column A contains a data set, each row is a unique value. In column B of TAB X, I want to input a formula that performs the following logic: Search TAB Z, Column C, for an exact match of data contained in TAB X, Column A....and if found, look in TAB Z, Column D...if a blank cell is contained there, then in TAB X, Column A, say "Unsettled" ; however, if there does exist any character (not-blank) in TAB Z Column D, then in TAB X, COlumn A, say "Settled".....but, if the data ID listed in TAB X, column A is not found whatsoever in TAB Z, Column C, then say "NOT FOUND". So for example, within TAB X, Column A there is a unique ID in one of the rows "ABC123", then searches "ABC123" in TAB Z, Column C. If found, it looks in TAB Z, Column D and that cell is blank, so TAB X, Column B, same row that contains ABC123, the result is "Unsettled".

I have a chart:
ABCDE126143199167233153143310351018220110246817085151581166230162692149206173711417214213281273781662029132178200255
I need a formula to find the maximum value in C1:E9 and return the corresponding number in column A. In this instance, the answer would be 12. I've been trying to make it work with a combination of Offset and Max formulas, but since the maximum could be in any one of three columns, I don't know how to make it work.

In column CT between rows 11:210 is the vertical data that includes duplicates. I am looking to create a formula that can lookup each value between CT11:CT210 and return only the unique values horizontally starting in cell CW9 and onwards.
Example: CT11:CT14 looks like
5x20
6x4
5x20
5x8
and so on and so forth..
I would then like this formula to return the above data (which goes all the way to CT210) in this format starting in cell CW9 - 5x20 then CX9 - 6x4 and finally CY9 - 5x8.

I have a sheet with 3,000 rows and only two columns. Column "A" consists of 20 to 30 different names, column "B" consists of 50 to 60 different products. I need to be able to evalute the value in column A and copy, paste special transpose all values in Column B that have the same value in column A. As an example if cells A1 through A5 is "Arizona" and cell B1 is Broccoli, B2 is Cauliflower, B3 is Apples, B4 is Oranges, and B5 is Bananas, I want to copy B1 through B5 and paste special transpose to cell C1.
This then would need to loop all the way to the bottom of the data in Column A looking for a change in value. The attached file called Sample Data has two tabs. The one titled "report" shows the raw data, the one titled "Final" shows how I would like the results to appear (column L)

I have scoured the Excel boards but cannot find what I am looking for. Need to do a formula approach (No Pivot Table) lookup on a dynamic table that is not necessarily in order and may have blanks in some cells or whole rows. What I would like Excel 2003 to do is report (extract) the all first occurrences of each organization number that has at least one person with a "Yes" in a corresponding column in the same row. I also need the number of persons that have "Yeses" in each of those identified Org Nos .
Data is laid out as such:
Org No. Name Not in Compliance
8631Steve Yes
8631David
8631Nick
8631Tom
8631Susan Yes
8701Peter Yes
8701Diane Yes
8701Mary Yes
8879Don
8879Bernie
8879Wayne
8900David Yes
The answer is
In one row list the org #'s not in compliance ("Yes"). In the row just below it the number of persons:
86318701 8900
2 3 1
I have a helper column that counts the number of unique org nos, but cannot tie that to those that have Yes in the other column.
In column before Org No i have =IF(COUNTIF(b$33:b34,b34)=1,MAX(a$33:a33)+1,"") copied down.

I've been searching both here and on google but I've been unable to make use of any of the numerous suggestions and examples I've found to do this; given I'm right in thinking that this should be done with a vlookup!
I have a table in which different customers pay different prices for different products. C13 is a cell in which I want Excel to look up the correct value based on A13 and B13 (in this case C3).
I have no experience with lookup functions, which might be the reason why I can't get this to work. I bet it's pretty simple

I am looking for a solution other than using an advanced data filter for unique records only.
I would like to take a large list (columns A:D), and automatically filter for unique records and other conditions and paste the results in different tables (Group A & Group B).
Group A only includes records with value ="A" in the checksheet column.
Group B includes records with value <>"A" in the checksheet column.
Does anyone have any ideas how to do this so that when I paste the large list in columns A:D, the other tables (Group A & Group B) are automatically populated?

I've been searching the forums for this problem but I can't seem to find any answers. Anyway, this is the problem. See screenshot.
I want to compare A1 for the values in column B, then return the corresponding cell (column C) in column D.
e.g. D1 = 2, D2 = 1, D3 = 4, D4 = 5 and D5 = 3.

I have a large worksheet that lists employees and the hours they work each day in a pay period.
For Example:
Column A holds a date and Column E holds the number of hours worked for a paytype. So i want to create some function that sums the numbers in column E, but only those where column A holds a date.
Then i want to return that number to a cell, say C20. I think I've managed to tell the macro which rows i want to return values from, but I can't figure out how to say "add these numbers together and put the total in C20."
I'll check this frequently if clarification is needed.

I have a database of customers that are all sorted by a customer number.
I have a form that has a number of fields that display customer info. When I use a blank of this form and put the customer number in it's correct field, all the other info fields do a vlookup on the customer number in the database file and return the info, such as phone numbers, name, address, etc.
Here's my question;
How can I check for a blank (using ISBLANK, I assume) to check to see if the customer number exists in our database and, if it's NOT blank, operate on it with the following example which is used to return their insurance expiration date.
=IF((VLOOKUP(B9,'[carrier list.xls]Sheet1'!$A$2:$P$1276,3,FALSE))<TODAY(),"EXPIRED",VLOOKUP(B9,'[carrier list.xls]Sheet1'!$A$2:$P$1276,3,FALSE))
I realize that this may be a sledgehammer approach and that Access is probably a better tool, but my company has not shelled out the $$ for Access...yet.

I have a list of values in column A (part numbers)
In columns B to E I have lists of similar values (part numbers, with row 1 representing their location e.g warehouse, office, etc).
In column F2 I would like to search for the value in A2 in the range B2:E100 and return the value in B1:E1 if the value appears... if it doesnt appear in any of the columns I would like 'not located' to appear in F2.
I've been trying to do this for a while but am making no progress at all.

I am looking for a formula, to change from this
IF Formula located in Cell F15
=IF(E15=A15,B24,"")
to give the If a Range.
I thought it would simply be:
=IF(E15=A15:A39,B15:B39,"")
But all I get is Blank Cell.
B24 has a Value but it does not appear in F15,F16 and F17 respectively.

4 5 6
7 8 9
The actual list is a lot longer and numbers are not in order.

I have used the below formula which works in a standard cell, however I would like to have this is a VBA code using the Target.Offset option, however I can not get this to work. There may also be a better way of doing this.
The code is looking to see if the 1st cell (A118) is empty or not, if it is empty do nothing otherwise it then looks up the value in the 2nd cell (B118) and assigs the appropriate name from the range values.
VB:
=If(A118="","",LOOKUP(B118,{0,0;0,"";1,"Main Bank";71,"PFS";80,"Main Bank";106,"Dry Clean / Photo";112,"SCO";141,"Cafe";168,""}))

I have an array in excel, 4 columns: Month, Day, Stock, Price. I dont know the most efficient way to handle arrays. I know i can loop through an entire array to find a specific value, but if i have a large array, this doesnt seem efficient.
For example, I would like to find the price in an Array (or Range), when i know the value of two columns. If this were in a database, I would write sql like this: " select Price from TABLE where month = 1 and Day = 3". The result would be 40.21. How can i do this with an array? I have a book with multiple tabs in it. The first is a master customer file, including customer numbers. The next two tabs include multiple references to the same customers because they list multiple shipping addresses and contacts for each customer on a separate line. I want to be able to have the additional tabs refer to the master list and find the customer name, then return the corresponding customer # in the previous column for that customer. This is what I came up with: =IF(B:B=Sheet2!B:B,Sheet1!A:A,0). But the results simply returns numbers that increase by 1. It should repeat the same customer # for the number of times that customer name is listed based on how many addresses or contacts there are. What am I not doing right?
