SUMIF - Text Strings With Numbers / Exact Matches / Asterisks
Jun 19, 2013
Doing some job costing on our lowes invoice and am using SUMIF and asterisks to account for all the different names that get used for properties by the cashiers. An example of that range column is:
67TH AVE
19112 PONCA
51ST
STERLING
9420 67 ST
1503 SW 13TH
51ST
10818
19112 PONCA
19112 PONKA
I have formatted this whole column as text and get strange results from sumif when there are exact matches. For example the "10818" string is uniform through the spreadsheet and returns a result of 0.00 if entered as "*10818*" for criteria but returns the correct amount if I use "10818" or 10818 with no quotes.
It seems to be related to the text strings that contain just "numbers" as I'm having no trouble picking up exact matches when there are alpha characters.

Is it possible to use HLOOKUP without exact matches. e.g. < =HLOOKUP(E1,Actuals,2) > where E1 is "2009 October" and the lookup value in named range "Actuals" would be simply "Oct".

I have several cells in a column that look something like this:
Cell A1: abc 1234 def ghi
Cell A2: xxxx aa b 245 qqqqq
Cell A3: abcdefg hij kl mnopqr s
Is there an excel formula or combination of formulas I can use to identify:
(1) whether any given text string (such as those above) include numbers, and
(2) what the first number (which could contain 1-4 digits) contained in the text string is?

I am getting #N/A errors even when I have an apparently exact match in my
table array to the lookup value. I know that excel requires the formats to
be exactly the same and I can force the match if I copy the lookup value from
my table array and paste it into the worksheet. Is there an easy way to
"fix" my table array. The table array is a reference worksheet I have
created which has worked in the past.

I have the following formula which, if text is in A1, will lookup from a list of worker's comp codes to locate the code in A2 and return the wording for that
=IF(ISTEXT(A$1),VLOOKUP(A$2,Codes!$B$3:$C$720,2),"")
However, if there is not an exact match to the code in A2, it returns the wording for the next closest code.
Is there a way to make it so that it will only return the wording for the exact match and return "invalid code" if the number in A2 is not found on the list on the "Codes" sheet?

I'm trying to sum up the total of a list excluding a list like this:
Column B
012*
019*
1758*
70228
70229
70230
70241
In my worksheet 1, it contains e.g.
Column AC
012-something
012-text
019-jumbo
016-things
70228
70221
Column W contains the numbers I want to add up:
$15
$12
$10
$19
$15
$11
My current formula is:
=SUMPRODUCT(--ISNA(MATCH(Sheet1!AC$4:$AC$157,B2:B7,0)),Sheet1!W4:W157)
It has managed to exclude the numbers (e.g. 70228, 70229, etc) but not the text strings (e.g. 012*) when summing it up

I need to remove multiple instances of pages numbers from a 2000 character text string I have dumped into a cell. The spacing is not equal between the page numbers but they always take the form |#####-##| i.e. bar delimited 5 digit-2 digit. I tried SUBSTITUTE but it will not accept wildcards. I was thinking of looping through a SEARCH. The numbers are ordered ie |00001-01| to |00001-25| then |00002-01| etc, stopping at 25. This might lend to looping but I couldn't wrap my head around the VBA to accomplish that. A sample of the text
"|00006-01| (Defendants' Exhibit Nos. 1,2 marked for |00006-02| Identification.) |00006-03| BY MR. JOHNSON: |00006-04| Q. Doctor, I am handing you Exhibits 1 and 2. |00006-05| Exhibit 2, is that the one that you brought with you, |00006-06| the deposition notice of today? |00006-07| A. I believe so, yes." Most likely another very basic on...
2 worksheets.
Worksheet 1, holding all data in column C.
Worksheet 2, the value in column B.
In need for a function that list all exact matches of the values in worksheet 2 column B that are found in Column C of worksheet 1.
I got this VBA code that checks for the string in worksheet 2, column B, but it is a Instr, and I need a exact match and only the exact match. Is this difficult to modify and how?
Or would this be a regular array function?
(I would not need a macro, since the data change constantly and I prefer function as they update easily)
Function matchArray(ByVal testString As String, ByVal dataRange As Range, Optional IndexNum As Long) As Variant
Dim outRRay() As String
Dim rangeArray As Variant
Dim xColl As New Collection
Dim xVal As Variant
Dim rIndex As Long

I have a field that contains rows of data, each made up of a Number followed by Text. The length of the numbers differ - sometimes 4 digits, sometimes 5 or 6. Similarly, the text differs by word-count. An example is
2546 Nags Head
75698 Dog & Duck
634 Crown
I want a way of dividing the numbers from the text (numbers in one column and text in another).
Standard 'Text to Columns' won't work: I can't use 'Fixed Width' due to the number-length varying, and I can't use 'Delimited' and [space] as it will then split all the text up word-for-word (concatenating them back will take ages as my list is 480 rows long).

I have a large worksheet in drive C: called 'hits.csv' that has manufacturer part numbers in column G and column L.
I need macro code to find all rows in the worksheet where the part number in each cell in column G is exactly the same as the part number on the same row in the corresponding cell in column L. The macro should then delete/remove all rows where there is no exact match.
Note: The part number in every cell in column G is the only thing that is in each cell in that column. However just to warn you that the part number in every cell in column L is at the beginning of each cell, followed by a space and then a description of the part.
Once it has done the above, I would also like this macro code to open a worksheet called 'partnumbers.csv' in drive C:. It should then compare the part numbers in column A of this file with the part numbers in the above worksheet ('hits.csv'). The cells in Column D of the file 'partnumbers.csv' all contains a price. Where the macro finds an exact match on the part numbers in these 2 files, it should copy the price from the cell in column D in the file 'partnumbers.csv', into Column K of the other file, 'hits.csv' where the match exists.

I have a list of Items and the quantities of those items on one sheet. Each item has a section location number as well. (three Columns, Item, Quantity, and Section Location). the list can repeat the same item multiple times.
This is why I then have a summary sheet to uses a SUMIF formula to sum the quantities of a given item that are in a givin section. which my SUMIF Formula works great for. But my problem is some items have the word "LUMP" as its quantity and not a number. I want to add to my array formula so if the item does have a LUMP quantity and the lump quantity is in the section location to put LUMP on the summary sheet. here is my formula
=SUM(IF((ProjectInfo!$AE$2:$AE$307 =$B59)*(ProjectInfo!$AD$2:$AD$307= AA$10),ProjectInfo!$AF$2:$AF$307,""))
projectInfo is the sheet where the list is. Column AE is the Item column on the projectinfo sheet column B on the summary sheet would be the item that i want to sum the quantities for Column AD is the section location column on the projectinfo sheet the AA$10 is the row and column of the section location i want to limit the sum of the quantities to the formula is in cell AA59 So it will sum all the quantities in the list on the projectinfo sheet if the item and section location match whats specified on the summary sheet.
getting LUMP to display if its a lump quantity. The Lump can only show up if the item on the projectinfo sheet has LUMP for that Item AND in that section location.
EDIT: Column AF on the ProjectInfo Sheet is the quantity column

I have a 100 element header row. Each cell represents an account. I want to sum the amounts of each subsequent row if the word "saving" shows up in the header. For instance, there may be "saving 1" "Savings for Xmas" "Savings 2" in the header row, and I want those to trigger the sumif function.
Basically I want something like sumif(B2:B101,exact(left(B2:B101,6),"saving"),A2:A101)

Is there a way either by VBA or manually (preferably both, if possible) to actually unite the X amount of numbers that are in a cell given the contents is alphanumeric? I'll give you the following examples to see if you can understand what I' referring to?

asd67,h876 --------> 67876
2,3,ujdj5&34 -------> 23534

I import data from another program in order to evaluate it. Unfortunately, one of the fields I need contains copyright data, however, it has been very inconsistently entered into the database. For example, sometimes the data appears "c1999." or "-1999" or "" or "[1999]" or even "19?" and also sometimes "1999, 1990" and many other variations on that. I discovered the link in the excel help file about extracting numbers from alphanumeric strings, but my situation is still too variable for it to apply; that file didn't take into account that alphanumeric strings don't always lump numbers and letters together. I was able to correct a few things, but my command of excel isn't knowledgeable enough to really come up with something effective.
Some ideas I had that I don't know how to implement: is there a way to strip non-numerical characters from an alphanumeric string? (I've been doing some find/replaces to get rid of some of it, but that is obviously not very efficient when I have to repeat this process daily.) Perhaps then I could just detect the first 4 numbers of the string somehow. However, that doesn't solve the problem of when a wild card is used as in "199?" or "20?" etc.
Bottom line, I just need to grab the first four numbers that appear in the string (but NOT additional numbers that occur after a wild card or a space if the year was not completed in 4 numbers; in that case I'd just be happy with a null value).
I've been doing this with a formula so far. My only experience with macros has been in simply recording them, not actually writing them, but I'll give anything a try.

I'm looking for help in tweaking existing code contributed by acw on ozgrid. The code he supplied compares 2 worksheets, it goes through the first sheet than highlights cells as it finds matches on sheet 2. However I also need it to find exact matches. For example if the numer it is searching for is 15 it must only find 15 not 01500, 015, 150 etc. Here is the post which contains the code and a sample workbook

I am trying to come up with a formula which would combine two groups of numbers, put them in numberial order and remove duplicate numbers:
3 6 10 22
1 3 5 9 10 13 19
The above two groups of numbers are in separate cells in two different rows.
the result would also be in a different row: 1 3 5 6 9 10 13 19 22

I have a .csv file that contains numerical data in the form of strings, much of which starts with leading zeros (i.e. "012345"). I double checked to make sure the .csv file has the leading zeros and that they are wrapped in quotation marks in notepad, and it does. However, when Excel opens the file, it must read those strings as numbers, becuase it chops off the zeros. Does anyone know of way to fix this? Can Excel read numbers as strings straight from a .csv file?

I have this formula that extracts numbers from alphanumeric strings.
{=1*MID(A1,MATCH(TRUE,ISNUMBER(1*MID(A1,ROW($1:$100),1)),0),COUNT(1*MID(A1,ROW($1:$100),1)))}
However this extracts only the 1st instance of the numbers
In a string like 123avfbsdf4556.. it'll extract only 123.
My questions are the following:
1. Is there a way that i could get the result as 1234556
2. A way which refers to a cell where I put in a number and it'll extract those many number instances. In the above example, if I put the number as 1, it'll extract 123. If I put the number as 2, it'll extract 4556 and so on.
I guess this would require some modifications to the Match function so that it does not look at only the 1st instance.
