Command Button To Randomly Pick From List Of Names
Aug 17, 2014
I am trying to create a quiz for myself for studying a foreign language. and I am trying to create a command button, so that when clicked, it will randomly pick from a list of names (located in another sheet) and place the name in a desired cell.
I need to create a function that selects 4 names randomly from a list of 15 names and displays the 4 randomly selected names in the one cell. Also, you cannot repeat the same name in that cell, (i.e. bob cannot be selected twice in his group of four)
I have made a list box and can see the data in it and make multiple choices. What I need to know how to do is put a small button and make the list box appear and make the selected choices, then hide the list box but the button visiable. I would to have check boxes and a scroll bar in the list box by the names but i am stumped. If you could show the code that will make this work that will be great!!! lets say cell B3 to B6 shows cat, dog, mouse, bird. I would check the box and choose cat and bird and have only these 2 show up in the cell B2 separated by a comma. So each line for about 100 lines down will need to have the same choices made but with equipment names, people ect. or is there something better that will work. I run Excel 2003 and windows xp.
I got a problem though with specificying a 2d array. I basically want to click the "command button" and display one collum with names and the one next to it with results. The only problem is trying to get vba to display this on the work sheet.
I'm trying to Filter a list by the criteria selected in a listbox, and activated by a command button. My problem is the sort criteria. I have 11 regions, numbered 01EPS through 11EPS. Sorting by any of these criteria works just fine.
The problem is that I also want to be able to sort by ALL of the regions at once. I can do this by using a custom filter. I recorded a macro to see what the difference was, and it simply a matter of changing 01EPS to "=*EPS". However, adding that to my case list results in an error message of "Compile Error: Syntax Error".
I'm trying to pull 20 random names from a list of them every time I open the spreadsheet, and have them copied onto the clipboard to be pasted wherever. I have some code I found to accomplish this, but I'm not exactly what you would call VBA savvy. Could anyone look at this and see what I'm doing wrong? Or if it is right what I'm doing wrong to get it to work?
Sub GetRandom() Dim iRows As Integer Dim iCols As Integer Dim iBegRow As Integer Dim iBegCol As Integer Dim J As Integer Dim sCells As String
This request is for Excel 2003 rather than 2007 (company does not have Vista or 2007 as I do personally). When two columns are used for an employee's 1st Name and 2nd Name, what is the random formula for combining BOTH columns in a random name pull? Since two people may have the same LAST name, only by accessing both column one (typically LAST name) and column 2 (first name) can they be identified if both last names appear in a random pull. I have used the random generator available from Excel Help online but do not know how to modify the parameters to accomplish keeping the first and second names from Column A and Column B together in the pull.
Explaining this will be widely useful for any company (such as trucking) using Excel for employee first and second names in two columns (assume A1 header 'Last Name', A2 header 'First Name'). Such companies need to be able to do a random pull to comply with DOT (Dept of Transportation) CDL re-certification, substance abuse screens, etc. I am just above a NOVICE user (I have a dozen books I try to learn from before asking).
How can I return name of a command button on click? I want to create some sort buttons on a sheet I will use regularly to speed things up. I thought if I could call each sort button by the column letter the button sits in I can use this in a single sub for all buttons
e.g the button sitting in column A is called "A". when i click the button, it returns it's name to a variable which I can then use to sort column A. I know I could create a seperate routine for each button but I was just trying to think of something neater.
I have created 500+ defined names that refer to worksheets that do not exist (yet). When I add the previously nonexistent worksheets, the defined names that refer to them are not "live" and do not work in functions where that name is used. If you go into the defined names and click on the ones that refer to the now existent worksheet, they start to work, but I was hoping there was a way around this step (e.g. a simple macro that says "update all defined names").
I created all the names so that the person who will eventually be using this will only have to add an appropriately named worksheet and put the data in...then everything will automatically work. I do not think adding names is difficult, but the person who will be using this does, so I want to avoid that person mucking around in my names.
This is probably really straight forward but cant see why it happens, the following macro works fine when called by a button created by the form toolbar but doesnt when called by a command button, get the runtime error 1004, "select method of range class failed"
I have read several articles saying using a command button as a toggle button can't be done but some articles have said it is possible using the state properties.
.State = msobuttondown .State = msobuttonup
Is there any way to combine this with the onaction property so that when you press the button, it stays down and activates a macro then when you press it again it pops back up and activates another macro.
I want to be able to input wrestlers names and pair them up for 2 matches randomly. Is there any way to do this? I am not advanced in excel, but not a novice either. I need to make sure they don't wrestle the same people in each round. Also there will be wrestlers from the same team, so is there any way to try and not pair them together unless it is necessary?
I have a list of potential competitors in an event, and am using both RAND and ROUND to sort them into a list of 1's and zeros. My formula is as follows: =ROUND(RAND()*1,0). My problem is that I get an uneven distribution of players, out of a list of forty, I may have 38 people that are 1's and 2 people that are 2's. I'd really like the list to be randomized, but evenly to allow for fair competition.
with this problem (which I've been trying for weeks to solve).
I have a column ("C") of 640 numbers, which I need to randomly sort and place into the adjoining (ten thousand) columns. I then need to correlate each of these 10k columns with column "B".
The problem I have with the attached (which works for small numbers), is that when I increase the table size to 640 rows and anything more than a dozen or so columns, it takes forever to calculate and Excel often crashes.
I am trying to create a schedule that will randomly populate with names from a list. I have learned how to do this with numbers. How can I do this with a list of names? How can I make sure that no names repeat?
In one column, I used =RAND()
In the cells where my numbers display, I used =INDEX(ROW($A$1:$A$24),RANK(Z17,$Z$1:$Z$24))
My wife is a teacher and she has asked me if there was a way of randomly selecting a child's name from a pre-defind list and for that child not to be selected again during that session.
Up to 35 children in the class (selected from a pre-defind list)A child can only by picked on once during the lessonA method needs to be in place for seelcting the child's name (either a button that can be pressed, or another option).
I have a database output file where one of the columns contains managers names, often more than once. I want to apply an autofilter on manager name and then copy the result to another sheet or sheets. My criteria for the autofilter is a variable pointing to a list of names that at present I maintain by hand; a for-each-next loop then cycles through the names.
What I would like to do, before running the autofilter code, is to create the list of names via code. This would then automatically pickup names that are missing.
The code I have so far is below:
Public Sub find_managers() Dim managers1 As Range Dim names1 As Range Dim n1 As Variant Dim n2 As Variant
In my mind it should check the names in the unique list against the imported list and add any missing names.
I have a list of people in column A and a list of Cities that they have visited in column B.
I need to check some of the cities they have visited monthly but don't want to check them all.
I have attached a sheet as an example (this has been scaled down).
The number of cities i want to check for each person varies each month depending on how many cities they have visited.
For example, John has visited 16 cities and i want to check 5 of them. I therefore want 5 random cities that he has visited to appear next to his name at the top. The real list of data is massive so this would be really useful if it is possible.
I have looked at rand but i can't get it to randomly give me more than one city, and i don't understand how to get it to give me say 5 cities one month and say 8 cities the next month purely based on a formula from another cell.
I am managing a group of sales reps and when they sell a product they receive commissions I am trying to develop something in excel that in cell B5 there will be a drop down that they can choose one of three products (call them A,B,C) then in C5 another drop down will be there w/ two options (new, refurb), then the result will be in D5 depending on the selections. The parameters would be:
Product A new = $10 B new = $20 C new = $30 A refurb = $5 b refurb = $15 C refurb = $25
So if the rep dropped down in cell B5 Product B then dropped down in cell C5 Refurb, the result would appear in D5 and would equal $15.
My organization whats to provide other a excell spreadsheet ( see sample attached) with pick list for certain cells. We have successfull completed adding the pick list. HOWEVER, at times we would like the end user to be able to pick multiple choices form the the pick list
In the example - in column c the user can pick from the drop down list A B V or W
However we want the end user to be able to select any combination, single choice, multiple choice ect
In this example with the above pick list created
How can the end use pick A and W or A, V and W etc
Have column A which is list of names and column E which shows how much each name owes. I want to compile a list of names and amounts owed for the 15 biggest debts (ie. 15 lowest numbers as they are negative values).
I need to compare two lists of client names. One list has 59k names to be compared to second list of 1000 names. The list of 59k are listed in column D and the other list is in Column E. I tried conditional formatting but unfortunately some of the names are slightly different I.e. fair point communications vs fair point communications inc. I was trying to put in v lookup with a trim function but it didn't seem to be working.
