Link To Address Of Data In Other Workbook Inside A Formula

Nov 9, 2009

I'm trying to use some data from other workbooks in a formula. However, the path to the other workbooks we are using will often change.

I think that the user can enter the path to the other workbook in a cell in this workbook. However, I'm getting errors in my formula and am not sure how to make the formula use the cell to reference the location of the workbook that has the data that we want.

This is what I have, but it's giving me an error.

=Countif(' & 'Instructions'!B9 & Planning'!$I$3:$I$100, "C")

'Instructions'!B9 contains the location of the other workbook in the format \path[filename] Planning'!$I$3:$I$100 is the location of the range in the other workbook.

Link Formula: Use Cell Data As Workbook Name

Oct 24, 2006

If I have a two files called test1.xls and test2.xls for example. Is it possible to link test1.xls to test2.xls by putting the filename in a cell?

i.e. In test2 put the filename in say A1 and in the link put the path and instead of naming the file you want to link to put in A1 instead.

I know it doesn't work if you do it that way I was just wondering if there was a way to do it.

Extract Hyperlink Formula Link Address

Nov 17, 2006

Not sure if anybody has been succesful or not in the following but I am writing a macro to check that each hyperlink in my report is operational. My situation is as follows:

Cell A1 has the following hyperlink formula: =hyperlink(Worksheet1!B1,Worksheet1!B2)

I am attempting a workaround to capture the cell reference (B1) where the path and filename is stored and directing the macro to open the link. But when I try to send the hyperlink formula (Cell A1) to a string variable in vba, the result is the contents of Worksheet1!B2 instead of the entire formula.

ADDRESS Use Inside A Function..

Since ADDRESS returns a text string, HOW DO I incorporate it's results into the following array function (which ignors blanks and 0 cells): {=AVERAGE(IF($L$10:$V$10>0,$L$10:$V$10,FALSE))}?

Cell References Inside A LINK

is it possible inside this link to put a variable reference? for example to have a cell in my excel which in this case would be Report FY09 and if i change it to Repot FY08 the link would be c:Report FY08[PPV REVENUES FY 09 - Actual.xls]PPV Actual'!$C$4:$BB$4 or in another case if i have the name of the sheet like

='Report FY09'!D4
to do it
='Report FY08'!D4

or even the excel file
c:Report FY08[PPV REVENUES FY 09 - Actual.xls]PPV Actual'!$C$4:$BB$4

Referencing Cell Inside Direct Link?

Feb 8, 2013

I am attempting to setup a spreadsheet that summarizes data from a set of other workbooks. The woorkbooks the data comes from is different for each year. However, I would like to have just one summary that can be changed based on the year entered.

In B1 the user enters the year. Say 2012

In the bulk of the spread sheet below the cells refrence
='C:...["&B1&" Pt. Visit Stats.xlsx]Summary'!$B$6

As I am sure many of you can guess I am getting a #REF! error. I just do not see why it shouldn't work.

I do not want to use the indirect function, because the refering workbooks would need to be open to draw data. I am guessing that I will probably need to research the Harland Grove Pull VBA work or more likely include a copy of Morfunc and then use the indirect function. But, I though I would ask here first just in case I am missing something relatively simple.

Link Formula To Unopened Excel Workbook

Oct 14, 2012

Im looking to insert a formula in vba code that inserts the formula from a closed workbook to the active cell. At the moment i have this as an example of what i need:

VB:
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "='[SRS 5FFBEP.xlsm]7%'!RC"

However the file part in square brackets [SRS 5FFBEP.xlsm] and tab 7% i would like to replace with a link to a cell reference that contains the file path as this needs to change and update so i would end up something like this:

VB:
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=('" & Workbooks(Worksheets("SRS Files").Range("d29")).Worksheets("SRS Import").Range("c10") & "'!RC)

Note that cell Worksheets("SRS Files").Range("d29") contains the full file path (in text format) and Worksheets("SRS Import").Range("c10") is the link to the tab that reads the 7% (in text format).

As it stands the first set of code works fine however i need it to be able to change as previously stated. So what i need is to replace the file name and tab with cell references

How To Link Data From One Sheet To Another In Just One Workbook

Sep 22, 2013

So I have a set of data in my sheet 2 that I want to be connected to sheet 1. The data in sheet 2 looks like this,

NO
Reaction
H
S

1
2Fe2O3 + 3C = 4Fe + 3CO2

105690

120.21

2
Cr2O3 + C = 2Cr + 1/2CO2

218,085

59.24

while in sheet 1,Reaction No

Carbothermic Rxn

H

S

What I want to do is that when I put a reaction no (e.g 1) at the empty cell next to the label Reaction No, the data in sheet2 (i.e. Reaction, H and S) would automatically be reflected in the empty cells next to Carbothermic Rxn, H and S.

Use A Cell Value In A Address Link...

Mar 9, 2009

I have is a summary worksheet with two columns. One column is for Project ID number and the other is an address link to a specific cell in the worksheet corresponding to the Project ID. Perhaps the best way to explain this is by giving an example:

Project ID (Column 1)
00-111

Balance (Column 2)
='C:Financial Sheets[00-111.xlsx]Phase_21'!$H$1

As you can see the spreadsheets are named after the Project ID number. What I would like to do, if possible, is instead of typing in the name of the spreadsheet for each project in column 2 (Balance), I could somehow reference the cell value in column 1 (Project ID). Something like this:

Project ID (Column 1)
00-111

Balance (Column 2)
='C:Financial Sheets["A2".xlsx]Phase_21'!$H$1..........

How do I write it? I could not find how to have a "dynamic choice" in the macro. I.e. not to have the criteria as "1", "trips1" but to choose from the range of inputs that are available.

Link To External Source Workbook For Data Validation Lookup Values Returns Zeros

Mar 25, 2014

Say I have Source Workbook X 1, and Destination Workbooks X 4. The Source workbook contains a number of lookup values. I want the lookup values to be maintained in the single Source workbook, and I want this workbook to remain closed when the end users are using their Destination workbooks. It is critical that certain cells in the Destination workbooks have validated data in order for formulas and summarizations to be correct.

I'm happy if the Destination workbooks contain a lookup worksheet (perhaps hidden). In short, I'd like the contents from the Source workbook, Lookups worksheet, to just be replicated "as is" into the Destination workbooks, Lookups worksheet. I then want to do my data validation from that worksheet, which of course is open (data validation appears to only work with open workbooks).

I've investigated the techniques in this link: [URL]

Questions:

1) Are the techniques in that link about the best approach? i.e. an external link plus array formulas?

2) A blank cell in the source workbook (text column but formatted as General) is resulting in a zero in the external link. How can I make the external link exactly match the text as entered in the source workbook?

Formula That Uses Link In A Cell To Create Offset Link

Jun 28, 2013

I have two worksheets, one with detail monthly information and one with YTD information. So let's say the three numbers I want to capture in the YTD sheet are in columns B, G and I on the monthly sheet. January's data might be in B5, G5 and I5. February's data is in B12, G12 and I12 and so on.

On the YTD sheet in cell C2 I link to Monthly!B5 and in C3 I link to Monthly!B12 so cells C2 to C13 on the YTD sheet show the monthly totals from column B on the detail sheet. On the YTD sheet, cells C20 to C31 show the monthly totals from column G on the monthly sheet, so cells G5, G12, etc. And finally, cells C40 to C51 on the YTD sheet show monthly totals form column I on the monthly sheet.

In the past I've always created all these links manually. After creating the links in C2 to C13 on the YTD sheet, is there a way to use a formula in C21 that uses the link in C2 to create a link for G5?

Formula To Link A Column Of Data Between 2 Worksheets And Duplicate Rows

Jan 27, 2010

I'm in need of a formula, or another automated technique, to link a column of data from one worksheet to another. I have an input worksheet that I copy the raw data into that is formatted as follows:

COLUMN A
Row 1 12001
Row 2 12004
Row 3 12011
Row 4 12020
Row 5 13050
etc...

I need this import sheet to link to an output worksheet that would be updated automatically as new data is entered into the input sheet. However, I need the output sheet to copy the input values a specified # of the times and list them. For example, if the specified # was 3, it would be formatted as follows:

COLUMN A
Row 1 12001
Row 2 12001
Row 3 12001
Row 4 12004
Row 5 12004
Row 6 12004
Row 7 12011
etc...

I need the formula, or method, to be one that I don't have to continually re-enter as the data changes, as I have thousands of records to do this with. I've tried filling down, but autofill doesn't recognize an accurate trend. Is this something that I can accomplish by combining several fomulas, creating macros, or a combination of the both?

How To Reference Worksheets Inside Workbook

Setting up a formula (or tell me where to look) on how to total worksheets inside a workbook?

Example: the workbook contains a total of 12 sheets, representing the 12 months of the year. Add "cell reference" from sheet 1 to sheet 2 to sheet 3 to reach a total, then when sheet 4 is completed it contains the cumulative totals of all 4 sheets, etc., etc. Where I can look at this "year to date total" and compare to last years "year to date total".

Link Address Column To Company Name Column

Jul 4, 2013

How to get Excel to automatically link address to company names?

Background information

I have started making a database in Excel and added company names and adresses in two seperate columns. Later I checked for duplicates by pasting in the company names from a database I have made before. Now, about 50% of the company names remained and so I want to remove the duplicate company names and adresses from the first file without sifting through them manually.

Example

File prior to duplicate check/removal (tab called 'Database' in attached Excel file):

Company name 1 Address 1
Company name 2 Address 2
Company name 3 Address 3
Company name 4 Address 4
Company name 5 Address 5
Company name 6 Address 6

*used another database (without adresses) to check for duplicate company names*

File after duplicate check/removal (tab called 'Database (2) in attached Excel file):

Company name 1 Adress 1
Company name 3 Adress 2
Company name 4 Adress 3Adress 4
Adress 5
Adress 6

The idea is to make Excel automatically fill in the adresses from the companies that remain after the duplicates check from the tab called 'Database' on the tab called 'Database (2).

Remember also that YoY growth can be +100% (or more), 0% and -100%.

Absolute $ Or INDIRCET Not Working Inside Formula

Aug 15, 2014

For some reason Absolute $ or INDIRECT is not working inside my formula when I add a row to my chart. Formula keeps adjusting.

Here is my formula...=IFERROR(LARGE(IF($B$5:$B$50=$K108,$A$5:$A$50),1),"")

$B$5:$B$50 goes to $B$6:$B$51 AND $A$5:$A$50 goes to $A$6:$A$51..... it can't do that, throws my counts out, needs to stay in this range B5:B50 and A5:A50 when I add a row to chart

Also when I use INDIRECT

=IFERROR(INDIRECT(LARGE(IF("B5:B50"=$K108),INDIRECT("A5:A50"),1),""))))

I keep getting a error with =$K108, which is a cell reference in my formula which the formula needs to look at

So what do I do, or what formula do I need to use to stop this from adjusting as I add rows to a chart to stop formula from adjusting?
