Use Cell Address' To Call Up Sheet Name In A Formula
Oct 6, 2009
If I have 12 sheets in a workbook (Jan, Feb,etc..) can I have those names in specific cells (A1,B1,etc..) and call them out in a formula as the cell name as opposed to the actual name?
I have the following code pasted into the worksheet module which used to work fine but no longer does. I didn't touch the code, it just stopped working.
Private Sub WorkSheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range) Select Case Target.Address Case "$A$16" Select Case Target Case "Custom Color 1": Call CustomColorInput1 Case "Custom Color 2": Call CustomColorInput1 Case "Custom Color 3": Call CustomColorInput1 Case "Custom Color 4": Call CustomColorInput1 Case Else: End Select Case "$A$17" Select Case Target Case "Custom Color 1": Call CustomColorInput2 Case "Custom Color 2": Call CustomColorInput2 Case "Custom Color 3": Call CustomColorInput2 Case "Custom Color 4": Call CustomColorInput2 Case Else: End Select Case "$A$18"
CustomColorInput 1-6 are the same except they input data into different cells F16-F21.
When I attach any of the CustomColorInput macros to a button it works fine. When I try to call it from the worksheet module, the data input box pops up but the data doesn't get entered into the cell. When I try to step through the CustomColorInput macros using F8, the input box pops up, I enter data and press ok. Then I continue with F8 and the debugger jumps to a custom function that I entered (below), which is not called for and is in no way related to the code.
Function PullAfterLast(rCell As Range, strLast As String) PullAfterLast = Mid(rCell, InStrRev(rCell, strLast) + 1, 256) End Function
When I close VBA, the data that I typed into the data input box is in the correct cell.
So basically, I'm getting three different responses from the offending code depending on how I call it up. Can anyone tell me what's going on?
More generally, in this and previous occasions, I've had problems with macros that cease to work for no reason that is apparent to me. What are some things that would cause a macro to stop working, without actually changing the code (other than the obvious, like referring to names or worksheets etc. that don't exist anymore)?
I have a work book with 3 sheets. Sheet 1 is the main sheet and sheets 2 and 3 will use (I hope vlookup) to update 3 columns from info in sheet 1. my attempt at a vlookup call in sheet 2 is: =VLOOKUP($b3,[master_AoJ_2.xls]Sheet1!$B$3;$B$65,false)
my understanding is that: - $b3 is the cell in sheet 2 that will be updated as a result of the vlookup call. - [master_AoJ_2.xls]Sheet1!$B$3;$B$65 refers to range $B$3:$B$65 on sheet1 of master_AoJ_2. it does not work... infact I get nothing at all. when I type the call into cell $b3 of sheet2 excel thinks it is stariaght text. this is how I coded the function call =VLOOKUP($b3,[master_AoJ_2.xls]Sheet1!$B$3;$B$65,false)
The master has rows corresponding to numbered files: 4300 | CellValue1 | CellValue2 | etc 4301 | CellValue1 | CellValue2 | etc
In attempting a simple formula (a couple VBA codes I tried did not work and were probably substantially more than I needed anyway), I made the following:
='CMain FolderSub Folder[concatenate(cell w/file number,".xls")]Sheet1'!A1 This is identical to the copy/paste link formula currently in use except that I am trying to have the actual file number/name generated off the master list instead of what is in the file itself.
Purpose: in case I was not clear on this above, I am trying to automatically populate the master worksheet with the data from the workbook. The current procedure is to copy a line of the data from the workbook, then paste as a link in to the master worksheet on the row corresponding to the file number.
If coded correctly, there are various Excel functions & tricks for creating a formula to send someone on a wild goose chase through many worksheets and cells before finding the final cell that contains the final value. I was able to use =Cell("address",...) function to cut through the many paths and retrieve the address of the final cell. Is there a VBA trick for doing this to the active cell? I would like to be able to run a small VBA routine that would trace back the fomula of the active cell and return the final cell's worksheet and cell address.
I have one worksheet in my job named "Tudo" and there I have about 100 rules and the name of employees that need to follow these rules. What I need is the worksheet named "Nomes com Regras" show me in each name which rules is for each person.
What I am trying to do is, check if the value of c2 in update is the different to the value of c2 in original then run a code (for the moment just says msgbox so I know it works).
I am using an event macro to trigger a set of calculations. In the spreadsheet, users have a choice of 3 input cells to work out an answer; these 3 cells work out the same cost from different angles depending on the variables available to the user.
Users only ever need to fill in one of the three cells to work out the answer as the event macro I designed, should (upon input by the user), work out the remaining two input cells using logical arguments.
The macro and calculation work fine, except in the event of users amending a value in an input cell previously updated; in other words, if all 3 cells contain a value and 1 of them is being changed by a user.
The issue: I need the event macro to recognise the location of the last change made by the user in order to determine which 2 of the 3 cells need to recalculate. However, users will invariably press enter or tab etc... upon making changes and this has caused me issues so far.
What I have tried already:
1) running another event macro "on selection change" to record elsewhere in the model all cell selections as and when the user interacts with the model
EFFECT: it made the "on change" event macro very slow and clunky; so I need to avoid 2) declaring a range as set r = activecell.address
EFFECT: this did not work as the active cell's address would in fact be the address on the last cell; e.g. the one selected further to pressing enter (often the one directly below the cell recently changed)
A solution to add to the existing "on change" event macro that identifies the last edited cell
I searched and I keep finding something that's not quite what I'm looking to do so I think I'm missing something really simple.
Let's say that I want each cell in col b to be the sum of 5 plus whatever value is in the cell adjacent to it on the left (col).
I know that you can just write a formula in each cell like...
b1 will be =sum(a1+5) b2 will be =sum(a2+5)
... but is there a shortcut so that you don't have to write out the actual cell address for each one?
Meaning - is there a predefined name or something that represents the cell to the left or right so you can just use that instead, allowing you to just copy paste the same formula all the way down the column? Something like...
b1 will be =sum(left+5) b2 will be =sum(left+5)
... where "left" represents whatever value is in the cell to the left of that particular cell?
Is there a formula in Excel that returns the active cell address (ie dynamically). Excel updates the activecell address in the Name Box dynamically as you make a selection but I cannot find a standard formula to access it. I know I can achieve this with code using the selection-change event but this action then disallows use of the Undo button - which I specifically want to avoid. Perhaps there is an add-in available?
Is there any formula to find text and return its cell address? This is like when we use Ctrl+F function to find a text, and Excel then highlight the cell contains the referred text. At the same time, the name-bar displays the address of the cell. Now, is there any formula that can perform such task like this?
I have 2 sheets. In the first sheet, I have 3 columns. The first column contains transaction codes. The 2nd column contains the destination code (like a mapping cell where the value of the 3rd column would go but in a different sheet/2nd sheet) and the 3rd column contains the values for it. Would it be possible to reference a destination in a cell itself? Or should I just code it individually? I wouldnt want to reference each data one by one because the total would be 480 reference cells. Is there an easier way?
Assume the following list of addresses are all in separate cells of a single column (A1-A4). I just need the formula to extract the street addresses, and then a separate formula to extract the zip codes.
5430-44 PASCHALL AVENUE PHILADELPHIA, PA 19143 OPA/BRT#: 884350845
4010 MARPLE STREET PHILADELPHIA, PA 19136 OPA/BRT#: 651087200
2618 SOUTH HOWARD STREET PHILADELPHIA, PA 19148 OPA/BRT#: 391251216
5737 WOODCREST AVENUE PHILADELPHIA, PA 19131 OPA/BRT#: 522155600
I have a database of pricing codes made up of several sheets. One of the sheets has a table of discounts. Each genre of product is assigned a code that determines the discount. My pricing code sheets include the discount codes. I want to use the discount code in the pricing code tables to call on the discount table and populate a cell in the pricing table with the discount multiplier. So...
In Sheet1, Column A has the discount code for whatever product line is in the row. In Sheet14 are all the discount codes and all their respective discounts. I want to take the code and search for it in Sheet14 and then place it in column F for each row of Sheet1. So the code in A1 is "abc". I want to find the row in Sheet14 column A with code "abc" and take the value in column L of that row (the discount multiplier) and place that value in F1. I would have every row of the pricing code tables doing the same thing.
The discount multipliers change often so I want to be able to just drop a new table into Sheet14 with the updated multipliers and have all my other sheets reflect the change without having to manually enter the new multipliers.
I am trying to turn this call tracking sheet into an electronic one. Is is possible to have check boxes in the empty cells that will allow someone to just click them as they go along and it would create a total at the bottom to avoid countless hours of counting these sheets. Or even turn "Trans CM" into a button that you can click and it would keep track of how many times that specific button was clicked.
I've got a macro working that updates things in different sheets, the sheets have peoples names in (this can't be changed).
When running the macro its fine, but if a new person is added i would need to update the macro for every sheet (the macro can be run from every sheet within the workbook).
I've noticed if you right click the sheet button and go to properties (or something) that it shows (Name) Sheet2 and Name Joe Blogs.
Instead of the macro calling to Name i want it to call to (Name), is this possible?
The code that calls the sheet looks something like this:
Sheets.("Joe Blogs")
Instead of looking for Joe Blogs i want it to look for Sheet2
Call all data in new workbook or in single sheet from different sheets (except 1 or 2 sheet) of workbook. i already use some macro to hide some data from sheets so i want only filtered data.
How to covert a Excel worksheet to HTML format as outlook's stationary and then call out Outlook to send it as a normal HTML mail, not a attachment mail?
I am setting up a spread sheet to calculate call duration it would be a great help if data could be entered using one hand IE use decimal point on the number pad instead of the colon is this possible. I will need to subtact start time from end time to get the duration
Sheet 1 is my main page containing all my data, full of formulas and is protected. Sheet 2 is a simple sorting page with no color and is simply for sorting and printing.
Sheet 2 has IF formulas refrencing rows and cells on Sheet 1.
Example Sheet 1 A2= Bob
Sheet 2 A2="" until I put in this formula:
=IF(Sheet 1!A2="","",Sheet 1!A2)
Now Sheet 2 A2= Bob
Simple...
But when I delete a row in Sheet 1 (using my cool new macro...long story)
I get #REF! in the cells on my sorting sheet, as I should I guess, because there is no more row there to reference. It's annoying, but what do I do to fix it without just unchecking the #REF! in autofilter on Sheet 2.
I just want to eliminate #REF!
Do I need to put something else in the IF formula?
I'm after a formula or some formatting trick to split up the address in the attached sheet. As you can see, the addresses have come through from a database in one cell, instead of a separate cells for the street line and the suburb line, making it difficult to merge for mailing.
eg. the address are coming through to the merge like this;
