generally vlookup function gives a value from the right side cell. is it is possible to display a cell from the left side. in the attached excel file i want the numbers against the cell which contains mom.....

D is the sum of A and B
E is the sum of A,B,and C
As I add in a new column to the right of C (call it C2), I need D (which has shifted over one) to sum A,B, and C.
I also need E (which has also shifted over one) to sum A,B,C, and C2.
Essentially I need a function in a cell that will be able to reference two cells to the left even as more cells are added.
Is there any way to refer to a cell that is directly to the left of the current cell?
I need to create a Comma-Separated Value file with the Excel formula in the CSV file. Because of this, I do not know the current cell location, but want to do something like =(Cell directly to the left of me) + (Cell two cells to the left of me)

trying to return a value left of a column instead of from the right.

I want to lookup a value in column C and return the value from column A
What I need is to find a max value within a range and then tell me what the row value in Column A is. Usually use VLOOKUP for this but this doesn't like minus numbers.
I think it has something to do with Match and Offset but can't get it to work properly.
I have attached an example, where the max of the total is 4,435 and belongs to Steve but how do I get this to do using formulas

Basically, I have numbers that each start with a unique sequence. The first 5 numbers of that sequence represent a certain cell carrier.
What I want to do is have the function look up the first 5 characters of a cell and depending on the 5 characters, I want it to return a certain value.
My idea with the vlookup was to have the lookup value be the first 5 digits and then in my table, it would take only those 5 digits and return a value I have specified in the second column.
LEFT(C4,3)
VLOOKUP(C4,C4:D38,2,FALSE)
VLOOKUP(LEFT(C4,3),C4:E38,2,FALSE)
I combined the first two formulas into one (the third one) but it is not working. I get an N/A result.

And it works great, except that the data returned is off by one row. For example, the correct value for the sample name in B107 is located in G107, but the formula returns the value in cell G106. I've tried changing the TRUE to FALSE and that returns #N/A.
I am trying to obtain price of an item using vlookup() function on the identifier 0003128 (7 digits) stored with custom format 0000000 in one worksheet. However in other worksheet, the identifier is stored as 000312 (6 digits) with text format without the last digit 8. I tried using the left(A,6) function on 0003128 but instead of returning 000312 it returns 3128 and Im unable to use the vlookup() function.

I need to analyse data separately so I'd like to create 2 separate workbooks, once which imports all of the 6 month data (1 row per case) and one for the 12 month data.
I thought that this would be based around a VLOOKUP of the first 1 or 2 characters but I can't work out how to integrate this with an 'IF' and link it to another workbook.
In the attached sheet I am trying to use the formula below but am getting a #NA error. I have narrowed the problem down to the use of the SEARCH and LEFT functions that I am using to determine the lookup value of the VLOOKUP formula.
what I am doing wrong? If I substitute the SEARCH and LEFT function with the number "14" it works just fine. You can find examples of both in cells B29 and C29 on the rename tab.
I have a large table with data to which I want to retrieve a name to the left of a certain cell.

I've put together a small example of what I'm after. In cell F9 is the MAX of cells F2:F7. In cell H3 I then want a formula that will find the MAX of F2:F7 and return the text five rows to the left of that cell. In this example it would be Fred.
The second part of this question is how could I get it to display if more than one person had the same total....

I have a 2010 excel sheet containing 14 columns and 45082 rows in total. I am quite illiterate when it comes to writing macros but I know that what I need can be achieved with a set of codes.
To be more clear, I inserted two tables below. The first one represents the current data structure, and the second one is the way I want my data to look like.

my first is something that i noticed while reading mrexcels book and comparing to what i was told here.
i was refered to use column()+0 instead of what mrexcel says of col(the number)-how many to get the number i want.
now my setup is like this
in a1 i have a sheet named anaheim batting totals in a2-a16 i have week1-week16. now i have my formula that i enter in b2 that uses the reference in a1 to look up in the range in sheet week1( i manually entered the range location.) i then copy paste it down to b17 with the dbl click trick and then manually go into each of those formulas and change week1 to week2 to week 3 etc. i want to be able to reference the A column title(whichever week appears) and the a1 cell in the same vlookup formula. in essence to say lookup a1 in this range ex.a1:l450 in the sheet that is in the corresponding a column,i.e. week1.16 all set the same with the same range. the rest i can figure out, but i would like to have one formula to copy to all cells of my chart.

i am trying to write some code to analyse a weightlifting movement that occurs 3 times. In particular there is a part of the macro where the user will input the start and end time of the movement using input boxes (to only select relevant data).
I want to then use a vlookup function to search for the start and end times in a range (1 column) in the time range and return the cell reference of these so i can select only these values and either create a graph or do more analysis. My code for this particular part so far looks like:

I have a worksheet that uses a lot of vlookups and I have to update the filenames and locations quite often. I would like to update a single cell rather than updating every single formula.
However I am getting the #VALUE error when trying this.
Simplified Example:
I have: =VLOOKUP(A3,[Table.xls]Sheet1!$A$1:$B$4,2,FALSE)
I would like to place [Table.xls]Sheet1!$A$1:$B$4 into a cell (D1) for example.
And have my vlookup function as =VLOOKUP(A3,$D$1,2,FALSE)
This way I only have to update D1 when I want to change the filename instead of a whole lot of functions.
I love using vlookup, but what do I do if the value I'm looking up is listed more than once in my array? The default is that it will use the first value found.
I have a spreadsheet with 1000's of commodities and for each commodity the volume is broken out by month. For example, here's the sheet where I'm pulling the data from:

So my vlookup for the RC020 for the december Actual Quantity will default to the 5867316. For for January (period 2), if I do the vlookup it will still take the 5867316 again since its first in line.
So my question is, how do I alter my formula in January so it will vlookup the 2nd RC020 and give me the "4668300"?
I am currently having real problem using the formula below:
=INDEX(Data!C:C,MATCH(B7,Data!A:A))
What i am trying to do with this formula is return the cell address of an item that is in a different sheet.
The reference the for search is in Cell B7 which is a date, it then looks at a different sheet "Data" for this date which is in Column A. It then returns the Cell Reference of Column C of the same row.
Currently it is just returning the value of column C and not the cell reference.
