VLOOKUP In Reverse :: Retrieve A Name To Left Of Certain Cell

Jan 25, 2008

I have a large table with data to which I want to retrieve a name to the left of a certain cell.
Clear as mud so far!

I've put together a small example of what I'm after. In cell F9 is the MAX of cells F2:F7. In cell H3 I then want a formula that will find the MAX of F2:F7 and return the text five rows to the left of that cell. In this example it would be Fred.

The second part of this question is how could I get it to display if more than one person had the same total....

Reverse Data In A Cell / Reverse Cell Contents

Dec 18, 2009

I am trying to write a formula to reverse data in a cell. Basically I am converting a number to hex then I want to take that hex string and reverse it. So it would be something like this my original number is 400001001 my hex number would be 17D787E9 because I am only allowing it to show 8 characters. I want to reverse the 17D787E9 to read 9E787D71.

My question is: How can I reverse that cell? I have searched google and this forum and can't seem to figure it out. I am sure I could do it in VB but I don't know any VB code.

Reverse VLookup

Jan 7, 2009

I have a column, call it E.

I have table, call it Cities. It has a column of, um, cities, but entered in various ways; and a column of regions:

South Cumberland SW
So. Cumberland SW
So. Cumb. SW
Cumberland SW
Galveston S
Rangeley NE
Galv S

If any one of the entries in Column 1 is contained in column E, I want my formula to return the appropriate region code for each row of E.

Note that E8 may or may not be an exact match for the table entry - it may have additional text before and/or after the match text. It may also not appear in the table at all.

I could contruct a whole sequence of "Find" formulae, but I'm thinking there has to be a better way. Also, if I find I need to add another city permutation, it's way easier - & less error-prone - to just extend the table than to create a whole new "Find" calculation column, and then add that column into the calculation that extracts the region.

VLookup / Finding Reverse Entries In Two Columns?

Dec 23, 2013

I have a dataset that looks like below -

Header1 Header2 Data
100 101 20.50
102 19
103 1003.2
101 100 20.50
200 300
102 100 20
200 104 30

Now, what i need to do is for each of the rows in my dataset, I need to find the reverse entries (consider first row where header 1 is 100 and header2 is 101, I need to search the entire dataset to find if I have some data for header1 is 101 and header2 is 100). In this case, I do have such data where header1 is 101 and header2 is 100.

Header1 Header2 Data Reverse Entry Difference
100 101 20.50 20.50 0
102 19 20 -1
103 1003.2 Not found Not found
101 100 20.50 20.50 0
200 300 30 270
102 100 20 19 1
200 101 30 300 -270

let me know if that's possible through excel formulas?

I need a column D with such data and column E for differences. So that, my final output should look like below -

Vlookup In Reverse To Pull Numbers Off An Array

Using VLOOKUP To Retrieve Data From A 3D Array

Apr 25, 2006

I have created a workbook consisting of several blocks of similar data. To make updating the data easy I have arranged each block on a seperate sheet. IS there any way to retrieve data from this 3D array using LOOKUP functions based on data from drop down lists? I have tried labelling each block of data on it's own sheet and trying to retrieve the label from a list using VLOOKUP but each time the label is retrieved as a text string and gives an error message when used in another VLOOKUP. I.e. =VLOOKUP(A10,(VLOOKUP(A13,'0'!C21:D31,2,FALSE)),3+(IF(B10="No",3,0)))
The interior VLOOKUP is retrieving for example "a" instead of a, when the outer VLOOKUP encounters this it returns an error. Is there any way of fixing this, is it a shortcoming of Excel, is it me or will I ahve to go back to creating one big data array on a single sheet?

Using VLOOKUP To Retrieve Multiple Data For The Lookup Value

Jan 8, 2010

I have to write some VLOOKUP formulas to pull several items from a report, the problem is there could be multiple items for each lookup value as the example below:

Company Data ABC Monday ABC Friday ABC Thursday DEF Friday GHI Monday
I need to reference every piece of data for every company but using the VLOOKUP formula, I am obviously only able to get the first instance of the lookup value (company ABC)

How to I write the formula to lookup the other data? The practical appliation I am using this for has anywhere from 300 to 400 lookup values.

Vlookup Referencing Cell With "left" Function

See the attached example for an illustration of my problem. Essentially, I am trying to reference the first two numbers of an account number when using VLOOKUP. The function then references a table with account classifications based upon the first two numbers of each 10 digit account. This seems so basic, but is driving me up the wall!

VLOOKUP W/ LEFT Function

Dec 7, 2009

Function sequence giving me "N/A": =VLOOKUP(LEFT(C6,5),H:I,2,FALSE)

Basically, I have numbers that each start with a unique sequence. The first 5 numbers of that sequence represent a certain cell carrier.

What I want to do is have the function look up the first 5 characters of a cell and depending on the 5 characters, I want it to return a certain value.

My idea with the vlookup was to have the lookup value be the first 5 digits and then in my table, it would take only those 5 digits and return a value I have specified in the second column.

And it works great, except that the data returned is off by one row. For example, the correct value for the sample name in B107 is located in G107, but the formula returns the value in cell G106. I've tried changing the TRUE to FALSE and that returns #N/A.

Vlookup & Left Functions With Formatting

I am trying to obtain price of an item using vlookup() function on the identifier “0003128” (7 digits) stored with “custom” format “0000000” in one worksheet. However in other worksheet, the identifier is stored as “000312” (6 digits) with “text” format without the last digit ‘8’. I tried using the left(A,6) function on “0003128” but instead of returning “000312” it returns “3128” and I’m unable to use the vlookup() function.

Using VLOOKUP With LEFT To Extract Data To Another Workbook

Aug 20, 2014

I have a workbook which has data from 2 different time points (6 and 12 months) and this is signified by a prefix to an ID number which is a letter (A or B) and a number:

I need to analyse data separately so I'd like to create 2 separate workbooks, once which imports all of the 6 month data (1 row per case) and one for the 12 month data.

I thought that this would be based around a VLOOKUP of the first 1 or 2 characters but I can't work out how to integrate this with an 'IF' and link it to another workbook.

#NA Error In A Vlookup When Using SEARCH And LEFT As The Lookup Value

what I am doing wrong? If I substitute the SEARCH and LEFT function with the number "14" it works just fine. You can find examples of both in cells B29 and C29 on the rename tab.
