Data Validation - Control What User Enters Into Single Cell Based On Others
Nov 29, 2013
I want to control what a user enters into a single cell based on others.E.g.
A B
1 20 500
2 50 500
3 75 500
4 100 300
Column A is a thickness and column b is a width what I want to happen if the user enters a thickness in cell D1 and a width in cell D2 I want an error to pop up if for instance the user enters 100 as a thickness to only allow a maximum of 300 in the width. likewise if the user enters a thickness less than 100 in cell D1 to allow him to enter up to 500.
I am trying to do is to make it so that users can enter data into my form (I have managed to create the form and am working on trying to figure out how to get the info entered into the form to appear in my worksheet) and then the data will cause the information to, basically, compile sentences that I want to appear in one of three cells at the bottom of the worksheet.
Essentially, at this point in time, the end goal is to make 3 cells that contain text. Eventually, this text will be indexed elsewhere, but that is for the next person to deal with. I am creating a prototype that I want to present as a process improvement.
So, when the user selects 3 in cell D7 I want the text "Customer purchased 3 Widgets at $20 each." to print in cell 82B. I also want the user to be able to copy and paste some customer records from another program directly into a cell in the form that will just print (unchanged) into one of these boxes, too.
Lastly, I want the user to be able to select checkboxes that will, when selected, print a comment that will print in two of these boxes. For example, if the user selects yes for cell D26 then I want the text "Customer not eligible for free shipping" to appear in both cells C82 and D82.
I'm trying to figure a to enforce dual data validation on a single cell. That is, I need to restrict the user to entering only a decimal value, only if a particular other cell (say A2) is blank. To put it another way, if A2 is blank, the user can enter a decimal value, but if A2 is not blank, the user cannot enter anything. I can use Data Validation to enforce either the decimal restriction or the ISBLANK, but I'm not sure how to make them work together.
In the spreadsheet shown below I would like the user to select a project via a dropdown list in cell B2 which is from the data set shown in row 7 downwards. Then based on the project they select, they need to be able to see all of the locations associated with that project and choose in B3. Finally they then need to be able to select a team which is associated with the project & location combination chosen in cells B2 and B3.
Is it possible that unless a user enters the value of Z5 into Z6, Excel will not continue, or allow any futher data to be entered, this after a user first selects a institution from a drop down list in H6, which will determine the value of Z5.
I have a file where I need the user to fill in a value in a single cell (A1) in order for the data validation I have set up in column B to work. Can I set up a second data validation in the cells in column B? Or is there a way to enter a data validation in cell B11 that would error the user if A1 is not filled in, and circle the cell (A1) that they need to fill in? B11 currently returns the sum of B3:B10.
I'm trying to create a dynamic array so that when a user enters the first sheet name via an input box, excel will know to select the other sheets with ending (2), (3), (4) etc.
Currently this code works only if there are 4 sheets present (as I set this way), anything lower/higher is out of range.
How do I make it so that it will select sheets if there are less than 4 sheets present?
I tried nesting, but I pretty sure this array needs redimming or something. Is ubound a better option?
I'm using Excel 2010, and I need to restrict the value the user can enter into a cell (E9).
In cell E3 is the screen width (pixels). eg 6024 In cell E5 is the preferred width of a window. eg 450
The user, in cell E9, enters an x coordinate for which they prefer the top left corner of the window whose width is specified in E5.
If the value that the user enters in E9, added to the width entered in E5, exceeds the value of E3, (if E9+E5 > E3) then the value should be disregarded (window will be off right of screen) and the user re-enter.
I'm not familiar with the use of data validation, so I'm uncertain as to how to use it in this circumstance.
Can anyone provide a formula to be used in data validation that will control text length (6 digits) and restrict duplicate entries. The best formula will prevent anything other that 6 digits, but question the user regarding a duplicate entry.
For example: if the user enters 123456 no problem, but if 12345 is entered, Excel validation would not allow. If the user enters 123456 again, Excel's validation window would allow but the window will pop-up and ask to confirm.
I have already set up a data validation, if if you pick a region, you only get that regions items in the next column.
A B C D E
[Code]...
But what I would like to do is in Column E(for this example) have 3 extra lists for Location in each region. So if I pick S in A, then in E I only want the Southern options.
I have checked out this website, but I cant seem to work out how to add the third dependence [URL]....
I am looking for VBAS code to validate a date when a user enters a date. The date format must be in format dd/mm/yyyy for eg 16/05/2014 , 13/06/2014 etc
If date not in this format msgbox to advise user date format invalid
I have a worksheet with 14 columns. Column 12 is either blank or when I finish that project, from a drop down menu I pick Yes. What I am hoping for is that as soon as I hit yes the line will be cut from the first sheet labeled Open and pasted to the next available row on the second sheet labed Closed. On the first sheet that blank row is eliminated so there are no spaces and on sheet two it always looks for the next available row as to not over write any data.
Also, to make sure I am doing this right too, I would right click the tab then click view code, paste it into the window (below the drop down that says (General) click file save workbook then file close and return to excel correct? One last thing, while looking at this page it shows my worksheet I call Open is really sheet 16 and closed is really sheet 17.
I'm trying to have a Data Validation list issue where I want to populate a second list based upon the value of the first list.
In this instance I have a Department in the drop down and Employee Name in the second drop down and I want people to only see Employee names if they're allocated to a particular Department. I've been able to do the list using the INDIRECT function, however that only works when there's only a small sample of both names & depts, however I'm looking at populating this document with around 3000 people and over 250 departments, so I would like to be able to use Column J on the Source Tab to populate the details on the Manager Entry tab.
I have attached a sample spreadsheet if I've not explained very clearly.
I'm working on a few dynamic KPI charts and could use a little help with figuring out data valuation for the End Date value. In the attached workbook I am using data validation to pick a start date from a dynamic list (Dates) in E2:Exxx. Cell B2 has 2/8/2010 picked. I would like to have a drop down in B2 show the listing of all dates in E2:Exxx which occur after 2/8/2010, so the filtered list would be in the range E3:E49.
I am trying to see if it is even possible to have data validation applied to a specified range of cells, but if the value of cell 'B3' is '1' then the data validation will not run on the other cells (H4:G7)
Originally I had a file with multiple tabs to sort data, this was becoming very ineffective so what I have done is modified the original WB posted into the desired new format. The WS PSM-04-03A is a vlookup based report that used to pull data from each tab based upon the WS Name (the code is still their) what I have done is combined the WS and made a column(ColumnD) for what used to be the WS Name. All WS have besides "Home" and "PSM-04-03A" have been combined into 1 WS and the title for the data from the original sheet names was added to columnD of "Recommendations" in the new file. (i.e. I did not add all files just some so you could see what I was getting at).
So using the two WBs as an example the Isomeration Unit/MEK Dewaxing Unit/ROSE Unit tabs have been combined into one tab and a new columnD added to signify what used to be done with the "tab". Now if you look at the validation on WS "PSM-04-03A" on the first WB it utilizes the WS Names to populate a list in cell A4 and cell C4 then populates with all columnA items from that WS. Now that I have combined the data I still need the validations to populate the same. So A4 in the new WB would populate with all non repeats of the unit in ColumnD of the WS "Recommendations" and then cell C4 would populate with the filtered columnA results based upon the columnD choice.

I have attached a sheet that I'm having an issue with. Columns D and E on the Dim Calculator sheet have a data validation formula in the cell. It works in the sense that it pops up if they are outside the parameters that I want them to hit. However, if the user clicks the Cancel button they can just keep going on even though the entry in the cell is aganist the validation.
Example: Columns D and E cannot be larger than Column C. Currently now if Columns D or E are larger than Column C the validation error pops up. But I can just click on cancel and keep going. That is what I want to prevent.
Is there a way to grey out the cancel button?
Should I do something else within the validation itself?
The text box where the end user types in the data - I want to make this have a drop down list like when using data validation but dont have a clue how to.
if it is possible to have data validations on a cell within Excel but allow a user to input a formula? The data validation is a decimal between 0 and 1 and the formula would be a vlookup.
First, I have read through the board, and I was not able to find a solution already posted. I apologize if in fact this is a duplicate.
Second, I am comfortable with dynamic lists, dynamic ranges, chained validation lists, etc: so I am pretty sure my question is not a repeat of the other recent validation list questions.
Therefore:
Is it possible to generate a validation list from a single cell with a comma separated list?
For example, if I have “Fresh, Cool, Hot, Neutral, Smooth” in given cell, can I then have those 5 items appear as separate choices in a validation list?
I have tried every combination I could think of using arrays, named lists, the INDIRECT function, etc. I cannot seem to get it to recognize them as separate items. For the moment, I have created a bad (too long/complex) workaround where formulas are used to pull out each of the 5 strings into individual cells.
I am familiar how to perform the task of bringing in an access table into excel, then using a data validation filter to control the data set in Excel 2003.
I am trying to learn the concepts, then apply them to a set of actual worksheets. I am trying to use named ranges from one worksheet in another worksheet. The named ranges need to expand. Although I can get the add data to a dummy worksheet to work within the same worksheet and I can even get a named range to work in the foreign sheet.
My problem is, when I can end up adding the additional data to the named range, it will only add one name. I have a number of named ranges that are referenced on various worksheets. The idea is, certain named ranges should be able to expand so I donft have to type them all in. (There could be hundreds of manufacturers or models.) I would also like them to be able to sort themselves after additional names are added to the named ranges. I would also like them to auto populate as well. I am using Excel 2003 SP3 (11.8307.8221). I have enclosed the file. Drop down lists (named ranges) are on the worksheet called DROP DOWN LISTS (LOCKED) **ITfS NOT CURRENTLY LOCKED**.
The data validation issues are on the worksheet called Rev7.0 Wood (Basic Sheet.) There are other instances to use these, but I hope to learn to do them myself on the other worksheets. Of particular interest is Column f.................
I have a workbook that has three worksheets. The ASU Database sheet contains part numbers and descriptions including specific details that are selected from pull down data validation lists that are named on the third worksheet. I want to have a front end on the first worksheet that has similar data validation lists for the user to select from to create a search criteria that will create a worksheet with only the rows that meet this criteria. I am not sure what method to use to accomplish this.
I have the following macro in my spreadsheet to extract specific data from closed workbooks in a folder. It works great but what I would like to do is make it so I can just open the spreadsheet and press a button I create that will extract the data from the folder that it lies in.
Currently I have this specific spreadsheet just sitting by itself and I manually work out the address of where my spreadsheets lie and add that address into the code and run the macro. I find it a little cumbersome and me not knowing a hell of a lot in VBA don't know what the command is to make it pull the data from the folder that it resides in. Once I do this then I can create a button and assign the macro to it. Can change the code to be able to extract the data from all of the workbooks in the folder that the macro enabled spreadsheet lies?
I would like to delete a column using data validation list. for example :
i have a data validation INPUT list in cell A1 (Part No., Supplier 1, Supplier 2, Supplier 3) the heading start from B2,C2,D2,E2,F2. If user select Supplier 1 from data validation list in cell A1, the column Supplier 1 [c2] should be deleted.
And/or also if in cell B1 have a data validation INPUT row list (Part no.) & if user select part no., the selected part no. row should be deleted.
